MOVIE TRAILER: CHRIS ROCK’S ‘GOOD HAIR’
Monday, August 3, 2009
When Chris Rock’s daughter, Lola, came up to him crying and asked, “Daddy, how come I don’t have good hair?” The comic committed himself to search the ends of the earth and the depths of black culture to find out who had put that question into his little girl’s head.
Director Jeff Stilsons camera followed Rock, and the result is the documentary Good Hair. Peep the trailer above and get more info at the official website.

I often wonder about the true side-effects (i.e. dangers) of relaxing creams. I am really interested in finding out. I think if it was confirmed as a real health risk, i’d consider disconituning the procedure…

Nameless, you are a sad individual if you are relying on your hair to get/lose/allow you to never find a mate.
However, it is sad that African American’s hate themselves so much, on top of all the insecurities we have to deal with with just being human beings. It is desperately sad! My own niece doesn’t like that she is brown skin and despises the sun when she gets a tan, because when she was a baby she was lighter skin and now she is brown - and beautiful non-the-less!
We have to pray for ourselves.

Monday, August 3, 2009 /
As a guy I feel some of the pressure to have so called “good hair” is something that black women put on themselves. To me Tamron Hall (MSNBC) and her short/real hair is as beautiful as Selma Hayek or anyone else. I guess it’s all about just loving yourself for who God made you. Now someone should do a movie called “Good Feet” cause that’s what matters to me most… LOL!

This would have been a great movie if it focused on all the money black women spend outside of their community on black hair care products supporting Asian owners who could care less about them. But I understand, this is Chris Rock . So why not laugh at the situation? Black people have a long way to go.

I’m just gonna assume that “NAMELESS” said what she did for shock value/controversy purposes. I have very thick, coarse hair but I relax it… not because I care how people see it but because its easier to manage relaxed hair than natural hair in my opinion. My hair’s been natural (no relaxer) and I spent more time maintaining it than I do my relaxed hair. Cause trust me, there is nothing like nappy, sun-dried natural hair… it looks awful guys

Cannot wait to see this! I’ve seen previews, and saw little girls in the salon getting relaxers. I’m a teacher, and it’s ridiculous to see so many little girls, as young as 5, with a non-existent hairline and thinned out hair. So sad. Little girls should keep their hair braided or just wear it out. If they want to do something ‘fancy’, flat iron it. People need to accept their hair textures, as there are many, and work w/them. I’ve never had hair issues, but have many friends that have. Women need to learn what works for them. Research products and methods, and your life will be much easier. I will say if you do apply any kind of chemical, relaxer or color, get it professinally done. So much damage is done when its done at home. Leave it to the professionals!

Nameless- I commend you for remaining “nameless”…Your isn’t ugly…just your attitude. I will see this movie-on bootleg- (only because the money made by actors should go to our military members, teachers, doctors) It’s true. Black women have made alot of people rich with perms and weave. Our natural hair is beautiful…it’s just that in this day and age it’s more convenient to wear it straighter. My daughter is half hispanic and I am going to relax her hair after 9 years…only because she can do it herself. Hair shouldn’t define someones beauty. Black hair is beautiful…NOT nappy…we can braid it, ‘fro it, etc…It’s just that now no one has time for such unique hair…and the media doesn’t embrace real black beauty…

yeah i stopped relaxing my hair lol. i didn’t have any issues with my hair- i took care of it so it was at my shoulder blades and healthy but i started getting envious of the natural beauties that i would see. plus i wanted a change and wondered if my hair could be even healthier if i stopped relaxing it. happy with my decision. i don’t have an issue with relaxers though but i believe that you need to be of a certain age and should take great care of your hair. make sure you’re hair is moisturized (grease is not a moisturizer) and deep conditioned regularly. and please people don’t perm a young child’s hair. that is soo sad to me. my mom made me wait. i think high school or older is a good time but a 9 year old shouldn’t have permed hair. most importantly weigh your options b4 you make such a big decision

If Chris Rock wanted to know why his daughter was asking about “good hair” and “bad hair”, he should’ve just went straight to his wife, but then the movie wouldn’t have lasted as long and he would’ve ended up in divorce court. The flick should really be called “Good Hair a.k.a. The Black Woman is the Biggest NutJob on planet Earth after the White Man in a Photo Finish” volume 1 of a 300 volume series. Who the hell else would’ve put that thought into his daughter’s head other than the nearest black woman a.k.a. his wife? Give me a break. These black women have been running with that good hair/bad hair nonsense for generations. They teach it to their children, both girls and boys, and then complain when a black man only wants to date a woman with relaxed hair smdh. Flick looks good anyway though.

