‘ROUND THE WAY: SOLANGE SPEAKS ON HER BUZZ CUT VIA TWITTER

It’s safe to say that Solange Knowles was the talk of the net on Thursday, as well as on Twitter. Well the singer spoke via her twitter page about all the “controversy”:

listen. if. i. wanted. to. make. a. statement. i. would. have. twitpic’d. photo shoot. ect. i. was. simply. taking. my. son. to. school. stupid. paps. took. pic. ive. had. my. hair. cut. like. this. for. two. weeks. i. was. NOT. inspired. by anyone. but. my. self. i. have. done. this. twice. in. my. life. i. was 16. i was 18. did. not care about your opinion. then. dont. care. now. dont. need. your. attention. or. your. co-sign. dont. want. a. edge. up. or a perm. because. im not trying. to make this “a style” or a statement. i. just. wanted. to. be. free. from. the. bondage. that. black. women sometimes. put. on. themselves. with. hair. this. phase. of. my. life. i. want to spend . the time. the energy. and the money. on something else. not in the hair salon. im. not. mad. at . all of you. that have made your opinions known. and have sent negative. energy. my way. i expected this of you. you. have. the right to have. an opinion. so. do. i.

I’m feeling Solange, I recently cut my dreads off and am rocking a baby fro. DO YOU PEOPLE. And for the record, Cassie didn’t start anything – it’s been done and will be done 1000x over again.

  2. killalipstick

    real talks.

  3. Jazz

I don’t think she looks right w/ it. She has a wierd shaped head; the cut doesn’t work well with her.

  4. Nopy

“Don’t need your attention or your cosign.”

    Solange got gangsta’.

  5. B...

  6. Jonai

Solange I love your hair…and too bad too many people have so much to say…thy always miss the point. You rock it girl, cause many sistas are becoming loose from the bondage

  7. Nopy

“i. just. wanted. to. be. free. from. the. bondage. that. black. women sometimes. put. on. themselves.”

That sounds like a “statement” to me.

  8. wilkes

like every black woman i meet. bald. child out of wedlock. weed head. divorced. yuck.

  9. Cherry Almond

Kudos to Solange. You do not need a weave, wig or relaxer to be a beautiful, black woman.

  10. NikNak

    What Wilkes?

anyhoo. Should I post the links from this very same site of pregnant Solange with a twa?

    http://concreteloop.com/2...ics-of-a-pregnant-solange

  11. TaLacey

AMEN!!!! Solange went so beyond telling the truth… BiG Up’s from me on this one!!!!! She looks great natural…

  12. HOLLYWOOD BS

Funny how most of the people complaining are not even whites. It’s predominantly blacks and black blogs who are attacking solange and calling her negative names (names which if white people used, they will be called racist).

Self-hate in the black communuity is startling. What a shame!

  13. UM...I GUESS

truth in words. good for you solange. i personally love the look!

  14. The natural journey is really a real beautiful experience I wish more would embrace their uniqueness, but to each to each its own. I must say I really like solo’s cut it really fits her, and if she likes it that’s all that matters.

  15. curious

@ANGEL…when did you have locks? how long did you grow them for? i’ve had mine for 5 years–loving them to death! and they’re much appreciated here in the bay, where i live. if i cut them though, i’m definitely sporting a fade–and co-sign to the person who said AFRICAN women have rocked the low cut from the beginning of time. so, please stop the madness about amber and cassie being cutting edge. go to any african country, and you’ll see beautiful-for-days women of all ages, and skin tones rocking low cuts.

  16. NONAME

she was taking her kid to school in the middle of summer? Ummm OOOOHHH K. didnt know preschool had summer school too LMAO

  17. IM MY OWN WOMAN

I THINK SHE LOOKS FIERCE…… ANYONE WITH THE NERVE TO DO IT (BECAUSE I DON’T) IS A SHOW STOPPER TO ME. MY HAIR OR WEAVE WHATEVER U WANT TO CALL IT (AND CALL ME WHAT U WANT) IS MY STRENGTH!!!! I APPLAUD HER!!!!!

