MOVIE TRAILER: CHRIS ROCK’S ‘GOOD HAIR’

When Chris Rock’s daughter, Lola, came up to him crying and asked, “Daddy, how come I don’t have good hair?” The comic committed himself to search the ends of the earth and the depths of black culture to find out who had put that question into his little girl’s head.

Director Jeff Stilsons camera followed Rock, and the result is the documentary Good Hair. Peep the trailer above and get more info at the official website.

  4. dopest_chick

I know this post will create quite a stir in the CL community let the bitching begin!

  5. Deann

Dangit! I cant view the video, but im sure its going to be interesting. I’m eager to find out where this sterotype stemmed from as well…

  6. la_verite

    LOL. Definitely watching it!

I often wonder about the true side-effects (i.e. dangers) of relaxing creams. I am really interested in finding out. I think if it was confirmed as a real health risk, i’d consider disconituning the procedure…

  7. TLD

That pounds of relaxer was so disgusting.

@5 You know they are coming.

  8. JstBReal

Dang Im watching this lol. I wonder will there ever be a weave shortage?

  9. afrobella82

I can’t wait to see this!

  10. QUEEN

THANK YOU CHRIS!!! omg… i’m so excited to see this… saw it on oprah when he talked about it!!! still waiting patiently!!! i’m a woman that LOOOOOOOOVES and appreciates my nappy roots… i rock a fro as often as i can and have found that i actually get more compliments when i have a fro then with any other hairstyle… LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOOOOOOOOOOOOVE the natural looks!!! NAPPY IS HAIR IS GOOD HAIR!!!

  11. nameless

I feel you, Lola. I despise my mother for marrying a black man because my hair is like a bush and my brother’s hair is like carpet. Our nappy asses will probably never find mates.

  12. Greased

    LMBAO!!!! LAY AWAY THE WEAVE…

  13. why

    black women are a joke!

  14. Kyla

    @ 13 NAMELESS – what???

  15. Shaay

I been dedicated to this specific topic for a long time. I am so ready to see this, cant wait !!

  16. why

@ NAMELESS…naw you will never find mates because you hate yourself. dumb broad!

  17. Aaliyah M.

Nameless, you are a sad individual if you are relying on your hair to get/lose/allow you to never find a mate.

However, it is sad that African American’s hate themselves so much, on top of all the insecurities we have to deal with with just being human beings. It is desperately sad! My own niece doesn’t like that she is brown skin and despises the sun when she gets a tan, because when she was a baby she was lighter skin and now she is brown – and beautiful non-the-less!

We have to pray for ourselves.

  18. Kendra

I didn’t know relaxer was this harmful. Kinda glad I went natural. This movie looks good I hope it comes to st louis

  20. Mr. West Coast!

As a guy I feel some of the pressure to have so called “good hair” is something that black women put on themselves. To me Tamron Hall (MSNBC) and her short/real hair is as beautiful as Selma Hayek or anyone else. I guess it’s all about just loving yourself for who God made you. Now someone should do a movie called “Good Feet” cause that’s what matters to me most… LOL!

  21. Kendra

And I can’t believe you can do a layaway weave!

  22. MJ

heard about this on Oprah a while back. I thought it was a myth. Cool Beans!

  23. la_verite

@13…so I’m guessing you are biracial? Your outlook is pretty sad…self-hatred is never a good look.

You can always relax it if you really prefer it straight.

  24. Irides

Can’t wait to see this. I made a personal decision at 14 to stop relaxing my hair. Anything that leaves scabs on your scalp can’t be good for you.

  25. blackandmild

This would have been a great movie if it focused on all the money black women spend outside of their community on black hair care products supporting Asian owners who could care less about them. But I understand, this is Chris Rock . So why not laugh at the situation? Black people have a long way to go.

  26. The Truth

So fascinating. What a great Concept. We need to get better black people!

  27. one_systa

looks hilarious with a good underlying msg .. wonder how his young child learned that term .. i have a 6-yr old who has no idea what that ignorant term ‘good hair’ is supposed to be .. she absolutely loves her brown skin and natural hair b/c we constantly affirm her beauty (and intelligence and compassion) … chris should check the msgs his child is receiving from family, school and media .. and turn off all that damn barbie, hannah mantana, cinderella, icarly bullshit!!

