ALBUM REVIEW: TREY SONGZ’S READY

Monday, August 31, 2009

Virginia native and R&B singer Trey Songz returns after two years with his third offering, Ready. Following the release of two mixtapes earlier this year—Genesis, which included music he recorded before his debut album, I Gotta Make It, and Anticipation, which helped occupy fans a couple of months before his new album was released—Trey Songz is letting the world know he’s ready.

LISTEN UP:
♫ TREY SONGZ - Neighbors Know My Name
♫ TREY SONGZ - Does He Do It
♫ TREY SONGZ - Yo Side of the Bed

His previous albums included a little baby-making music, but this album takes it to another level. Citing R. Kelly as an early influence when he first appeared on the scene and later calling him out for attempting to remain relevant to younger listeners on “D.O.K (Death of Kellz)”, Trey sounds a little like him on the album intro, appropriately titled “Panty Droppa”, and “Neighbors Know My Name”, a slow jam on which the 24-year-old reflects on his sexual prowess and what that means for the neighbors during his sexual exploits. The album continues with “I Invented Sex”, again reiterating what he said before but this time with Drake on the track. Teaming up again with Stargate who produced “Can’t Help But Wait” (his most successful single yet) on “I Need a Girl” was genius as they delivered another hit which also served as the album’s lead single. Here, the album shows another side of Trey as he contemplates commitment and carries it over to the rock-tinged ballad “One Love”, produced by Brian Michael Cox. But he’s not done with sex just yet.

On “Does He Do It”, in standard, repetitive Sean Garrett form, Trey asks his lady if her other man does it like he does it. Fabolous joins the party on “Say Aah”, a catchy, upbeat track, which is either a spin off or ripoff of Jamie Foxx’s hit, “Blame It (On the Alcohol)”. With Gucci Mane and Soulja Boy on “LOL :-)”, this cheesy and irrelevant track definitely doesn’t fit as the flow of the album is completely disrupted.

After that’s out the way, it’s time for love, as Trey coos on the smooth, mellow “Ready to Make Luv” which prefaces “Jupiter Love”, another song of the same caliber as Trey breaks it down over a sultry song perfect for setting the mood. “Be Where You Are” is an uptempo, experimental production by Christopher Henderson. Preceding Drake’s hit single, “Successful” is an interesting spot for it, though, since Trey declares he wants the money, cars, clothes and hoes. It’s even more interesting that this was even included, although this version tosses Lil Wayne’s verse aside and throws an extra verse in from Trey.

The last few songs bring about yet another side of Trey. “Black Roses” represents “a dying love” and a new sound for Trey, produced by Bei Maejor. On “Love Lost”, Trey laments that, “I never loved you like I should” with his heart on his sleeve as he pleads, “And now I see the man you need / When I look into the mirror I see change / Then I close my eyes and wish you could see the same / But it’s too late.” “Yo Side of the Bed” closes the album with Trey helplessly stating that he “doesn’t want to sleep if you’re not there” with its amazing guitar rift, reminiscent of a Prince/”Purple Rain” vibe.

Trimming the fat with a few select tracks on Ready (notably “LOL :-)”, “Say Aah” and “Successful”) would make this one of the best R&B albums of the year. It’s for that reason that although Trey may be ready and is heading in the right direction, he still has a little bit farther to go.

My Picks: “Neighbors Know My Name”, “I Invented Sex”, “I Need a Girl”, “Does He Do It”, “Jupiter Love”, “Black Roses”, “Yo Side of the Bed”

I hoped Trey would go the Maxwell route and just make some good rnb jams and not fool around with tracks like LOL. I’ve admired him since Gotta Leave but I guess he has to try and push album sales, however Im not feeling him like that for some reason. Anyways I’d like if CL put up a Whitney background cause she’s the comeback of ‘09 and Im sure her sales will reflect that.

The Truth is Trey’s CD will FLOP like all the others have.

