NEWS: 16-YEAR-OLD STUDENT BEATEN TO DEATH (AND CAUGHT ON TAPE)

Monday, September 28, 2009

Derrion Albert, a 16-year-old honors student at Fenger High School in Chicago, was beaten to death during a fight between two gangs that broke out on the street as he walked home from school last Thursday, and it was caught on tape.

Silvonus Shannon, 19, Eugene Riley, 18, and Eric Carson, 16, have been charged as adults of first-degree murder and were held without bail on Monday afternoon.

Albert was beaten to death with long planks of wood and when he fell to the ground, he was stomped in the head. Prosecutors say Albert was “merely a bystander” as two groups of students from different neighborhoods fought.

Mary Washington, who lives in the neighborhood, said it has long been plagued by gang violence. “They’re killing our children, our hope for the future. When will it stop?

Police said that an amateur video helped detectives identify the participants in the melee outside the Agape Community Center. The video shows dozens of people punching, kicking and swinging wooden planks in a melee next to the community center and the adjacent street. At one point, four or five males — including one wielding a two-by-four — can be seen beating and stomping another person, believed to be Albert, who had fallen to the ground.

WE HAVE REMOVED THE VIDEO FROM CL.

This is horrible. Watching the blows that they were giving him while he was already down. And then watching as his friends have to lift him from the ground to take him away so that he won’t get hit again while yelling out his name and begging him to get up, and the way others just ran off and went to go look at the rest of the fight down the block. This is just heart breaking. My hand was covering my mouth the whole time watching this. My parents always told me, when a fight breaks out, don’t run to it, run from it, it’s always the ones that aren’t even involved to get hurt. May he RIP and my prayers go out to his real friends and his family.

This is too painful to watch, but I think it needs to be seen so that people (especially our youth) can understand that gang violence and riots, etc. hurt and rip apart families and opportunities. My heart goes out to the families of all involved. Not only one child’s life has been ruined, but so have the lives of the three young black men who committed the heinous crime.

I completly agree. Who ever taped that should be pnished as well. It’s like it was entertainment for them. How could you sit there and watch that and NOT do anything to help that boy?? I just don’t get it, and I never will. I wasn’t raised how these kids were so I will never understand the “fun” in watchiang someone get beat. Weather or not the person dies, I could just never watch it. I hope all of the kids involved go to a max security proison for the rest of their lives….. I should NEVER be able to see the light of day again.
And @ #5…. I kinda want Angel to take the video down as well. It’s very disturbing. Even if you don’t play the video just looking at the still, you can imagine what’s about to happen.

#1 (MEME). An event like this shouldn’t make you embarrassed to be who you are. This wasn’t a black or white situation, just pent-up adolescent aggression. It definetly looked like rival gangs in black t-shirts and khahi pants. National Geographic has been broadcasting more shows…glorifying prison and gang violence. Do these shows help or hurt. Rage can be stored up until it erupts into destruction. Why did that young man return to the victim while he laid unconscious on the ground and clob him with the plank. Rage!!!

While this murder was happening, Obama is planning to travel to Denmark to make the case for having his hometown of Chicago host the 2016 Olympics. The same Chicago, where one writer said “…mothers give birth at age 12, and they listen to the same music as the children”. Los Angeles is just as bad.

There was so much confussion, I couldn’t tell who the innocent “bystanders” were. What makes us want to standby? What makes us want to take amateur videos? Its easy to get caught up in the frenzy!

I understand the reasoning as to why this video has been posted, but I feel as though it should be taken down. Clearly this is an unfortunate event and it shows that we still have a very long way to go as individuals. This video has really saddened me because this was a young man who had so much promise and had to lose his life over something very stupid. I am sure that there will be someone who will say “you don’t know the situation to say it was stupid” but anytime that there is an incident where a young person has to lose his or her life usually results in a stupid reason behind it. I pray for the families involved in this matter, both the victim’s as well as the suspects involved, because not only was one life lost, but many others were lost as well. To all young people reading this, please know that we live in a world that is filled with hate and things that are not the way of God and we have to steer clear of anything that is not Christ like or that may cause us harm. Stay in school, surround yourself with positive role modles, PRAY, and if you’re ever put in a situation such as this, get away from it as best as you can. RIP young brother and I can only pray that you’ve gone on to a far better place than this earth.

