‘ROUND THE WAY: SERENA WILLIAMS LOSES U.S. OPEN ON PENALTY

Sunday, September 13, 2009

Check out Serena Williams at a press conference following her loss to Belgium’s Kim Clijsters in the U.S. Open on Saturday.

After Clijsters won the first set, Williams slammed her racket to the court twice, earning a warning for racket abuse. A lineswoman then called Williams for a foot fault on her second serve, which Williams then reportedly approached her and told her that “you don’t know me,” and that she would “shove this ball down your throat”. Having already picked up her first code violation, she had no points left to give.

Tournament referee Brian Earley explained the penalty procedure and why the match ended without Clijsters being declared the winner:

Williams was called for a foot fault on her second serve, making the score 15-40. She then yelled something at the line umpire, who reported it to the chair umpire. Based on the report, Miss Williams was assessed a code violation, point penalty, for unsportsmanlike conduct. It just happened that point penalty was match point.

Williams explained to reporters following the match: “I used to have a real temper — and I’ve gotten a lot better. I know you don’t believe me, I used to be worse.

I THINK THAT WE ALL HAVE LOSE OUR TEMPER SOMETIMES BUT SERENA HANDLED IT THE WRONG WAY…SHE LET THE GAME GET TO HER……BUT I THINK THAT ALL OF THIS COVERAGE ON HER IS OVERSHADOWING THE WINNER (CLIJSTER)…AND SHE WAS LOSING IN THE MATCH ANYWAY (SERENA)

I love Serena and obviously she let her emotions take over and get the best of her. Like she said she is an intense player and sometimes when you give something your all and is let down then you react without thinking. Come on you all she’s human, get over it!

She definitely need anger management, but to be honest from a winner like her I wouldn’t have expected anything different. She was already losing and for the line judge to take any chance she had left away I knew she was going to go off. She need to do better though that was no excuse to have poor sportsmanship like that. I just read she got fined 10k.

17.

Babatunde

Sunday, September 13, 2009 /

I felt Serena was justified in the way she acted.
She is a player who has come back and won a match from being on the brink of losing like she was yesterday. Then that stupid idiot called a foot fault when it was very questionable.

Also, people like Andy Murray act much worse in lesser situations and people don’t say nothing about them.

I support Serena. She is an awesome athlete. To my recollection this is the only time she has been ‘unsportsmanlike’.
If this keeps happening, then, something needs to be addressed, but all the people that are ‘ashamed’ should try living like a human every once in while and get angry. Then turn around and get ashamed at yourself.

There was no foot fault and what kind of judge calls a foot fault in a huge match like that? This kind of crap has been happening to Sarina for years. This is the us open and the sisters are the only americans left! And people had the nerve to boo her in NEW YORK. Dont be surprised if they dont come back after all they have to deal with from the media. At the end of the day, you’re still just a n$##.

KANYE WACK SUCKS FOR JUMPING ON THE VH1 STAGE AND DISSING TAYLOR SWIFT!!! THE BIGGEST A$$$$$$ EVER!! EVERY DOG HAS ITS DAY!!

24.

She made a fool of herself!

Sunday, September 13, 2009 /

Ok…apparently the people commenting haven’t seen the whole video. She was cursing that chick out! She dropped that F bomb at least 4 times and it was live so they couldn’t bleep it out! The commenter had to apologize on her behalf! TMZ has the whole video. Then she gets up there and acts like she had no idea that she had done anything wrong! I like Serena too, and everybody has a bad day, but she had a nasty lil attitude and it was completely uncalled for! She deserved to lose.

@ 19: I don’t where you been, you must not watch Serena play much, but she is know for her ‘unsportsmanlike’ behavior. She has thrown her racquet down before after losing a match, cursed at a ref, walked off the court without shaking her opponets hand. She can be really nasty sometimes. She is a sore loser and her attitude needs to be checked.

25.

