ALBUM REVIEW: JAY-Z - THE BLUEPRINT 3
Tuesday, September 8, 2009

After a two year album hiatus, Hip-Hop heavyweight, Jay-Z is back with his 11th album, “The Blueprint 3″. The album (which was supposed to be released next week but pushed up due to constant leaking), finds the rapper/entrepreneur telling you that he is bored with the current state of hip-hop and then some.
LISTEN UP:
In his infamous big brother style “do as I say not as I did” tone, this album sheds the transparency of Cristal and fast cars and trades them in for the executive life. You know the kind where you’re so high above the game that it really doesn’t matter what kind of music you put out? Most obvious on the horn-heavy “Thank You,” the Brooklyn native still proudly carries New York’s biggest borough on his back but is more content in his position at the top of the rap game.
Much like the lackluster “Run This Town,” “Venus vs. Mars,” and “D.O.A.” some of the album is a bore but beneath the musical dilapidation, lies an undeniable swagger (yes I said “swagger” but only for Hov). “Empire State,” accompanied by the vocals of Alicia plus her ever-present keys is a reflective account of a journey to the top. Then there’s the amazing Swizz Beatz production of “On To the Next.” Complete with the background stylings of a clap beat, drums, a hint of snare and quiet possibly a xylophone what sounds like an instrumental smorgasbord that wouldn’t mesh well, bonds together quite nicely.
Throwing in a little something for the kiddies that he can no longer relate to, by way of “Off That” featuring Drake, Jay continues on his braggadocios stride. Unfortunately he missteps as Drake seems a little too young an impressionable himself to comprehend the hook he’s singing. “So Ambitious” might be just that to the average listener, but for those inspired by the stratospheric production style of Pharrell and his Neptunes team, it’s right on track.
As a complete body of work The Blueprint 3 lacks the conceptual gumption of American Gangster, but plays on the avant-garde experimentation of the badly received Kingdom Come. Produced mostly by Kanye West, there’s little wonder that it comes off a tad conceited (be sure to listen up for West getting extra lazy with his feature on the song “Hate”). On the plus side, Jay kept Beyonce off the record, as she never seems to work as well being featured on his songs, as he does on hers. Upon a second listen songs like “Young Forever,” featuring Mr. Hudson are far less off-putting than the first go ‘round. So if you’re looking for tall tales of drug dealing, life in Marcy Projects, or bottle-poppin in the club, this is definitely not the album for you. But like it or not 11 albums in Jay has come a long way, so why not give credit where credit is due?
Top Picks: “Empire State of Mind”, “On To The Next” and “Reminder”
Make sure you pick up your copy of Jay-Z’s The Blueprint 3 in stores or online today.

THIS IS A FOR SURE GREAT ALBUM…NOT A CLASSIC NO BUT DEFINITELY NOT A “LACKLUSTER” COMPOSITION…ESPECIALLY COMPARED TO A LOT OF MUSIC THAT IS OUT AS OF NOW AND IF IT WERE COMPARED IT WOULD BE CONSIDERED A CLASSIC…NOT THE JAY OF OLD BUT A MORE INTROSPECTIVE HOV

@ #26 and #38….I agree.
The idea of the ‘Blueprint’ is Jay-Z sarcastically explaining that his footsteps cannot be retraced. On the simply riveting “Thank You,” he foreshadows the forthcoming #1 debut of this third Blueprint installment, which brings (or will bring) his grand total to 11. Not too shabby, and certainly nothing another rapper can rival.
Jigga isn’t worried about topping himself; it can’t be done. But here, more prominently than ever, he discusses how any effort he makes will prove superior to even his closest competitor.
Don’t miss the point of the record. Mr. Shawn Carter himself is in the top slot. The Blueprint 3 may not eclipse the original Blueprint or Reasonable Doubt, or even American Gangster (which thrived from the film’s subject matter), but it is not a career low point. Kingdom Come and The Blueprint 2 were far less focused and inconsistent.
And as it has been said here numerous times, “review” the album after listening thoroughly and try to capture the motives behind the songs. It’s clear that this is Jigga’s brag-a-thon and he’s well obliged to brag.

Sounds amazing to me !
People just need to grow the fuck up and start living in the present ! All the people disappointed by this album were just waitin for sequels to “big pimpin” , “la la la ” and all that good stuff! yep these were great but dude is not doin all dat shit anymo, rap game has changed and he needs to evolve too
this does not mean sell out just evolve
Jay Z has been around for generations now ! Yep he’s “old” compared to others and so what ? And the lyrics are incredible !

