I agree with Nia Long because she’s basically saying that there are singer-turned-actors in the film industry who are not talented actors at all, just cash cows. She’s calling out the industry — how money-driven rather than quality-driven it is — as well as singer-turned-actors needing to learn and hone the acting-craft. Nobody is telling Beyonce, or any other singer-turned-actor for that matter, to just sit down. Make your money, I’m not against that! All she’s saying is that they need some acting lessons. Also, guys, she’s speaking in the plural, referring to more than one person in her critique, so stans please don’t burst a blood vessel, she’s not coming specifically at Beyonce’s neck. I could also call out Alicia Keys, though I love her dearly as an artist, she’s kind of dry/one-dimensional as an actress. Like singing, I do believe that some people have the acting-talent and others just don’t, no matter how hard they try. Beyonce clearly has a strong work ethic, I’m sure she’s taken some lessons and we have seen a modicum of growth, but what if it’s just not her thing? It is a possibility.

Another thing —- there is a difference between being a producer and being an executive producer. To my knowledge, Beyonce has been an executive producer on her last two films. Most likely, she was an investor, but not very active in the creative or technical aspects of the filmmaking process like a producer would be. As an investor/actress in the film, she could have a say as to the nature of her role in the film and what not, but generally, the producer is the head-hauncho.

Concerning Nia’s comment on the quality of roles for black actresses, she makes another excellent point that many other black actresses have echoed (e.g. Angela Bassett, Taraji P. Henson, Regina King, Kerry Washington have all said the same thing). As far as Hollywood is concerned, it’s about how much money will so-and-so bring in, how broad of an audience can so-and-so play to, and Hollywood gets wary of casting black actors/actresses in quality roles that do not play to stereotype because Hollywood sees it as a losing venture. Will Smith exemplifies a black actor reaching the level of commerce—where the only color that matters is green. He’s gotten to this point because of his blockbuster status, which brings me to my next point —- audiences/Hollywood need a lot of convincing to accept females as bankable, blockbuster stars. Angelina Jolie has gotten to that point…I can’t think of anyone else. Unless you are proven, undeniably talented and versatile like Meryl Streep, women in general in Hollywood don’t get the best quality roles. Angela Bassett is a great example of black actress who is incredibly talented, but as she’s said in interviews before, she doesn’t get a lot of quality material coming her way, so what I see happening in her career lately is that she’s taking on some roles purely for the money— I mean, she does have 2 kids now. I’m sure other black actresses have been forced to do the same thing—-do a movie for the money.

You must also consider the fact that Nia Long and some other black actresses, particularly Bassett, are not just about accepting any and every role that comes along, money or no money, sometimes you do have to think about your principles. Bassett turned down Monster’s Ball because she didn’t agree with the portrayal of black female sexuality. That was her choice. You can’t expect an actress to accept any and everything given to her, especially if it conflicts with her beliefs/principles.

Lastly, the independent film venue offers more quality films. They are not highly publicized or available in like 3000+ theaters like studio films, but most independent features are well worth seeing. The financial downside for an actor though is that they probably won’t be making that much money —if at all— in an indie. Quality vs. Quantity —the age-old debate.

I love Beyonce, and I agree that she can use some acting classes. I like Nia Long, and I can understand why she’d be offended at someone trying to “act” since that is her passion, but Oh well… There are singers that don’t even deserve to be called a singer *Ciara* and dancers that make dancing look bad. Nia was not just talking about Beyonce…she was talking about the people in the music industry that does not study the craft to become legit actors, but instead will hop their butts up in Hollywoods lane because someone told them they could get a quick check. Truth is, actors get paid more then musicians..well, the bid actors do. And there is a lot of money to be made in hollywood. Nia was simply saying that people need to study the craft before just jumping in because there are far too many up and coming black actors, REAL actors that could/should have those parts.

Beyonce is not going to take away parts from good actors like Angela Bassett, Halle Berry, Tandi Newton, ect..but she will take away roles from up and coming actresses that could be the next “Angela”or “Halle” if they had a chance. We all know Beyonces acting is limited, thats not news. However, I find it funny when som black people complain about Halle getting all the roles, yet you dont want to give others a shot. Truth is Halle Berry has earned her right to choose the roles she wants…she’s earned her right to the phat ass pay check…other women need to get on they grind like she had to. Period. And Halle is also one of the most versitile actresses we have in the business…that explains why she gets the roles she gets. Halle is also probably the only black actress that can change a directors mind…98% of the time, when movies are written, they are written for white women, and it is up to the actor to change their minds…Halle has taken risk and it has paid off for her.

