‘ROUND THE WAY: FORMER BET EMPLOYEE SPEAKS OUT
Wednesday, September 9, 2009
We all have our opinions regarding BET (I certainly do), but one former employee of the company is shedding light on the criticisms and even justifies them.
Andreas Hale was let go as Executive Editor of Music at BET.com on Tuesday and sent an email “to friends, colleagues and those that should know” that quickly spread around the ‘net. In it, Hale explained that when he accepted the position, he needed “365 days to sleep with the enemy and infiltrate the system. One year to see if they REALLY wanted change at BET.”
Hale states that he had always been critical of BET, “but it was an opportunity I absolutely had to take.” He adds that although he was hired to bring about change, he “was systematically shut down. I wasn’t hired to make noise, I was hired to be silenced.”
Read the letter in its entirety below:
To friends, colleagues and those that should know,
As of today (September 8, 2009) I am no longer the Executive Editor of Music at BET.com.
Upon entering the position at BET I said that I needed one year to see what really went on inside the belly of the beast. I needed 365 days to sleep with the enemy and infiltrate the system. One year to see if they REALLY wanted change at BET.
As someone who has been critical of BET for many years, it surprised many that I would leave my post at HipHopDX last year to take a position at BET. But it was an opportunity I absolutely had to take. I could no longer be critical of this company without accepting the opportunity to change it when given. Although I was hired to bring about change, I was systematically shut down. I wasn’t hired to make noise, I was hired to be silenced.
The truth of the matter is that everything that you thought was wrong with BET is true.
Over the past year I’ve seen a lot to reinforce my position that BET is too far gone in the negative to turn into a positive. We have all always thought the worst, but to actually see it in action is another thing in its entirety. The unprofessionalism, the tom foolery, the favors, the misappropriation of resources, the bad ideas that reinforce negative stereotypes, the emasculation of men, the meetings that break down in full fledged cursing battles, the unpaid overtime, the tears from employees scared for their underpaid and overworked positions and ultimately the unwillingness to change are all harsh realities that I’ve witnessed firsthand.
That is not to say that there aren’t some good people who have sat in the offices of BET. Unfortunately, the good people are not in positions of power to instill any change. Instead, they work their fingers to the bone just to keep their jobs in this harsh economic climate. The other good people ran out of the door as soon as an another employment opportunity presented itself. To say BET was a revolving door would be an understatement.
I came in with a plan to provide balance and to deliver good music to the masses and help make BET relevant again – at least in the dot com world. Those attempts were shut down by out of touch executives who run a dot com but could barely turn on a computer. By those who judge their metrics by page views over absolute unique visitors (that‘s ad sales talk). By those who simply don’t understand the internet.
They brought me in because of my track record but never once took a look at my body of work. If they did, they would have known that I was the pen behind editorials such as “BET’s Coon Picnic” or were aware of the many times I have been critical of their award shows and programming. All they knew is that I played a major role in making a once unknown website into a online media outlet that surpassed theirs and they wanted a piece of the action. Too bad they never researched who I really was.
During my tenure I worked long hours and sometimes succeeded at bringing in decent content to try to reflect the change I wanted to achieve. But it wasn’t without opposition. While some interviews and content initiatives were able to make it through, many others were either shut down or met with ridicule. I offered ideas to incorporate the blog world and to spotlight new talent before MTV did. Those ideas were met with comments such as “This isn’t HipHopDX” or “You don’t know what you are talking about.”
BET is not about the quality of your work. Rather, BET is about the relationships you have with powerful people within the company. BET is not about challenging. Instead, BET is about accepting and saying “yes.” If you have known or followed me over the years, you would know that these are things that simply are not in my character and ultimately resulted in my removal.
For the artists and labels that I have worked with for years, I tried. I did whatever I could to achieve that balance many of us wanted to see happen. To the writers who wanted to writer for BET, I made an attempt but was never given a budget to work with.
Upon my arrival, I was told I would be given a staff. Not true. I had a staff of one to carry out daily operations on a website. I fought tooth and nail to accomplish the minimum (an embeddable player and a site people could navigate) and was constantly brushed off. It was a position that was set up for failure. But I endured as long as I could.
Alas, I have been removed from my position after infiltrating the system and the timing was perfect. I wasn’t let go because the site’s numbers were down. Not because I didn’t work hard. Simply because of a personality clash with an individual whose proverbial ass I didn’t kiss enough. Again, not about the work you do but about the relationships you keep and the sides you take.
I’d like to thank BET for covering the cost of my relocation to bring me to the great city of New York/New Jersey. I’d also like to thank them for putting me in close quarters with people who think like me and will hopefully work with in the near future. I’d also like to thank them for providing me enough controversial content that I observed firsthand and will make for many tales to be told.
I said it and I meant in: One year to either make changes or move on. I left HipHopDX on September 16th 2008. Today is September 8, 2009. Eight days short of a year. Most thought I wouldn’t even last that long. But in that year I’ve had my greatest fears about Black Entertainment Television affirmed.
There is so much wrong with BET that I’d rather not break it down in a single email.
It is pretty good fodder for a book don’t you think?
As of today, Andreas Hale is a free agent.
Shout out to Honey Soul Music for the info.