This has nothing to do with his image but his lack of vocal range and his boring material. R&B should push things and this review is just not objective or truthful.

It’s hard to be objective and have Trey as the background I mean come on CL.

The same thing will happen with this as his past efforts luke warm sales.

Trey need a better producer who just does not see him as some boring sex object.

Try to be more innovative with the subject matter and the actual singing. You can only go so far appealing to teen girls. Not to compare Trey with Mavin Gaye but Marvin was an artist so was Michael Jackson. It’s sad that we only have people like R. Kelly who really push music forward. Even Maxwell did a superior job to this CD.

Sorry this is an epic FAIL.

I’m at work and after listening to the few tracks and seeing this background, I’m agreeing with Young Money 100%. I wanna support our artists and everything but Trey tries way too hard and I’m sorry ladies, but he just seems alil too soft to me. Yes he has an aight body, but his vocals still shaky in contrast to somebody like Tyrese who sang the tribute on the BET Awards.

Whitney definitely deserves the background in my opinion seeing as how she’s an amazing artist and people are actually looking forward to her on the scene not this alleged “gay” artist.

Trey would had a better shot if he didn’t take the wrong path by dissing R. Kelly and partnering up with SB I believe. First off, R. Kelly sold millions of records so that man is already accomplished and for Trey to say he’s trying to stay relevant..umm you never were yourself sir. The album title itself is false since Trey is nowhere near ready for the big time. So glad Maxwell bringing real music back on the scene for r and b.

TO THE GAY COMMENT IDIOTS

- i live in ATL.. Trey has a home in Kennesaw.. I’ve been around him a few times doing simple studio things.. He’s not gay. So quit that, ya’ll n!ggas act like children

but like i said before the album is flame all the way through.. i wish he didnt put LOL on there but other than that its dope..

@ LEE

Right?????

How you gonna even try and diss R. Kelly when you only have out one CD and it flopped. Trey is all gimmicks. Like that tasteless Honey.com interview and how misogynistic he comes off towards females as if that is come turn on for women???

And tell me how many times you see dude without a shirt on??? And those corny 1990-ish videos on the beach I mean come on dude.

People like this kill urban music and then they T-Pain us by showing up on anything and every disposable type of song.

Just watch his sales FLOP and then maybe we can hear about real singers who give you your money’s worth. Do more on Maxwell, and Teedra Moses, and less on Trey, Chris Brown, Drake and these hyped up types that will leave you really wanting your money back at the end of the day.

Don’t believe the HYPE!

All these comments around about Trey is true. People have seen him with dudes so its not just rumors. Trey just trying to push out an image thats completely false and its time people know what kinda fraud he really is. Hes gonna flop like all the other cds hes put out specially since he going against Whitney!

I would believe Trey is gay over Drake. If there’s any supscious shit going on Trey Songz is starting it. I’m hearing he rubbing on drake’s booty & some gay shit. Hmm ? Maybe girls getting boring to Trey . Since he been doing them for YEARS . Hm.

_

Drake ? No he anit gay. Lil wayne? Sureeee .

@ MiZZ DIVA ; LISA ; LEXUSGYRL.

Where’s the proof of him being with other dudes? & how you know they was his lover? You don’t so SHUT THE SHIT DOWN.

@ Young Money

Dunt put Drake name in that cause drake has the BEST MATERIAL in the game. His shit is never wack. & some people say “Oh haha drake was reading from his blackberry when it’s suppose to be a freestyle” yeaa so like he going remember everything. He’s a rapper not a magician. I rather him read then studder his words (:

Drake is the shit hop off of his dick. ; & if trey is “really” gay then it anit Drake’s problem.

Yeah I’m so blowed by all these claims of Trey and Dorian from College Hill plus they’re saying he has a dude in VA. I’ve always thought of him as cute, but something bout him just set my gaydar buzzing lol. So glad CL took him down as the background. :)

90.