P.S. Please remove this video as it only rehashes the hurt and pain involved in this terrible incident.

That is why they call us NIGGAS!!!! That is why our race continues to fail. That right there is the problem. Us successful, educated black people are continually overshadowed by NIGGAS!!!! We lost yet another young black boy (honor student) that would have more than likely grown up into a “black man” that would at least have to the little diginity our race has left through his academic success. When will you young NIGGAs wake up? When? We black people are tired of talking to you. You’ve heard this enough.

I’m proud of my black women. You seem to have gotten the “wake up” memo far before us men. Never have I been more angry at us until what I just saw today. It is a shame

I’m from Chicago and I tell you from 26 years of experience. “Be careful when you walk these streets”

It saddens me deeply that this young boy was killed, brutally beaten by other young boys. Please lord I ask you to deliver us from this evil that is plauging our streets, getting inside the minds of our youth and entering our homes. Honestly everyday watching the news here in Chicago is heartbreaking. It’s so much violence on the streets of Chicago that it’s stifilng! That i dont even think that there are enough Police Officers readily avialable to patrol all the areas. It makes me want to grab hold of my 2yr old, run away and hide. When i was coming up it wasn’t this bad…it wasn’t! At least we respected our elders, carried ourselves with more respect than the kids do today. You’ll be afraid to look at the youth wrong in this day in age let alone say something to them! The bout pull out a pistol and blow your damn head off! I can recall last year a young 16 or 17yr old girl got shot in the face on the bus.. ON THE BUS! Like dam the bus aint even safe. We’ve got be more than careful these days foreal and it’s sad b/c it’s our babies. 1 problem as I see it though as being a native of Chicago is that the “Southside” is too big! It’s everywhere! Spreads from 22nd to 95th going North to south and spreads as far as Ashland all the way East past Jeffery! It’s like a big ass sespool of violence!..like the only way to escape it is to either try to move up north and go BROKE..or move out of the CHI…not sounding like a bad idea right now…seriously.

R.I.P.

i agree with most people that this video is evidence that our streets need a clean up…. HOWEVER, gang violence is EVERYWHERE. im from chicago & not ALL chicagoans behave in this manner. i now live in los angeles & the gangs here are just as bad. a baby was shot in his head this past weekend due to gang violence… so its not JUST chicago. lets look at the bigger picture and realize that gang violence of any type, anywhere needs to be diminished.

I am not surprised just hurt at the FACT that this behavior is something that will continuously PERSIST if people choose to ignore the fact that those kids are brought up to react that way. I feel soo sorry for that young man but I know he is now somewhere in peace and that situation is something he doesnt have to live with.

Now @ #1…dont ever be ashamed of the color of your SKINtone. Just because ANOTHER of the same skintone and background of yourself does something stupid does not mean in any shape or form that that person is representing who you are. Please note that this type of violence does not persist only within the BLACK community, if you do your research you will notice VIOLENCE AMONGST young to old ppl of the same race happens within EVERY CULTURE AND EVERY COUNTRY. Black are more KNOWN for it because this COUNTRY chooses to recognize BLACKS negativities rather our positives.

The best way to eliminate situations like this isnt going out to your nearest gun store to buy a GUN just to elevate violence, violence against violence is not a solution but simply a terrible WAR that will forever continue. The best way to defend yourself is to LET GOD be your defense. No man made weapon in this world will protect you from any negatives or violence. You best defense is to be FEARLESS IN GOD and with that persona and defense in GOD you are merely invincible to all enemies inclduing weapons. Trust in GOD, and continue to PRAY for all.

I live in Chicago as well. I lived on the north and west sides of the cty. There is always certain areas on the north, south, east, and west side that you don’t venture into because of ingorance like this. Its sad what happened to this young man with so much promise and with so much to offer the world. It looks like most of the kids were wearing the school’s uniform shirts - somehow they mistook him for one of the kids in involved in the gang fight or they were just being malicious and just beating other people for no apparent reason. The people videotaping this could have been calling the people, while the camera was rolling and the people driving thrpugh honking they’re horns could’ve called the police as well. This is just sad. This is one of the example of why large to small businesses will NOT open in certain neighborhoods because they’re looking at demographic to determine where the high crimes area are & those are the area they avoid opening up their business.

THIS BULL **** NEEDS TO STOP!!!

I am outraged at the random acts of violence that our children are inflicting on one another.