Hmmm……………interesting. I do wish he had given some more concrete examples of what he tried to do at BET that was met with resistance (besides trying to successfully incorporate an embeddable player on BET.com). I guess I’ll have to wait for the book. Good luck in your future endeavors Andreas.

I know Andres when he worked at HiphopDX. He’s good at what he does but this letter sounds like sour grapes. It’s interesting to note that he was FIRED. If he felt all of these things why did he not leave on his own accord?
Leaving on his own would lend a little more credibility to his argument.
But he stayed there just like the others at BET because he was collecting a check and moving along with the status quo. He was never in a position to change the content of BET.COM because they reflected the station in truth. And the station is not going to change the content as along as the subscribers don’t raise any objections to it. Many people I know are offended at the content of BET and you know what you can do then? Turn the station like I do. Andres should be like Angel and do his own Blog and then he could see how popular his ideas would be I think it would be a smash. This is what the internet is all about and given a little ambition you can change things by offering new alternatives to what’s already out there. As long as people watch Frankie and Nefe, College Hill, Tiny and Toya, 106 & Park and the BET Awards these things will continue to exist. This email Andres sent out will only hurt him in the end because it’s extremely personal to his situation and HIS frustrations at BET. And all of his frustrations could have been handled in a better way than this letter (which to me is not effective) and if he was still not satisfied he could have walked out on his own and gone and done something he really wanted to do if he was not happy with the “Changes” BET seemed interested in when they hired him. Come on dude you were the Music Editor.
I’m sorry but I just don’t feel Andre’s approach or the contradiction in the fact they he knows that dot only reflect the content it does not really stray too far from the Source. It’s next to impossible to make changes if the ones in charge don’t want them. And there are always ways to communicate things….much better then this contrary note that he sent out AFTER he was fired. Viacom is not changing because of this note. He only hurt himself. And viewers ultimately have the power to bring forth changes in content and that does not seem to be happening with the BET crowd and we can think of a few reasons why that is the case. BET is reflective of a community that is similarly lost and confused. And there are bigger issues in the Black community that what is on BET. Let’s have some perspective Andres.
Again Angel. EXCELLENT Work.
(Some people are innovative and don’t complain about lame content on old formats they make their own way)

I interviewed at BET once and I must say they are very unprofessional. I was offered the position and turned it down because of the salary.
I think he was pissed when he wrote the letter but that doesn’t make it a lie. I believe him… I don’t care enough to buy the book because we already know that BET is a Hot Mess… I still watch Frankie and Neffe and the Award shows… What can I say other then sometimes I like the watch smut TV that is called BET…

I applaud him for the respectful manner in which he expressed his sentiments regarding his disdain for bet. And while, I have no information in regards to the inner working of BET it is quite obvious on that outside that BET is cheap and degrading one-sided representation of black people as a whole. I rarely watch BET because there is rarely anything positive or worthwhile watching on the station. Additionally, they continue to perpetuate the negative stereotypes that SOME African Americans have sought to bury for quite sometime. I’d also like to commend Concreteloop for not advertising that Neffe and Frankie buffonery that claims to be about “CHANGE”. I’m glad someone is putting morals before compensation.

Okay… only thing left out was an attachement of his resume. like most of you said…no surprise. You can look at BET’s line up of their”new shows” and see what they are about:
Frankie and Neffe…WHY and what purpose?
Wendy Williams…Why?????
Tiny and Toya…Why and what purpose? Even the one show College Hill that you would think would be positive was a mess. I partof one season of that when they were in St. Thomas, VI and was disgusted. I prefer TV One. I can see all the reuns I want of good old tv shows and great interviews, great black movies I had not seen before. I like their special “UNSUNG”. BET has a long way to go still.

BET is a complete mess. I mean, they’ve always been a mess, but at this point it has become evident that the direction the network is going in, is all wrong. They need someone over there, who actually cares. Debra and friends, are making millions so they don’t even too much care what “we” think or anyone else. BET is the cheapest station on television. They have no major stars on their shows, because they are too cheap,so they depreciate and degrade the black viewing audience by giving them low budget shows with B-LEVEL people in them like Tiny & Toya,a crackhead Frankie and Wendy ,a low-budget Oprah ,who can barely do her show because her cheap studio is infested with flies.BET executives should be ashamed of themselves,my shoes cost more than what they spend on their low budget shows.

Oprah will not have on Andreas, some washed up dot Music Editor from BET on her show. It’s called changing the station and raising your family.
BET while offensive to most is not something you have to watch. And Andreas needs to move on and learn to be more of a professional because this note is anything BUT.
Stop looking to BET to have some self esteem that should come from within. And if enough self respecting people stop tuning in BET would change.
You can’t argue about something and watch it like a Zombie.
Black youth are not empowered enough as a group and until that happens on important issues like education and political power you will never see yourself reflected in a true sense. What you will have are these gross mischaracterizations that BET shows with some regularity and “reverence”.

anyway, the man tried and what he did needed to be done so that it could be “proven”. not intended to ofset anyone but the younger people here arent really aware of what BET used to be. thats what so upsetting to the older people (im 30).
its disgusting and even though i LOVE the game, i dont even think id want to give them the ratings theyve (obviously) sold their souls for.
but no one has morals anymore. everything is right and ok. theyve bought into the hype. and anyone who doesnt think satan is using music to build his kingdom, you are sadly mistaken. everything in our world has a negative and a positive to it and music is definitely one of them.

