REMEMBERING MICHAEL JACKSON: CELEBS AT HIS PUBLIC MEMORIAL SERVICE

Tuesday, July 7, 2009

Usher sings a touching rendition of “Gone Too Soon” next to the casket of legendary entertainer Michael Jackson at the public memorial service for the star held at Staples Center on Tuesday, July 7th in Los Angeles, California.

The whole service was a very touching and very well put together. Berry Gordy said it best, “To say he’s the king of pop is an understatement, he was the greatest performer that ever lived!

Other performers and celebrities that attended the public service were: , John Mayer, Queen Latifah, Magic Johnson, Kobe Bryant, Brooke Shields, Al Sharpton, Jennifer Hudson and more. Check out all the photos below.

If you missed the full program, make sure to check out the CBS stream video we posted or CNN & YOUTUBE through out the upcoming hours. I’m pretty sure they will have it available somewhere.

The memorial service was beautiful. I watched it via cnn at work.

Most touching moments was Stevie’s performance, Brooke Shields, them carrying out the casket and when Paris …”I love you”

Everything was heartfelt, the family held it together…

and Michael we love you!!

The service was really good and was a touching send off for Michael Jackson. The people that sang did a very good job and I am proud of little Shaheen from the UK seen as he is so young. I also commend the bravery of Paris Jackson, it must have been very hard for her to say a single word, but she did and her words touched many hearts just like Michael did.

Martin Luther King Jnr daughter was excellent she is so eloquent and it was touching to hear how Michael had made Coretta Scott King smile.

The memorial service definitely helped me come to the realisation that Michael has gone and although he is not with us he will never be forgotten!!

Rest In Peace Michael Jackson and may your family find peace, in knowing that God wanted his child nearer to him.

Beautiful beautiful moving tributes all….but Mariah did not sing that like she did in the 90’s…….no no…she should have sat this one out!

Love Mariah

Tuesday, July 7, 2009 /

Do you remember the days when no matter how jacked up Mariah’s voice was, she would always pull it together and pull it off…she would even make the cracks sound melodic (kinda like Keyshia Cole tries to do now)….But it seems her voice is soooo far damaged now….It went from beautifully damaged and soulfully raspy (at the beginning of her career), to cute damaged (during the Rainow-Glitter era) and now it’s just…painfully damaged

I still enjoyed her perforamce, for its sentimental merit…No One should be singing that song, other than Michael or Mariah.

When Usher and Jermaine sang, I cried….When Al Sharpton spoke, my heart was extremely moved…his words were resonant and impactful, in the same way that Michael always was…RIP Michael

The memorial was so wonderful. The family did a great job organizing this and I’m glad that even during their time of grief, they were willing to share Michael with the world one last time and put together a service so amazing and respectful, it allowed all of us to say goodbye.

Some of the highlights definitely were Usher’s performance of “Gone Too Soon”, Jermaine Jackson singing “Smile” and Paris Jackson speaking about her father. Each of those moments had me in tears.

And while I love Mariah’s original rendition of “I’ll Be There”, her performance today was not up to par. Her vocals have definitely fallen off but I’m still glad she performed to show her love for MJ.

nothing happened to Mariah’s voice! she was emotional, & her voice was just shaky. does there have to be negativity? straighten up! I cried watching this… but The Memorial means closure. Michael can finally rest in peace now…

I have felt sorrow due to MJ’s death, but I did not cry until I saw Paris….That is unbearable! Like Janet said at the BET awards “Michael was a Icon to yah, but to us, he was family”…Marlon’s speak was very GOOD as well! That was deep about him asking MJ to hug his twin in heaven:(. Tears are fillin up as I type. Very sad, sad couple of weeks. Its like Pop Culture frozed. Nothin is appealin like it was before. All these artifical artists now, make a mockery to what MJ did! People can ccompare Chris to MJ as they please, but truth is, he could never impact Pop culture for the better GOOD of society. Brown is does nothing but reinforce the stereoypical negro. But whatever….point blank when MJ left, a huge chunk of Pop culture left as well and it will never come back! We just have to settle for this garbage or truly take note of the past when it comes to musical quality.

Hey yall… leave Mariah alone. She had to sing while (like all of us) emotional and sad. I can’t even speak when I am on the verge of crying never mind belt out a song. Mariah is still a powerhouse when it comes to singing. Give her a break (just like Jermaine) her voice was compromised due to emotions no doubt!