Sunday, September 13, 2009 /

You know this is really getting old. For far too long people have been overlooking Serina’s little fits. I am tired of her little bursts and I am tired of her being a poor sportsman. She never truly gives her opponents props for winning. She instead says she did not play her game. While that is true I mean come on. You win some you loose some. Just give your opponents their due respect and shut the f up.

26.

A&E girl

Sunday, September 13, 2009 /

That wasn’t a foot fault- it was proven so! As an athlete myself(not professional tho, obviously) i know the intensity of a tight game like this and when that linesman called the foot fault, I KNEW Serena was about to pop off!! she let the ghetto OUT! BUT as a respected and leading tennis lady(and black one @ that), she should’ve controlled her anger and taken it up with the umpire instead of attacking the linesman.

Ok now on to the randomness!
umm did anyone else witness the FOOLISHNESS that is kanye west just a few moment ago on the VMA’S? He keeps giving me a reason to dislike him more and more. Whether it was for publicity or not, direscpecting Taylor Swift right in her face was OUT OF LINE! ughhh i hate people like him!

@24, Serena shook Kim’s hand like 3 times.

28.

She made a fool of herself!

Sunday, September 13, 2009 /

@GG Boo: It is not a black or white thing. She slammed her raquet down out of frustration. That is called a ‘foot fault’. She was properly fault for it and she should have kept her mouth shut then. But she let her anger get the best of her and she layed that chick out for no reason! She knew she was gonna lose and she knew the penalty for using profanity on the court! She should have lost for bad ’sportsmanship’. Maybe she will learn next time to not let her anger get the best of her. She should know by now she can’t win them all. She needs to get over herself!

29.

She made a fool of herself!

Sunday, September 13, 2009 /

@ 27: I was talking about another match. I can’t remember who she played, it was several years ago, she lost the match and just walked off the court and left the girl standing there! Youtube it. I watch every Serena match, so I know what I am talking about! She has very bad ’sportsmanship’ sometimes.

Let me just say this, some of them male white tennis players have done far WORSE than what Serena did and gotten away with it. Serena could have handled it better, but to call a foot fault at such a critical point (when there wasn’t a foot fault) is not right. I hate how all these white sports commentators trying to trash him now. Serena, we all make mistakes and in the moment of passion do things we regret. I don’t condone her actions, but I UNDERSTAND. When you are passionate about something as she is with tennis, you can lose your cool. I will support Venus and Serena no matter what, cause the white media is trying their damnest to tare her down after this.

I saw the video!

Sunday, September 13, 2009 /

I saw the video at TMZ and No. 24 is right! She cursed at the Judge and apparently threatened her and when the Judge reported it she threw her raquet down. She knew she was gonna lose and when the Judge faulted her she went off. She did shake her opponets hand though. But this is not Serena’s first temper tantrum on the court !She is a very sore loser! Like someone said earlier, when she does lose she alwasy says how she wasn’t playing her best or the Judge made a bad call. She never just congratulates her opponent and except the fact that she lost fair and square! She needs to accept the fact that you cannot win them all and just move on! Don’t embarass yourself by throwing a tantrum! She should have lost!

I saw the video too, adn honestly it was funny as hell! She went off on that Judge! The judge did make a bad call, and I would have been upset too, but you can’t curse her out and threaten to kill her! Lol! Then when the judge snitched, Serena tried to deny it and was like “Did I scare you, I’m sorry, but I know people have said a lot worse to you!” It was funny as hell ! Serena is my girl, but you know that lil Asian women scare easily! You can’t be going off on them like that! I mean put yourself in the Judges shoes, if you saw Serena’s big burly looking ass coming at you, and threatens to kill you, wouldn’t you tell too! Watch the vid before you comment people!

Damn Right …… I’m on Serena’s side. All that hard work and training just to have a B.S call on you. Of course any human being would flip sooner or later.

In this situation ….. Nobody was right. The umpire wasn’t right for the B.S call, Serena wasn’t right for not curbing her language, and the Chair Umpire wasn’t right for giving a point penalty when this could have been resolved afterward with a fine or something.