BET has been discredited as a cable station for a long time now.Their shows cost so little to make, and the quality is so poor, that you could buy a camcorder and make a better show. And it looks like they don`t put any money or effort into making their shows, they just make a cheap copy of whatever is a hit on MTV,that`s how former BET owner Bob Johnson and executive Barbara Lee got so rich, the millions of dollars that should have been spent on making good quality shows went to Johnson and Lee`s paychecks and the little bit of money left over went to the making of these cheap shows,It`s despicable !

He should’ve stayed on and worked his way up until he was in a position to make some real change there. The reason the station is the way it is is because those old people never leave and if they do they hire the “yes” men to replace them. The revolving door has to slow down or the station will never change. BET seems like a lost cause. They will never change until they are challenged by a rival station or until a few people within the organization make the change.

why is it everytime there’s a post about BET everybody comes on here and post all these negative comments about how HORRIBLE the channel is? I’ve always watched BET and I don’t see a problem with it it’s no different than any other network, if u believe so can u give me some type of example bc maybe i’m just looking over it since I don’t invest that much of my time worry about what’s on it, if I want to watch what’s on I watch it if I don’t I CHANGE THE CHANNEL.
And i’m gonna have to agree with some of the other people he seems more hurt about not working there anymore than anything in this letter. He keeps saying he wanted to change this and change that and he knew he had to kiss someone ass to do it but refused to so he wasn’t too serious about the change bc if he was he would’ve done what needed to be done got in good with the people and accomplish what he wanted. It does no good to just quit and complain.

BET has been in the dumpster since Debra Lee started and AJ and Free left. Viacom needs to replace Debra Lee. They have stopped with the really explicit videos (Uncut) and started with the coonery.

Very true. I have felt this way about BET for a long while now, years and years wondering if they will change their ways. I remember they had a late night show abut poetry, or even showing quality music from quality artist. Education shows cancelled, good music gone, what replaces this— Sad reality shows, music from kids who are in it to make a quick million. Tell me when was the last time you saw a song from Prince, Talib, The roots..and even if you did they cut the video half way into it.
Black Exploitation Television needs a change. In a time where we have an educated president..and he’s black, how is it so hard to have programming that can help us grow as a community. Maybe its not so much BET that is the problem but the people that they hire that just do as they are told because it pays the bills. Specking from real experiences, i’ve had a number of jobs which I left because I refused to sell-out to something I don’t believe in, and in the end it has made be a stronger person and will continue to do so.

Why do it always take for a person to get fired from BET before they put them on blast? For him to work there knowing that BET isn’t right makes him just as gulity as BET. Basically, if he was still working there, he would still be silent. SMH.

BET does not represent me, no television does. I watch what I enjoy watching. After something becomes less enjoyable, I change the channel. PEOPLE, CHANGE THE CHANNEL! STOP BUYING IT! ACTIONS, speak a hell of a lot LOUDER THAN WORDS! One thing that frustrates the hell out of me is a black person complaining about something that affects them when all they have to do is change it and get sign on from others as positive as they are. People, stop the negativity and start creating what you enjoy watching by not tunning in to bullshit. It is that simple. Didn’t you know. Don’t be afraid to be the first!

I dont really think too many people watch BET enymore simply because its meant for the 250k a year class. Idk wtf’s up with them not playin music videos but showing 12 episodes of “The Game,” a day! Dood had a god point about not recognizing new talent because a Network called Black Entertainment doesn’t even like our music! o except for beyonce and there “work out music” lol

@1 I AGREE
We already knew BET was very ignorant I mean take a look at their T.V. Shows you can tell by that. BET is a channel I do not watch and I am a African American. But one thing I’ve learned you can’t help your own color (BECAUSE HALF OF THE TIMES THEY THE ONES WHO DO YOU IN YOUR OWN COLOR) some people__(AFRICAN AMERICANS) claim they watch BET just because it’s a black owned company or whatever but I don’t look at that I look at what Channels have to offer and BET don’t offer anything but ignoracy and stupidiness and who have time to sit and watch shows that don’t even make sense sometimes I would tune in to some of their shows just too get a oomplete good laugh lol lol lol. I gave up on BET a long time ago and it was official after the last BET Awards after I saw how they was so tasteless I mean I was so not satisified at that BET Award show how they was giving the LifeTime Achievement Award to a group who received one a few years back, How they was making fun of Michael Jackson knowing the man is already dead and knowing some of his family and friends was out there in the audience that didn’t mean anything to any of them especially Jaime Foxx how he acknowledge publically on the show that Michael had 3 different kind of noses I mean I been gave up on BET I no longer watch that shit and loosing AJ and Free was the worst thing BET could have ever done because the two ignorant people they have now on 106 is so shameful and stupid.I said long ago BET should be canceled OR either BET needs to be cleaned up, the employees they have behind the scene and in front of the scene need to be discontinue and they need new people LIKE FOR REAL FOR REAL AND THAT SPICK ROCSI DON’T NOBODY LIKE HER WHAT IS SHE EVEN DOING ON BET SHE NEED TO BE ON THE LATINO CHANNEL BET HOSTS LIKE DANELLA AND ALISHA RENEE BET DON’T EVEN GIVE THEIR OWN COLORED NEW TALENT A CHANCE AT 106 & PARK THOSE TWO LADIES DANELLA AND ALISHA RENEE THEY ACTUALLY HAVE T.V. PERSONALITY TALENT BUT THAT ROCSI HER EARS SO BIG SHE’S LOOKING LIKE DUMBO SHE’S LOOKING LIKE SHE BELIEVE SHE CAN FLY I MEAN COME ON SHE GOT TO GO. HALF OF THE BET EMPLOYEES ON CAMERA AND OFF THE CAMERA GOTS TO GO AND I’M JUST KEEPING IT 100