That was awesome..it wasn’t crazy like people predicted…it was just flat out- a nice homegoing service fit for a king!

I definitely enjoyed all the performances and speakers. The songs relived his genius and showed us others. My favorite performances being Jennifer Hudson, Usher, Shaheen, and the group singing We Are The World. I applaud the Rev. Al Sharpton, Brooke Shields, Magic Johnson, Smokey Robinson, Martin L. King III and Bernice King, and that Texas rep for so eloquently making Michael seem so personable. Big Ups to little Paris- that was so brave of her. :)
And also big ups to the whole Jackson Family for holding it down. They looked amazing and did a great job holding it together. Them brothers {whistles} were CLEEEEEAN!

What a legacy he left behind. Never let it die. Long Live the King!!!

The memorial was very heartfelt and MJ will never be forgotten glad all that could make it went and thanks to the media for covering it for those who couldnt make it there but could watch live. Although Chris Brown had his own drama w/ Rhi Rhi I’m glad he got to atleast sit in on the memorial because he truly was a fan. People who still hating on him about that let it go the boy is 19 or 20 and he is young and made mistakes..give him another chance if he messes up again then feed him to the bears..lol…I mean besides MJ supposedly had his indiscretions, T.I., Usher, Rihanna because I don’t even like Chris Brown but I believe in all fairness and she played her part and was fighting and hitting on that boy as well(court order is for her to stay away from him and vice versa they dont give orders like that to victims) Plaxico,Mike Tyson(beat on Robin Williams) he changed and ppl still love him, Lil Kim..the list goes on and on I’m just saying people make mistakes..but they learn to rebuild and become better and we learn to forgive.

Mariah’s performance was good, she had trouble with some of the high notes, but other than that it was a nice performance I cried throughout the whole memorial.

This is NOT about MARIAH CAREY. She was emotional and Natural, it wasn’t all about her CHEST AND HIGH HEELS. We all know she’s 39 and her voice has NOT held up like Chante Moores, Gladys Knight etc… her voice is damaged from giving YOU people all those high notes and belting notes for 16 years…

the woman’s voice is on it’s last leg. But i’m glad her lazy scared to sing live ass, came to support Michael.

Great Service. Paris made me cry. I am glad that she spoke because the media always dogges MJ on how he treated those kids. Her words spoke volume on how well he treated his kids.

As for Chris Brezzy being there, I am glad that the family invited him. The man made a mistake and let him pay his dues and move on with his life. Abuse can be mental or physical. So if no women abusers should have been there, the place would have been 1/2 empty.

Nobody said anything about KOBE being on stage speaking and he was accused of RAPE.

My Prayers to the Family. May God ease your pain and help you find peace in knowing that Michael is truly home now.

P.S.
How can people not love the Jacksons… they really are a beautiful black family. Strong and united in there times of need yet so beautiful and humble as individuals. LOVE THEM…

The Jackson brothers were so sharp with the gloves and the suits and the Jackson sisters..extremely beautiful black women especially Janet. (she looked like a million bucks)

Katherine deserves the Mother of the century award. She raised a hell of a family and is still here as the strong core that holds them together. God Bless Her. Beautiful!!

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with MC’s voice.
Sure, when she began it was a little rough, but my mom pointed out that she was emotional having to sing looking down at a casket. Of course something like that can take a toll on a person. By the end of the song, she progressed, and she actually did a fantastic job considering the occasion.

Usher’s performance was extremely touching. Had to hold back my tears when he broke down and barely managed to sing the end of the song.

Me

Tuesday, July 7, 2009 /

With the mood of today and the message that MJ tried to send throughout his life, I still can’t believe the comments and the hate spewed out towards CB! He was there, to pay his respects to his idol, like everyone else there! CB had his day in court and had every right to be there, and MJ probably would have wanted him to be there as well! MJ was a fan of CB and this memorial was all about Michael! It had nothing to do with CB! He didn’t perform, speak or even get any camera time! He wasn’t dancing in the ailse trying to get attention! We probably wouldn’t have even known he was there if his picture wasn’t posted! To No. 31 & 68 you both sound so ignorant and stupid! Do you honestly think CB was the only person in that auditorium who had legal troubles! Do you even think he was the only person there who was convicted felon! Please! Some of you people really need to try to focus on the message that Michael tried to share with us all, and stop acting as if we are God and have the right to judge! Grow up people!