But Nia is telling the truth, there are few singers that have natural cting ability. I think Ludacris has the natural ability, Jennifer Hudson..Alicia Keys is doing it as well. Some have it and some dont. The main reason why some black women dont get as many roles in Hollywood is because some black people are too busy supporting garbage movies like “Obsessed” and not supporting decent movies. Someoneon here said “good roles for black women are hard to come by, when was the last time we seen Halle in a good movie”, well the last movie was “Things we lost in the fire” and to me, that was her best role since “Monstars Ball”, and if some black folks would go out and get more cultured istead of seeing garbage at the movies, they would have known that. Hollywood plays black folks to the fullest, they know that a lot of black people will go see the ghetto movies,s o they cater to it. Thats why Halle is the only A-list black actress. II don’t quite get the tendency not to agree with–not just Nia–but this sentiment. It is so undeniably true. People who cannot act but enjoy success in other fields which overshadows actual capabilities and makes them marketable in all genres serve only to dilute other genres when they’re not genuinely talented. Some aren’t even genuinely interested if you’ve watched even a few films in which rappers and a few pop stars appear — it’s all about the money. The truth is, Beyonce is a HORRIBLE actreess, she’s has the tendency to overact a la Jada Pinkett Smith and Paula Jai Parker BUT she does so starting from a point of 0 believability. Her diction, I suspect, is a good 10% of it. She simply cannot speak clearly. She’d do well to work with a speech pathologist as well as an acting coach. But the bulk of it is that she’s not a natural and in efforts to not only do well but to win acclaim she becomes to most cliched overblown thing to hit American cinema. She should REALLY give it up. That we might be waiting on her to appear as Eartha when the woman was clearly opposed to it and preferred Halle is a bit sick. Sure she said near the end it was okay but that was because it was likely presented to her as “Beyonce and success or Nobody and limbo” lol Again, sick but likely true. of course, I understand arguments like Judah’s about business and the way things work. Someone made a comment about Mos Def not being a good actor. Mos Def is a great actor. As a matter of fact, if you read his bio, you will see that he was an actor long before he became a rapper. I think since the age of 10 or 12 he’s been acting. If you want to see part of his body of quality work. Check out “Something the Lord Made”. It was an excellent HBO movie that won EMMY awards. He was one of the best if not THE BEST in cadillac records and his character portrayal in 16 Blocks was great as well.

Well said Nia - the whole point of what she’s saying is trained black actresses are getting passed over for black singers. You’d never see Britney Spears getting picked over Cate Blanchet or Miley Cyrus getting picked over Scarlett Johansson. When you’re not a natural born actor. Or, if you haven’t studied and practiced the craft of acting. It should be just as tough as going on a tour when you’re trying to perfect your role. Everything she has should be poured into a role and that take time. If Beyonce wants to be taken seriously as an actress at the end of a film shooting day she should feel like she’s been dancing on stage for two or more hours and not “kicking it in the trailer”.

and it is sad because she and others think what’s being out is quality work. Just because movies do OKAY at the box office doesn’t mean that it’s a quality movie. It just means that a name will draw attention. Unfortunately you can’t get you’re money back once it’s been paid at the ticket counter.

It’s good to see some intelligence on this thread brother. I love how these women that name themselves these flattering titles like “Truth”, “The Truth”, “La Verite”, “The One”, etc., don’t know the first thing about how the world that they worship works. The reason why Nia Long can belly-ache in a magazine is because she knows that there are simple black women that will believe her. At the end of the day, the white man only makes room in his pantheon for one black woman at at a time. Right now, it’s Beyonce. These women really seem to think that mainstream entertainment has limitless room and roles for them. The Oscar nominated films are almost always exclusively caucasian. Honestly, alot of it is frustration. It’s easier to blame a Beyonce than to blame the system because Nia Long does not want to be blackballed from the industry. Samuel L. Jackson did the same belly-aching, if I remember correctly, but his situation is different because he is a male and he fills a multitude of slots in the white man’s entertainment system.

Some ppl were born to be actors and actresses and have that raw, natural talent while others were born to sing.