BET in the big picture is an “entertainment” Network.
Bob Johnson sold BET to Viacom for profit and his not looked back since. I know his daughter was not watching BET when he owned it.
Bob Johnson said he “NEVER wanted to he the Vanguard of Black Culture.”
And you know what? I believe him because BET when he sold it was not much better than it is today and that was never in his job description (making PC programs for Black people). He is a business man. And exploitation is exportation not matter what color the person is. It’s just business.
Remember some Africans sold others into slavery same thing here with BET.
You people are very naive if you think this is not about MONEY. BET and Hollywood sell to you these images and it’s interesting to note that these one dimensional stereotypes have not changed over the years.
Have you ever noticed the types of movies that always play on BET? Baby Boy, Soul Plane, Menace II Society…etc. It’s a joke and who are the biggest musical Stars???…. Soulja Boy, Lil Wayne, Monique, etc…..See a Trend people.
You don’t see Jill Scott, Maxwell ,Lauryn Hill, Bob Marley, Marvin Gaye or Nina Simmone on constant replay on BET because stereotypes SELL. And just read some of the comments on CL any day real issues pop up like Domestic Abuse and you will see what the REAL problems are. It’s not BET people it’s a mentality and as long as people watch and behave like Frankie, Toya, Lil Wayne, Chris Brown and the College Hill cast BET will keep showing it.
When we wake up, turn the TV off, and come together as a community and empower ourselves and demand better values reflected (and projected) in the things we watch (and how we live) things will never CHANGE.
And excuse me if I dismiss Andreas Hale because he is no martyr for conscience thought he was happy and content working for BET until he was FIRED. Trust that “letter” is more about him than his concerns about BET. Trust.
The actual power is within the viewers who empower others to define YOUR tastes and images you are willing to accept as entertaining. So don’t cry about Debra Lee if you make Toya and Tina debut to high numbers…no blame yourselves.
And stop worrying about TV shows and do something with your lives.

I knew B.E.T was bullshit from the jump. That little executive whoever she is whack too…the little light skin chick. BET is always five days late on news…and is on sided. I stop going to the website and it gives me even more reasons not to even bother going to the site. Coonery at its best…look at Keyshia Cole. You saw the good and the bad in that show. But instead of keeping Keyshia Cole they have the bullshit that is Frankie and Neffie. The same with Tiny and Toya. Who can really learn from these chicks. One is a washed up groupie who got pregnant, the other isn’t even married but has all these damn kids. I mean what goals are they accomplishing. That is nothing but bullshit. They have yet to have a good reality show that actually serves a purpose. Its crap all around.

To all the folks on here getting their short in a bunch over this disgruntled former employee’s letter, either have never worked for a company or complete idiots. The whole time I am reading the letter I am saying to myself, “Ok, typical job.” Can someone tell me how is BET different from any other organization? Everything that is outlined in that letter is what goes on in jobs every day. I am not a corporation apologist by any means but everyone believes he or she is overworked and underpaid. I worked at hedge funds my whole life, made six figure salaries with 40 to 50 percent bonuses every year (except last year) and I still believe I am underpaid for work and hours I put in. Frankly, if you compared the hours I work against my salary, I am barely exceeding minimum wage. The fact of the matter is the only way one can ever be satisfied with their job is if they work for themselves.
So my advice to this fellow is start your own business and implement your innovative ideas and compete against BET.

BET is absolute GARBAGE ie: “The Franky and Neffe Show”
TV One is cool but BET needs some real heavy competition. The only way another network will ever be able to directly and successfully compete with BET is to aggressively go after their young high school and college aged audience. Thats the market that keeps BET running. A competely tweaked and totally upgraded version of MTV, complete with high quality original programming, brand new hot talent, and a wider selection of music targeted towards white and minority youths is the ONLY answer to BET. Unless we all stop tuning and demand that they change on their own.