RIP Micheal! We luv you and will remember you for always! Forever the King!

I agree with whoever said Chris Brown is just a stereotypical negro. This was a classy event. That boy has no class. He would have never been asked to perform. Usher is the epitome of class. As well as Neyo. They know how to get their grown man on at the right time and the right place. They both gave great performances at the 2 seperate events. Chris is far too egotistical and cocky. That’s why he will not make it to superstar status. He gets in his own way. Young and dumb. He sounds so ghetto and ignorant when he opens his mouth to speak. Constantly saying “you know what I’m saying?” between every other word. He also can’t sing. He sounds like a little boy going through puberty straining trying to hit notes he can’t hit. He can dance a little but if he stops IMITATING Michael what does he have left to show? NOTHING. Nothing special. Nothing original. He can have a seat. Thank you and I don’t care who gets mad. Truth hurts.

THIS SITUATION OF MICHAEL JACKSON HAS CHANGED ME AND MADE ME A BETTER PERSON, I THINK WE REALLY NEED TO TAKE CARE OF EACH OTHER INSTEAD OF MISTREATING EACH OTHER SO BAD WHILE ALIVE, WE NEED TO ACCEPT EACH OTHER UNIQUENESS AND STOP MAKING FUN OF EACH OTHER INSTEAD LETS SUPPORT EACH OTHER,LETS STOP GOING WITH THE HYPE AND BELIEVE IN THE TRUTH. WE HAVE TO UNDERSTAND THAT WHITE PEOPLE ARE ALWAYS GONNA TRY AND PUT US DOWN THEY DO THAT TO ALL SUCCESSFUL BLACK MAN. I thought the memorial was beautiful and very fitting. I was really moved by Jermaine, Usher and Stevie Wonders performances and Paris’ speech got me. I also thought that Brooke Shields did an excellent speach and so did Revered Sharpton. Paris seems soo mature for her age, and Janet looks like she’ll be a brilliant mum.

As for Mariah’s singing, although it was weak, lets no bash her. We should learn from the MJ situation that we should admire our great legends and Mariah is one of them. We bash legends when theyre alive and then mourn their passing; its soo hypocritical. Nothing will take away from the fact that Mimi is a legend and is still one of the greatest singer-songwriters to have walked the earth.

RIP MJ

I am glad to see that Chris Brown attended the Service, he loved Michael Jackson…

I won’t even address the Unforgiving people posting Negativity…

I am sure the persons saying negative things, praised Rihanna 4 her open jacket with her Breasts exposed & nipples pasted… Just goes to show the mentality of a Supporter…

I don’t know where to begin. Yesterday I cried so much watching the mermorial service and in a way I felt silly for doing so because I had never met Michael Jackson personally, never held a conversation with him, but over the years I have enjoyed his music immensely. He always inspired and uplifted his listeners and he brought all of us great joy in his music. I thought the memorial service was very beautifully done and I’m glad praises were also given to God for blessing Michael with his gift. My heart goes out to his children and family. May God keep them always!

NAY, it’s a big different between being accused in Kobe’s case and actually confessing to something in Chris Brown’s case. I was only able to catch the last half, but I did get to see Usher perform. He has such a beautiful voice. Those people who were singing at the end, I don’t know who they were, couldn’t sing and needed to shut up! It was a very nice service though. That’s so great that he was able to have an actualy funeral for all of his fans around the world! And to whoever said that Chris brown didn’t need to be there, oh grow up and get over it. You still on that? It’s funny because every singer including the “victim” herself has forgotten about it and forgave but someone unimportant as you hasn’t. This aint about Chris, but everybody whos fans of MJ deserved to be there and MJ went through worse troubles himself. I wish I would’ve seen Mariah perform. It’s funny how Chris Brown never did drugs or was an alcoholic and made one mistake. Beating a woman repeatively and controlling her a woman beater! Hitting a woman because she provocted you is totally different!

I think some of you are so pathetic for being grateful Beyonce was not at/apart of this service. No, it isn’t it about her, but if she wanted to be there, I don’t see any problem with her doing so. Other big name stars, including Alicia Keys, Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears, etc. were not there either. I don’t see anyone else celebrating them not being there. It’s ridiculous. I guess people really do hate this woman.

