NEWS: 16-YEAR-OLD STUDENT BEATEN TO DEATH (AND CAUGHT ON TAPE)
Monday, September 28, 2009
Derrion Albert, a 16-year-old honors student at Fenger High School in Chicago, was beaten to death during a fight between two gangs that broke out on the street as he walked home from school last Thursday, and it was caught on tape.
Silvonus Shannon, 19, Eugene Riley, 18, and Eric Carson, 16, have been charged as adults of first-degree murder and were held without bail on Monday afternoon.
Albert was beaten to death with long planks of wood and when he fell to the ground, he was stomped in the head. Prosecutors say Albert was “merely a bystander” as two groups of students from different neighborhoods fought.
Mary Washington, who lives in the neighborhood, said it has long been plagued by gang violence. “They’re killing our children, our hope for the future. When will it stop?”
Police said that an amateur video helped detectives identify the participants in the melee outside the Agape Community Center. The video shows dozens of people punching, kicking and swinging wooden planks in a melee next to the community center and the adjacent street. At one point, four or five males — including one wielding a two-by-four — can be seen beating and stomping another person, believed to be Albert, who had fallen to the ground.

This is horrible. Watching the blows that they were giving him while he was already down. And then watching as his friends have to lift him from the ground to take him away so that he won’t get hit again while yelling out his name and begging him to get up, and the way others just ran off and went to go look at the rest of the fight down the block. This is just heart breaking. My hand was covering my mouth the whole time watching this. My parents always told me, when a fight breaks out, don’t run to it, run from it, it’s always the ones that aren’t even involved to get hurt. May he RIP and my prayers go out to his real friends and his family.

This is too painful to watch, but I think it needs to be seen so that people (especially our youth) can understand that gang violence and riots, etc. hurt and rip apart families and opportunities. My heart goes out to the families of all involved. Not only one child’s life has been ruined, but so have the lives of the three young black men who committed the heinous crime.

I completly agree. Who ever taped that should be pnished as well. It’s like it was entertainment for them. How could you sit there and watch that and NOT do anything to help that boy?? I just don’t get it, and I never will. I wasn’t raised how these kids were so I will never understand the “fun” in watchiang someone get beat. Weather or not the person dies, I could just never watch it. I hope all of the kids involved go to a max security proison for the rest of their lives….. I should NEVER be able to see the light of day again.
And @ #5…. I kinda want Angel to take the video down as well. It’s very disturbing. Even if you don’t play the video just looking at the still, you can imagine what’s about to happen.

#1 (MEME). An event like this shouldn’t make you embarrassed to be who you are. This wasn’t a black or white situation, just pent-up adolescent aggression. It definetly looked like rival gangs in black t-shirts and khahi pants. National Geographic has been broadcasting more shows…glorifying prison and gang violence. Do these shows help or hurt. Rage can be stored up until it erupts into destruction. Why did that young man return to the victim while he laid unconscious on the ground and clob him with the plank. Rage!!!
While this murder was happening, Obama is planning to travel to Denmark to make the case for having his hometown of Chicago host the 2016 Olympics. The same Chicago, where one writer said “…mothers give birth at age 12, and they listen to the same music as the children”. Los Angeles is just as bad.
There was so much confussion, I couldn’t tell who the innocent “bystanders” were. What makes us want to standby? What makes us want to take amateur videos? Its easy to get caught up in the frenzy!

I understand the reasoning as to why this video has been posted, but I feel as though it should be taken down. Clearly this is an unfortunate event and it shows that we still have a very long way to go as individuals. This video has really saddened me because this was a young man who had so much promise and had to lose his life over something very stupid. I am sure that there will be someone who will say “you don’t know the situation to say it was stupid” but anytime that there is an incident where a young person has to lose his or her life usually results in a stupid reason behind it. I pray for the families involved in this matter, both the victim’s as well as the suspects involved, because not only was one life lost, but many others were lost as well. To all young people reading this, please know that we live in a world that is filled with hate and things that are not the way of God and we have to steer clear of anything that is not Christ like or that may cause us harm. Stay in school, surround yourself with positive role modles, PRAY, and if you’re ever put in a situation such as this, get away from it as best as you can. RIP young brother and I can only pray that you’ve gone on to a far better place than this earth.
P.S. Please remove this video as it only rehashes the hurt and pain involved in this terrible incident.