Judah is back!!
Judah I’m sure you think BET rules the world but this is really about business protocol.
You have to give and take if you want to effect change or get people to accept your way of thinking. I think this is a simple case of Andreas Hale not going about it in the right way. He also seemed to be more status quo than he may want to admit. This really sounds like Sour Grapes. BET is about Money and Andreas Hale more than understood that. And that is why Tyler Perry is making money he meets a need and he found a market. I sure don’t like his movies but there is clearly an audience that does.
This does not suggest that we should be defeatist. There are other ways to bring about change but maybe working in BET.COM is not the way to change things because again the dot reflects the Station and the Station is where the Change has to come. And as a Music Editor what changes did he really think he was going to bring? Lil Wayne is big in the Station and he will be big on the Blog same with Soulja Boy…LOL
I just find Andreas Hale a bit pedestrian, comical and self absorbed. Kinda like you Judah…LOL

Man I couldn’t agree more with this guy, BET has sold their soul to devil and there is no chance for repent. I have also experienced their poor work first-hand being a member of a season of College Hill I have watched BET virtually ruin young African-American lives with the promise of oppurtunities which never happen, once they have used you for all they can that’s it you are no longer of any importance to their company. Luckily I had the forsight to place myself in a position to avoid me having to relay on them, however many others were not so lucky as much as it hurts me to say I have a strong feeling that Black Entertainment Television is not in the best interest of Black people at all, any youth looking to break in you are much into the industry you are much better going with MTV.

You missed me? I know you did. Let me help you understand something. BET is a corporation. It is itself run by a parent corporation, which is in turn run by an umbrella entity, so on and so forth. I do not think that BET runs the world, nor are you mentally capable of quantifying what I think, because this issue is not about BET, it is about the Machine. Idealists are emotionally driven, and therefore do not and cannot understand anything because they cannot comprehend the basic dynamics of how this society is run. BET is a front organization of the division of the machine that presides over control of the people through the establishment of pop culture. It’s just a leg on the centipede. The black woman that runs BET controls nothing. She is a figurehead to promote black female superiority for idiots like yourself to lap up like a thirsty mutt, lol. Simpletons like this man that get frustrated that they cannot “change the world with love” don’t deserve the attention that he lusts after.

I agree with you! Now look at that. Miracles do happen.
This is much larger than BET and I have said that a few times in multiple posts.
I’m also unimpressed with Debra Lee. And yes she is a symbolic puppet. My wish is that more people understand that this is well beyond what BET shows and more of a statement on the deficiencies in Black Culture. People assume when they see BET that they must support it or accept the pathetic “idols” and “values” that are promoted by this station.
I hope more people wake up to what is really going on and empower themselves and stop being so bamboozled. Judah you should also try and be more helpful and less insulting. You may comprehend things and be aware of situations or themes but you should also use that awareness more constructively rather than attempting to cut down people who may not understand or agree with your point of view. Just a suggestion. And you really have a problem with women and I just don’t get that.

Judah, this time you’re a little off intellectually. Viacom is the parent and the entity of BET foremost. It spun off from CBS and created an entirely new corporation owned by another gorup of shareholders. NOW! Idealista are not unaware of the machine and understand it completely. Their thoughts are not emotionally driven, they are very much politically driven as the machine–liberals vs conservatives as one example, another grassroots vs government. They compete with the machine as an opposing view. Your last message on the other hand was very emotional as you tried to break Young Money and you came off spewing unintelligible babble, Her - Maphrodite! P.S. Judah. BET is not a front for the machine. The machine never needed a front. It has perpetuated its nonsense and continues, before BET and now after. BET had a target audience that made it money and VIABLECOM came and conquered–or should I say coughed up billions because it was an available, sound investment and basically motor mouth (Bill Cosby) couldn’t afford it. . .LOL! That was a joke! as I grow deeper into digression. . .Besides, what is this reliance on BET. Viacom also owns MTV that makes white guys act digusting, white girls act like whores (thats been going on forever in soaps), and overall depict whites as drug addicts and alcholics. Now all we have left are these emotional idealists building organizations to change policies that will help build alternative media. Those damned hippies!

