‘ROUND THE WAY: MO’NIQUE SPEAKS WITH W MAG ABOUT HER ROLE IN ‘PRECIOUS’

Mo’Nique has been the talk of the film festival for months now for her STAND-OUT role in the upcoming dramatic film, PRECIOUS. She recently sat down with W Magazine and spoke about the film and the audience reaction to it.

ON WHAT IT MEANS TO THE FILM THAT OPRAH WINFREY SIGNED ON AS EXECUTIVE PRODUCER… “What do you think it means when the person under God says the movie is good? Oprah might be right there with the Lord! She done gave the whole world free chicken! That’s godly, baby. That’s called a miracle. So what does it mean when Oprah Winfrey says, ‘This is good’? Then the world – not just America, the world – says, ‘It’s good.’”

ON WATCHING A SCREENING OF PRECIOUS ALONGSIDE THE “TINSELTOWN ELITE” AT THE SUNDANCE FILM FESTIVAL…“None of those people looked like us. And it was mind-blowing when it was over, to have white men in their 60s coming up to us, crying. It killed the myth. It killed the myth that a white man couldn’t possibly enjoy two big black women onscreen.”

ON HOW BEING SEXUALLY ABUSED BY HER OLDER BROTHER HELPED PREPARE HER FOR THE ROLE OF THE MONSTROUS MOTHER IN PRECIOUS … “Lee [Daniels, director] said, ‘When I say action, I need you to be a monster.’ I was molested by my oldest brother, who was a monster to me. So to get into the mind of that woman, I remembered that monster.”

ON RECENTLY CONFRONTING HER BROTHER AND FORGIVING HIM, DESPITE HIS NEVER FULLY ACKNOWLEDGING HIS GUILT… “I’ve got to. I can’t walk around with that. If I don’t forgive him, I’ll be the victim for the rest of my life, and I don’t choose to be that.

Precious, will open nationally on November 6th in limited theaters. Check out the trailer here. Also, look out for Mo’Nique on BET later this year. She has a late night talk show coming up.

  4. Mr. FAMU

If Monique and Gabriel don’t win Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress at the Oscars it’s going to be hell to pay. The Academy Awards love giving black actors awards for crap but they better come with it on this film!

    WE LOVE YOU MONIQUE!

And yes Oprah is the closest thing to God we have on this earth. Her spirit is so pure!

  5. Coffeebrown

Excited to see this movie; the book was interesting.

  6. ME MYSELF & I

The buzz has been on Monique since back in the spring. The buzz is she is so good that she may get an Oscar nomination for best supporting actress.

  11. JstBReal

I agree that this movie is definitely Oscar-worthy on many levels. Ive liked Monique since her days on The Parkers and her hosting Apollo. Glad to see a natural, real female representing in the big media.

  12. Kanye West Is A HATER!!!

I can’t wait 4 this movie and “Good Hair” to come out.

  13. Andre Le Dale

Mo’nique shouldn’t get to comfortable hosting a BET show late night, because this movie is about get her to superstardom status. Even though she was never given the parts, I always felt she is as good on the lines of Angela Basset, and Whoppi Goldberg. She’s powerful when’s she’s on screen wheater’s it comedy or a comedy romance. My wife and I wants to see this film, I know it’s going to be amazing. As far as the oscar buzz is concerned our craft is truley ignored, we will see, we will see. (Side Note): Angela Basset was cheated in ‘What’s Love Got To Do With It’. ‘The Color Purple’ was cheated, and Diana Ross was cheated in ‘Lady Sing The Blues’.

  14. Hmm

I’m just happy Mo’nique has stopped with the “I HATE SKINNY BITCHES!!!” schtick. From the previews alone, it’s obvious this film will be heart moving and academy award winning (hopefully).

  15. backingbarack

im sorry but monique was not acting in this role. this is not a far stretch for her to act like a scorn bitter nasty single blk woman from the ghetto who speaks ebonics.

    come on.

    she is playing herself!

the only thing that is different. she doesnt hate skinny women but her “daughter” in this movie. they purposely made precious fat to show moniques “depth” as an actress. ha!

  16. AshleyNikole

I so wanna see this. Hearing nothing but great things about it.

I will be tuning in to Mo’Niques talk show. I hope that its
better than Wendy Williams who’s a bore to me

  17. Mika

I cried reading parts of the book and imagined Monique playing the mom’s role while doing so. Excellent book.

I can’t wait to see the movie.

If you haven’t seen Monique in Phat Girlz then you need to go rent it. She showed me in that movie that she has what it takes.

  18. breezzyy

    16. Shut up!

*im almost certain monique will win for this…she’s been getting buzz actually since last winter when it premiered at sundance.

The book was amazing as well, wonder how much they will put in the movie though.

  19. WillPwr

I hear her performance is Oscar worthy. I read the book “Push” in High School in a day.

  20. s. dot

Bmore stand up! Get it Mo!

  21. Tasha

I can’t wait to see this movie! Can anybody say “Oscar”!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  22. fresh2def

GONE HEAD MONIQUE GIRL. YOU KNOW IM GONE GO SEE IT. MAYBE ALONE CUZ I HATE CRYING AROUND PPL I KNOW. LOL

  23. Still Maintaining

    Thats whats up.

Oprah being next to GOD was a stupid comment she’s a good role model but there are a lot of good role models and not all of them are celebrities. No One even comes close to rocking the Almighty status.

  24. jj

can’t wait!! u know the movin gon b deep!!

  25. cali panamami

once again, i’m very excited to see this movie…..

    but ummmm…..
have you seen the movie, #16???
    i’ll wait…

  26. Kelsi

    @24 Very true

That was a stupid statement Oprah is not near God she has done things for the black community and especially the white community (just look at her show) but regardless of that she is a good role model but God that is a stretch! Monique obviously has some issues I hope she get the help she needs

  27. Deann Dmere

—–Yea if the movie is half as good as the book then it’ll be defintaely “Oscar” worthy

  28. boombox

the damn previews had me in tears so i know this movie is gonna hit hard.

  29. LULU

I’m glad she said ‘might be,’ but even that is going a bit far.

Can’t wait to see her in this role. I hear it’s gonna be in limited release though.

  30. soulphlower

I can not wait to support this. I read the book “Push” a few years ago and it was very powerful.

  31. theComplex

I can’t WAIT to see this movie! Definitely Oscar worth as stated above.

  32. SassyT

This looks like an excellent movie. Oscar worthy? It sure seems like it. Monique can act her butt off. Can’t wait until it comes out.

  33. Gia

    Monique gets on my nerves!

  34. KEM

lol! obviously monique was in comedy mode for the first two answers.. they are utterly ridiulous! LOL @ her talking about free chicken.. she’s crazy…

I’m sure she was amazing as everyone is saying.. can’t wait to see it!

  35. SmooveFox

Im proud of Monique being able to forgive her brother for molesting her even though he didnt admit to doing it( If he did it). That takes alot to do if you ask me. Cudo’s to her.

  36. LadyA

I’m trying to “gear up” for this movie. I just saw TP’s “I can Do Bad All By Myself” and once i started crying, I couldn’t stop. That movie def hits home on many levels. The trailer for this seems so real, I’m not sure if I want to see it on big screen or at home. I already know I’m going to cry. LOL