That is why they call us NIGGAS!!!! That is why our race continues to fail. That right there is the problem. Us successful, educated black people are continually overshadowed by NIGGAS!!!! We lost yet another young black boy (honor student) that would have more than likely grown up into a “black man” that would at least have to the little diginity our race has left through his academic success. When will you young NIGGAs wake up? When? We black people are tired of talking to you. You’ve heard this enough.
I’m proud of my black women. You seem to have gotten the “wake up” memo far before us men. Never have I been more angry at us until what I just saw today. It is a shame

I’m from Chicago and I tell you from 26 years of experience. “Be careful when you walk these streets”
It saddens me deeply that this young boy was killed, brutally beaten by other young boys. Please lord I ask you to deliver us from this evil that is plauging our streets, getting inside the minds of our youth and entering our homes. Honestly everyday watching the news here in Chicago is heartbreaking. It’s so much violence on the streets of Chicago that it’s stifilng! That i dont even think that there are enough Police Officers readily avialable to patrol all the areas. It makes me want to grab hold of my 2yr old, run away and hide. When i was coming up it wasn’t this bad…it wasn’t! At least we respected our elders, carried ourselves with more respect than the kids do today. You’ll be afraid to look at the youth wrong in this day in age let alone say something to them! The bout pull out a pistol and blow your damn head off! I can recall last year a young 16 or 17yr old girl got shot in the face on the bus.. ON THE BUS! Like dam the bus aint even safe. We’ve got be more than careful these days foreal and it’s sad b/c it’s our babies. 1 problem as I see it though as being a native of Chicago is that the “Southside” is too big! It’s everywhere! Spreads from 22nd to 95th going North to south and spreads as far as Ashland all the way East past Jeffery! It’s like a big ass sespool of violence!..like the only way to escape it is to either try to move up north and go BROKE..or move out of the CHI…not sounding like a bad idea right now…seriously.
R.I.P.

HOWEVER, gang violence is EVERYWHERE. im from chicago & not ALL chicagoans behave in this manner. i now live in los angeles & the gangs here are just as bad. a baby was shot in his head this past weekend due to gang violence… so its not JUST chicago. lets look at the bigger picture and realize that gang violence of any type, anywhere needs to be diminished.

I am not surprised just hurt at the FACT that this behavior is something that will continuously PERSIST if people choose to ignore the fact that those kids are brought up to react that way. I feel soo sorry for that young man but I know he is now somewhere in peace and that situation is something he doesnt have to live with.
Now @ #1…dont ever be ashamed of the color of your SKINtone. Just because ANOTHER of the same skintone and background of yourself does something stupid does not mean in any shape or form that that person is representing who you are. Please note that this type of violence does not persist only within the BLACK community, if you do your research you will notice VIOLENCE AMONGST young to old ppl of the same race happens within EVERY CULTURE AND EVERY COUNTRY. Black are more KNOWN for it because this COUNTRY chooses to recognize BLACKS negativities rather our positives.
The best way to eliminate situations like this isnt going out to your nearest gun store to buy a GUN just to elevate violence, violence against violence is not a solution but simply a terrible WAR that will forever continue. The best way to defend yourself is to LET GOD be your defense. No man made weapon in this world will protect you from any negatives or violence. You best defense is to be FEARLESS IN GOD and with that persona and defense in GOD you are merely invincible to all enemies inclduing weapons. Trust in GOD, and continue to PRAY for all.

I live in Chicago as well. I lived on the north and west sides of the cty. There is always certain areas on the north, south, east, and west side that you don’t venture into because of ingorance like this. Its sad what happened to this young man with so much promise and with so much to offer the world. It looks like most of the kids were wearing the school’s uniform shirts - somehow they mistook him for one of the kids in involved in the gang fight or they were just being malicious and just beating other people for no apparent reason. The people videotaping this could have been calling the people, while the camera was rolling and the people driving thrpugh honking they’re horns could’ve called the police as well. This is just sad. This is one of the example of why large to small businesses will NOT open in certain neighborhoods because they’re looking at demographic to determine where the high crimes area are & those are the area they avoid opening up their business.

THIS BULL **** NEEDS TO STOP!!!
I am outraged at the random acts of violence that our children are inflicting on one another.
I am so hurt that a fine young man such as this with an amazingly bright future could be caught up and murdered by young men with misguided ideals about life.
I am sad, and I am praying for the family of this young man, who will be missed by his family in ways we can not imagine.
I am asking why did this happen?
Why are the fathers leaving their sons to become killers because they don’t see a way out?
When are the fathers going to collectively come back into the home?
Why don’t these men care about these boys?
How could these men think that these children were just a seed that needed no love, no guidance, no support, no gifts, nothing…
My heart is crying out for all the children who continue to be caught up in the wrong place violence. I’m hurt because this could have been my son. I’m hurt because this young man can no longer dream dreams. I’m hurt…

You guys have no idea. I haven’t and will not watch the video and I too vote that it should be taken down. To recognize the violence is one thing to post this sickness is another.
One thing though, Mayer Daley is way more concerned with winning the Olympic bid than protecting out youth. But even more than that… the parents are sad. They don’t parent their children and are afraid of them at this point. This childs death is proof of what the children here are capable of.

All those babies are purely victims of poverty, and the vicious cycle that will continue to raise our babies like that. TRULY sad but undoubtly true. The government can careless the system and so forth. Its us as a people and community that have to profoundly start givin these babies recognition. Because those babies feel thats the only way to be recoginzed or to recieve some form of power through violence…if theyre not recieivin love care or affection violence and destruction becomes there outlets towards that. Everyone commits sins so we cant throw stones, please dont do that. We need to offer forgiveness love and care and most certainly help..until then face what reality has for us.