  28. Are you serious?

I’m just gonna assume that “NAMELESS” said what she did for shock value/controversy purposes. I have very thick, coarse hair but I relax it… not because I care how people see it but because its easier to manage relaxed hair than natural hair in my opinion. My hair’s been natural (no relaxer) and I spent more time maintaining it than I do my relaxed hair. Cause trust me, there is nothing like nappy, sun-dried natural hair… it looks awful guys

  29. Ladyssolady

Cannot wait to see this! I’ve seen previews, and saw little girls in the salon getting relaxers. I’m a teacher, and it’s ridiculous to see so many little girls, as young as 5, with a non-existent hairline and thinned out hair. So sad. Little girls should keep their hair braided or just wear it out. If they want to do something ‘fancy’, flat iron it. People need to accept their hair textures, as there are many, and work w/them. I’ve never had hair issues, but have many friends that have. Women need to learn what works for them. Research products and methods, and your life will be much easier. I will say if you do apply any kind of chemical, relaxer or color, get it professinally done. So much damage is done when its done at home. Leave it to the professionals!

  30. Kyla

@ #22 MR. WEST COAST! – lool @ good feet.

  31. MOCHA NOCHA

THIS SEEMS INTERESTING, I CANT WAIT

  32. Focused1

    Looks interesting. I’ll watch it.

  33. MRB

LMFAO @ WORK!! MUST SEE DIS MOVIE!!!!!!

  34. JstBReal

#13 Im guessing you’re biracial and from another country, but your hair doesnt matter if you have a strong personality behind your appearance. You and your bro need to love yourself b4 you can love anybody else.

  35. Tamika's Mustache

Nameless- I commend you for remaining “nameless”…Your isn’t ugly…just your attitude. I will see this movie-on bootleg- (only because the money made by actors should go to our military members, teachers, doctors) It’s true. Black women have made alot of people rich with perms and weave. Our natural hair is beautiful…it’s just that in this day and age it’s more convenient to wear it straighter. My daughter is half hispanic and I am going to relax her hair after 9 years…only because she can do it herself. Hair shouldn’t define someones beauty. Black hair is beautiful…NOT nappy…we can braid it, ‘fro it, etc…It’s just that now no one has time for such unique hair…and the media doesn’t embrace real black beauty…

  36. HearFaithSinG

I have been waiting for this topic to be addressed in a movie.

    I honestly can’t wait to see it….

wish i had the strength to let my weaves go…..still workin on it lol :)

  37. igetzminez

    looks hilarious!!!

  38. *«SOLiD RiCH GiRL»*

First off his girls are beautiful black little girls and they have good hair.Black people don’t get lice and we naturally have strong healthy GOOD HAIR.All straight hair especailly bone straight is NOT GOOD HAIR.Chris Rock is hilarious but the film will be a must see because this topic is so serious and important to the black community.

  39. okay

natural for the past 3 years and loving it

  40. afrobella82

@ #38- let it go, you won’t regret it!!

I haven’t had a relaxer since April 07 and I love my big beautiful fro. I wish I had done it sooner.

  41. Pretty as a...

i left the crack alone years back. i’ve been clean n free for over 4 years, luvs my afro baby, and love to hear women complainin bout humidity and rain and sweatin when it come to keepin their hair lookin relaxed and “right”. i just laugh to myself and keep it movin. and i get SO much respect and compliment. i can’t WAIT to see this movie. and it’s NIAAAAA!! luv her! i want all those stars on the movies to take that mess out their head so we can so what’s really real….yeah like that’ll happen HA!

  42. Mikki

Thank God for this, I cannot wit to see it. Lord know’s we need to be free of that creamy crack mess! Love it, go Chris!!!

  43. Its about Got dang time

I have been waiting forever for some one black in Hollywood to address this. Thank you Chris Rock even though your wife looks mixed and has that straight hair too. Thank ya Thank ya Thank ya.

