‘ROUND THE WAY: SERENA WILLIAMS LOSES U.S. OPEN ON PENALTY

Sunday, September 13, 2009

Check out Serena Williams at a press conference following her loss to Belgium’s Kim Clijsters in the U.S. Open on Saturday.

After Clijsters won the first set, Williams slammed her racket to the court twice, earning a warning for racket abuse. A lineswoman then called Williams for a foot fault on her second serve, which Williams then reportedly approached her and told her that “you don’t know me,” and that she would “shove this ball down your throat”. Having already picked up her first code violation, she had no points left to give.

Tournament referee Brian Earley explained the penalty procedure and why the match ended without Clijsters being declared the winner:

Williams was called for a foot fault on her second serve, making the score 15-40. She then yelled something at the line umpire, who reported it to the chair umpire. Based on the report, Miss Williams was assessed a code violation, point penalty, for unsportsmanlike conduct. It just happened that point penalty was match point.

Williams explained to reporters following the match: “I used to have a real temper — and I’ve gotten a lot better. I know you don’t believe me, I used to be worse.

Not a good situation, however I don’t recall them on John McEnroe or Jimmy Connors when they had their fits. They thought it was cute when the boys had their hissy fits. So when a woman looses it, it not lady like. Again, not execusing her behavior, but I don’t think the guys should get a pass either.

I’m a huge tennis fan and there is nobody that can convince me that they had this planned from the very beginning. The goal was to do whatever they have to do in order to prevent one of the sisters from winning. I’m a little disappointed that Serena let these idiots get to her,but she is human afterall. Only in America. They cheered for Kim Clisters against both sisters. Its no wonder she lost her cool.

@Sucka4love0…Serena has proven time and time again that she can come back and win. I really can’t say that she would have lost the match anyway. She won Wimbledon when she was a point away from losing the semi finals.

The electronic line call was implemented mainly because both sisters had been cheated so many times.