Bria

@ HUNEYLUV

Lol ! You know what I have to agree with you. Because idk but im starting to believe that Trey might be a little Gay or bisexual (im sure he LOVES women). My Gaydar is buzzing a little as well.

But when it comes to Drake being gay my gaydar stays on silent. My nigga is not gay, just because he hang with trey? Nah. That’s not good enough. You CL haters needa stop putting rumors on here.

Now I don’t care how Trey album do; it sounds like it’s going do great though; but Drake might sell 100,000 of thousands a copies in this reccession. His shit is hard.

91.

LexusGyrl

Tuesday, September 1, 2009 /

@Bria well if your gaydar buzzing alil theres no need to even have proof. I live in Atlanta and know people in the industry who’ve seen him with dudes. Trust me Im not trying to hate on anybody, but the type of person Trey really is..its not cool forreal. I know a guy who was really feeling Trey and he was out fooling around and being deceitful so thats a big reason why I dont like him. I dont think its a rumor if so many people saw youtube videos of how gay this guy really is as well as comments stating the same.

92.

Tuesday, September 1, 2009 /

@ Bria

LMAO!!!!

Lil Wayne…gay? NO. Drake is definately Bi (sorry, I just can’t shake the feeling) Trey is NOT Gay. You probably think I’m crazy, buy my gaydar has never failed me. LOL, all my friends always laugh about my “gaydar”, but they all have admitted its never wrong!!!

BTW. To those who mentioned Maxwell

I’m glad he is back doing his thing, he is very talented. I love Pretty Wings.

93.

Tuesday, September 1, 2009 /

@ Tasha wow your gaydar didnt go off on Trey lol? I met him a few times and he just seemed like he was really trying to come off as a lady’s man like talkng about all this freaky stuff and I’m looking at him like, are you kidding me lol? He’s a very well groomed man, but I really think hes the gay fish over Drake. You know how some guys just trying to cover up their inner homosexuality. I wouldve bought his album but its a few tracks that set him back so Im just gonna save my $10

Yesss Maxwell is so back!! I can’t wait til he comes to Florida on tour.

94.

Amara

Tuesday, September 1, 2009 /

I appreciate the review, I thought it was really thorough, props to that.
The gay rumors are bizarre , is that what 09 is coming down to ? Giving your bro a hug is defined as being homosexual? Smh at all of you…

THE ALBUM ! I love it. I really do . Anticipation mixtape was amazing . I loved the ballads, I loved his whole demeanor, flowed well, messages great. etc. It def. got me ready for the album . I think some songs on Anticipation were HOTTER than some on READY, but I think they just need to grow on me.

As far as Trey’s career, I think he has definitely grown from TREY DAY to READY . The way he talks about sex isn’t as figurative and wanton as he did in “Grub on You” which was an R.Kelly type of song to me. He’s showing more passion with his melodies, being more serious about his sexual activity and keeping it mature; “Jupiter Love”, “Neighbors Know My Name” .

As far as LOL :-) and Succesful , I agree that they are a little random and could’ve easily been on another album , BUT I feel as though with Trey’s growth and maturity has come a new level of confidence, where he is still Tryna Make it but he has a lot more experience under his belt, so tracks like LOL :-) and Succesful are appropiate. They give the album more character and it makes not so heavy as his first album.

Ready, shows a lot of range I NEVER knew Trey had. “Yo Side of the Bed”, “Black Roses” and a couple tracks on the mixtape show his growth in controlling his voice. I’m obviously a big Trey fan, if this novel does not tell enough, personally I think this album was a better outcome than his 2n album BUT as far as GOOD music, and good ballads, I think his first CD was emaculate. I’ve been listening to all 3 albums all day and overall I’m just really impressed with him and respect him so much as an artist. I honestly thought he was gonna stop after Just Gotta Make It, because it didn’t do so well and he was sort of out shadowed by Chris Brown at that time, but I appreciate and respect his drive and honestly CAN’T HELP BUT WAIT to see what he’s gonna be doing 5 years from now!

