NEWS BIT: NIA LONG SPEAKS ON SINGERS TRYING TO BE ACTORS – STAY IN YOUR LANE

In the July ’09 issue of Pride (UK equivalent to Essence), actress Nia Long has lashed out at singers pretending to be actors and speaks on how the craft has suffered due to it. Peep what she said:

Asked what she thought about Beyonce’ performance in Obsessed:
“I didn’t see ‘Obsessed,’ so I can’t comment” she says “but it’s just not about how talented you are anymore. It’s about, ‘How much box-office revenue will this person generate?’ When you see certain people – we won’t name names – they just don’t have the skill, and no one in their team has said, ‘You need acting classes’”

She says there are some exceptions in Hollywood:
“If you take time to develop your craft, God bless you. Jamie Foxx is an example of both [actor and singer].”

On the quality of roles Hollywood offers Black actresses:
“If you were able to take all the Black actresses and the choices we’ve made collectively, it’s a pure reflection of what you see on film. People need to work. But the content? The opportunities for Black actresses are more widespread today, but the quality has suffered,” she offered.

FINALLY SOMEONE SPOKE THE TRUTH ABOUT BEYONCE. I 100% AGREE WITH NIA. I HATE BEYONCE. SHE CANNOT ACT TO SAVE HER LIFE. ALL HER MOVIES SUCK. I HOPE PEOPLE REALIZE THE TRUTH ABOUT THIS NO TALENTED GIRL. SHE CANT ACT NOR CAN SHE SING.

  2. viola1

you know its really amazing to me how ppl live with their heads in the clouds, you are so obsessed with these celebrities that you can’t think straight or give your honest opinon or truth without being call a hater or being bitter or jealous, the truth of the matter is beyonce is not a great actress, shes not even a good actress maybe because shes not an actress and thats not hating cause i am a beyonce fan, buy the albums, go to the concerts the whole 9 but i am an adult, i am not blinded by her and i know whats the truth, i will not say oh beyonce is great at everything cause i am a fan and i don’t want to sound like i am only talking about her (only talking about her cause the question was asked to nia about beyonce) there are a lot of singer/ rappers that pull the “oh i can act bull”, but there are some that are natural actors and have been working on the craft of acting (will, queen, ll and of course mos def and he’s such a natural actor that some ppl don’t even know him from his music but from all the movie roles that he has done) and jamie foxx is not apart of this cause eventhough he is now a musician he started out as a comedian (which is acting on stage)

  3. TeeDot

See, I knew some people were gonna take bits and pieces of what she said and twist her statement into something that she wasen’t trying to say.
Nia is not saying that if you started out doing one thing that you can’t cross over into something else. What she is saying is that if you are going to do that, take the time to get it right. You can’t just wake up one day and say you wanna be in a movie and do so. If that was the case then everybody would have been in at least one film already and there would be no students occupying performance arts schools. Acting is a CRAFT that takes time to develop. Not everybody can do it and it’s not fair for pple like her who took the time to develop the craft to lose out to someone who may be a “hot singer” or “hot rapper” who has ZERO talent. Quality over quantity pple… If there are 5 actors in the world but only 2 of them could act, id pay to see the same two act over and over rather than the other 3 who have no skill. DUH! lol

  4. viola1

nia long is the truth, i love her as an actress and would love to see her in a great movie role again i miss her as an actress, spike lee need to put something together for her, sanaa lathan, regina king, regina hall with angela bassette as the older sister with spike it would be great, i really miss nia, she is one of my favorites (love jones, boiler room, best man, boyz in the hood (go brandy)

  5. Dray

I personal dont think Beyonce can act , but Jamie Fox is off the chain. His talent is outstanding . Thats for Nia she really need to get on the train and think outside the acting box, signers, actors, and models are think beyond their current careers and starting new ventures every day so hop on the train or get left behind…. SORRY KID

  6. Derek Naste

Whateever, Nia Long. I didn’t know that Big Mama and Big Mama 2 constituted so much acting credibility. OH and who can forget he incredibly challenging Are we there yet. I hear Meryl Streep what up for the same part.

    Idiot.

  7. Tamara

She’s right but she’s still hatin’. Point blank. Period.

  8. Puritee

Everyone is getting singers in movies now, but the truth of the matter is …Beyonce is not a great actess at all point blank. I love her, but I have to agree with Nia. No one is hating on Beyonce the truth is the truth whether it hurt or not.