VISIT BLACKWORLDORDER.COM…. THEY SPEAK THE TRUTH.
YES MTV HAD WHORES AND B.S. ALL OVER THEIR CHANNEL, BUT THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BET AND MTV IS THAT MTV HAS A BALANCE. BET SHOWS NOTHING BUT SEX. ALL OF THESE YOUNG GIRL ARTISTS FEATURED ON BET SELL SEX. EVEN WHEN THEY ARE UNDERAGE.
CIARA - CAME OUT AT 17 OR 18 TALKING ABOUT HER GOODIES…
RHIANNA - 17 YEARS OLD SHE CAME OUT LOOKIN LIKE A STRIPPER HALF NAKED
BEYONCE- SHE IS A LEGEND AND I LOVE HER, ONE OF THE MOST TALENTED… BUT SHE DANCES AROUND IN A LEOTARD
KERI HILSON - SHE COMES OUT TALKIN ABOUT HOW A GUY IS TURNING HER ON…
ELECTRIK RED- TALKIN ABOUT HOW THEY’RE STUFF IS SO GOOD.
AND ALL OF THESE LADIES CATER TO YOUR KIDS… THERE ARE NO ROLE MODELS FOR YOUNG BLACK GIRLS… AND WHEN THERE IS ONE LIKE ESTELLE, OR JORDIN SPARKS, THEY DONT PROMOTE THEM… DO YALL REALLY THINK BET WILL EVER PLAY A PRICSILLA REANA VIDEO.. OFCOURSE NOT.. SHE NOT SELLING SEX IN A BATHING SUIT SHOWIN HER ASS… THEY’RE NOT GOING TO PROMOTE QUEEN LATIFAH’S ALBUM THATS OUT… BET COMPLETELY SHUNNED QUEEN LATIFAH UNTIL SHE GOT HER OSCAR NOD FOR CHICAGO… NOW THEY’RE ON HER JOCK,,, BUT THEY WONT EVER PUT HER VIDEO ON 106 EVEN THOUGH THEY CONTROL THE COUNTDOWN…. THEY MIGHT PREMIER IT BUT YOU WONT SEE IT AGAIN….
WHERE AS MTV HAS FEMALE ARTIST TO BALANCE IT OUT… SO YEAH ITS OK FOR MTV TO PLAY RHIANNA, OR CIARA LOVE SEX AND MAGIC OR A BRITNEY SPEARS, OR LADY GAGA…. BECAUSE RIGHT AFTER THAT THEY’LL PLAY A TAYLOR SWIFT SONG… OR PINK, OR ADELE, OR ESTELLE OR JORDIN SPARKS…. BET DOESNT HAVE ANYTHING TO BALANCE OUT ALL OF THE SEX ISH THEY PUT ON….
WITH THE GUYS… OUR KIDS HAVE NO ROLE MODELS EITHER…. EVERYONE IS TALKIN ABOUT SEX…
TREY SONGS- HE’S THE NEW R. KELLY, OVERLY SEXUALIZED
PRETTY RICKY- THEY GRINDIN ON STAGE TO SONGS LIKE TIPSY
JAMIE FOXX- HE HAS 10 YEAR OLDS SINGING BLAME IT ON THE ALCOHOL
LIL WAYNE- I WISH I COULD F*** EVERY GIRL IN THE WORLD…. PERFECT
EXAMPLE WAS AT THE BET AWARDS WHEN ALL THOSE LITTLE GIRLS CAME OUT ON STAGE SINGING THE SONG WITH HIM…. THAT WAS SOME PEDOPHILE ISH GOIN ON.
TPAIN— MORE ALCOHOL AND SEX TALK
THE DREAM- ALL OF HIS SONGS ARE ABOUT SEX, NEED I SAY MORE
SOULJAH BOY- TAKING NAKED PIX OF HIMSELF WITH A HARD ON
THESE ARE ALL ARTISTS THAT YOUR 12 YEAR OLD IS LISTENING TO, THIS IS WHAT IS ON THEIR IPOD…. SO WHEN YOU FIND OUT YOUR 13 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER IS HAVING SEX AND SHE’S POSTING NAKED PIX OF HERSELF ON MYSPACE, ITS NOT ONLY THE PARENTS FAULT ITS ALSO BET’S FAULT… OFCOURSE KIDS WANT TO SEE PEOPLE WHO LOOK LIKE THEM ON TV, AND THAT THE ONLY CHANNEL WHERE YOU CAN SEE THAT….
WHERE AS MTV HAS THE JONAS BROTHERS, NICKELBACK, COLBY ADONIS TO BALANCE THINGS OUT…
SO ITS DIFFERENT WHEN THE ONLY MAINSTREAM BLACK CHANNEL THAT WE HAVE SHOWS NOTHING BUT SEX AND VIOLENCE… ITS DUMBING US DOWN… WHITE PEOLPLE HAVE PLENTY TO CHOOSE FROM WHEN IT COMES TO PROGRAMMING. BET IS ONE OF TWO CHANNELS WHERE YOU CAN SEE YOURSELF 24 HOURS A DAY… TVONE IS GETTING THERE, BUT LET BE HONEST, THEIR STILL IN THEIR INFANT STAGE, AND FROM WHAT I HEAR, THE ONLY THING KEEPING THAT CHANNEL ALIVE IS THE MARTIN SHOW RERUNS WHICH IS THE HIGHEST RATED SHOW ON THEIR CHANNEL…. AND IF BOB JOHNSON SIGNS THIS NEW DEAL TO START THIS NEW NETWORK, TVONE WILL EVENTUALLY HAVE TO SHUT DOWN…
DO YOU REALLY THINK THAT 106 AND PARK IS REAL… THEY DONT COUNT VOTES… STEPHEN HILL DECIDES WHOSE VIDEOS GET PLAYED AND FOR HOW LONG… THINK ABOUT IT…. HOW ARE YOU GOING TO VOTE FOR TOMORROW’S SHOW WHEN IT WAS TAPED TODAY… THE SAME 10 VIDEOS ARE REPLAYED EVERYDAY… BRAINWASHING US…. OF COURSE ITS EASY TO SAY CHANGE THE CHANNEL BUT TELL THAT TO A 12 YEAR OLD WHO COMES HOME FROM SCHOOL AT 3:00 AND HIS PARENTS ARE AT WORK AND DONT GET HOME UNTIL 8:00PM… WHAT DO YOU THINK THESE KIDS ARE GOING TO WATCH.. OPRAH???? NO, THEY WANT TO SEE LITTLE WAYNE AND THEY WANT TO DO THE STANKY LEG… THEY THINK IT OK TO BE GHETTO LIKE FRANKIE AND NEFFIE… THEY THINK ITS ALRIGHT TO SPEAK IMPROPER ENGLISH LIKE TINY AND TOYA….
SOME OF THESE SHOWS DO HELP OUT THE PEOPLE WHO MIGHT BE IN THE SAME SITUATION SO IM NOT DISSING THESE SHOWS. HEY, I WATCH THEM TOO, BUT ATLEAST WHEN BOB JOHNSON WAS THERE, THERE WAS SOMEWHAT OF A BALANCE… BOB JOHNSON WOULD HAVE PLAYED A LEDISI SONG, OR A KARINA PAISON. CAN YOU IMAGINE A YOUNG ERYKAH BADU TRYING TO GET ON TO BET TODAY.. I DONT THINK SO… IF YOU’RE NOT KERI HILSON TALKING ABOUT “YOU KNOW JUST HOW I LIKE IT YOU’RE TURNING ME ON….’ THEN YOU’RE GETTING TURNED AWAY…..