Even though at times it can turn into a curly , stiff, tanlged mess. I get compliments on my hair all the time because its wavy and curly, but I hate hearing ” YOU GOT GOOD HAIR!!!” No I have HEALTHY HAIR!!! There is a difference. Relaxed hair, non-relaxed hair. It just depends on the individual. It’s all about what you like and what works for you. I don’t believe anyone has good hair. I don’t care what your background is. Hair is hair. If we all walked around bald-headed then we wouldn’t be having this discussion. The one’s who believe that there really is a such thing as good hair obviously don’t like something about themselves.

This looks good! I’ve never used the term “good hair” and have had to correct my mother several times when she says it (side eye) and I’ve been permed and natural (not easy locks either…or w/wavy, curly or silky hair, my hair is genuinely nappy and I had to do it every day) and while I’m not as into our hair and what is means and symbolizes as I was in my college years-I’m sure this doc will do some good. I wonder if he’s going to hit on Erykah and Jills natural textured wigs and weaves…when I saw the Erykah’s faux locks I was at such a loss for words but the older I get the more I’m like to each their own…after all it’s just hair.

I have always been told that I have “good hair”. It’s not tightly curled like my little sister’s hair which would be considered “bad hair” to some people. But I am actually jealous of her texture, as she can do afros, and natural twists because it is so thick.
I have come to learn that everyone can have good hair. It is a matter of taking good care of it, and taking good care of your body, too.

Black hair is the most unique in the world and I’m proud as hell of it. I’m natural and I rock it. Its perfectly beautiful, bouncy, long and groomed. I have micro locs. I’m embarrassed to see women wear weaves. They look fake and hot and its damaging their natural hair so badly!!! I don’t have friends that wear weaves because I think they’re even pretentious! Even the creamy crack (perm) will take out your hair faster than cutting it. Look at Naomi Campbell’s hairline….that is the future. Embrace your hair that grows abundantly. Its not meant to be combed unless its kept short or you have a looser curl pattern or else it will break off. Our hair is sooo delicate. Please treat your hair like fine lace cause that’s what it is!! My man can run his hands through my hair baby!

I cut all my hair off 2 yrs ago I thought that term was only use for women I didnt know it applied to men too.

I love how people defend their decision to relax their hair with, “it’s just easier to maintain.” People with relaxed hair have to do the most outlandish shyt to keep it up. You can’t walk in the rain, you can’t get it wet in the shower, you have to go every six to eight weeks to retouch it, otherwise it will break off, that followed with typical maintenance like combing it every day, putting it in roller sets at night, etc etc.
One lady felt the need to point out that her daughter was half Hispanic (as if Hispanic was a race–she really wanted to go in a round about way of pointing out her daughter’s hair is different), and then tell you she’s going to put a relaxer in it so the little girl can do it herself. That little girl can learn to do her own natural hair, equally as well.
People will saying anything to continue their addiction.
86.
Good Hair?!?
Monday, August 3, 2009 /
This is a very interesting topic. What is so called good hair? who defines it? I mean I have curly hair and people always say you got that good hair. My immediate response is my hair is just hair. No better that anyone elses just a different grade. We must be proud of who we are and not try so hard to emulate others hair style. With that in mibd though perceptiopn is everything so I think keeping yourself up is critical to success, but not at the expense of stressing about whether your hair is good.

If it hurts to comb your natural hair, you are using the wrong technique and products.
Kinky, nappy hair is the most unique attribute on the planet Why would you change it?
From my research in the business of Black hair care our nappy hair textures were not meant to be bombed daily. The hair styles that work best for us are sculpted (afros and cuts) or placed in protected styles ( braids and locs). These style when done correctly allow our hair to achieve it’s maximum length possible.
There are many good quality natural products to assist you with caring for your hair. This generation has lost the skills to style their natural tresses.
I have been in the natural hair care business for years and will not promote my product line here. I will say after attending several professional hair care shows for relaxed hair…the ingredients in those products are mostly synthetic and extremely cheap. Most manufactures only add tiny amounts natural products and use de-greasers in their shampoos, petrolatum or an extremely cheap oil for their formula. They often top off these synthetics with minute natural ingredients.
I have worn my hair natural for years. The only time I’ve had problems with breakage is when I wore a relaxer. I’ve never had any problems with attracting the opposite sex.
African features are strong and look best with natural textured hair. Straight hair pulls the face down and accentuates wrinkles.
Look at all of the classic African female beauty art pieces. Straight hair does not complement our bone structure, lips, eyes and skin tones.