I am so hurt that a fine young man such as this with an amazingly bright future could be caught up and murdered by young men with misguided ideals about life.

I am sad, and I am praying for the family of this young man, who will be missed by his family in ways we can not imagine.

I am asking why did this happen?

Why are the fathers leaving their sons to become killers because they don’t see a way out?

When are the fathers going to collectively come back into the home?

Why don’t these men care about these boys?

How could these men think that these children were just a seed that needed no love, no guidance, no support, no gifts, nothing…

My heart is crying out for all the children who continue to be caught up in the wrong place violence. I’m hurt because this could have been my son. I’m hurt because this young man can no longer dream dreams. I’m hurt…

You guys have no idea. I haven’t and will not watch the video and I too vote that it should be taken down. To recognize the violence is one thing to post this sickness is another.

One thing though, Mayer Daley is way more concerned with winning the Olympic bid than protecting out youth. But even more than that… the parents are sad. They don’t parent their children and are afraid of them at this point. This childs death is proof of what the children here are capable of.

How esle can you relate to those around you that went trhough the fire or still going through the fire if you never experienece what its like?? How can you relate, how can you help??? Jesus himself went through the pain and in sheddin blood for us to know he too, even though he lived a perfect life had to experience some form of pain to relate back to what he knew we would have to eventually go through today. But also note, wheres he now..sittin on the right throne of God, ABOVE… Were we will be as well if we never give up on God or hope.

I never understood, in grade school, why watching a fight was so intriguing to some people(most, actually). And especially recording it at that. Like wtf? And this isn’t just blacks who do this, it’s kids of every race. STOP THE BULLYING! hundreds of teens commit suicided every year. It’s so sad! Accept and love one another.

R.I.P to this 16 year old. Feel so sad for his family.

Too sad. RIP Derrion. Condolenscences to his family and friends.. I ddnt watch the video, I can only imagine.
It’s a daily struggle in a lot inner cities around the world with the youth of today. And unfortunately, the senseless, mindless actions of a few overshadows the good that a lot of youths accomplish and demonises ALL children as a result. For the best part of a year, there were daily reports of stabbings and shooting in inner cities in Ldn, Manny , Bolton, Nottingham etc for some unimportant reason or no reason at all and a lot of those close to the gangs are so desensitised by it it’s scary. No fear of the police, jail ( cos chances are nothing much will happen) . The bystander culture is really worrying as well, Of course you shouldn’t attempt to be a have a go hero but turning a blind eye to me makes you complicit in a way. Things need to be done at the earliest level with cohesion between different instituions ( schools, social services, the police, local & national government and mainly the family) although I do genuinely believe that some kids are really lost causes and beyond help so their ass beleongs in prison. The judiciary system in this country needs major reform cos it’s ri-damn- diculous

My prayers in heart go out to the mother the family. Please dont lose your faith. Your precious child is in a far better place. I know you had plans for him but God has a better plan. Ok with that being said people I keep watching this it hurts my heart my soul my being as a human. How could you I keep trying to zoom in on what makes a human do what all those children were doing in watching what was going on. Where is all this evil in meaness just plan old not caring about another human life coming from. Parents we need help we are losing these children. I think maybe the ones that want to act like animals once they are drifting away fron school parents need to start turning there own kids in if they can see that they are heading down the wrong path. We need to take those monsters send them to third world countries let them eat dirt in fen for themselves bring those from the third world country over here in give them a chance to try in live the america dream because clearly we have a bunch of heartless human beings here in america. No one help that baby thats sad for america in shame on black america. We need to step up people in call a spade a spade we are losing. We need to own that. We need to have a super round table in thw WHITE HOUSE with President Obama we need a plan take back our homes our neighborhoods or streets take charge of these kids come on people we have to get it together stop looking the other way its at our front door in our homes please people no more own it. We are living in a world where people have no regard for human life. And prison doesn’t scare people anymore, just a place they can go and continue to live and complain. Its sad the way society is, and no one is willing to help anyone anymore, but I guess they fear for their own lives. And someone posted blame the parents, but parents can do all they can to raise their kids the right way, and they can still go astray, so in most cases its not on the parent. We need to get a better legal system, and stop letting people sit on death row for so long.