  9. toniibby

Damn, I should have known ya’ll was gonna tear this post up lol
But anyways, my personal opinion is that Nia Long is right, to me yes I do believe Beyonce Knowles is a amazing actress and singer. But I also believe that there are some people who should stick to what that do best, such as Master P. for example, he should really stick to rapping, because him as a actor just ain’t working out.
Another example, Eddie Murray umm yeah his singing was okay in DreamGirls, but I don’t think he should make a career out of that. Now a days everybody’s trying to be some type of triple-threat, I mean if you a singer you don’t need to act just to make more money, just focus on singing and be the best damn singer you can be! If you a actress you don’t need to go into the recording studio and drop a album, use the time that you was going to use in the studio to practice becoming a better actress or actor.

  10. toniibby

oh and i absolutely agree with #243

  11. Realistic

First, giving an opinion about someones acting and then critisizing someone calling them horrible is two different things. the other is hating. Cause when we agree we are haters and and when we dissagree you call us stans. I disagree. As people we have to get off this crabs in a bucket syndrome. Do for yourself. I love Nia, Sanaa, Beyonce, And angela and anyone who is trying to live out their dreams. I don’t think Bey is that bad and she really does mostly musical roled. So how would you feel if someone tells you to limit how sucessful you are. If nia was in bey spot, ya’ll would say she can’t act either.

  12. HYABUSA RIDER

NIA LONG COULD GET THE BUSINESS! SHE LOOKS GREAT TO BE IN HER 40′S!

AND SHE’S RIGHT. BEYONCE CAN’T ACT FOR SH!T! MY GIRL MADE ME GO SEE OBSESSED AND I FELL ASLEEP ON THAT WACK SH!T.

  13. lily990

She is so beautiful. Her blog and photos were found at rich dating site —” !!! .sugarscupid. c o m” —- last week. I am wondering what kind of relationship she is seeking on that site.

  14. This post is an absolute mess!!!

I read some of these comments and i’m ashamed…there are two points I want to add in:

A.) I think Beyonce is a business woman and is just trying to take any opportunity she can while she’s hot, you can blame her for that. However, I am not going to give her more credit then she is due…someone mentioned Beyonce in the same box office draw as people like Will Smith, Denzel, Halle, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, George Clooney, ect..I hate to bust some of her fans bubbles, but Beyonce is not on any of those peoples level in that movie business so please stop right now. What people are failing to comunicate is Beyonce has never played a lead role, and I dont blame her, she is not a lead type actress. Movies like Dreamgirls and Austin Powers would make money without Beyonce in them. The other movies she has been in like Fighting Temtations or Cadallac Records flopped. That movie Obsession had the type of story line that is always popular regardless and even then, the movie was a minor success compared to REAL box-office actors.

I beleive that it is a decent idea to have her in some movies (i.e musicals) and I beleive she does bring her fan base out to some of the movies she is in, but please for the love of god stop acting like that girl is queen of everything because she’s just not. I think she is one of the best performers we have today, and give her kudos for trying but I gave some of her films a try and im over it already. Hell Janet Jacksons movies do better then Beyonces and at least Janet can act and for the most part has always played lead roles.

B.) As far as Nia is concerned. I get her point, but the fact is everyone is trying to get theirs in that business. Had someone like Halle Berry sat around complaining about how hard it was for her to get roles she would never be where she is. I have heard Halle say that it is hard, yet she fights for roles and produces movies to open up different avenues. Halle also doesn’t settle for roles that are just simply written for black women, she goes after all types of roles, sometimes it pays off sometimes it doesn’t, but she takes chances which I beleive is one of the things that seperates her from the rest. Also, someone on here came hella hard at Halle about supposidly being ‘overrated’..Halle is a damn ICON at this point, there isn’t anything anyone can say about the chick at this point because she’s done it all. Plain and simple, some of you can sit around all day and talk about who should be in her place, but the fact is she fought long and hard and has earned her shit, I suggest these other females in that business do the same.

  15. This post is an absolute mess!!!

    ‘BackingBarack” said:

‘halle only got where she is by dating famous men more specifically white men. she is light skinned, which supposedly makes her more appealing to the white audience.
she can act but she is not an amazing actress. taraji surpasses halle. halle berry won that oscar bc she was the only blk actress that would get naked with that old decrepit crack head. speaking of crackheads, she plays a good one. anyone can play a good crack head’.

^Ok, there’s too much ranting going on in your post. First off, what famous men that Halle has ever dated that has elivated her specifically? Westly Snipes? Not really. David Justice? Nope. Eric Benet? He got more famouse off of dating and marring her, matter of fact a majority of the men Halle has dated have benefited more off of her spotlight then her off of theres. The only white man I know about her being with is the one she is with now. Why are so many black people so self hating? What does Halle’s skin color have to do with anything? Halle is not that light skinned for some of you to be going at her the way you do.