Serena is a competitor and there was NO foot fault. The A$$hole Open should have had instant replay long ago. Sports is not about tea and crumpets. The lind judge wore coke bottle glasses, so they shouldn’t have put her in for such an important match.

I will not let the white folks tell me how bad Serena is, when McEnroe and Connors made a living at cussing everybody out and they all thought it was cute. I am not ashamed of Serena. If anything with all the yapping today from the tennis commentators she knows who her friends are and it’s not them. I bet their ratings went down today, I deliberately watched football all GD day. The William sisters bring viewers and sponsors.
Besides did this asian woman even understand english. I live in Cali and sometimes when I’m talking to one of them they know one sentence of good english and then they just smile, and I know they don’t understand a dayummm thing I said.

@28 SHEMADE: You keep telling yourself it’s not a race thing. When you have people rooting against you in your own country and it’s the host country for the Open you already know what’s up. If you don’t think tennis isn’t a sport with ties to racism you need to go back and read. Black folks weren’t even allowed on the courts, golf courses and the stupid clubs that house certain sports. And again, there are plenty of other tennis stars that have gotten OC. It’s not to say what she did was right, butreference comment #50. They are right.

Serena was in the wrong and she deserves whatever punishment she gets be it fines or suspension. She showed no remorse in her issued statement and she acted snotty and inconvenienced during the post-game press conference. She’s exhibited this type of behavior before and tennis fans are familiar with her horrible court attitude when things don’t go her way. She needs to be slapped with a reality check and stop blaming her lack of respect and control on her ‘passion for the game’.

Totally agree with those mentioning race- if any one thinks Serena is the only one who does this check out Andy Murray, Fernando Gonzalez, Dinara Safina and Andy Roddick. The venom this incident has provoked is uncalled for. The Williams were only meant to win a few Grand Slams not dominate the game (read; ”get too uppity”) and the fact that at this stage of their career they still come up against racism is so sad.

GG Boo is spot on- some of you abusing Serena need to follow tennis for the whole year and not just one or two weeks during the US Open to see what they have to put up with.

Serena you are the baddest chick in tennis right now, and those good ole tennis peeps hate that a woman of color is dominating their precious game. Just like Tiger they really hate you, why..because you are the bomb! You are excellent and that hag was straight hating. I know that all the years of racism have taken it’s toll, you would think that having Obama as president would lighten things but in alot of instances it has made it worse. I’m glad you let her have it, she should be banned, and her ass should have been removed. I’ll feel you and believe me the US Open website and office will be hearing from alot of people on this BS. Serena-I absolutely LUV U & I hope that this doesn’t change the way U play, UR passion, or UR emotions that’s displayed on the court! If U were any other player they could say U would’ve lost any way but NOT U! I’ve seen U COME BACK from MATCH POINT DOWN plenty of times, so I understand why U were so angry especially @ such a critical point N the match & a bogus call that’s rarely called. Anyway U R the BEST PLAYER & U don’t have anything 2 prove!! I say DO U. I SUPPORT U NO MATTER WHAT!! BRUSH OFF HATERS

P.S.
No one ever says anything about the “”#1″” player Dinara Safina’s constant MELTDOWNS or the way John Mcenroe, Connors, Dementieva, Andy Roddick, etc use to go off faithfully..You see my point. BTW the commentators need to get a grip…people are quick to say what they would or wouldn’t do but until you are sitting in the same situations WE really don’t know what we would do especially at such a professional level.

At the end of the day, Serena– tell’um to give you your damn doubles trophy & pay you!!

what i can’t believe is how sanctimonious and judgemental many of you are. Serena had an off day. she said some things that caused her to receive penalties. no one on this blog will be personally affected by her penalty. AND it was a bad call. since most of us play for fun and the occasional wager, perhaps we can’t understand what it’s like for Serena, she plays for her livelihood. at those stakes, it’s understandable that she’d be fired-up by such a blatantly bad call at that point in the match…especially if other bad calls had been made during the match.