There is truly no reason to “FIX” BET when people who really care about how African Americans are portrayed are not at the helm. If Oprah has a channel then why can’t some of our moguls create a channel that can change the game?
Lastly, I have never understood how the BET Awards can honor greats and humanitarians but turn around show booty shaking and vulgar lyrics in the same breath? No other show does that but the BET Awards. *SMH & getting of soap box*

Viacom just cares about ratings… and i agree when you say moguls should start their own channels… but what you fail to realize is that they have tried… and its not easy… i remember when Bill Cosby tried to buy CBS…. three jewish banks came together and outbid him for the channel… not because they wanted it, but because they didnt want a black man to own such a big company… when have you ever heard of a bank buying a network… never…. many have tried but all of them fail….

yeah yeah yeah believe me everybody that has been fired will have something bad to say about the firing employer too. Yo know if you had quit six months ago and sent out this email it would be more believable. But honestly yeah we all know what bet is all about,we see it on tv everyday and honestly u know the drill goes money controls the buisness and if showing ass and potraying black people as dumbasses bring in the money then the moneys gots to flow in and honestly mr andreas was part of that for the last year. And how convenient you are now a free agent, i see u are about getting your money too!!!!!!!!!!!. Like i was telling my friend yesterday i m just happy that we have people like president Obama that paint a different picture for us black people.

—–I don’t know if we agree. I think you think we agree, lol. I have an extremely hard
—–time taking you seriously in regards to your stance on the “deficiencies in black
—–culture”, when you were extolling Jay-Z and his new album a few weeks ago like
—–you’re on his payroll. He’s one of the top witches being used in pop culture to
—–bring the masses closer to Satan. So essentially, you’re a hypocrite. Let me also
—–say that instead of you attempting to speak as if you’re “educated”, when you’ve
—–never shown that you’re aware what the word means, you should addressed me
—–in a mannerly fashion. That way I wouldn’t have to make you understand how silly
—–and simple you are representing yourself. From the first comment you’ve ever
—–directed towards me, you attempted to act as if you were going to “put a black
—–man in his place”, lmao. Lastly, let me say, I don’t have a problem with the
—–sisters. The sisters have a problem with order, and when you have a cog that
—–disdains it’s role in the machine, it must be replaced with a newer, better cog. It’s
—–not even about ya’ll, it’s more about the black man gettting the understanding of
—–who he is and what he’s supposed to do.

Some of yall need to STFU becuz when that white broad wrote the Devil wears Prada book it was okay. She wrote it based of her experience working with some hateful broad in the fashion industry. AND matter in fact it turned into a movie. Stop letting jealousy corrupt ur thoughts. Stay focused on the bigger picture. Blacks need to start standing up about what is infiltrated in their communities via the media. Stop worryin about his book for profit and start brainstorming how to stop the bafoonery of the media. It’s okay for a white man to write a tell-all book but yall pot of crabs stay trying to keep somebody from speaking truth. Oh I forgot…”blacks are afraid of books”. U don’t even know if he would give a percentage to charity for black communication/media students, etc. THINK and stop HATIN

It seems like some of ya’ll on here are mad about what he said becuz u don’t want ur favorite BET show to get cancelled. He has a right to voice his opinion. Why should he just hang his head low and walk out the door? If nobody ever stood up/spoke up for stuff our black asses wouldn’t even be on tv or doing half the stuff we are allowed to do in this country today. As soon as someone stand up, yall black asses want to shut them down. U worst than the white man. But then u complain about BET behind the safety of ur computer screens. This shit is not hurting him u dumb assess, it’s hurting u believe it or not. I bet if Obama said that shit u be all onboard. Yeah I said it!

What happened to the the days of Video Soul w/Donnie Simpson, Teen Summit, Live in L.A. w/Tanya Hart, Yolanda Gaskin’s show (forgot the name), etc. Those were the good ole days of BET. I haven’t watched BET in decades. It went downhill after the 80’s. I finally broke down and watched the 2009 BET Awards only because of the “supposed” Mijac tribute. Let’s just say after watching that debacle, it only reiterated my need to never watch BET again.

