NEWS: SPELMAN COLLEGE STUDENT SLAIN
Friday, September 4, 2009
Spelman College student Jasmine Lynn was killed by a stray bullet early Thursday while walking near Clark Atlanta University.
Although no arrests have been made, police have questioned a witness who was taken to the hospital after being chased down and beaten by bystanders who saw the shooting, according to the Atlanta Journal Constitution.
“He has some knowledge about what was going on,” Atlanta Police Chief Richard Pennington said. “We can’t say he’s the suspect. We can’t say if he was the actual triggerman. He’s a person of interest.”
Two weeks into her sophomore year, 19-year-old Lynn and some friends were walking down the street when they saw a group of men fighting. One of the men had a gun in his pants, ran around the corner and began shooting behind him.
Lynn, a 2008 graduate of Lincoln College Preparatory Academy in Kansas City, Mo., was majoring in psychology and minoring in business.

It’s so sad. Campus was so gloomy yesterday.
Our (CAU) campus police really need to step up their game. This is the second murder in the two weeks I’ve been here yet they continued to harass females, sit around, and talk instead of patrolling the area and what’s going on. Then they keep telling us not to speak to the media about it but it seems like hat’s what we’re gonna have to do in order for them to step up. There is NO EXCUSE for the Atlanta Police Department responding faster than CAU Police. Our campus is not big at all.

what do you mean “should have gone to a real university”?
Spelman is the number one historically black college in the country. It is a great school and things like this can happen anywhere. Remember the unfortunate event that took place at Virginia Tech? A prime example of senseless violence. We just all have to be aware EVERYWHERE we go. It’s crazy how this world is. Yesterday was a sad day here at Spelman.

Dag i honestly feel like crying reading this, after all these years and so many different situations going on in the news everyday about violence you would at least think that SOMEBODY would say let me be a cause instead of an effect and stop these senseless acts of immature violence, but OH NO these days people always gotta show how big they are instead of walking away from situations and the result is this right here. And another thing, am i missing something? Are guns the new way of fighting now? OMG when does it stop?!? My prayers go out to the family and friends and their tremendous loss, smh at the world…

@26 - Pierre do you mean a “real university” like Va Tech, Kent State, University of Texas at Austin, University of Iowa, University of Arizona, Appalachian School of Law,
San Diego State,University of Arkansas — and so many more - all universities where there have been senseless murders.
Spelman is a private, independent, liberal arts college for women, where more than 80% faculty hold Ph.Ds . It is one of the most prestigious historically black colleges (or is that your problem with it).
Clearly you need to spend some time at a “real” university or any university at all. Because you are lacking understanding and education.

I just hate that she had to lose her life on the way to the hospital. This young woman is from Missouri. That means that her parents never EVER got to SEE their child. By the time they would have gotten there. IMAGINE their faces. THIS has got TO STOP. It makes no sense for a HBCU University Center to have hostility and violence. At a gate, they stop you for the littlest thing, yet, guns can still be brought onto these campuses. It is a shame. RIP Jasmine….young flower lost because of foolishness.

Why cant somebody from the Atlanta University buy up the ghetto that surrounds it and make it a parking lot. I know robberies were going on around Georgia State, but robberies have been going on around Clark Atlanta Univ numerous times but dont get the same media attention, probably because it happens so many times to where its not news anymore. Already know you can get shot anywhere but your chances increase in the hood and at a HBU surrounded by a ghetto.