You speak the truth and nothing but. Black women teach there kids the Good hair/ Bad hair mess. When they see a Black Women with so call good hair they envy it to the point of touching and pulling the person hair. They tease, they do the Oh is that your real hair thing.
And I say Black Women do your own thing. To all the preachy Natural hair wearing sisters you shouldn’t tell other women what to do with thereself. Black Women are always in someone else area mind yours.
Black Women Stop opressing yourself. Hair is just Hair Lmao Is it that serious crying about perms and what not. So What!
Why would all Black Women want to look the same always we should do this or that. Damn follow your own trend. That why I love Kelis some of you may not cause your in your little Box that you wont step out of and tend to want to bring other people in.

chris rock isnt saying anything new. but i will go see it to see his approach on the subject. i really hope he asks significant questions especially to these celebs who are highlighted why do they continue to wear perms and weaves if they know the harms and if they are in the media and seen as examples of black women and would they ever go back natural.
im not sure but i did see him speaking to that ignorant asian man but i hope he addresses this enormous issue with the asian market and black hair. how they see blk women as dumb and continue to exploit and shut down the black owned hair businesses.
ya’ll think that oh this asian dude is nice and he gives me discounts and gets the good hair products when he is laughing at you. black females need to stop frequenting these asian owned stores.
i also hope he shows where the hair comes from in china and india. THE DAMN GArBAGE AND LANDFILLS!! lets see if chris rocks gets real gritty. but even if he doesn’t ::sigh:: i guess this is a start. i wonder if he also tells us what he answered his daughter and gives her the chance to state her opinion and how daddy/mommy changed her mind by educating her and making her appreciate beautiful.

As the comedian…I forget his name said in Chris Rock”s movie says…”If you’re nappy Whites anint happy.”
People straighten their hair back in the day to appear more like white people. wearing your hair straight affected your ability to work and feed your family.
“Good hair” is a left over from slavery days….because it meant you had something white folks blood in you.
Most recently there has been a push in the industry to outlaw or severely restrict natural hair care providers. Why because the industry ran by mostly Asians, and regulated by whites are making huge amounts of money (billions)off of women that relax their hair. None of this money ever returns to the Black community….not even in tithes.
Natural hair care is a largely Black owned business.
So yes their is a huge push to keep Black women addicted to the “creamy crack.”

you know I wonder why this is being focused just on blacks bc whites and hispanics get perms and weaves too. i friends that are dominican, rican, trini/indian, jewish and sicilian italian specificially that have coily big hair and get perms and dye their hair blonde to appear more european and “white”- whatever that means. i kno a dominican who doesnt even say she is dominican but passes for white with blonde hair and a perm but her accent is strong as hell.

Just look at how much money is building up India….have you ever seen a poor Indian or Asians in general. In my neighbor hood their kids drive Mercedes and BMW and our kids can’t get a job at McDonalds.
I have Asian friends folks….but next time you elect to put a weave or relax your hair….you need to see the multi million dollar homes and bad ass cars folks are driving….some because of our love affair with straight hair.
Next time your schools run out of text books, or Lakeesha can’t get decent housing or a job….think about were your money is going.

As a human being, I love myself, I honestly wouldn’t trade myself in 4 the world.
However, when it comes 2 the outside………….I’m sorry, but I just can’t except what I
see, when I look in the mirror. I’m having severe difficulties excepting my brown skin,
and even more difficulties excepting my nappy hair, I’m sorry, but I can’t help it…..
and what makes these internal feelings even more embarussing, is the fact that after all these years, I’m still having these type of insecurities at the age of 28.
I really really wish that I could stop tripping about this bullcrap, but I just can’t seem 2 stop. How is it not suppose 2 bother me, when all I ever hear & all I ever see all day, every day is light & bright with long curly hair, constantly being put on a pedestal…………how am I suppose 2 feel, when everytime I’m with my two lightskinned friends, I’m constantly being overlooked & ignored, while they’re constantly being stared & gawked at, like they’re f*ckin “jesus christ.”
Not 2 mention the fact that this has been happening since we were little girls………
I mean, it’s litterally gotten 2 the point were I would call those guys their fans.
everytime I hear a male driver honk his horn, I will look at my pretty lightskin friends, and say “THERE GOES 1 OF YOUR FANS,”………………..
…………with a fake smile on my face…………..I,ve been doing that 4 years, & quite frankly, I’m sick of it.

Some of you seriously need to STOP!
It’s a CHOICE!!!!!! If a person wants to wear her hair relaxed and weaved then so what. Stop knocking people just because they’re not “natural”. Just like you want a person to accept your naturalness then why can’t you accept people who are not?
And yes relaxing the hair does make it more manageable. At least in my case it does. I have very thick hair especially my roots so yes it is necessary to relax it. I just wait at least 8 weeks between relaxing and my hair is absolutely fine. If I wanted to do the kikny twists, micro braids and ect then I would. But I CHOOSE not to. Just cut the holier than thou bullcrap and learn to accept other peoples choices.