And let me take time out to educate you about Monstars Ball. They were originally looking for a no-named actress. Then, Queen Latifa was one of the first considerations for the role, the only reason why she didn’t take the role is because she said at the time they didn’t have the cast fully assembled, she said otherwise she would have been in the movie. So I guess that throws out your theory. Angela Bassett claimed in an interview that she was offered the role and turned it down because she didn’t want to prostitute herself out like that..when the fact of the matter is, the producers and director of the movie came out after that and said that Angela was never offered the role, that ofcourse the script was floating around like all scripts do..but the only people that were offered the role with a name in the business were Queen Latifa and Halle and even then they didn’t want to give Halle a role because they said she was too beautiful for it..so she had to fight hard for that role.

I lost a little respect for Angela Bassett after she pulled that stunt because all she ended up looking like was bitter and I thought she was better then that. That is part of the reason why some black actresses dont make it, because they are too busy hating on each other. Add that to the fact that the very same night Halle won Oscar for that role, Angela Bassett was photograuphed with Oprah crying her eyes out because she was supposidly ‘so happy’ for Halle’s win. Halle called her out in Essence Magazine for that and rightfully so. I love Angela and think that she is the best black actress, but she has her weaknesses as well and was out of line for her comment. As far as Halles sex scene, if you are so mad at her for having one with a white man..then be mad at the BLACK director for directing it. Bet you didnt know that huh? Mad at Halle for doing her job as an actress and imitating a sex scene with a white man when she is half white her self? Child please. As far as Taraji, not even worth the space, you’re reaching with that comment. Everytime I see Taraji I think “Baby Boy”, Jodie my Jodie. Unfortounatly for Taraji, she wont reach Halles status. Nice try though. Bottomline, unlike some of the actresses in that business, Halle has seemingly done nothing but be on her grind and try to help out other black actresses whenever she can. I have heard stories about Halle that she has passed up roles in hopes that other black actresses would come up. Some of you are just flat out disrespectful and you look silly to anyone with commen sense.

  16. JPIC

In a way I agree with her but to be honest I don’t Think Nia did a good job in “Are WE Done Yet” Don’t get me wrong I do think she is a good actress but that one movie she didn’t do to good.

  17. mama..m

Hey nia or whatever they call you, stop hating gal..No matter what you say, mourn and b@%$tch , beyonce is just an odained, favoured child from God..just like king david in the bible..Am telling you certain people are meant to have it all and shes one of the chosen..And guess what?? ther’s more better and nicer things to come..she’s the number one chick in the game..Sorry nia, such is life…hahahahahahhaa

  18. jfortyjforty

ok, so what if some feel that Beyonce can’t act….is that her fault? should she say “you know what, gabrielle, sanaa or nia should take this, i’m not an actress. ummm…hell no, you shouldn’t limit yourself due to others shortcomings. bey deserves it!!

  19. saywhat

Nia Long is a Very good actress, it’s not a debate or a question. I like Beyonce as a singer but I would rather see a good actress in a part than a crappy one. Read the reviews they gave Mrs. Knowles stirring performance. You can be a fan of someone’s but I’m supposed to act like I can’t see the girl can’t act for sh**. Please!!! I love all the Beyonce fans now all of a sudden Nia Long can’t act and is jealous. God, grow up. If Beyonce was a good actress it wouldn’t be a debate.

  20. saywhat

And another thing some of the Bey’s fans are just a little nuts Beyonce is a “ordained favored child from God” WTF. I guess you get put out on the street Mrs. Knowles is gonna invite you to come live in her house? Get a grip

  21. TOTELLDATRUTH

    @CHERYL
yOU SAID beyonce done all that and SHE STILL DID AWFUL IN CADDI RECORDS…POINT BLANKS SHE CANT ACT…U KILLME SAYING STUPID STUFF…U SHOULD READ B4 YOU POST…IF SHE REALLY WENT TO THE HOSPITAL SHE ANIT LEARN SHIT & IF U SAW THE MOIVE SHE WAS THE FUNNIEST CRACK HEAD I EVER SEEN………..AND NIA DIDNT DAY ANYTHING ABOUT BEYONCE YOU PEOPLE CANT READ! i guess u all graduated from the same high school as your GOD BEYONCE

  22. TOTELLDATRUTH

if beyonce is a good actress as Nia AS YOU PEOPLE CLAIM…THEN CIARA IS JUST AS GOOD A SINGER AS BEYONCE

  23. DD

Well put Nia….you’re so right. It’s sad that Women of color that have the skills to really act passed on to very sterotypical performer who Hollywood thinks they can make profit rather than letting at least some one that’s qualified black women who can really act.