Great review, except for one thing… Beyonce IS on the album. Even if it’s just for a line or two “Daddy go hard” on Venus vs. Mars… he kept her on it. Which i think is worth the mention. That’s his wife, she doesn’t need to be featured on the album, but in true hubby form, he managed to still squeeze her in.

Okay, some of these comments yet again are bogus. But the tracks that I liked were:
Thank You
D.O.A Death of Autotune
Run this Town
Real as it Gets
Empire State of Mind
Hate
On to the Next
Off That
Venus vs. Mars
Already Home
Young Forever
So Ambitious
Ain’t I
The tracks that are so-so with me are:
Ghetto Techo
Jockin’ Jay Z
History
Brooklyn (Go Hard)
My President is Black
He definitely out did himself with this one, but I do enjoy. Whenever a rapper can come out with an album and more than 10 of the tracks are hot. That phenomenal!!!!
There’s not to many rappers that have supported over 5 years, other than Eminem. Dre needs to hurry up and come out with that DETOX and quick.

lol i see you slyly trynna start some sh*t. so what if rihanna’s on it and not his wife. just cause they’re married doesnt mean they have to feature on each others’ albums. which brings me to my next point: BEYONCE IS ON THE ALBUM
lmao, i love how people just express their ignorance on here. she’s on a version of Venus and Mars.
BP3 is one of the best albums i’ve bought in a while. Jay outdid himself. i personally think those who find his album ‘boring’ are fans of noisemakers like Soulja Boy and the rest. they have no idea of what real hip hop is
btw congrats to him for his number spot on the UK Singles Chart with ‘Run This Town’. it went straight to number 1…literally

jay has been on the radio , all week big boy in the morning and he makes a lot od sense. hes having fun hes talking a lot of good stuff, about how he decided to do this album and how he tries to out do himself he makes a lot od sense to me . and until all of the people thats older than jay retire let him do his thing, who cares. if you are having fun why quit, when you are doing something that you love doing. and he and his wife can always put out a new album together. she will be throwing down another one soon and he will be on it no doubt, but i see where they are coming from they both appeals to two entirely different groups of people. so its all good weather bey is on the album are not, people are so judgemental and always have their own take on all things that they see and hear. i love the album.

make sure you read #38, right on the money….
the CL review is pretty wack, sorry but thats the truth….anybody who thinks “Run this Town” (or even D.O.A.) is lackluster really has no idea what they’re talking about smh
you really do have to listen to the album as a complete work…its crazy how much better “Off That” sounds when its played right after “On To the Next One”(even though the Swizz Beatz track was meant for the club, Hov’s lyrics are crazy on this one). And if “Already Home” isn’t even mentioned as one of the album stand-outs you’re missing the whole feeling of BP3….
“Niggas want my old shit, /buy my old album.”
-On to the Next One
“Venus vs. Mars” is a crazy concept for a track, same goes for “A Star is Born”. And “Hate” might be above a lot of peoples heads, but it probably should be since its so next level (makes me wish it was longer), but its still the classic back and forth that Run DMC built the roots of hip-hop on.
Overall, the album is really a statement of where Jay-Z is at in his mind, and it might not be his best ever, but its probably the best that HE could have possibly put out at this point in his life (just like reasonable doubt, the blueprint 1, and even more mediocre records like Vol 3.)
“Yeah so on this summation I don’t know who you racing… I’m already at the finish line with the flag waving…” - Already Home
Standout Tracks:
Empire State of Mind, Already Home, On to the Next One, Run This Town
Overall: 4/5 stars

i think that i have a respect for this guy because i know where he has come from, and how hard it must have been for him to get to where he is today. and there is still some more youngesters that will slowly climb right up there just like jay did. it takes a lot of self control and of course hard work and hooking up with the right people. i often make a comparison of jay, 50, diddy, timb, dr. dre, em, swizz, and all of them and quess what all of them has shifted it into second gear and they are moving on out. thats the way you do it get up and make some noise.and stop complaining.

