Officer Thomas Strain, a white police officer in the 35th District of Philadelphia, was put on desk duty this month because he came to work with cornrows. According to reports, Strain was ordered to get a haircut because the braids violated department standards yet dozens of black officers wear cornrows.
Police policy requires officers to have “clean, properly trimmed and combed hair” that doesn’t prevent them from wearing their uniform hat “in a military-manner”. Although Strain was told to get a haircut, he was not formally disciplined.
This is stupid. Mostly all black cops in Philadelphia do NOT have cornrows. The few that do make up such a small number that you never see them. This guy was not fired just told to have desk duty until he combs his hair. This is not news.

Being that it’s not a natural or common way for a white male, especially one with short hair in the first place, to style his hair I imagine he was trying to prove a point. Perhaps he wanted to see if he could get away with it, being that black officers were allowed to wear the style. On it’s face it does seem antagonistic. And I’m sure he’s aware of the organizational rules, so he must have been testing boundaries. I also think the point of the regulation lies in the word “neat” and obviously, negro hair is different from caucasian hair, so by that logic there are different standards for neatness. By our cultural standards, cornrows are neat, though we might acquiesce to mainstream America’s standards that would suggest otherwise, in general (amongst ourselves) it’s considered neat. By caucasian standards it’s not a neat or even a common way to wear your hair. Beyond that, it would just stand out which is undesirable in an organization that requires uniformity. Can he win a discrimination suit? It’s tough to say because, as the reporter mentioned, police officers are allowed to enforce stricter dress codes than other organizations.