If you notice we never had a black women playing a lead role on tv or major movies and/or an action figure. (Halle Berry doesn’t count) . TNT is a great example there really isn’t a black actress on basically most of their new or current shows. They only have black men that are includng never a black women….and I think it’s unfair that protray us in such a stereotypical way.

  24. Ummm...

    Speak that truth sister!!!!!!

  25. Natasha

I 100% agree with Nia Long. Shes not the first who said it, Samuel L. Jackson also said the same thing. A while back he said ,The people who are real actors can’t roles cause all the wanna be actors are getting.Mainly because, they have won grammys, records and are so popular. Why are ya’ll who disagree, mad cause she said that.About 90% or above 90% of people agrees with her. They ask her about Beyonce and she gave an honest opinion. What for those of you who are upsets ? Did you ya’ll expect her to lied and say ”oh Beyonce performance was brilliant and perfect”. Not everyone feels like that,Most people don’t. Nia was not only referring to Beyonce when she responded. Please stop making it seems as if her respond was only towards beyonce. It was towards any singer /musician/reality stars who have no talent, their only motive is to continues to fatten thier pockets.

  26. Rufus

Nia was on point with here comments. They get offered the role but dont put in the time to actually learn the job and so its makes everyone look bad . If you serious about acting then why not take a smaller role or some classes and put in the time to becoming the best actor you can just as you put in the work to become the best singer you could .

  27. candygirl

I dont think she called anyone out particularly….but a hurt dog will holla….she is tellin the truth though….and she told it in a very respectful way. In no way, shape or form was she hating

  28. PYTMissyouMichael

LMAO get ‘em Nia so right and what I have been saying for so long. We know damn well B can’t act and the industry is pimpin’ her out trying save their ish in this recession why those who are masters at their craft are being turned away cuz they may/might not generate enough money a damn shame. Rarely a crossover is good rarely.

  29. PYTMissyouMichael

Ok after reading the comments some of ya’ll especially 1, 6 and 14 ya’ll are missing the point yet again. Please don’t let your obsession for B blind you completely. They aren’t even offering parts to black actress duh and once again they are using us to sell somethan ya’lll need to get with it.

  30. halcyon

“halle only got where she is by dating famous men more specifically white men. she is light skinned, which supposedly makes her more appealing to the white audience.
she can act but she is not an amazing actress. taraji surpasses halle. halle berry won that oscar bc she was the only blk actress that would get naked with that old decrepit crack head. speaking of crackheads, she plays a good one. anyone can play a good crack head.
if you notice any other role halle plays fails? cat woman, xmen series, why do fools fall in love, and i forget the name but some movie where she is supposed to be ghetto and moves in to a rich house.
i mean it is so easy to act ghetto but halle berry could not even be believable.
halle is just a pretty face, she has no dimension and is flat. sorry but that is my opinion. jennifer hudson gives a better more passionate performance than halle.’
    **************************************************

I agree completely about Halle, but IMO Jennifer is also one-dimensional. Does she do any other characters other than “the mad, overweight black woman?” Frankly, I don’t think Jennifer is much different in real life to the characters she plays. She was very fortunate to get a role that she pretty much played herself and won an Oscar. Very lucky.

  31. halcyon

“Your post contradicts itself, im confused at how you claim Halleis one dimensional…yet go on to name the spectrum of different types of films she’s been in. I dare you to name one black actress that has a resume of versitile films such as Halle. You wont find one. So you get a FAIL.”

    *****************************************************************

Halle’s “acting” is one-dimensional. The roles may be different, but she’s pretty much always the same.

  32. TEEDOT

Refer to my first post #243. Some of y’all are real foolish and still not READING. Nia is letting it be known that the value of movies is going down because the pple who receive half the rolls have NO SKILL. Why? Because they have not learned the art of being an actor. To be an actor requires SKILL. Why? Because it is a CRAFT. Just because a singer/rapper/athlete is hot at the moment does not certify them to be in a movie! Lol She is saying if your gonna do it, take the time to develop the craft!!! Beyonce took her time to develop the craft of being a performer. You think if Nia hopped up one day and was like “Lemme make an album” and for some very strange reason she ended up getting attention for it, bey wouldn’t start making up noise cause she know Nia aint no damn singer? LOL yeah my example is boosted to hell but my point is that if your gonna do something, do it right man and stop offending those who actually spent their lives working hard for it and you with zero skill try to take over and call it “quality”