Glad i’m not the only one who thinks that the album wasnt as good as some of his earlier work. Didnt wanna sound like a “Hata”..lol. But seriously..umm.. NO. The album did not move me the least bit. Though im not a fan particularly of Jay i still give all music a chance..to hear the lyrics and metaphors and such. This just didnt do it for me at all. It’s about that time Jay. Just hang it up and focus on Rhianna, Kanye and your wife!.

and mrs jay is busy running her empire and she has worked overtime to get to her spot . and there is still room at the top for who ever that wants to work and sweat and do all of the things that it takes to get you up to the top. you just can’t knock anothers work habits because that is what they have decided that they want to do. and i think that RUN THIS TOWN IS THE BEST CUT OFF THE ENTIRE ALBUM TO ME, its loaded to me and all of them brings it extra hard on that one, we shall see.the sales on that one will tell the story.

Ok I heard the cd from top to bottom for the past hour w/o missing a beat.
The cd lacksluster. Yeah I said it.
Hands down there are 3 songs on the CD that are bangers.
1. to the next 1
2. forever young
3. venus vs. mars
From a commercial stand point I’ll give u
4. d.o.a
5. run this town
6. empire state
7. a star is born.
so that’s 3/15 or 7/15 - IM STRETCHING THAT LIST!!!
So from Jay Z’s grown man standpoint its not hot for him. I agree w/ some1 who said he’s running out of things to say.
But dont take my word for it Jay is set to sell 350,00 first week.

I definitely didn’t like the album originally, but it has grown on me. Once you realize where he is coming from (semi-retired, successful, etc.) it makes sense. I compare it to Kanye’s 808’s, in the sense, that once I understood he[Kanye] was depressed over the loss of his mom and brokenhearted the album made sense. Jay is living a different lifestyle now, taking some time to get used to, but I’m gettting there. Do I still wish for the Hov of yesteryears, yes, but he said it best, N*GGAS WANT MY OLD SHIT, BUY MY OLD ALBUM!

I don’t get the hype about Empire State of Mind. I’m tired of hearing about how great it is to be a New Yorker. I’m tired of the adulterer Alicia’s screaming and screeching. She cannot sing all that good. But the album does have some pretty good songs on it. It’s one of the better albums this year.

If you don’t go out and buy black music, then it’s going to go away. Yall going to be stuck listening to Miley Cyrus, Green Day and Taylor Swift all day. Give Jay his props, he’s been doing it for a minute. And he still puts out hot albums. The man is about to beat Elvis in the record books for the most consecutive #1 albums in history. Appreciate somebody black being legendary. It seem like with black people once somebody has been #1 for a long time, some of us just turn on the person for that reason. Not too many other races are like that. We need to get our minds right before it’s too late.

@ 67 It’s funny how nobody else has said anything about Beyonce’s breath. You ain’t never had people lie on you. The writer Toure said that rumor was bull*hit. I swear I wish people could be famous for about a year and see how it feels to have bull*hit spread about them, based on what one person said. First, Nas’ baby mama was jealous of Beyonce like some women are. She was getting dumped by Nas, and I bet Nas talked about how fine Beyonce is on a few occassions in front of her.
Secondly, if Nas did say it for real he was just jealous that him and Beyonce never became a couple. She was in one of his videos first before she got with Jay. Now, you know Nas would want Beyonce over Kelis.

Beyonce was on Bonnie and Clyde and that song was major. Other than that, Jay has never released a song as a single that Beyonce was on. They still have great collaborations on Jay’s albums like the song Hollywood, even if it’s not a single. Plus, Beyonce is on Venus v. Mars. I think she was added later so that might be the reason why she’s not showing on the credits. But that’s definitely Beyonce’s voice on the hook of that song. I heard the version with Cassie only, too, and you can barely hear her. Her voice is too weak to be on a track with that strong a beat. Beyonce’s voice added that extra sexy edge that was needed on the song.

@111 you convinced me to buy his album. I agree we should support black arts, I preach it all the time. So I’ll buy the dvd/cd from amazon, that should be more entertaining.
@ Julia - ur 100% rt. I heard that is bey lacing that track, that’s probably why it’s one of my best songs on the cd.
& empire state of mind is Jay repping his city as New Yorkers always do. Hey dont fault the man for living in the greatest city in the world. but I agree Akeys lends nothing to the song. He was better off getting estelle to sing the hook since it appears that Akeys is trying to duplicate her style.
But Jay went hard on the 3rd verse I listened to that verse 5x’s last night & poor Rihanna. It’s true that weekend in Vegas w/ her posted up w/ Tata one night, Jay brown the next - US CL BLOGGERS called it out!!! she was being passed around & Jay called her on it!. Geesh!