I am so insecure about my feet, and my everyone always compliment me on how pretty my toes are.. My husband even suck them on occassion.. I still think they are the ugliest Toes on the planet.. No one is perfect and no one is completely happy with themselves
I’m black and i have long hair that touch my breast.. i hate my hair but my husband loves my hair so i can’t cut it.. I would save so much money if I had just shave everything off like amber rose,, but he won’t let me.. I love him so i will keep the hair.. even know it cost me $65 every 2 weeks to wash and $150 to get a perm every 3 months.. I love him i’ll keep the hair, but i hate it
Do you really think this movie is gonna stop people from buying hair and putting perm? Hell to the NOOOO…. and Tamron hall has a perm, a lot of white people, latina, and chinese wear extension not just black people..
theres no scientific fidings that says perm will harm your brain, it won’t even harm a baby while you’re pregnant.. people will continue to perm their hair and buy weaves.. chris needs to teach his daugther to love herself and when she grows up she will make the decision wether she wants a perm and weave or not.. which i’m pretty sure she will

Its not necessary to relax thick roots. You do it because you want straight hair.
Relaxed hair is not more manageable. You’re just too lazy.
Bald patches, tension alopecia, breakage- more prevalent amongst black women than any other race.
Make your choice and stick with it- but please stop lying to yourself. At least some girls have the guts to admit, relaxed hair is more acceptable in white America, this is why they do it.

some of these comments are just giving me a headache. good lord! anyway, i’m def gonna see this movie. only thing i hope is that they address this issue from every angle possible. i did notice the string of weave wearing celebs in the preview…and i really hope that they all state why they wear a weave. whether it be because of a grueling work schedule or their own pleasure. nothing wrong with wearing one. i just want them to bust down a few myths with their own personal explanations. i also hope chris balances these women out with other women who have their own long gorgeous hair that grows from their scalps, women who are natural, women who have short hair and love it, etc. i just need to see all angles so that this film can answer some serious questions. also, is it just me or am i the only one who has an issue with ice t being interviewed? like wtf? i need for him to not comment on anything pertaining to black women and beauty when he’s married to an artificially inflated white woman who is doing her damndest to copy the way some of us black women look. like seriously. i hope that in the movie, they interview some black men who really love black women and can give some non-biased commentary. smh. anyway, at the end of the day, it’s just hair folks! i have an appreciation for all hair types and lengths. love yourselves! we are more than our hair!

im sixteen years old and had my hair relaxed at seven. i live in a predominantly white area. and state. i regretted gettin my hair relaxed soon soon soon after that! and got my braids back! i rocked braids till high school. and then got my hair relaxed cause id been rockin the braids for much too long. ive rocked everything from weave.. to just relaxed hair without tracks or weave, braids, and yes even the fro! natural baby! haha i like to try everything. and i dont think that having relaxed hair makes me look “better” makes me look like i have “good hair” ive always loved my hair in whatever condition it was (not so much when i was seven) lol. and i could care less whether white ppl like my hair or not. but anyways.. black women and black parents in general need to step up and reassure their kids that they are beautiful just the way they are. i was reminded of that continuously on a daily basis as a child and still today. i think that helped a lot in my opinion about my hair. and just me as a person! im confident and i think black people are ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL! much love ya’ll

i knew i couldn’t possibly be the only one trippin about that! so thank you!
also, about these asian beauty supply stores. this is something i’ve had an issue with for a long time. idk what everyone else’s experiences are but where i live, they literally watch you like a hawk and follow you around the entire store. i got so tired of it, that i had to go off on the person following me. i stopped going to those beauty supply stores altogether. that experience taught me then and there that some (i won’t say all) of these asian owned stores not only want your money but they also want to strip you of your DIGNITY! how dare you follow ME around as if i’m a thief….when if it wasn’t for ME, you wouldn’t even have a damn business!!!! get the heck outta here. some of these store owners better recognize that if it wasn’t for us, they wouldn’t be eatin. with a recession and all, i have yet to see ONE beauty supply store close it’s doors. what does that tell ya’ll? in fact, i’ve seen some open. all i want to say is, if you are being wrongly treated in any of these stores, STOP GOING!! black owned supply stores seem to be few and far between, but go that extra mile to find one. don’t EVER spend your money at any place that is not appreciative of your business and respectful of you. this brings up an even better question though:
WHERE ARE ALL THE BLACK OWNED BEAUTY SUPPLY STORES?

We all know where the term good hair/bad hair comes from. Its sad that its 2009 and people are still trapped. IT IS WHAT IT IS…. black hair has a natural kinky texture, so what!? Embrace your naps or perm your scalp… whatever you do just don’t forget who you are and where WE came from. Point Blank

Monday, August 3, 2009 /
I don’t have “black” hair but if I did I would probably put relaxer in it. I don’t see what the big deal is - I have a little bit of “black” in me and my black cousins that are around my age all relax their hair NOT BECAUSE THEY WANT TO LOOK WHITE but they like the way it looks and it’s easier to manage when it’s “silkier” they say. Just because you’re black doesn’t mean you should go natural to express that you’re black and proud.
Relaxing your hair doesn’t mean you want to look white and it has nothing to do with slavery or anything like that.
Weave is another thing though - hate when people wear weaves, especially long weaves. If you’re going to get a weave at least make it look natural. Weave down to your bum does not look natural. I also think coloured weaves should be like banned, they look horrible. Why would you want to walk around with blue, yellow, red, pink, and blonde on your headtop?
And I don’t know where you ladies are from but all the hair supply stores I’ve seen are all owned by black people.