  33. jenieycancellieri

    Wow Nia! Jealous much.
My thing is, if a singer can act…….they can act. Do I think Bey or Mariah can act…..No…..Is their singing the best……Mariah’s: yes………But they have this thing about them.
Now do I think Jamie Foxx can sing……..Yes……..Can he act?………Yes………I just don’t like him. Go figure…..
Other singers that can sing and act: Mario, Jesse McCartney, CB (say what you want), KeKe, Tamarya Gray, Whitney Houston, Jennifer Hudson, Janet Jackson(say what you want)
Never liked Nia……she’s hating b/c the only movies she can get these days are sequels to “Are We There Yet?”………NEXT

  34. What The @##$%@

you know what am not upset about what nia said because well she is right. some singers arent the best actors in the world and it is messing up the art of films because the reason they get roles is that they have a great album and a pretty face. and then when you go to see the movie, in your head you think, now i know someone could’ve played that role better. with that being said some of them are suprising such as jamie foxx but he was already an actor before he began his career as a singer. so all i am saying is that she is right when she says they are killing the craft because why, they are taking money out of the mouths of people who live and breath acting and also they make some movie insufferable.

  35. RIZZA

Beyonce can not act! I love her as a dancer, singer, performer but she is definately NO actress! I agree with Nia 110%. Not hatin it’s da truth

  36. EGO

Bey isn’t the best actress, yea
neither is Nia, so she should just stop criticising others
and not only Bey fans disagree with Nia so some of you really need to shut it
it’s just hypocritical she’s calling out someone else when she’s not any better

uhm, if you’ve ever watched a B interview, you’ll know she speaks well.
since when did Kelly always speak? i saw some of yaw’s comments some minutes ago and most of you were getting mad about how Bey always used to steal the spotlight in DC, even during interviews. now it’s the other way round?
lol, yaw need to make your minds up cuz you contradict yourselves way too much just to tear B down
damn, what does that have to do with this post anyway? Lawd, it just doesnt end

my girl can never get some peace. so much negativity is always around her

  37. who

I agree with Nia a very well spoken woman. Beyonce can’t even drop that country bumbkin accent to do a role. Hands down TEAM NIA.

  38. theComplex

I’d never thought of it this way but her comments hold truth. The numbers that Beyonce pulled in would not have been pulled by better skilled actresses (Nia Long, Sanaa Lathan) who get little light in white pop media.

The only counter-point I might bring up is that unfortunately we are still in a time where ANY black actress/actor that is appreciated/hyped by the media should be thanked and celebrated. Despite the efforts, we are not at a point where we can be SO damn picky. The alternative is for blacks to be in movies that get no hype and no financial backing.

The best thing to do is become a part of the solution.

  39. KEEPING IT REAL

IT DONT MATTER THIS WAS A WASTE OF POST. NIA LONG MA. ITS NOT GOING TO STOP WHAT EVERY YOU SAY ORWHAT YOU DO. THIS IS AMERICA ITS SAD TO SAY. IF YOU FEEL THAT WAY MA DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT WORK HARDER OR FIND SOME OTHER WAY TO MAKE MONEY. I FEEL YOU MA B. HAS BEEN GETTING WAY MORE MOVIE ROLES THAN YOU AND I WOULD BE A LITTLE BITTER TOO IF MY PHONE AIENT RINGING FOR WORK.

  40. Tori

Okay these are the comments I want to address:

    1. Nia needs to stop complaining

For goodness sake, it’s one interview. To my knowledge this is the first time she’s even said something like this. She was asked what she asked and she replied how she replied. Some of you act like she goes around saying this over and over. Stop over exaggerating.

    2. All of us who agree with Nia are just haters

Um, no. All of us who agree with Nia, JUST AGREE with Nia, that’s it. I like Beyonce…..to a certain extent. I do get sick of seeing her all the time when I turn on the tv or get on the internet. But just because I think she needs to take some more time to develop acting skills DOES NOT mean that I’m hatin’ on her.

Beyonce is not my God, k?

I swear some people are just getting too hyped over an interview. Either you agree or you don’t agree. Let’s not start all the name calling and talking about each other and these celebrities like we know them personally.

    Put it this way:
Let’s say you are a part of the police department and you’ve been working your ass off for 10+ to be a detective, and this dude that works at McDonalds comes in and automatically gets that detective position just because of their name. Would you or would you not be pissed off? Maybe not, had they went through at least half of the training that you went through. But did they? No. If you are passionate about your job and someone who’s had no experience or training gets that promotion you’ve been going for all your life, you would feel some kind of negative way about that.