First of all I don’t believe Trey or Drake is gay at all they only people saying that must be chics he turned down. On his music i’m in the music industry and i believe Trey could be a mega star selling millions, he needs to change his entire camp he needs to get some very talented management and production instead of employing his friends they are holding him back he has out grown them and he needs to separate those ties. the people behind the scenes making the decision are stupid LOL:) should have NEVER been on this album. as as matter of fact he is a totally different artist that soulja boy yea soulja boy is a mega star but he is appealing to children how can you put him on a album with songs that are clearly for adults. Now your giving him proceeds from your album thats hurting the sells not helping them. the same with successful why are earth did they put that song on there did you really think that would make the album hotter NOT!!!!

The tracks on this album are ok but who want to hear about sex in every song there could have been a great deal more of diversity with him, his voice is great why would anyone put him in one little box and say sex sell so this is what i will do and thats all your the artist not the video hoe. liseting to this is like listen to jeezy sind about drugs in every song…just doesnt fly!

Overall i am disappointed i expected more he will get some sells from groupie hoes that want to lay him but not people who like good music. Trey you are great stop letting the people behind you runin you, you have so much potential but you keep going backwards!!!!

Leon

Wednesday, September 2, 2009 /

I think his is marginally talented, I think his deal is more because of his looks and physique than his vocal ability. Nothing about him reads as special or long lasting. If you ask me he is clearly trying to situate himself to fulfill R.Kelly’s spot in the industry when its up. It’s clear that sex will be his main selling point.

I see his career fizzling out after awhile, after all there are much more entertaining artist in the business. Artist such as Usher, Chris Brown and Mario have either better entertainment value, better vocals or both.

Personally of the three aforementioned artist, I believe Mario’s superior vocals (because he is sort of like Trey Songz) will carry the day. Trey has about five years left, I give the next two albums flop potential before he moves into acting where he may achieve some sense of long term success.

103.

Wednesday, September 2, 2009 /

Leon I agree fully with you with your comment. Trey really doesn’t spark the mainstream interest and thats why I believe he’s been outshined by fellow VA resident, Chris Brown. Even with Chris legal woes, hes still managed to stay in the media whereas I look at Trey as still a struggling artist. His voice is very mediocre and his looks are alil feminine to me, however I did hear he’s going to be in the Wendy Williams movie coming up and something else so maybe he’ll have better luck there.

LOL : ), me and my friends were talking about her the other day. One of my friends thinks that she is Questioning her sexuality, which makes it hard to tell. However, to me she rings lesbo, I bet sooner or later it will come out. For some reason women don’t have as a hard time with sexuality like men do.

Ok…There are some real haters up here. I mean I love Trey and this album is soooooooo OMG. Simply put. U cant compare him to Maxwell cause Maxwell is Neo-Soul. If you going to put him in a catagory compare him to J. Holiday or Tyrese those are the people in the same genre of music. And you cant put Chris Brown in the catagory either because his fan base are girls under 20. To me Trey relates more to a fan base in their 20’s and early 30’s soooo if you gonna compare him to people at least compare him to people that is in the same catogory as him. And stop hating…he is a young artist trying to find his way in the industry, It takes alot to put out an album, esp one as good as this one.

106.

Boss Lady

Wednesday, September 2, 2009 /

I got all of Trey’s album. Even on the first album he was talking about sex with ” In the Middle” and ” Ur Behind”, but as an artist you are suppose to grow like on Trey Day ” Sex for yo stereo” and ” We should be”. We all know that R. Kelly is a HUGE influence on him, he is like Kells number one fan. So I knew that this album was going to be more sexual. I mean listening to the Intro… he lets you know what he is going to be talking about. And everybody is saying that he is trying to be like R. Kelly. I mean come on now… when Usher an Chris Brown came out you saw and heard that there were heavily influence by MJ. But anyway…..