MY ROLE
Monday, August 3, 2009 /
@ 80
It was actually the year of 1877 when relaxers for African Americans was created. Get it right beloved. The inventor was Garrett A. Morgan…a black man (if you can believe it). He also invented the respiratory protective hood.
Anyway…
As far the natural hair, relaxing and weaves…TO EACH ITS OWN. Everyone please do not judge and assume things about others when you A) Do not personally know women on this blog or B) Assume that a female has self-esteem issues just because you have/had some in the present or past or know someone who has. Yes – our society does affect they way we look at ourselves but at the same time does not give us the right to kill each other with words. I don’t care if you “keep it real” or not. You are just being nasty to each which is not lady like at all.
If you wear your hair natural…good for you. Instead of criticizing others for their choice, encourage them to consider the natural hairstyle. Give tips to how to properly comb and manage their hair based on texture and length. And testify about how much you’re hair has improved while being natural.
If you wear a perm or wear…kudos to you too. BUT don’t get mad at people who choose not to. If you have issues with you’re, find a solution. If not keep it moving. Why would you care about what a stranger thinks anyway? If not like they got g a heaven a hell to put you in. LOL!
Let’s just agree to disagree with out being harsh. But for real. If Chris did his job as a father, his daughter wouldn’t even be speaking like she is.

There was a day when I decided to wear a fro in highschool & one of my teachers a white female, actually complemented me on my hair & she never did that when I wore perms, weaves, micros ect. People of other races can appreciate the beauty in our diversity, so why can’t we? Why do we have to conform & adhere to this european standard of beauty? that wasn’t created by us but still freely choose to perpetuate it. My hair grows faster, is thicker & more volumunous in it’s natural state; relaxers just make the hair limp, flat, thin, & more susceptible to damage & breakage. & the reason why black women cling to this myth that ‘black hair is more manageble with a relaxer’ is because there aren’t alot of mainstream hair care products that cater to african american hair types & think that a chemical relaxer is their only option. I mean honestly it really is to each his own or her own what they choose to do to their hair but it speaks volumes when black women are the only racial group of women that have to chemically alter their hair texture & even go as far as paying for hair that comes from another race & sometimes even an animal to put on their head. It’s a testament to the lack of pride that we have.

Now you know good and damn well Im going to go see this. Im extremely fascinated and would love to hear all the different P.O.V.’s that will be expressed in this movie. I stopped wearing a relaxer about 4 and a half years ago. Im extremely happy with my hair. I got a beautiful healthy thick big ass afro. You dont know how in love I am with it. Its marvelous. Unlike some people, I know how to manage my natural hair and how to keep it shiny, soft and healthy. Plus, I dont have to spend a ton of money to relax it and I never ever got to worry about getting my hair wet. Hallejehuh!!! God knows Im a water baby, so me being natural has left me without all the worries of getting my hair wet if it were relaxed.
@ Tiara
Dont nobody give a damn if you dont want to hear all the testimonies about black women finally being freed from damaging harsh ass chemicals. Who the HELL is you??? No seriously??? Its beautiful to see sistas like myself finally embracing their natural god-given hair and appreciating it for what it is. If you relax it fine, if you dont, well baby girl fabulous. What you need to do is stop hating. I have watch so many young black girls get teased for their ‘NAPPY” hair and how much better other black girls thought they were because they put some chemicals in it to get it “STRAIGHT AND SILKY “. F**k that. Im loving the natural hair testimonies. If you dont like it, you can kiss it.

It is very sad that we as black women feel the way we do about our hair. We look at these images of beauty and they do not match what we have growing from our head. It has become such a part of out culture that we forget that by perming and putting weave we are truly not embracing our blackness as God created. Our hair is so unique no other race has hair like ours it is a beautiful crown on top or our heads. I wish we could go back to the 70’s when people would be proud to rock a fro. People have all kinds of reasons that the tell them self why they don’t wear their hair natural but at the end of the day comes down to looking in the mirror and not liking what they see and we need to ask why we don’t like what we see.

I would say also say just be you…but the reality is self hatred has gotten worse. Celebrities pictured on this cite have straight weaves and have had their noses thinned.
The straight hair industry love it when Black women relax…not perm their hair because of the high maintenance this style requires.
When a sister wears a ton of other folks hair, or dogs out nappy hair, or uses terms that indicate nappy hair is bad or talks about good hair….that person has a case of self hatred plain and simple.
How can anyone say what GOD gave them naturally is bad, ugly, or unmanageable. Or you critiquing his ability to know what traits look best on Black people.