    3. Nia’s jealous because she does not have roles thrown at her like Beyonce does

EXACTLY. Most real black actresses have to WORK to get their roles because they ARE NOT thrown at them, the roles get pitched to singers/rappers first. Hell, movies get written specifically for them first before anyone thinks about the real actors. So no, this isn’t about jealousy. It’s bigger than something petty like that.

But unfortunately, that’s how the media is: petty. Talent doesn’t mean a damn thing anymore. Just the freakin name.

  41. nasty camden nj

Damn, pause, Nia was my girl too. I hate when “actors/ actresses” say things like this its ussually the ones with no work, that are jealous… work hardy!

  42. msblknasty1

    …… leave … jhudson….and jamie …. out they can do both ….
….who got a oscar AND a grammy …. i dont see beys name oh oh lolol..

  43. zspot

I agree 100% with nia if you want to act take acting lessons… you can only go so far on looks

  44. Livelyone

Thank you Nia for speaking on this issue. There have been several movies that I passed on paying to see because I don’t wanna see beyonce perpetrating, knowing their are trained actresses who can do the job sooo much better than her.

She is sad, won’t stay out of the spotlight out all. It is something to be said for folk who don’t take time out to live life privately and away from the camera. Minus her money, I feel sorry for her and her husband.

I am not a fan of her simply because she is inconsiderate and disrespectful.

  45. alwaysalady

Those same people that pretend they are actors are pretending they are songwriters singers and musicians
    PAYOLA NEEDS TO STOP

    malcolm
    Wednesday, July 15, 2009 /
When beyonce sold out concert tours and sold 5 million albums at least half of those ppl are going to see her in a movie and if she took the risk and produce her own movie and her fans support her . why the hate.? black ppl need to approach hollywood as a business if I’m going to produce a movie putting up million of dollars you dam right i’m going to put beyonce in it because she gonna make me money . cant say the same for Nia
    __________________________
Malcolm, there are many positive things I can say about Beyonce. And it is really too bad the interviewer even mentioned her name because Nia’s point has been missed completely by some. Nia is stating something that should be hard to take issue with. “Know your craft, get training if needed. ” When I go to a movie or watch a tv show, I want to be entertained and I really don’t want to be surprised by being subjected to an actor/actress of little to no talent. You can make it about business and about the money. But when making paper becomes the ONLY thing that matters, the quality of the thing you are producing and more importantly the thing I am consuming can suffer.

My take on what Nia said is this: Sing your hearts out singers, do your thing! But when you come on stage or before a camera to act, know how to act! And if you don’t know how to act, get some training. Strive to make your acting performance as great as your singing performance. Hone your skills. And to put in money terms, I want the best that I can get for the $10 movie ticket or my $100 cable bill!

  47. Mz.NewEssence

I completely agree with Ms. Long. Singers like Beyonce need to stick with singing. There were many real actresses out there who would & could have made the role “B” played in obsessed pop off that screen. Beyonce is a terrible actress…not hating….but the truth is the truth.

  48. That Lady from H-Town

whoa whoa whoa!!! BEYONCE IS NOT AN ACTRESS FOLKS…. let’s just start there. Does anyone remember when Samuel L. Jackson went off of “Fiddy” for his “ACTING SKILLS”? This is the same thing. I understand 100% all the BEYONCE STALKERS, but the truth of the matter is ACTING just like SINGING is a talent you either work hard to craft your skill or you half ass it and cross your fingers and pray to GOD that you’ve done a GOOD JOB.

  49. That Lady from H-Town

SORRY HIT THE BUTTON TOO QUICK.. BACK TO WHAT I WAS SAYNG:
BEYONCE IS NOT AN ACTRESS AND FOR ALL HER STALKERS/FANS I NEED FOR ALL OF YOU TO UNDERSTAND THAT. As a performer she works her behind off, now if she could do that with her “ACTING SKILLS” then she could be a Jamie Foxx or Will Smith. Don’t act like Nia is the first actor/actress to comment on these singers turned actors. Samuel L. Jackson went hard @ 50 when he learned he was making a movie. In my book they actually have a right to be upset when these are people who study this are and try and perfect it. Anyone can drop a beat and put something on wax and hope it get enough buzz to be a hit, but acting is either you can do it or you can’t.

