AWARENESS: ‘GET SCHOOLED’
Friday, August 28, 2009
Check out Lil Wayne lending his support to GetSchooled.com, an initiative co-developed by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and Viacom that creates a platform for corporate and community stakeholders to address the challenges facing America’s public schools.
On Sept. 8 at 8 p.m., all of Viacom’s television properties (including BET, MTV, VH1) will join together to simultaneously air “Get Schooled: You Have the Right”, a 30-minute special that highlights education challenges and breakthroughs experienced by three leading figures from the world of entertainment, sports and politics; along with the stories of three of their most trusted professional colleagues.
Other celebs showing support to Get Schooled include Solange, Wyclef, Angela Bassett, Bobb’e J. Thompson, Salt-n-Pepa, DMC and Vivica A. Fox.

In all honesty, why are they using lil wayne? If I was still in grade school without guidance and minimal common and I knew about him and his ways and behavior, I still wouldn’t listen to him.
@#5 yea Dennis Rodman lol…all 3 of them are off the radar.

Lil Wayne went to college ( I don’t know if he graduated or not or if he’s still attending) in TX. I heard he was taking online classes. Anyways, that’s more than some of these other fugly rappers. That’s probably why they used him. Motivate and Educate..

This is a real cool concept, however I’m wondering why they couldn’t compile a better list of celebs to do this, like Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods, Oprah..people that are educated and not always high and drunk.
Plus most the people except Angela,Bobbe, DMC and Wyclef not even that inspiring to youth. I’m just saying

…………….@#4 i’m wondering myself WHY THE HELL is Lil Wayne preaching to kids and grown ups, but mostly kids, about school when this dude is talking about f*cking EVERY girl in the world and says that he cant perform without being high who the hell?? BUT then again when you think about it some of the rebellious kids in school, who dont think before they do, find people like Angela, DMC, and Wyclef boring, so i guess it IS helpful that they put him onboard i guess but honestly i wouldnt have because he just doesn’t represent our fine Black Men well but that’s what i think…………………

Sorry. Until black people revere black intellectuals, scientists, artists, engineers, CEOs, etc as much as they do black celebrities, why in the heck would black children (and their parents) be moved by pleas about public education when you don’t need an education to be a celebrity? Why would young black kids care about getting their diploma or even a college degree when Lil Wayne, Solange, Beyonce, and a whole host of their other idols didn’t get an education, yet still rake in millions? Kerry Washington, Rutina Wesley, Denzel Washington, and a small, but potent number of black actors, have college degrees–why aren’t they in these ads? Now, I don’t consider a high diploma or a college degree to be indicative of good character (look at those Wall Street frauds), but the strong streak of anti-intellectualism within the black community is not going to be destroyed by celebrity endorsement of education. Black children look to celebrities as a way to get rich and famous to escape their so-so life–they don’t see the hard work that goes into being an actor, rapper, designer, etc and neither are they conditioned to persevere and enjoy the journey of learning and obtaining a degree.

BUT LIKE I ALWAYS SAY…AN EDUCATION STARTS @ HOME. IT’S UP TO THE PARENTS TO REINFORCE HOW IMPORTANT IT IS. I GOT MY COLLEGE DEGREE AND WHEN I HAVE CHILDREN I WILL DO ALL I CAN TO HELP THEM FOLLOW IN MY FOOTSTEPS.
SO MANY PARENTS NOWADAYS ARE TOTALLY DISCONNECTED FROM THEIR KIDS. THEY DON’T SIT DOWN AND TALK FACE TO FACE AND INTERACT TO FIND OUT WHAT THEY ARE INTO. THEIR FRIENDS ON FACEBOOK AND TWITTER KNOW MORE ABOUT THEIR LIVES THAN THE PARENTS WHO LIVE IN THE SAME HOUSE.

I think it’s great that he did this but if you are making toxic music at the same time I think that cancels anything he could say out. Music has a much more powerful influence over people than words in my opinion. Words with melody and rythm stick you head much longer than a speech. So it would be nice if he infused some of this positivity in his music, then I would be impressed.