*End of rant

I thought the service was absolutely beautiful. Usher really moved me with “Gone Too Soon.” Rev. Al Sharpton spoke extremely well, but little Paris was the highlight. So sad.

@ 44. I agree, there was something about Usher’s performance and the way he touched the casket… not that I know him or how sincere he was, there was just something abt it that seemed choreographed.

It was an appropriate memorial tho, respectful, beautiful and classy.

The memorial was very touching and cried throughout the whole ceremony, from the time the casket came in up until after Paris said she loved her father so much. I’m not going to get on Mariah for her performance…yes her voice didn’t sound as good as it has in the past, but you all need to realize her performance was the first of the memorial as well as the first time she saw Michael’s casket. She was overcome by emotion I know, simply because I was and I was watching from the comfort of my own home. Jenifer Hudson’s performance was great, I loved the Free Willy song, Usher’s singing “Gone Too Soon” was emotional especially when he broke down at the end. Overall it was a moment/memorial that I will never forget, it was well put together and I know Michael would be pleased. My prayers go out to the entire Jackson family.

I been reading some of these bulls*** messages on here and I have one question 1.) Why do some of you people on here feel like Chris deserve to perform and be praised when he done so much wrong I mean NO ONE is trying to judge Chris but come on now let’s get serious and think about this from a positive and reality point of view okay. Micheal was for Peace and Harmony Mike was not for Violence whenever you beat a girl well anyone, whenever you beat someone so bad they turn black and blue and when someone actually been bitten by someone teeth print I mean that’s mean and hatred and also it’s very gross but if Chris Brown had a disease RiRi could have caught what he had I mean when you bite someone I mean damn that’s hate I mean Spitting on someone and biting someone that’s the most cruel and hateful and hurtful thing to do to someone I mean yeah IF GOD’S WILL and a liitle bit down the road when everyone done forget about it or beginning to forget about it yeah Chris can come back other than that DON’T NOBODY WANT TO HEAR S*** CHRIS HAVE TO SAY PERIOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Also>< Think about this what about the young generation if Chris made a comeback right now he will be setting an example that’s negative and don’t nobody want that for their Children,Nieces and Nephews,Cousins, ETC so that’s why everyone is ignoring him right now because everyone feels like he’s not ready yet for a comeback plain and simple crystal clear and I don’t care who get mad on here just like Number 82 says the TRUTH HURTS SO GET MAD I DON’T CARE AND I’M SURE EVERYONE ELSE ON HERE WHOSE SPEAKING THE TRUTH ABOUT CHRIS DON’T GIVE A F*** AS WELL

RIP MICHAEL YOU WAS THE WORLD’S GREATEST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That service was perfect. PERFECT. I hoped Mariah would sing that song. When she came out as the first performer I was sooo excited. Yeah she didn’t sound like Mariah. Did she have a cold? But I still enjoyed it immensely. Usher….OMG…that was the most moving performance…..OMG……(who cares where Chris Brown was)….Usher was the perfect pick.

I was moved by Berry Gordy’s speech. The King of Pop does not do MJ justice. And everyone there seemed to agree. And the Coretta Scott-King story wasn’t a surprise at all.

The only thing that hurts me is that I think MJ didn’t know how much he was loved. I really, really hope he was looking down at the service and was in awe.

And J-Hud looked soooo beautiful!

I just saw that Mariah’s CD dropped yesterday. Thumbs up to her for not plugging her CD release.

When they brought his casket out I just kept saying to myself, “this is not happening, I can’t believe this.”

I really, really hope these ‘entertainers’ of today would look up to MJ for EVERYTHING he did and not just try to copy his moves etc. I don’t believe in reverencing ANY man however MJ took his talent and tried to make the world a better place. Now when you compare him to lets say Madonna, what has she done to make the world a better place. Ok so what you’ve made hit songs. But what have you done??? She only did things to shock ppl. How is that making the world a better place. These celebs don’t seem to get, as MJ did, that there may be a bigger purpose to why you have the gift to entertain. It’s not to tongue kiss two young women on stage. But that’s why I honestly don’t know of any of celeb (maybe Oprah, maybe) that I would skip work and sit at the t.v. for 10 hrs until I literally had a headache from watching it.