I just have to comment on one person’s post BEY’S #1 FAN:
You mentioned names like JAMIE FOXX, WILL SMITH, QUEEN LATIFAH AND JENNIFER HUDSON. Let’s break down the careers of the first 3: Jamie was doing both music and acting Jamies first CD wasn’t UNPREDICTABLE it was INFATUATION..it sold and it also showed how musically gifted he was. Acting is Jamie’s passion you can tell by the vast roles he has succumb to. Yes he got his start on IN LIVING COLOR (sitcom actor), but he perfected it everytime he can improv with the best and that is what Nia is talking about.

NEXT we have WILL SMITH who is yet another talented actor. We all know him as the lead in DJ JAZZY JEFF AND THE FRESH PRINCE, but look what he did he went and did the FRESH PRINCE OF BEL-AIR and took his DJ right along with him. he was a sitcom actor and we all fell in love with him and at one point forgetting that he started in music, because when he went back to rap’n everyone talked about his skills because he didn’t swear in his music, but for those hip hop heads he never really did cuss and sold a s@$% load of records. He was coming back to compete in an industry that forgot about real hip hop and what it was all about, so he tried his hand at directing and continued to perfect his skills and might i say he’s now up there with Denzel and Samuel L. Jackson.

THEN WE HAVE QUEEN LATIFAH: Who blazed the hip hop scene in the late 80′s early 90′s. She put out hit after hit after hit and then came LIVING SINGLE (sitcom yet again) which was my ish. That show was the first SEX IN THE CITY you had 4 black women doin they THANG and bein FABOLOUS. They took us through just about everything possible, but Queen Latifah also had a hand in producing that show. Then her acting debut was SET IT OFF and that movied was bananas, she was criticized for playing the lesbian and her sexuality was questioned, but then after that she was sought after. through all that she was still batteling with the death of her brother. So yes she, jamie and will deserve ALL their praise and props for being one’s to finely craft their skills and be HIGHLY sough after.

Lastly you have JENNIFER HUDSON…she wasn’t looking to be an actress, hell she was on AMERICAN IDOL and simon cowell told her she wasn’t going anywhere. Right after that she was cast in Dream Girls (i believe due to her rendention of AND I’M TELLING YOU) she even got an OSCAR (OVER BEYONCE) WHY YOU ASK, because she acted her ass (oops can i say that?) off. Jennifer OWNED that movie and there’s no denying that. Now her sex in the city role was OK, but after dream Girls she was in demand. Hollywood seen potential in her and wanted more of that.

I’m not knocking Mrs. Knowles-Carter’s hustle but everything she touches DOESN’T turn into GOLD. Her first disaster was CARMEN HIPOPERA..understanding first film but man, then we have Austin Power Gold Member..honestly that movie was blah compared to the first and last one. Anyways she was cast to play the SEXY AGENT all she had to do was stand there and look pretty and say a few lines. Next there’s FIGHTING TEMPTATIONS, I did like this movie even though it was a hot mess altogether, and Beyonce had nothing to do with that. It was cute and I love the song and i feel she did an OK job in this movie. Then we have DreamGirls which she was supposed to be the leading actress BUT J-Hud stepped in and what did i say before OH YEAH…OWNED THAT MOVIE. As a result…OSCAR. Then lastly we have OBSESSED..which at this time I can’t comment because like Nia..I haven’t seen it. I’m not going to speculate just because a few people didn’t like it, i have to go home and see it on ON DEMAND and then i can get back to you.

Other than that it is what it is, There are some SINGERS WHO SHOULDN’T SING & RAPPERS WHO SHOULDN’T RAP. Just like there are some ACTORS/ACTRESSES WHO NEED TO JUST DOWN AND FIND SOMETHING ELSE. But you can’t get mad because someone states an opinion and expresses themself..that’s what the 1ST AMENDMENT IS FOR FOLKS and all those who are coming to BEYONCE’S RESCUE..that’s nice as a fan but unless she’s walking up to your door and handing you a personal check for typing something nice about her on a blog then yes by all means type your heart out. If not… please don’t get so wrapped up in ANY CELEBRITY that your judgement is CLOUDED.

Nia, you are hating girl and that’s hard for me to say about you because I have been a fan of your since Boyz N the Hood but you wrong for that. Beyonce is an exceptionally talented young lady with multiple gifts and interests and who are you to say that she shouldn’t explore them? You didn’t give them to her and guess what you can’t take them away. Instead of wasting time trying to tear her down why don’t you take a few pointers from Bey and go out there and make it happen for yourself as a black actress (produce, direct etc) just as she has as a black entertainer. Use your words and time more constructively next time you do an interview because I can guarantee you that Beyonce has way more fans defending her than you do.

no matter what you say 261 SAY WHAT, or whtaever they call you..i meant what i said will not change a statement..Am proud to be a beyonce fun and will continue to speak or rather say the truth..Beyonce is a lucky and favoured child, that’s just the fact..I feel some jealous in your commments and gal Beyonce is it..Nia i have never liked her and for her to say she will not comment on beyonce’s new movie is just pure JEALOUS..whatever beyonce touches turns from gold to triple platinium..So my dear hung your self..hahahaha beyonce is it..so beat it..