Education and BET don’t go together.
Education and Lil Wayne don’t work either.
This just goes back to the notion that Celebes are not role models. I think this is a very important issue that is only trivialized with the mere presence of someone like Lil Wayne. I think he may have some great intentions sure (and I’m almost certain he was paid) but the reality does not match with how uneducated he is and the types of things he “teaches” youth through his example.
It’s hard to reach most inner city children because of clowns like this spewing all types of ignorance. I mean this man was singing about F-ing girls around the world with his own daughter on stage at the BET Awards.

I`m gonna give Wayne big props for taking the time to do this, people always put down rappers but some rappers are real and are more humble than other celebrities that we think are more classier and educated than rappers.Michael Jordan would never do something like this,he is too egotistical and is picky about what he chooses to endorse.Tiger Woods, despite being worth millions he dosen`t lift a finger to help poor blacks or asians,he is so mentally unbalanced when it comes to race, that he actually thinks that he is a white guy.And Oprah is not going to endorse anything unless it has her name behind it or its in her magazine. So I give Wayne respect for doing something unselfish, and for not being as egotistical and self-centered as some other celebrities.

LOL at this. I really can’t believe they chose him to be a “role model” for kids and education. This is the same guy who smokes WEED which is common with most teens because of the support in music from Rappers, he gets drunk and sleeps around with multiple women, which is also a support for many teens! He is a piece of sh*t! He talks so retarded! Having his pants hang down low, nasty teeth, and from what I can tell, bad hygiene… I don’t care for Obama, but he recently had a speech where he mentioned how black kids should not look up to rappers, actors, and athletes as role models. All of those rappers are hypercrites and it amazes me how so many people could say one thing, and do another. Instead of talking about getting educated, how about you talk about the real issues with teens such as teen pregnancies, drug habits, underaged drinking/DUI, sexually transmitted diseases!
60.

Friday, August 28, 2009 /
Oh and I forgot to talk about Solange as well! She is a horrible role model too. She was very rebellious as a child because she hated being compared to her sister and openingly admitted to smoking weed and getting high off hard drugs, getting drunk, and sleeping around in that Cronic song she had! Not to mention her getting pregnant at 17 and trying to cover it up by getting married. I know people are going to say that was in her past, but she released a statement last year defending that Cronic (whatever name it is) song so obviously she doesn’t see what she did/does is wrong.

It`s not lil wayne`s responsibility to be positive,so he can make the school system better. The President and the government controls our educational system, its their responsiblity to improve education in America, but our former President,George Bush, he neglected Education in the inner cities, and our schools are falling apart. So it`s cool that Weezy is doing this, but ultimately the responsbility for improving our school system lies with the people that we vote into office.

Why you think so many albums get pushed back and delayed, the record executives listen to their artist`s album and they critique it,before it gets released to the public and say,we can`t release this ,this album is too sunny and bright, you gotta go back in the studio and come harder, you gotta come up with something more greazy than that. It`s the record labels that want a artist to be greazy and negative, not the artist.

@61 That is a cop out…. It takes a village.
This is why nothing is ever resolved because we are looking at the government solely for things like this. We all should take part in getting our community better, being that we know the government is not helping then its up to us. In all honesty Obama is not doing much for schools either, most of the funding at black colleges has diminished. Lil Wayne, Jay Z and all brag about what they have and they expect us to purchase their material but not helping inner city schools or education.

Weezy never went to high school how could he be at College LMAO
And PLEASE with this BS that record companies make people like Wayne sell garbage. There are may successful positive rappers who do very well. The point is people have the freedom to sell anything other people want to buy. Wayne is only a reflection of people willing to see someone like him. Wayne is a walking stereotype and White, Blacks and Americans love to see these types of things. The problem is that the African American community often can’t distinguish between entertainment and real life. Whites can listen to Wayne and be amused to a point but they then go on to College and they know that school is important. Where as African American youth aspire to be the next Wayne and most never make it. They live what they hear where as Whites (the main people who support people like Lil Wayne) love the fantasy of it but they usually have parents who make sure they do the right things. For Black youth it’s another story. Bill Gates paid Wayne to do this and he did but the truth is this campaign will not work for the reasons I mentioned. Wayne’s negative influences will win out with the people they want to reach EVERY time. And this will continue to be a problem.