White women are not questioned about not loving their white pale skin when they are going to the tanning bed, buying suntan lotions, etc. If a Black woman wants to get a weave, relaxer, or wear an afro, so what? Black people judge each other and hate on one another so much, when we should be uplifting each other. Why is hair such an issue for us?

the asians own big houses and vehicles, while many of us are busting our asses to make ends meet. Why?
Because silly black women go to their shops to glue on fake nails, buy animal/human hair to put on their heads, and by products full of mineral oil and a bunch of other chemicals.
Then people sit and wonder why the black community cannot progress like the other races. smh very sad indeed.
what do asians know about black hair care?
what do dominicans know about black hair care?
you all really cant think of anything better to do with your money???
how sad is that when your man cant even fully enjoy making love to because you are worried about your weave getting messed up. lmao
do you all know that little girls in india, russia, poland, etc. cry every day because their parents take them to get their hair chopped off so they can get money to feed their families???? and how much do you think they are paid for their long hair??? almost nothing!!!!
i hope when you all are rocking ur weaves you keep in mind there is a little girl somewhere walking around BALD, just so you can look good.

White women are criticized for a variety of things. It not attractive for white women to have curly /frizzy hair, big lips and butts were looked down upon until recently, and tanned skin was considered working class attributes.
White American women were not slaves so black physical characteristics were looked down upon. What a change in such a short time.

You’re right; both black and white women wear weaves, especially celebrities. It’s just that when people see a black woman wearing a weave or wig, they think it’s because she can’t grow her own hair. I’ve seen pictures of Tyra Banks and Beyonce when they were little and they had a head full of hair. I wouldn’t be surprised if Meagan Good and Lauren London could grow their hair long too. The fact is, they are celebrities and need their hair done at all times for the camera. However, all that dying, frying, and blow drying can cause great damage to their real hair, so they use weaves and wigs to prevent some of the damage from occurring. The same goes for white celebrity women. Just the other day, I saw the white woman from the Real Housewives talking about buying a wig b/c her hair was falling out. This is also why I laugh when people talk bad about Michelle Obama letting Sasha and Maliah go out in public with their hair braided or pulled up or not permed. It’s because of that they still have long, thick, and healthy hair. Unless, everybody wants to see two bald headed children running around on the White House lawn!

I’m glad this was brought up! It’s not nesscecarily an issue because in the black community there are much bigger things to worry about but it still needs to be addressed. I sopose we are always going fault the industries as reprehensible for this matter.
The problem goes back to the insecurities and pressures on not just black women but women in general. We tend to aspire to the very unrealistic images portrayed in the magazines and on advertisments so it almost seems very normal to us. I mean, when recently have you seen the beyonces or the Nia Longs rock natural or nappy hair. Even these celebritties feel the sense of pressure because aesthetically, natural isn’t approved of in the industry. As much as we try to encourage and embrace natural beauty, unfortunately,it just isn’t considered beautiful as silicone, weaves and make-up. We’re in a very harsh industry. Before some artists started out, they were told to change their hair or other features. For example, after Estelle was signed, her record company insisted that she straightened her teeth as apart of the very the very perfect image, they were trying to create . Estelle said they were a huge part of her image and orignality but no sooner, her record company had them straightened. Aesthetics has become a huge part of artists cause if you ain’t got the look, then it’s difficult to have a future in the industry and essentially make the money. I’m glad India Arie is still keeping it real
I’m glad a comedian has addressed our hair as they tend to perpetuate a stereotype of black hair and weave’s etc

it’s so interesting to read this board. black people are as ignorant about black hair as white people are and that’s sad
1.i recommend the site CURLY NIKKI. she has seriously gorgeous hair and features other women with beautiful hair. and if you think you have to relax your hair to be pretty, you’re probably not very cute anyway. sorry, just being real
2. nappy or kinky does not equal rough. idk what type of hair you have but mine is soft. i have people touching my hair everyday, complimenting me on how beautiful it is. any black woman can have soft hair. the thing is that our hair is naturally dryer than other races- their hair produces oil but ours doesn’t and people need to stop using grease- grease is not moisturizing
3.if you take care of your hair, it’ll be manageable. don’t give the whole “my hair is so thick” excuse b/c PLENTY of natural haired women have thick hair too and still make it work
4. you can press your hair if you want it to be straight. heat isn’t good but it’s better than chemicals. i’m personally not one for a fro so i keep my hair curly or in braids. if i want it straight, i press it. all u need is a hair straightener

Cant wait to see this movie, i hope it adresses the issue well. I’ve been a natural for 6 months. but i havent had a relaxer in 2 years and my hair is almost back to its regular length which was mid back now its arm pit length. and healthy as ever, havent seen a split end since i did my Big Chop in Feb. and Natural hair is not hard to manage nor comb its so0o easy I can just wash my hair and go. Detangle when its wet with some conditioner. I’ve received so many compliments and people ask me if its my real hair. but i hate when other black females tell me they thought about going natural but their hair isnt good like mine. i never knew i had such beautiful curly hair under the perm. how will you know if you never find out? i think every black female should go natural once in their life its very liberating.