Why must so many equate dissidence with ‘hatin’”? If you disagree, try supporting your claims with a little more intellectual credibility. Then maybe you would be able to substantiate your bitchin’ and moanin’.
There is a difference between “hatin””, as many so mundanely put it, and issuing criticism out of artistic integrity. If for many years one slaves in order to hone the techniques of her craft in order to passed over for a cash cow with shit for skills, of course one would be critical. It’s not envy. It’s disappointed over compromised quality. Moreover, if you read more critically, she acknowledges those who manage to transcend genres. Just those that do it WELL, which excludes the-One-Who-Shall-Go-Unnamed.

THANK YOU NIA! Damn Beyonce, people worship her, as a matter of fact some are obsessed with her and that’s a damn shame! Her voice is ok but acting she is horrible!!!!!!!!

I agree with her 100%,OMG,am surprised no one has addressed this before. Ill be the first to say I LOVE LOVE LOVE Beyonce, she an awesome singers,However,by no means she is a she a great actor, even she has said her acting is not grammy quality However she does the very best she can. Am always thinking a REAL actresses (Especially with the big) could have taken that Roles that were played Mediocar by lovely B. However, dont just blaim the singers, its the people that do the casting and investors as well, that would reither have big publicity than talent or long lasting greatly performed roles/movies.
    Anyways.

As for acting and singing,MOST (not all) singers as Terrible actors, that noting new, however.

LADYSSOLADY= “Award or not, I am not impressed w/Jennifer Hudson’s ‘acting’”.

LADYLADYLADY you must be joking, watch Sex in the City”,”Dream Girl” and “The Secret Life of Bee” in all those movie his girl can act.

Maybe i am a little bias cause Nia Long one of my favorite actress along with Sanaa Lathan..but she is only speaking the truth. I always thought beyonce was a terrible actress but a great singer. And to name another celeb in which the roles are reversed I always thought Jennifer Lopez was a good actress but a horriable singer. Im not saying you cant be multi-talented in hollywood but some people just have it ..and others just dont.

u cant fault Nia 4 being upset.some ppl r born with multiple talents, some just one…if u only have one, STAY IN YOUR LANE.Theres no rule that says if u can sing, then u can act.Nia’s right. If u can sing or rap, do that and simply ADMIRE the actors u love.Dont try 2 become one using ur fame as a spring board! Then add insult to injury by not truly learning the craft and taking baby steps, instead u just jump in like a top billing star! Its like telling all those actors u supposedly admire, that what they do is easy….that u r are as capable as them bc u can sing and if u can do one, then u can do the other…presumptous and insulting!! These singers take on major roles with minimal training, no understanding of the business and no real work under ur belt & expect a seasoned actor 2 be HAPPY 2 babysit their skills in order to get a half way decent performance out of them? All the while PRAYING the artists lousy or mediocre performance doesnt sink the movie’s potential to be great? Its a slap in the face when great actors have 2 work with celebs who need coaching and waste a lot of time that wouldnt otherwise happen if someone more on par with the actor actually got the role.if she’d started out with smaller parts & LEARNED acting, shed be more respected. She can barely speak properly and shes so “country duhhh” in interviews that I wanna shoot myself when she starts speaking!!The studios want 2 make money but if u really want 2 be respected as an actor u turn down roles u KNOW are too big 4 you. u dont get ur team to create projects so u can get a lead role that u’d NEVER get otherwise without ur fame! She should audition like other actors & EARN her way 2 a great leading role. she shouldnt strong arm studios with her fame to give her roles shes CLEARLY not capable of handling. All she does is fill the seats with the same fans who buy her cds and go to her concerts…they are drinking the kool-aid so of course they are going 2 support her! so that being said, yes its an insult when singers try 2 act and studios act like these artisits r some great god..what they are are money-makers and studios like to make money..at the expense of the integrity of the acting and good film making. Sorry, beyonce’s a good music entertainer but she CANT ACT! Beyonce needs to stay in her lane and do her singing as* shaking thing while wearing her signatur band-aid and stilletos…