This was a post I found on the internet last year. It is highly applicable today, particularly to this incident because it is at the root…

“MEN WE HAVE TO TAKE CARE OF OUR BOYS!! THEY WILL NOT RUN THE STREET IF WE ARE THERE TO LOVE AND NUTURE THEM. WE ALSO HAVE TO BE THERE TO PUT A FOOT IN THERE A$$ IF THEY GET OUTTA LINE. THAT IS THE PROBLEM, NO DADS AT HOME. SO LADIES, STOP HAVING BABIES WITH LOW LIFES. QUIT GIVING YOUR BODY TO LOW LIFES JUST BECAUSE YOUR HORNY. YOU HAVE TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR OUR BOYS TO. QUIT SPOILING GROWN A$$ MEN LIKE BABIES. WHETHER IT’S YOUR SON OR YOUR MAN. AN IMMATURE MAN IS DANGEROUS, LOOK AT ALL THE BROTHAS IN PRISON. THE LAST PLACE A MATURE MAN WANTS TO BE IS IN PRISON AROUND A BUNCH OF FUNKY A$$ MEN. YES RACISM IS A PROBLEM. ALSO I REALIZE THE POWERS AT BE WANT TO ELIMINATE THE BLACK MAN. BUT THAT DOES NOT MEAN WE CAN’T TAKE CARE OF OUR BOYS. ALL MEN THAT DON’T PLAN ON TAKING CARE OF THERE CHILDREN SHOULD BE LINED UP AND SHOT. RUBBERS ARE FREE IN SOME CASES, SO THERE IS NO EXCUSE. “

I am from chicago and they say detroit and st. louis is the murder capital, but I’m here to tell you that chicago is the biggest murder capital of them all and I think it should be demolished if you ask me. We are having funerals back to back. Everyday you have to pull over to the side of the street or stop for another funeral passing buy. The police is crooked and some of the parents are crooked. A lot of parents dont care if their children stay out until 7am in the morning dealing drugs or robbing, as long as they bring home the money. Some of the parents will defend their children when they know that they are stone cold murderers. There is a church on almost every corner and a liqour store right next door. Its sad and I am very angry with this disfunctional city. I know that everyoine is not bad but you can count the ones that are not on one hand probably. Its all about violence here and most of the children are taught from toddlers to kill or be killed. There is always a parent who says” if someone looks like they will hit you then pick up something and knock their ass out, and I got your back and if the mama got something to say then I will beat that hoe down to.” This is the mentality of the some of the parents in chicago. Wrong guidance and council if you ask me. I went to elementary school and highschool here and I had to fight my way out only by self defense. You can be the quietest student and they still dont care. They will follow you home from school if you look like you dont want to fight. At the end of the day you will fight and hope that the parents are not one of the ones thats walking with their children instigating. This makes me so sick to my stomach everytime I see something like this. I cry for the innocent. You can live here and make it but you will encounter some type of problem with ignorant people at some point. You cant even go to the store without someone mean mugging you and if you think to look like you have a problem with it then there is trouble for the girls as well as the guys. The females fight like men and are in just as many gangs as the boys. Just because youre from the ghetto does not mean you have to act like it. There have been many successful people that made it here but only by the grace of God. Violence like this happens almost everyday rather its the westside, southside, eastside or northside, it happens and anyone from chicago can agree. We as a people need to change quickly because we are dying like flies.

I watched this video and I could not believe my eyes. My heart hurt for the young man and his family. He was a son, brother, and a friend. I grew up not having my mother around and my dad on drugs. I did not grow up with the latest fashions. Kicked out the foster system when I turned 18. Grew up in what many would call the projects. This did not make me want to go out and steal or hurt anyone. They are fighting for what, a street corner that will never be belong to them. I remember hearing on the radio about a letter from KKK about how they just laugh at the way our race is killing each other. There comes a time in life when you know right from wrong. You can’t blame rap music or hip hop videos. These cowards knew what they were doing was wrong. This makes me so sick……..

JUDAH

Tuesday, September 29, 2009 /

The reason why this society does not have the death penalty has nothing to do with leniency or compassion for human life. It is to feed the white man’s prison industrial complex, which is interconnected with all his other systems. Once in the prison system, that entity becomes a commodity, and essentially a slave, which is why he is relegated to a number. It’s more lucrative to keep the black man barely alive, which is why this society is inundated with anti-black male propaganda, and is why the black male is given so few opportunities. Mind you, we are in captivity, so the white man is supposed to do these things. In rulership, why would one give their enemy the opportunity to attain power and potentially overthrow him? It wouldn’t make sense. That’s how one knows that the “civil rights movement” was a facade and a smokescreen, but that’s another topic. The point is to steer the black man towards negativity, and hopefully prison, so that he can resume his role as slave. There is a serious issue when the same mentality that previous generations of blacks had is naturally imbued in children. That should show the attentive observer that this is a spiritual issue.

