‘ROUND THE WAY: SERENA WILLIAMS LOSES U.S. OPEN ON PENALTY

Check out Serena Williams at a press conference following her loss to Belgium’s Kim Clijsters in the U.S. Open on Saturday.

After Clijsters won the first set, Williams slammed her racket to the court twice, earning a warning for racket abuse. A lineswoman then called Williams for a foot fault on her second serve, which Williams then reportedly approached her and told her that “you don’t know me,” and that she would “shove this ball down your throat”. Having already picked up her first code violation, she had no points left to give.

Tournament referee Brian Earley explained the penalty procedure and why the match ended without Clijsters being declared the winner:

Williams was called for a foot fault on her second serve, making the score 15-40. She then yelled something at the line umpire, who reported it to the chair umpire. Based on the report, Miss Williams was assessed a code violation, point penalty, for unsportsmanlike conduct. It just happened that point penalty was match point.

Williams explained to reporters following the match: “I used to have a real temper — and I’ve gotten a lot better. I know you don’t believe me, I used to be worse.

@ BackingBarack, You are really a silly trick. We knew it from the first post. The other posts were just redundant. Look it up.

    LMAO WOW!

Serena was in the wrong and she deserves whatever punishment she gets be it fines or suspension. She showed no remorse in her issued statement and she acted snotty and inconvenienced during the post-game press conference. She’s exhibited this type of behavior before and tennis fans are familiar with her horrible court attitude when things don’t go her way. She needs to be slapped with a reality check and stop blaming her lack of respect and control on her ‘passion for the game’.

I stand by her! She got upset big deal! Everyone gets up set and newsflash this is not the first time that a player has had an outburst. Can black people support one another on anything?! SMH!

I stand by you, girl. It was a BS call, and we all have an off day! They dont call this stuff on white players!

Totally agree with those mentioning race- if any one thinks Serena is the only one who does this check out Andy Murray, Fernando Gonzalez, Dinara Safina and Andy Roddick. The venom this incident has provoked is uncalled for. The Williams were only meant to win a few Grand Slams not dominate the game (read; ”get too uppity”) and the fact that at this stage of their career they still come up against racism is so sad.

GG Boo is spot on- some of you abusing Serena need to follow tennis for the whole year and not just one or two weeks during the US Open to see what they have to put up with.

Serena you are the baddest chick in tennis right now, and those good ole tennis peeps hate that a woman of color is dominating their precious game. Just like Tiger they really hate you, why..because you are the bomb! You are excellent and that hag was straight hating. I know that all the years of racism have taken it’s toll, you would think that having Obama as president would lighten things but in alot of instances it has made it worse. I’m glad you let her have it, she should be banned, and her ass should have been removed. I’ll feel you and believe me the US Open website and office will be hearing from alot of people on this BS. Everyone should hit them up with their opinion, let them know how we feel about this injustice!!!!

    Serena you rock!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Never heard of McEnroe getting booted with all his mess!!!

  8. Tealeaf

Love Serena, I hate she acted like that because she is great tennis and good person.

She can come better then that

  9. Vee1

John McEnroe used to act like this all the time. Nothing new, but because it’s Serena it’s so bad. Everybody is entitled to a bad day and she had hers on Saturday.

  10. Lays Guerrero

I shited my paints watch Serena….my God, she is crazy!!!

  11. HalfNakedHoochies

Serena…smh…I can understand that sports may get a little intense but that is NO reason to go off.

  12. FallBackHaters

Who the fcuk cares, she’s human. Everyone’s allowed to make mistakes. Damn everything is an outrage nowadays.

  13. JUDAH

—–Damn….sounds like ‘ROID RAGE, Lmao. If I was that linesperson, I would take
—–a Serena Williams threat to shove balls done someone’s throat as sexual
—–harassment, because I don’t believe she’s talking about a tennis ball.

  14. jeanmela

Serena-I absolutely LUV U & I hope that this doesn’t change the way U play, UR passion, or UR emotions that’s displayed on the court! If U were any other player they could say U would’ve lost any way but NOT U! I’ve seen U COME BACK from MATCH POINT DOWN plenty of times, so I understand why U were so angry especially @ such a critical point N the match & a bogus call that’s rarely called. Anyway U R the BEST PLAYER & U don’t have anything 2 prove!! I say DO U. I SUPPORT U NO MATTER WHAT!! BRUSH OFF HATERS

    P.S.
No one ever says anything about the “”#1″” player Dinara Safina’s constant MELTDOWNS or the way John Mcenroe, Connors, Dementieva, Andy Roddick, etc use to go off faithfully..You see my point. BTW the commentators need to get a grip…people are quick to say what they would or wouldn’t do but until you are sitting in the same situations WE really don’t know what we would do especially at such a professional level.

At the end of the day, Serena– tell’um to give you your damn doubles trophy & pay you!!

  15. speak da truth

what i can’t believe is how sanctimonious and judgemental many of you are. Serena had an off day. she said some things that caused her to receive penalties. no one on this blog will be personally affected by her penalty. AND it was a bad call. since most of us play for fun and the occasional wager, perhaps we can’t understand what it’s like for Serena, she plays for her livelihood. at those stakes, it’s understandable that she’d be fired-up by such a blatantly bad call at that point in the match…especially if other bad calls had been made during the match.

  16. Marlene

Not a good situation, however I don’t recall them on John McEnroe or Jimmy Connors when they had their fits. They thought it was cute when the boys had their hissy fits. So when a woman looses it, it not lady like. Again, not execusing her behavior, but I don’t think the guys should get a pass either.

  17. backingbarack

    lmao @ 73 i agree.

  18. KIDDO

I Luv the Williams Sister’s, don’t hate on her because she’s a strong black sista!

Everybody deserves a Bad Day! Damn! let it go already!

  19. Quiche-A

#73 Judah got me LMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Whew, I was thinking the same thing!

I’m a huge tennis fan and there is nobody that can convince me that they had this planned from the very beginning. The goal was to do whatever they have to do in order to prevent one of the sisters from winning. I’m a little disappointed that Serena let these idiots get to her,but she is human afterall. Only in America. They cheered for Kim Clisters against both sisters. Its no wonder she lost her cool.

  22. HALCYONC

@Sucka4love0…Serena has proven time and time again that she can come back and win. I really can’t say that she would have lost the match anyway. She won Wimbledon when she was a point away from losing the semi finals.

  23. HALCYONC

The electronic line call was implemented mainly because both sisters had been cheated so many times.