I know (I hope) MJ is still in shock up in heaven viewing the turn out and outpouring of love soo many ppl had for him. When the minister asked ppl there and in tv land to grab someone hand to pray, my sis and I did with no reservation. I don’t know of anyone outside of my immediate family that I would do that for. It was as if we all (everyone, everywhere) needed comfort b/c it was hard to say goodbye. I still can’t believe that was Michael Jackson being rolled out in that casket……..it doesn’t make any sense. If he was 80 I would still be sad but 50! I did not turn the tv on not one time today. Nor the radio. It’s too much. It’s overwhelming. Good nite guys.

@68 (and any other post that mentions her) - Beyonce was reported to have attended the private service with the family. As far as her “Broadway” - thank BET for not letting her perform I’ll Be There as THEY thought it was too sad and wanted Ave Maria. The set list is floating all over the net and this is still unclear?

Anywhoo, RIP MJ G.O.A.T.

It was a beautiful service–something that we will never ever forget. MJ was the original, the blueprint, the masterpiece. As a child, he was my first boyfriend–cool chocolate brother with a big afro and bell bottoms accompanied by 4 other fine chocolate drops. I am all cried out. My heart is forever broken over the loss of this brilliant gift from God. I know he is finally at peace and for that, I am glad.

WAIT! CHRIS BROWN was there but didn’t PERFORM? first he was asked to perform at the BET AWARDS in TRIBUTE to Michael Jackson, but it was said that REV. Al SHARPTON & JAYZ had a say in him not being able to perform.

And now a once in a life time event (MEMORIAL service for the ICON that inspired him) he still had to sit down & WATCH?

CHRIS BROWN still has fans, that love him still (Despite the RIHANNA incident) . I think we will more than WELCOME him back with open arms, & what better time than now. CHRIS can sing really good & He can dance his ass off. We would embrace his come back 100%. Why is this young man still being punished for his WRONGS / MISTAKES? My god he is a human being. NOBODY IS PERFECT—-LET HIM SING & DANCE!

ANYWAY…I was a huge Michael Jackson fan back in the day (anybody 30 & older grew up with MJ music in the house, & had his posters on their wall almost for certain. If you are younger & knew about MJ music & videos…your parents get credit for schooling you on the music ICON).

THE MEMORIAL service was BEAUTIFUL way better than I thought it would be. If you didnt shed tears when Michaels daughter Paris spoke toward the very end of the ceremony…you are just a cold hearted person. This is such a sad, sad, situation & how Michael had to leave the world like he did. The WORLD can be SOOOO CRUEL sometimes. Like Marlon said, “MAYBE NOW they would leave you alone…”

Even if they dont leave him alone (which the MEDIA is NOT), his spirit is FREE from the body it inhabited for 50 years. Michael Jackson was put through so much during his stay on this earth. NOW he wont give a damn—where he is right now, none of this CRAP MATTERS.

People need to forget about Chris Brown performing. Maybe it would have been alright for BET,but anyone who watched the memorial knows that it wasn’t about somebody IMITATING MJ(which is exactly what Chris would have done). It was more of a classy, spiritual event. It wasn’t about trying to dance and sing like MJ. I’m ick of this stale argument. It is pointless. Chris was there to pay his respects. You all need to do the same and take this discussion to Chris’ fansite. This is all about MICHAEL JACKSON!!

Oh and for the record mariah’s performance pissed me off! Just like it did at Pres Obama’s ball..I don’t know what’s up with her but she seriously needs to get it together

I mean I REALLLY wanted her to perform this, crossed my fingersand all! And for her to half step?? What?! She shoulda just sang One Sweet Day then (in which case would really make me cry) and let Boyz II Men sing I’ll Be There

@ QUEEN IM GLAD YOU DONT HOLD THE KEYS TO DEATH HELL AND THE GRAVE. CHRIS HAD EVERY RIGHT TO BE THERE MICHAEL WASN’T PERFECT NOBODY IS AND WHILE I DON’T CONDONE VIOLENCE NONE OF US REALLY KNOW WHAT THE ALTERCATION WAS ABOUT. ALL OF THE NEGATIVE PUBLICITY MIKE HAD ON HIM AND HE STILL CAME OUT AND GAVE THE WORLD A GREAT SHOW. IF MIKE/ CHRIS WENT BEFORE THEIR MAKER IN PRIVACY AND ASKED FOR FORGIVENESS THEN THAT’S THE END OF IT. WHO THE H’LL ARE YOU TO JUDGE. IGNORANT!