The album is hot. I agree with most of you saying they should have kept ” Successful ” LOL ;)” and that song with Fabolous. They also should have kept ” Wanna be where you are” as well. The last 5 or 6 songs is the best songs on there. I’m really in love with ” Love Lost” and ” Holla if you hear me”. But the two songs I will NEVER…. EVER…EVER…EVERRRRR get tired of is ” Neighbors now my name ” and ” Yo Side of the bed” ( which I think is his best song that he has ever record right next to ” Cant help but wait”) I mean that song you can tell that he has really grown as an artist. with his high notes and just the best vocal performance on the album.

With a few songs that could have kept off the album and I was really hoping to hear that song that he did with J.D ( but I didn’t so its ok) I will give this album an 8 out o 10… I think this album is best album so far.

Someone Who Knows Better....

Friday, September 4, 2009 /

I’m wondering why so many ppl in this world are so impressionable… seriously rumors get carried on by simple minded people that believe everything they hear no matter how relevant the source is… knowing Trey personally, I’m shocked and offended that anyone would think to use his name and “gay” in the same sentence. Are you kidding me? Wow, I’m so glad I don’t hang with people who don’t have minds of their own… where are the pics of Trey in these gay club? Where’s the video of this alleged ex BF airing him out? Also just because Trey didnt have kids at 16, shouldn’t equate to people attacking his sexuality. Seriously, I’m a 24 yr old woman and I have no children because I’m focusing on my career and building a foundation for my life before I bring children into the world. Trey is the same age of course and his standards for a family are higher than being someones Baby Daddy… he’s a very talented young man and has a lot going for himself so why would he risk it by popping some random female off… don’t you see all these other celebs going down for Child Support? I really thought this post was supposed to be about “Ready” which is a great album… the review makes sense, I won’t hate on it… the album is definitely a great body of work… if you don’t like sex related songs or relationship related songs then you probably don’t like most of the R&B artists that’s out anyway… these ignorant rumors annoy me… I saw the video and didn’t think anything of it… friends who are secure with their sexuality have no problem hugging each other… these two men are like brothers but again there’s no explaining when it comes to simple minded folks… I’m sure someone is going to make ignorant remarks about my reply but I’m prepared for that… I work in the industry and it annoys me to see people making false and heinous accusations about people I know personally… seriously get a life and focus on your own goals in life if you have any!

@101, I agree with you on who he’s working with . Working with Troy Taylor’s done him inconsistent justice.

I think Trey began catering to teens along with Chris Brown, they were the sort of VA package deal , but Trey was the older one and could talk about sex more upfront as opposed to Chris Brown. Comparing him to Maxwell is out of his ball park. Singers like J.Holiday, Pleasure, Mario, Ne-Yo etc. Are more in his range.

I love Trey, I’m a big supporter so its hard for me to hate on him like so many of yall . But I do recognize where his growth is needed. The CD grows on you trust ! Its good when you hear it , but the more you listen to it, the less songs are skipped.

Does He Do it , One Love and Holla if You Need Me are my favorites of the moment. Especially Does He Do It.

Love Lost or whatever, is shitty . I don’t like it , its boring, it feels like I’m driving through the Carolinas and all I see is road.

He makes that “babies making babies” music. He bites R. Kelly style almost completely. But R. Kelly is a genius because he multi-talented and knows what and who is hot. So the style little man is jocking is his 2002 to 2007 style. Now he’s mad because Kellz switched it up again, but Kellz is still 8 countries away from this young head. Trey’s trying to be a thug look is not very fitting. I like Trey when he’s not copying Kellz and not making high school sex records. Come on, you’re not pulling a female 24+ with LOL Smiley Face. But cute song though. Now R. Kelly can cop them 24+ lesbians. There’s your difference. Step up youngin’. Oh, and MJ Tribute Bet Show, where you stood with Johnny Gill and Tyrese, they made it seem as though they fathered you. Your voice is not strong enough to hold with these cats. Both of whom R. Kelly has written plenty of tracks for. Including MJ. Watch your mouth little stud, you’re not on Kellz level.