@MYTHOUGHTS

The root of the problem has little to do with that pro-black woman/anti-black male letter that you regurgitated. One can easily say that black men need to stop impregnating low-life black women that want to go back to being whores once the child is born. A child that may not even be the man’s that she claims it is. The issue is that black people have forsaken the laws of the Mos High, which is why the majority of these children are pure devils. As “Leon” said, these children in particular, and many of these children in general need to be put to death in public as an example to the rest, and the Bible tells us that (Deuteronomy 21:18-21, II Kings 2:23,24, Proverbs 30:11,17).

MY ROLE

Tuesday, September 29, 2009 /

My heart and prayers go out to this family as well as anyone who were affected with this tragedy. I pray they seek comfort, guidance and strength from God.

I also prayer that everyone see or hear of this story and take note…we need start reaching out to others. There are a lot of people out there hurting, misguided and loss; they don’t what to do and have nowhere to turn. So they do whatever to survive. And even if that means doing wrong, following the crowd and going against what they know is not cool…it doesn’t matter to them because it all they know. This misfortune is a reality check for all of us.

We need to stop with this “eye for an eye” mentality and start showing concern for each other. You don’t have to be a parent or a relative to make a positive affect on someone else. We never know what people are going through and just a simple prayer, greeting or being an example in standing out and doing positive can help. We can do better than this. I wish someone would encourage those children, adults and community in that area.

I think you and I largely agree, but I have not indicated partiality toward black women. I castigate them as well in the statement “just because you are horny”. I think that statement is a strong statement to the morality of women who have unprotected sex with men because they submitted to their sexual impulses. Thinking with your crotch is half headed and the women who do so are being called out with that statement. So they are not left out. In fact, they are the gatekeepers, which is why the door must be closed there.

man!! this is sooo sad and F***ed up!!!! i cried as i saw the news and saw the video because my brother got beaten to death also and as i think about this boy and his family it really really hurts!! i dont understand how people can be soo heartless and do something like this its inhumane!! i feel for the family and my heart goes out to them. the part that really bothers me is that we say things will hopefullly change and people will learn from what happened but its just going to keep happening because people dont care and will never change

I can only imagine what his family is feeling. I pray that God gives them strength and comfort them thru this painful time in their lives. This act of evilness needs to come to a stop. No one should ever die by the hands of another man. Especially by another young person’s hands over a senseless situation. We need to pray for our children’s future and pray that these younger kids gets direction from the lord. We do not need to loose focus of GOD in our lives. He should be consistently in our lives everyday! May this child rest in peace and may the lord GOD continues to watch over all those that serves him!!!

WHY? Everyone asks, why is this happening. why are so many children dying, why are so many innocent people being malled, shot down in the street or even in the privacy of their own homes, babies being killed all over everywhere that you havent heard or read about. All you have to do is read your Bible and you will see why all this is happening. satan is so busy in the lives of Our Brothers and Sisters. I am a widow of 5 and 6 grands. I am a child of God, I love the Lord with all my heart. It hearts my heart to see or hear about the death of a child . I want to grab them all and keep them safe, but thats not possible for me to do, but you can. Men and Woman, Mothers and Fathers, Grab hold to your babies be it girls, boys, nieces, nephews, all family and pray, pray, pray, pray.
Peace to you all

This is just sad……… first off the boy who got beat to death had a bright future ahead of him. His future was ruined because of a group of gangbangers who thought it was okay to beat somebody to death. What did he do to y’all??? That’s what I want to know. And why didn’t the person recording the fight drop the camera and help the boy????? He could’ve saved someone’s life! He could’ve been a hero! I’m 14 yrs old and I’ve seen people get jumped and beat up plenty of times; but not anything like this. This makes you realize that the world isn’t safe. You realize things happen to you that you never thought would happen. Now I see I have to watch my back everywhere I go because I never know what can happen when I’m not looking.
