POLITICS: PRESIDENT OBAMA’S HEALTH CARE SPEECH TO CONGRESS + VIDEO

Thursday, September 10, 2009

President Barack Obama urged Congress to enact sweeping health care legislation on Wednesday night, declaring:

“the time for bickering is over. The time for games has passed. Now is the season for action. Now is when we must bring the best ideas of both parties together, and show the American people that we can still do what we were sent here to do. Now is the time to deliver on health care.”

During his speech, Republicans laughed when the President acknowledged that significant details still need to be worked out. Not to mention, House Minority Whip Eric Cantor was seen text messaging. In addition, South Carolina Rep. Joe Wilson yelled, “You lie!” (he later issued an apology) when the President said legislation would not include insurance coverage for illegal immigrants. The President paused briefly following the outburst, while First Lady Michelle Obama shook her head from the visitor’s gallery.

Check out more photos and video of the speech below.

According to the President, “The changes in order to protect millions of Americans who have unreliable insurance or none at all would cost about $900 billion over a decade,” less than we have spent on the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, and less than the tax cuts for the wealthiest few Americans” passed during the Bush administration. Speaking in favor of an option for the government to sell insurance in competition with private industry, the President also said he was open to alternatives that offered choices for consumers.

Much of the debate over health care has been over a government-backed public option, but President Obama said that’s not the only problem plaguing the system: “Those who do have insurance have never had less security and stability than they do today.”

Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus told Democratic colleagues Wednesday morning that he will push ahead with legislation next week — with or without Republican support — and that members of the Finance Committee should prepare for a vote on the bill within the next two weeks.

I think that the GOP and their supporters feel that this healthcare problem is just the start of a slippery slope wherein the government will start being more aware of the needs of the poor/less privileged(majority coloured people), and less aware of the middle/rich (majority white). Now some people are using this and turning it into an issue about race. Obama needs to show that his plan really is for the better FOR EVERYONE! and that means laying out more of plan, like where the money is coming from. This shouldn’t turn into a race war.

Wilson should be impeached or fired or whatever they do to losers like him.

They are spending billions of dollars on war and Sending crafts to Space but they can’t fund Healthcare..Before the War in Iraq..the Republicans knew about the Healthcare crisis in this country..it’s obvious that whether the economy was good or bad…People lacking Healthcare was never an important issue, if the government would make Healthcare reforms.. I think less people would need to receive Disability because they would have access to healthcare whether they worked or not.

The GOP are all K___members, Hatch couldn’t even hold his head up when the
President was giving him props. I would love to be a fly on the wall when they
are all together. The look on his buddies faces was like not here you asshole.
Wilson got the racism thing so bad he couldn’t even hold out for the K____rally’s
and pretty much exposed them all that’s why they are all trying to clean it up for
him. To late cat is out of the bag.

———You’re the only one on here that showed you have any common sense
———whatsoever, lol. All this nonsense about “Democrats vs. Republicans”. Two
———horns on the same devil. Either you have the money or you don’t. If you don’t,
———you purchase on credit. You purchase on credit and get plunged deeper into
———debt due to exorbitant interest rates. The same system that has shafted the
———people has shafted the government.

IF you want free healthcare go to a country who doesnt depend on the dollars!! I work in the healthcare industry specifically pharmecuticals and many dollars are made off of medications and etc. What we need to do is get the heck out of Iraq and Afghanistan and start spending the money here rebuilding OUR NATION so that people can have their jobs back, pay their mortgages and don’t lose their homes!!! When people are working they have health insurance, their spending money and life is good, when people are not working we have the situation that we are in now!! Dont get duped! Govt controlled healthcare is NOT GOOD!! The healthcare industry definitely should be regulated with specific standards but not controlled!

Obviously the objectors to the public option plan have not been faced with not having insurance and coming down with a serious illness. We are talking life and death here. Let’s hear the opinion of the people that were left homeless after the foreclosures and job losses that had to sleep in their cars. And what is the alternative that the objectors are offering besides selfishness. Anybodys situation can change at the drop of a dime. There is no security in riches. But as long as you have your health, you have the hope of starting over. Illegals should be helped until they are shipped back and increase border control to further limit them getting in.

My President is black, my lambo’s blue…nah let me stop! President Obama did an excellent job as always speaking to the American public. It annoys me how pundits like to critique his speeches and his demeanor and give him a “so called compliment” saying he looked and sounded “presidential” …hello he is the President…duh. The man graduated from Harvard… he should know how to put a sentence together. A lot of racist and prejudice people just can’t take the fact that the most powerful man of the free world is an intelligent and cool African American man. Wilson’s remark is just an example of the division in this country and how far we have to go in racial relations. As many lies that were told and truth that was withheld during the last presidency, Bush was never disrespected by his own congress while speaking. Maybe his words went through one ear and out the other. Both parties agree we need something done about healthcare, it’s too damn expensive and there are a lot of people who go without. It kills me that people are so ignorant and want to complain about the deficit and how much this plan would cost. Shit we’re already paying a whole lot as it is -the war(which was a LIE-no weapons of mass destruction) and the economy-recession(bailouts to companies/banks that were LYING to naive homeowners). Plus we already pay for medicaid and medicare which gets abused by these greedy doctors conducting unnecessary tests and doping up our seniors with drugs that’s creating more problems than from when they started. And malpractice is a mf. So if we’re gonna pay for somethin, let’s at least benefit from it. Nobody should go without medical treatment just because they can’t afford it. So those that voted for Obama-stand behind him and what he stands for. And when these other local elections come around-be just as proactive as you were Nov. ‘08!!!! Peace.