But wait a minute…Hispanic and White women often get perms, weave and dyes as well. And noone makes a fuss about white or hispanic women. Why can’t it be a women in general get these enhancements done to their hair? If we say natural is okay…say away from nail polish and make up. How about pierce ears or cosmetic surgery? We weren’t born with tattoos or pierced ears. I’m not buying it. I say whatever subtle enhancements makes us happy, is great. This is just another opportunity to pick on just black women. I tried buying from a black owned hair store. My choices were limited and the prices were outrageous. People buy what they want and is good for them. I have yet to find a black owned hair store in my community that offers me the variety that the Korean stores do. I’m not going to buy something that I do not want or need just to fill someone else’s pocket in the community. Give me what I want and I’ll buy it. The truth is that black hair stores tend to buy from Koreans or Indians (the middleman) because they do not have the access to buy hair such products directly. Therefore, the higher cost is passed on to us consumers.

I am really TIRRRRED of comments like #34’s. Worry about your damn self and things related to you. The good/bad hair is still an issue w/in the black community TODAY so why not speak on it? @ # 67. I dont think its right to be comparing white women’s collegen lips and tanning to black women and relaxers mainly because of the type of metatilty that goes along with it. White ppl have more sense not to take their 7 yr old to the tanning salon for health reasons but the same cannot be said for black parents. Relaxers are chemicals and bad for your health period. But for some reason its ok in the black community to relax a child’s hair, not only is it’s damaging to that child’s hair and health but also to that child’s self-esteem. And there really is no arguing that!
I went natural 9yrs ago, I LEARNED how to manage my hair where its not a problem and I spend like $5 a month on hair products….Not to mention I dont have to be worry about relaxing my hair when I’m 75yrs old all cuz I’m worried about what other ppl deem is appropiate or cuz Im too stupid/lazy to ever learn how to properly take care of my own hair.

oh and HIspanics suffer from the same self-hating mentatilty too. They have the same issues as well, both the whites ones and the blacks, and they do they same thing. The only difference is that more Hispanics think its ok to wanna be/look white, it’s encouraged in their community, but as u can see it this type of issue causes a riot amoung us blacks.
oh,also when white women get weaves it usually to enhance their own natural hair, not to dramatially change their appearance, I mean I dont see white women getting weaves of afro texture onto their striaght hair,
Dont get me wrong, If a black woman wants to relax her hair then thats cool, as long as she’s doing it for the right reasons..(styling, managability, cuz she likes striaght styles). But nothing screams SELF-HATE more than a black woman with damaged broken off relaxed hair (esp. when the hairline is missing, yuck) or a poorly done terrible looking weave. I mean whats the point? Its kinda like those plastic surgeon addicts who looks terrible but keep going under the knife or a white women who has skin caner but keeps tanning. And all of us on this site know damn well Im right. Get it together black ppl lol!!!

My daughter is 8 months old…and she has a head of beautiful, kinky, curly hair..and a whooole lot of it!!! But i admit, when she reaches 6th or 7th grade, ill probably perm it just so my mornings can be easier and so she can do her own hair..lol. That’s the only reason my mom let me get a perm at age 12 because she was sick of slapping me upside the head with a comb every time she would comb it.
Not everyone perms hair because they are ashamed or want silky hair. One thing I love about my relaxed, healthy hair is that it is very versatile– I can let it air dry and rock the kinky look, to the point where it looks like my hair is natural and has been pressed; or I can switch it up with my Chi flat iron and have a manageable straight look.
I give props to all the sistas with natural hair…you deserve accolades for keep it up!!

And i want to admit…I tried going natural when i got pregnant last year (my OB was against relaxers during pregnancy) but when i hit 7 months i got a “texturizer”. Then i went back to getting perms after my daughter was born. Shit, I had a summer pregnancy and my kinky fro that was growing was making me hot…lol!!! And braids were too damn expensive!! Natural sistas pay just as much money as relaxed sistas to keep their hair up.
If relaxers do, in fact, cause health problems.. then i will stop immediately.

why do people keep saying that they will only stop relaxing their hair if there are health risks involved?????
relaxer is an acid!!!! look at the ingredients, can you even pronounce any of those words???? do your research and im sure you will think differently.
everything is not for everybody….there are certain hairstyles that just were not meant for our hair. chemically altering your hair to wear hairstyles not meant for you will get you know where.
black women are at high risk for damn near everything aids, breast cancer, diabetes, high blood pressure,…… and the list goes on.
why put yourself in even more danger by putting chemicals on your head? did you all forget that your BRAIN is in there? do you honestly think those chemicals dont seep into your scalp everytime you go get a touch up?
if relaxer touches your skin it slow burns it off so stop putting it in your damn hair! if you dont know how to comb the natural hair that grows from your own scalp then something is really wrong with you. african women have been maintaining their hair for centuries before relaxer was invented. if they did it im sure you can too.