  18. Omit-the-Small-Ones

You’re right, Cassie didn’t start it. first person I saw with that look was Raven Simone, so she needs to stop taking credit for it.

I think Solange did the right thing to tell “so called” people a thing or two about themselves. She looks cool and its her own damn prerogative to rock her do the way she wants – go head girl!!

  19. College Sweetheart (FMUniv)

Lol I So Love Her Im Glad Its Artist Again That Will Actually Speak Her Mins And Nit Be Publicly Correct All The Time.. I Guess She Wont Ever Be Picture Perfect Beyonce.. Let Hating Start.. Tisk Tisk When With Opnions Get Blamed For Having Alterior Motives

  20. NYCBABE

I SAID IT BEFORE IN HER PREVIOUS POST & I’LL SAY IT AGAIN! MY HAIR IS EVEN SHORTER THAN HERS & IT’S SOOOO FREEING. U WOULDN’T BELIEVE. I STILL ROCK THE WIGS WHEN I WANT TO, FOR VERSATILITY, PLUS THEY SIT DOWN BETTER ANYWAY!!! MY BODY EVEN FEELS BETTER WITHOUT THE CHEMICALS I CONSTANTLY THREW INTO MY HAIR.

GO ‘AHEAD SOLANGE!!! ALL FEMALES SHOULD TRY CUTTING THEIR HAIR SHORTER THAN 6 INCHES AT LEAST ONCE IN THEIR LIFETIME. U WILL FEEL 10X BETTER ABOUT URSELF, IF NOT FOR THE LOOK OF IT, THE FACT THAT U ACTUALLY HAD THE BALLS TO DO IT & THAT UR NOT F*CKING WITH HARSH CHEMICALS ANYMORE!!!

  21. College Sweetheart (FMUniv)

No Name Private Schools Get To School Year Round Most Of The Time I Did..

  22. @Curious. I didn’t have them for long. I’m going to start the process again because I wasn’t feeling them and they weren’t coming out right. They were more like baby dreads when I cut them tho.

  23. NYCBABE

@15, ACTUALLY IF UR TALKING PRE-SCHOOL/DAYCARE, THAT’S YEAR ROUND. THEM LIL KIDDIES DON’T GET “SUMMER BREAKS” LMAO

  24. TWITTER

“Don’t need your attention or your cosign.”

HAHA THAT MEANS DON’T DEFEND OR HATE!

  25. yomama

    get em solange
    who cares what people think
    majority does not rule!

  26. Ladyssolady

I have found that she gets defensive about a lot. Like if you don’t care what people think, they why say anything? #8, lol.

  27. ReBeLR

Was the period after every word necessary? :|

  28. focul

it still sucks on solange, she should of ask amber for he babaer, does not suit her at all….she should be happy she getting this press, this will prob be the only time she gets huge press and makes the trending topic on twitter

  29. LiLi

YEEESSS SAY THAT!! I have been wearing my hair natural & short short for almost 5 years and now I’am at a fade and loving it. It’s not a statement nor am I trying to be like anyone only inspiration I have are my aunts who had fades back in the day.

  30. HEATHCLIFF

    I fucs with Solange.

  31. Trina

Solange’s hair is so hawt!!! Natual is the way to go and I wish other Black women would free themselves as well. I did the B/C a couple of months ago and never felt so free in my life!!!

  32. CNNWANNABE

Like she said, it’s freeing and that is the F6CK!ng Truth! Dang I get tired of weaves and perms too. Hiding shame behind fake hair. I’m learning to love my Natural Hair too.

As for Cassie? Please. She hasn’t started a D@MN thing. India Arie and the likes started this (recently). Black women have worn their hair like this for years. There was always some attractive black woman with the big loop earrings in the 70′s and 80′s rocking this look. Not to mention all of the African women who do. Cassie can go to…..she ain’t started nothing!

