Politically minded hip hop duo Dead Prez present their ode to “Summer Time.” Love the vibe of this Tao Ruspoli directed video.

This song is dope… the video reflects the ambiance too.

WHY ISN’T MORE HIPHOP LIKE THIS?

why is the exception and not the rule when it comes to young black music?

  2. isupportlilmama

This is hot. I’m feeling this. No gimmicks just straight story telling. I like this as much as Will’s summertime song.

@1 I know how you feel. I was looking at some video mixes of old rap hits on You Tube and wondered what happened to rap as a whole even though there are still some good artists out here like Dead Prez. It’s definitely not as creative as it was even 5 years ago, but I have hope a much needed hip hop makeover will happen eventually.

I fukk wit Dead Prez anyways.

Do they have am ablum coming out.

  15. sonofabutch

…the song’s beat samples Teddy Pendergrass’ music…that sweet smooth philly soul produced by Gamble & Huff evokes that feeling even today… so classic and timeless…it shows that if something is used as genuine inspiration what’s old sounds new again…good job…i fux wit’ it…!

  16. brandi

Love the song, love the video!

  17. Brittany

    I love Dead Prez!!!!!!

  18. me

Nice laid back song. Nice video too. The title instantly made me think of Will Smith’s (and DJ Jazzy Jeff??) Summetime – the vid has that feel too. I hope this makes it to the top.

  19. me

Oh I forgot to add that soon we might be seeing a lot of MJ graffiti up on the walls with Malcolm X, Martin Luther King, Bob Marley, Marcus Garvey, etc.

Speaking of those guys – funny how a lot the men who’ve made a HUGE impact in history all share the letter M as the first letter of their first name, or last name in Bob Marley’s case.

  20. SHARDAE

    NICE! That’s all I can say…

  21. cali panamami

    HOW REFRESHING!!!!!!

  22. sup?

Now this is real HIP HOP! Nothing about hoes, bitches, skanks, 24′s, gold chains, grillz, or how fat their pockets are! This truly is refreshing!

  23. ladycole

    liked the vibe.

  24. B-D0T

omg that bald mess was not cute!

  25. B-D0T

Fav group of all time! “police state” is what made we aware and active! I want to mary M-1!

  27. Barbara

Feelin’ the song and the video…refreshing to know that real hip hop is still being made.

  28. sigh

I didn’t like it. :( They weren’t saying anything deep nor profound..the video was just average..*shrugs* don’t see the hype at all

  29. imnotthatstoopid

It was a laidback cut-I liked it. Def somethin’ to chill to.

  30. aspadeaspade

f*&k Dead Prez. Nothing but a group of close-minded, racist, know nothings. So what if they’re black. They preach a message of hate (calling it conscious rap) and are no better than the white supremacist groups that do the same. Call a spade a spade.

  31. Pretty as a...

i loved the video…didn’t need all those bells and whistles (a lot of times used to compensate for a song that sucks anyway), it says to me “this is where i’m from, i haven’t forgotten that” love how the guy was tryna get at the bald girl!!!! lol, not all dudes are into the weaves and wigs.

    @sigh

most songs out don’t say anything profound or deep, unfortunately… i think the video being plain and simple was a statement in itself “we don’t need 3/4 naked chix or a plethora of cars sittin on twenty fos, just a mellow song and ordinary people”

  32. hood_shit

    great vid and song

  33. Naomi

LOVES IT….The video is AWESOME and Dead Prez is REAL HIP HOP….
Black People know we look good in yellow :-)

  34. Mr. Back To The Future (I'm So McFly)

DOPE…THIS IS HIP HOP!!! I HOPE IT GETS RADIO PLAY ……THEY BEEN SLEEPIN’ ON DEAD PREZ 4 A MIN MAN…

  35. theComplex

SO DOPE! And not too heavy for the dunce caps that can’t keep up. So glad you posted this.

  36. astroluvlee

Love that video…so very NY summertime….

  37. Nia

kinda have a love/hate relationship with this song. I lke seeing DP actually smiling, lol, but it’s kinda mainstream friendly

  38. JUDAH

There’s nothing “dope” about this, lol. I think that sometimes people say that songs like this by artists like this are dope, because they think that they’re supposed to say that. The song isn’t lyrical, so what’s dope about it? That they’re walking through the hood in the summer, lol? That there’s a wall with SO-CALLED “black heroes” (pawns) on it? Dead Prez represents the obverse side of the hip hop coin ( both sides being cotrolled by the same entity) which is supposed to represent “consciousness” and “pro-blackness”, yada yada yada…in the vein of Nas, Common, Lupe Fiasco, Mos Def, etc. I remember when these dudes (Dead Prez) first came out, and honestly, they look and sound real watered down and f*ggotized now, compared to their original “image”. H*mosexual mohawks and tight jeans are not “revolutionary”. Nor is teaching children that the “sun is them”, smh. The only reason why these actors have a record contract is because they worship the sun god, Lucifer. That is a prerequisite to getting a record contract. All types of pagan worship encouragement throughout the video, from the Buddha, to the direct and subliminal references to the sun.

  39. JUDAH

    @ASPADEASPADE

If they really hated white people, do you think that they would be signed?

  40. Ami

Yeah there is nothing special about this song. They’re not saying anything that hits or stirs ya any kind of way. The production is mediocre at best. They didn’t pull this off. I wouldn’t care if I never heard it again in life, and, actually I prefer to never hear it again.

  41. AFRONIGHTLIFE.COM

we need more dead prez – where they been?

  42. AGM

DP has fallen off. Need to find another hustle. production and lyrical content hasnt been great since there first album. I know people evolve but there look has drastically change, lead me to believe it wasnt real to begin with. they preach one thing and do another. in there songs they big up the black women but in their real lives they are womanizers. Two thumbs down for DEAD PREZ!

  43. Sallyone

Loved Dead Prez from the getiyup, but they don’t look right, I hope they are not smoking that cheap shit!

  44. iammany

Yet another group that’s supposed to be “down for the people” turned out…..