Just a few facts;
As you ladies age the abuse from the relaxers really becomes evident.
Relaxers are a base…not an acid…but still very caustic.
We know a lot Black men like long hair and relaxed length does not come anywhere close to loc-ked length or loose natural hair .
Black people in general spend a greater percentage of their income on hair care/styling than any other ethnic group.

Chris rock is funny though so if I did see it it would be because of him. Paul Mooney is fuuny too! Lay-A-Way wigs HAS to be the most “country” thing I have ever heard! Weave (although some need it) are the worse things ever invented. A good one looks decent a bad one looks HORRIBLE. If you insist on wearing them PLEASE make sure it is the same texture as you OWN hair..jeez I am tired of seeing these 2 and 3 texture hair styles ha-ha. Another thing: PLEASE quit showing up with 2 inch hair one day and 14i nches the next…TOO drastic. If you chose not to wear weave or a perm at least put a comb, heat and shampoo (tired of running into these musty-headed girls) to that head (Solange—haha) no need in looking like your head hasnt EVER met a brush! That’s TOO natural!

Nappy hair is not hard to comb if you learn how to comb it properly. I used to think the same thing but after trying different products and watching you tube videos from natural sisters and their styling methods I would never put a perm in my hair but I don’t knock some one that does. I have managed to save a lot of money going natural and go swimming almost 4 times a week with no worries. If your reason behind getting a perm is because it is easier to manage then cool. Just don’t make dumb ass comments to me about my natural hair. It’s just funny to me that I get hit on by more white dudes and brothers since I started rockin my fro.

wow some of these comments are very disheartening. I am a LIGHTSKIN woman with NATURAL hair and yes it is KINKY not nappy, nappy is such a negative term can we please stop using that word? and secondly there is nothing unmanageable about it you folks just don’t know how to take care of it simply because you are used to taking care of a texture that’s not even your own. I mean seriously, the only reason why alot of black women don’t have long hair is because they keep slapping weaves and lacefronts on. how do you expect he sh*t to grow if you aren’t taking good care of it? All my sisters and mom including I ALL have natural hair and its LONG ….it grows just as fast as anyone else’s. So what’s the problem? Do your research and it will grow to the lengths you want it to. I agree #153, any other race of women (or men) can alter their appearance without being questioned by darkening their skins with tanning beds, getting breast/butt implants, lip fillers, extensions/hair plugs, losing weight etc. You know why they get away with this? Because only in the black community do we have so many people, even strangers, who take such a invasive, judgemental interest in what every other black person is doing or wearing in the spirit of the old crabs-in-a-barrel theory. I have never heard white girls saying to each other in public “oh are those your real boobs/lips? They look so real!” but strangers will come up to me and ask if I am wearing my real hair because we are both black people and its “okay”. We live in a free-choice society, I choose to relax my hair for the same reasons that white women choose to get injected/lose weight/change hair color–because we can. The natural nazis can say whatever they want, life is too short and people shouldn’t have to change for them. Just another movie attacking black women, don’t think we forgot about your anti-black women comments Chris; besides, i’ve already had my fill of attack movies for the month after watching “A Diary of a Tired Black Man” or whatever its called.

FYI, there are just as many if not more black women who don’t perm their daughters hair. I was one of them. I’m not going to speak on white women mainly because I really don’t have white friends since high school, so what they do is of no concern to me. Didn’t have a perm till I was 18 yrs. My mother is natural and so was my grandmother. Matter of fact, I don’t do my nails although they are very long and strong. A black woman refused to put tips on my nails. She said I would regret it. I don’t wear make-up either. Something else my mother tried to discourage. Anyway, back to the hair. I go back and forth. I wear braids, natural or whatever I feel like depending on the occasion. Hair IMO is like an accessory. I have fun with it. It isn’t that serious.

I am a proud black natural hair wearing sista for more than 20 years now and I give the credit to my direct influence: my mother who was ahead of her time by wearing African headdreses and who always emphasized the beauty of our African culture while she raised me and my siblings in an all white town. But I emphathize with my sistas still in bondage with the perm hair. The majority of us sistas have gone through the hair slavery period by perming our natural roots and I was a victim of that and suffered the consequences. I bugged my mother to perm my hair when I was young girl because the white girls at my school had the straight flip look and since I wouldn’t leave her alone about it, she gave in warning me about the consequences. The result was damage so bad to the back of my head, it was bald for several years. I learned an extremely valuable lesson that day - love your natural self. However, it took several years before I finally went complelely natural with locs, then with my own natural afro. Ironically, as a woman trying to be attractive to the other sex, I received most of my compliments and dates when I was natural and ladies, the men loved running their fingers through my locs and my afro because it’s real and natural not fake! I say to all, keep it real! Don’t confuse natural by depriving yourself of your beautiful assets. You can wear natural makeup and dress sexy and still be naturally beautiful. Try it! You will instantly see the results and attract the kind of man you are supposed to be with.