  33. JstBReal

II really wish Beyonce had Solange personality cuz she’s far more interesting to me. I digg a chic who speaks her mind no matter what so I’ma give her props. Do you Solange fahreal.

  34. ♥♥PEACHEZZZ♥♥

I THINK I JUST BECAME A SOLANGE FAN! LOL! TELL ‘EM GIRL!

  35. Kyla

She kind of looks like Bianca from America’s Next Top Model with her hair like that/in that picture.

When I first saw this picture of her I didn’t even think about her copying anyone – I knew other people would say she copied people like Amber Rose but I didn’t think she did.

I would LOVE to cut my hair that short but I’m too scared. I just cut my hair and it’s a little past my shoulders – the shortest I’ve gone is a bob type look but my hairs naturally curly and I didn’t really like how the curls and the bob looked so I had to always straighten it.

I think Solange looks fine, her hair looks a little “peasy” but it’s fine. I prefer her short hair than the fake hair she puts on her head.

  36. ellegirl

I don’t care about her hair, I just wonder why her attitude stinks all the time. It’s not necessary to be so quick to snap.

  37. Mrs. PT

If she don’t care what people are saying , why do she feel the need to explain or address the criticism? On the other hand, I feel her on what she said about being free of bondage, etc. I want to go natural myself… maybe one day.

  38. MWNY

I mean Amber did not start the short hair. Many black women who do the BIG CHOP do it all the time. Again, I did it last year and got soo much heat from family and friends. I am considering it again I have a whole heap of new growth and my hair is not long anyway. I loved it natural hate that I didn’t stay that way.

  39. TWITTER

LOL @ EVERYBODY TALKING ABOUT THEY FEEL FREE WITH NATURAL HAIR. IS IT THAT SERIOUS? HAIR IS HAIR! IT SHOULD NOT BE THE BASIS OF YOUR LIFE WHETHER YOU GET RELAXERS OR NOT YOU SHOULD JUST BE HAPPY WITH WHO YOU ARE. HAIR DOES NOT MAKE YOU AND THAT GOES BOTH WAYS.

  40. eagle.

    WTH?!…

Its not that I (or anyone for that matter) thinks she’s trying copy another person, I just don’t think she looks good with it. & I’m talking about BOTH times. Its not flattering.

  41. I LOVE BLACK PEOPLE

I love it. I wrote an article about this. People lambasting her are usually black and it highlights the colonial/slave mentality that says u are ugly if u do not adhere to a Eurocemtric model of beauty standards i.e. straight/weave/blonde etc. Youre right Angel DO YOU!!!

  42. ellegirl

I agree twitter. I don’t haven’t permed my hair in almost six years. It wasn’t a huge decision. I just didn’t like getting it permed so I stopped. Very simple. I don’t let natural hair or any kind of hair define me. It’s just hair. who cares how you wear it?

  43. romanticwish

i feel her 110% she kept it 100 and i actually like it, it fits her face. i am a black women who has the same struggle with my hair and i see this as an inspiration. just wish i had the guts lol. but i love her ambition and it appears to be geniune. another person who looks good with hair that short is Jada Pinket at the end of the movie Set It Off. DOPE AF!

  44. Grown&Sexy

You know…..i like solange and i think she is very talented and pretty young lady ! however, think her hair fell out because it has no shape or style to it. she could have made more clean in my opinon- more stylish.. But if you like it i love it . so do you boo. I dont get !

  45. gmerc

She ain’t tryin ta force it like the other ones…..BUT she did look better B4.

  46. Art Official Intelligence

I LOVE NATURAL HAIR…BUT THIS IS NOT A GOOD LOOK FOR HER, SORRY…YOU CAN BE NATURAL AND STILL LOOK CUTE…THIS IS NOT BECOMING ON HER AT ALL.

