Reports are surfacing that Baatin, a rapper and member of Detroit rap group Slum Village, has passed away. Celebrities like singer Dwele and rapper Talib Kweli (who have worked with Baatin on numerous occasions), have been confirming the sad news all Saturday afternoon.
Producer 9th Wonder also confirmed the death via his twitter, saying
“RIP BAATIN of SLUM VILLAGE-LETS CELEBRATE OUR PEOPLE WHILE THEY ARE HERE……….we are losing folk”.
The cause of death has not yet been reported; however Baatin became sick touring in France in 2004 and left the group to seek treatment. Its not apparent if the cause of death is related to this illness. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his friends and family.

RIP Baatin. I still like “Tainted”.
………Boy I swear……….(smmfh).
………some people (who’s name I won’t mention, *coughs #23 coughs*) on this
…….particular post are just plain “DISRESPECTFUL, IGNORANT & RETARDED.”
i love slum village, i’m crying now…35? that doesn’t even make sense…
and i grew up on it..smh i can’t even take all this death lately…
R.I.P Baatin……He was a dope rapper with his unique voice.
R.I.P. Baatin. His verse was on Tainted was so true about the industry. True lyricist.
@23 What an awful thing to say about someone who not only just died but based on something as petty as pic. Grow the hell up.
aw this is sad I loved slum villages’ selfish with Kanye…..RIP son
@#23 No matter how he died,he didn’t die in some sort of scandle…DAMN have some respect for the departed, and hope like hell someone will remember you when your time comes.R.I.P to all of our people who returned home!
I was a fan of Slum Village and I loved their hit single “Selfish” that came out a few years back but I’ll be praying for his fam and may he rest in peace.
OMG this is crazy…I was just thinking about then yesterday, and listening my ringtone “Selfish”…we are losing to many ppl man, we need to love and appreciate everyone and everything we have today before its gone tomorrow…my thoughts and prayers go out to his friends and family
SINGING : Yea maybe I’m selfish, I want you to myself I cant help it…
wow.
life is way tooo short!
LAWD, # 23 do you know what kind of door you just opened up. I can just feel the witch doctor lurking now. Its not fair that this newly deceased man is about to be poorly subjected to unneccessary and unwanted criticism about HIS life. His soul didnt even get a chance to rest yet. Damn.
May Baatin rest in peace.
RIP…..i’am 34 so this is really upsetting. and like the post says let’s start to appreciate these artists NOW not AFTER. and not just with awards every year like patti labelle and others. but let’s show these artists love and start buying their material more than always downloading it. these artists are literally selling their souls for the fans!!
Wow! I rocked hard to Tainted the summer of 200?… I can’t rememer. R.I.P.
GOD BLESS your LIFE. BAATIN…. he will truly be miss.
jus thinking man, live life cuss tomarrow isn’t promise.
@23 I could say some disrespectful things, but am not. You just really look very disrepectful and dumb like you don’t know no better and thats what people are proberly thinking of you when they read your comment!

I cannot take anymore deaths. I do not know this particular artist but this is too much.
is this going to make it on CNN???
@42 Hallelujah! Fantastic Vol2 is one of my all time faves….
i STILL don’t think people have a clue about the Slum Vill and Dillas contribution to music….Dilla (who passed away from kidney failure) brought out the best from Busta and created an alliance amongst some of the most prolific artists of this generation; Raphael Saadiq, Badu (The Healer is a dedication to him, FYI), James Poyser, Quest Love, D’angelo..on and on… Dilla was and is a Genius influencing sooo many young producers and artists…(Q-Tip, Platinum Pied Piper, SaRa and Georgia Anne Muldrowe is my fave)
And Baatin battled a lot of demons….he suffered from mental illness which is still not addressed as it should be within our generations community (check the Hip Hop Mental Health Project). We don’t concern ourselves with our mental and physical state as we should….hopefully we can use this experience to 1) celebrate the lives of two amazing artists (RIP Dilla and Baatin) and 2) Raise awareness of the importance of practicing self-preservation, of elevating our health!
This Is Sad I Pray For His Family REST IN PEACE…..
So sad, thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends. I looooved ‘Tainted Love’ and bought the whole album b/c of this single. Also introduced me to Dwele and I’ve been a fan ever since. Damn.
He seemed like one of the good ones….Rest in peace, brother!
That is sad to hear. I loved that group, what ever happened to them.
#52- Thank you for the information.
I didn’t get into SV until later, and I didn’t realize how many wonderful tracks Dilla was the mastermind to until much later…..I realized I was already loving him, listening to his influence on Tribe Called Quest tracks, etc.
Didn’t SV do a track about Baatin once (“Reunion”)? That’s what made me do research on the group.
And also #52—-thanks for enlightening the toddler children of the world like #23!
R.I.P. Baatin…….
I was shocked when I heard this.Baatin along with Dilla are incomparable.
Actually Telephone from Erykah Badu is about Dilla..
man, this is a total loss! i have so many of their songs on my ipod. their music was always positive and unfortunately too overlooked.
its true about black ppl and mental illness. . .the song reunion touched on it but i didnt really look into it.
whatever the cause of death RIP