Maybe next they will address on camera some black celebrity men Hollywood why they have to always have a light, bright damn near white wife. They will date anyone, but to wife a chick they got to have the flaxen long hair…ALL OF THEM

By the way I have always hated the term “GOOD HAIR” its so wrong on so many levels.

  44. whitney williams

I GOT PRETTY LONG HAIR I DON’T NEED WEAVE

  45. neon

yeah i stopped relaxing my hair lol. i didn’t have any issues with my hair- i took care of it so it was at my shoulder blades and healthy but i started getting envious of the natural beauties that i would see. plus i wanted a change and wondered if my hair could be even healthier if i stopped relaxing it. happy with my decision. i don’t have an issue with relaxers though but i believe that you need to be of a certain age and should take great care of your hair. make sure you’re hair is moisturized (grease is not a moisturizer) and deep conditioned regularly. and please people don’t perm a young child’s hair. that is soo sad to me. my mom made me wait. i think high school or older is a good time but a 9 year old shouldn’t have permed hair. most importantly weigh your options b4 you make such a big decision

  46. manageability

It’s not about looking white, it’s about manageability for me….I did the fro and the dreads, but I like my hair better straight. It takes less time out of my day.

  47. neon

forgot to add that i hope chris treats this subject well b/c there’s a lot of ignorance about black women’s hair (i.e. black women can’t have long hair, they all wear weaves). i would hate for that ignorance to continue while ppl just treat the movie as a straight comedy

  48. manageability

If it hurts when you comb it, why should you have to deal with that. Thank you madam cj walker!!!

  49. JUDAH

If Chris Rock wanted to know why his daughter was asking about “good hair” and “bad hair”, he should’ve just went straight to his wife, but then the movie wouldn’t have lasted as long and he would’ve ended up in divorce court. The flick should really be called “Good Hair a.k.a. The Black Woman is the Biggest NutJob on planet Earth after the White Man in a Photo Finish” volume 1 of a 300 volume series. Who the hell else would’ve put that thought into his daughter’s head other than the nearest black woman a.k.a. his wife? Give me a break. These black women have been running with that good hair/bad hair nonsense for generations. They teach it to their children, both girls and boys, and then complain when a black man only wants to date a woman with relaxed hair smdh. Flick looks good anyway though.

  50. manageability

…And why doesn’t he address all of those black men he interviewed preferring light skinned long haired women. I mean come on, what are black women supposed to do if black men keep rejecting ‘natural’ haired sisters?!!!

  51. manageability

Another movie blaming the black woman

  52. Its about Got dang time

By the way “Namleless, Temikas Mustach and Are you serious” need to grow up and get a life.

  53. manageability

Typical ‘black hair’ is so tightly curled that it is often hard to comb and manage…This is the reason many black women get relaxers…Now I don’t condone weave, because You should be able to wear your real hair.

  54. frenchiebaby

Stop perming my entire head years ago. The only thing that I can say is that I still perm around my edges maybe once a year…BUT THATS IT!!! I am sooo much in love with my natural hair. Even though at times it can turn into a curly , stiff, tanlged mess. I get compliments on my hair all the time because its wavy and curly, but I hate hearing ” YOU GOT GOOD HAIR!!!” No I have HEALTHY HAIR!!! There is a difference. If you dont dammage your hair with all these chemicals, and ghetto hairstyles that weaken the strand then you could have HEALTHY HAIR too. Cant wait to see this!!!

  55. manageability

My nappy hurts when I comb it….that’s why I have a relaxer

  56. manageability

    Thank you madam cj walker

  57. YO YO MENDEZ!!!! idely

my dark skinned goddess came home with a hair cut yesday. all off, not as close as Amber but im happy for her, she beautiful and like most black females, yearrs of relaxers ruined herl hair. my mom still uses her hot comb. i have locks but my hair a lil wavy.

ppl say stupid ish to me all the time such as “you got some good hair, why would you put dred locks in?” i bless them and keep it moving.

  58. YO YO MENDEZ!!!! idely

i think relaxers can mess with someones mind. ther are som pretty batty women out ther. i wish i cud be soley blamed on hair chemicals but im not naive so i know ther are plenty factors that make ppl crazy.