—–I never said that BET was a front for the Machine. If you’re going to try to nitpick,
—–at least read my comment properly. I said it is a front FOR THE DIVISION of the
—–machine involved with pop culture. I use that term “Machine” as a metaphor for
—–the process of enacting the doctrines of Satan. I don’t give BET that much credit
—–to be “THE front” for the machine. Let me help you out, because you are trying to
—–come off as deep and intelligent, and you obviously need a lot of help lol.
—–Satan works through perceived options. This is why he presents you with rich vs.
—–poor, conservative vs. liberal, man vs. woman, etc. Liberal movements and
—–organizations are funded by the elite, and their leaders are coached on how to
—–bring the people more in league with the overall goal, i.e. MLK, Gandhi, etc. In
—–philosophical terms, this doctrine is known as the “Hegelian Dialectic”. It’s the
—–same principle that master masons call “equilibrium” or occultists call “as above/
—–so below”. The notion that you treat the simple masses as children and make
—–them think that they have a mind of their own, when they really don’t. This will
—–make them easier to train and pervert.
—–I think you were al little offended by my comment to Young Funny because you’re
—–another deluded black female feminist robot, lol. Instead of some of you black
—–women trying to attack every black man with a brain to show how educated you
—–think you are, why don’t you read and comprehend first. As an example of how
—–fruitlessly argumentative you are, you laid out the same corporate scheme I laid
—–out in regards to BET’s parent organizations, but I guess you had to show you
—–knew something lmao. If we really want to go there, all these companies are
—–owned by Lloyd’s of London, who as an entity is operated by the Crown, or the
—–13 ruling families. Now let me “digress”, lol. Politics is nothing but theatre, which
—–is why politicians are actors. When they don’t read their lines properly, you are
—–cut from the production. You are not going to change a damn thing, lmao. These
—–people are dealing with trillions on the table. Idealists are the fools that are sent
—–out to keep the people docile and non-rebellious while the elite enact their
—–agendas.

@Judah, . . .and that is why you take so much time DEFENDING AND PROVING yourself too me and all the other so-called feminist, black male bashers, and robots. Certainly, it isn’t because you’re teaching us anything. All you’ve done is twist your words to distract us from your short-comings and quoted a few archaic wall scratchings. Noone is going to sign on to this BS because we have chosen to believe our own truths from countless histories contrary to what you’ve prescribed to: no lack of intelligence there, only choices. You want me to tell you that you are a black insecure, cripple-minded male who hides behind a blog. Wait, is this Paul Mooney in disguise? LOL, LMAO, ROFLMAO, what is that? Surely my son. As a black woman, I will always be your mother and have power over your destiny. My child, I will let you know when to be a man and when you should silence yourself. Right now, you need to be assertive and less aggressive, if you truly wish to teach. Otherwise, your opinions (no significant truths) are your own and will not be forced down my throat or any other bloggers here.
Go now and do your work as I’ve seen you do it best. Stop getting distracted when you are confronted with opposing views and believe that united we stand.

I’m sure he’s speaking the truth on most, if not all, of the issues. That being said, I bet Debra Lee’s annual salary that he got fired for his lack of business acumen, not because he wanted to make change.
Anybody making a dollar on the web knows that page views are more important than unique visitors. That’s not ad alses talk, that’s real money talk.
He sounds like someone who didn’t deserve a staff and probably was in over his head at the gig.

At the end of the day BET’s main goal is to make a profit. They don’t give a flying F**k about you or anyone else as long as there is money comming in.
Honestly, why should they? If people are dumb enough to watch the crap they put out there then……….hey, that’s their problem.
If Walmart had a hardcore porn section would you stop shopping there? Maybe some would, but most wouldn’t ….that’s society.
I wasn’t allowed to watch BET growing up, I’m 19 now and I still choose not to watch it. It’s really that simple. Every time you watch a program on BET you’re endorsing them. Don’t watch their programs. If you have a kids, block the channel.
“Supply and Demand”…as long as people keep watching…………

Who doesn’t know this, BET is a freaking joke and has no form of quality programming. When we as black people have been given the opportunity to make a difference we should grasp it and make the best of it. There are no positive shows depicted on BET. While I understand we are in a period of reality tv, and people love drama, they could at least include some quality shows which they have chosen not to do at all. When BET reaches complete failure, and a white person has ownership, they will then realize their failures.

BET is a horrible network I only watch them for their June award show (which seems like its a tribute to Beyonce every year now) and after what I saw they allowed at this year’s show and that disgrace of a tribute to MJ I’m finished!
TV One is where it’s at!!!
And Bravo, Lifetime, Oxygen, and MTV ….lol why I play so much

This same thing goes on at an HBCU I once worked for. You can work your butt off and no one cares. But, if you kiss the administration’s behind and don’t do any work you will get a raise. Many people are resistant to change they do not understand nor comprehend, whether they have an MBA or PhD. It doesn’t matter how nice you say it or explain it. BET, by the content they repeatedly showcase is not interested in true growth or uplifting material they are interested in catering to any population that will provide income. “Love of money is the root of all evil”.

BET’s Debra Lee Respondes to Disgruntled Employee « The Fab Empire - DC Fab

[...] In his email he stated: Over the past year I’ve seen a lot to reinforce my position that BET is too far gone in the negative to turn into a positive.