  47. UKNOW

Angel, as much as I love your positive approach to reporting on black celebs, you are so compromising your journalistic integrity. First of all, Solange was obviously inspired to cut her hair after LaLa shaved hers. It was mere days after LaLa went for her Cassie-inspired (Cassie was inspired by model Alice Dellal, by the way. It’s her signature cut) that Solange began throwing hints about shaving her own loaded with blatant equivocating. “Remember when I shaved my head in HS” and “Remember I was known for that phase”…obvious attempts to preempt Cassie-or even Amber Rose-comparisons. The truth is, Solange is often guilty of being contrived. This latest move was obviously her following a trend. That one of her closest friends did it, professing that she was inspired by Cassie and we have Amber Rose in the spotlight right now, OF COURSE she did it because it is the in thing to do. And she did in fact allude to her shaved head in thinly veiled attention-seeking messages. She very much announced that she’d “done it,” again promptly adding, “again.” You’ve only to allow yourself to read just one or two of her tweets to get she’s someone desperately in search of some attention.

  48. Peaches

I’m so happy that Solange stood up to all the haters. Let’s face it, many, if not, most black female celebs are rocking weaves. Does that make them more talented by the length of their extensions? NO! Solange, you are a beautiful woman that obviously don’t have time for ignorance. Do your thing regardless of what others THINK OUTLOUD!

  49. UKNOW

And, the most damning evidence of her failed attempt at coopting the latest look is the wig. If you’re going to burn your bra, you don’t tape your breasts up. SMH

  50. HEATHCLIFF

    47

Did you not read where she said she had cut all her hair off 2 other times in her life ?
How was she capitolizing on a fad when she shaved her hair back in 03 Your a fool if you think a black woman shaved her whole head in an attempt to capitolize on a trend.

  51. Mrs. Sk8board p (ak & bk stan)

Yes, Solo speak on it. You look beautiful.

  52. Fancy

Ummm…ok! Why is there a period after each word???? I guess she has a lot of time on her hands. And she wants to break away from the bondage????? And then go back to it? I don’t get it! If you break away from the bondage, shouldn’t you try to make it permenant? Who deliberately alternates between the same bondage??? Whatever!!

  53. LOVE IT OR LEAVE IT

Hopefully more folks will come around to natural hairstyles once Halle Berry’s new movie ‘Nappily Ever After’ comes out next year. She plays a woman who cuts off her long relaxed hair, opting for a short natural hairstyle instead. The character faces a lot of backlash, but never felt more free. . .

Well, in real life, it takes a lot of courage to accept our God-given hair texture, but I’m glad folks are at least experimenting with new looks. More power to Solange and to everyone who dares to be different.

  54. UKNOW

    #50
There are all sorts of reasons that she might have shaved her head before. That it was a trend then too, among them. However, the two circumstances aren’t mutually exclusive.

  55. Tasha F

    @ 47:

    I agree.

And furthermore, if Solange’s really doesn’t give a DAMN about what people have to say than, why the HELL, would she even address a “FAN”. Sometimes Solange be on Bullshit.

  56. Jazz

She’s still wack. She will always stay in the shadows of her big sis.

  57. Blue Suede Shoes

I like the fact that Solange does what she wants w/ no apologies, but why does she always sound like she’s mad? I don’t know, but everytime I here about her, it’s her addressing people. Let people talk. If they say s/t negative, shrug your shoulders and keep it moving.

  58. BAD BAD BITCH

people need to get over it.

  59. UKNOW

She is ridiculous. “More people talked about me [here, on twitter] than Iran.” Are you kidding me? She has said NOTHING about Iran. She has, not once, expressed an opinion or put out one tweet espousing some view or idea related to the dissenters’ plight. She’s just sooo lame and fake. And what a stale meme: “you talk about me and can’t even locate Iran on a map.” Yeahhhh, you’re so interested which is why we can find you opining at length. lol

  60. LINDA

ALL i know is that hair go with that big old slave nose in those big old bubble lips free from bondage lmao. Can you say color purple two. The new in free sealy. You go girl free yo mind yo ass will follow.
