‘ROUND THE WAY: TYRA DEBUTS HER “REAL HAIR” ON TALK SHOW

September 8th, 2009

Former Model turned Talk show host Tyra Banks has been promoting the season premiere of her talk show for months now. She has been tweeting and telling people that she would reveal her “real hair” in support of inner and outer beauty, etc. Here is what they wrote on the Tyra Show blog:

It’s all about celebrating inner and outer beauty and owning and rocking what you’ve got! Tyra is trading in her trademark weaves — and debuting her never-before-seen “real hair” on today’s show!

Tyra on her twitter page:
Here’s my REAL hair(b4 haircut). No wigs, no weaves, just me. told u I wasn’t bald! Is it wat ya’ll expected?

I do have some questions, why is it such a big deal that she debuted her real hair? Why did she feel the need to tweet that she “wasn’t bald-headed”? If she was bald-headed, why would it matter? Sooo many questions, not enough time..

Her hairline is awful. She’s almost bald anyway. She should just chop it all off and go natural. She’d be so much prettier.

    Hello

Tyra looked great. There is no need for her to get her hair cut and definately nothing wrong with her hair line. People are always looking for something negative to say. She is beautiful and her hair is long. Good for Tyra! I glad she showed these women that you do not have to be fake.

we all know why she felt the need to do this, because she is the most vain person ever! despite her crazyness i still, for some odd reason, think she’s amazing and love every dramatic thing she does. her hair looks fine, she would still look like a model with no hair so it’s whatever.

    # 5. Are you serious? Tyra is the epitome of fake. She had a nose jobs and wears nothing buy wigs and weaves. Takes it off for ONE show and she is expected to promote self-love? LAUGHABLE. Tyra needs to try again.

#9 i so agree. Wendy is fake, in the sense that she wears wigs and has a boob job and so forth, but who in hollywood isn’t . The difference between Wendy and others is that she is happy about who she is. I admire Wendy. Tyra on the other hand is annoying. I feel like she tries too hard to make it seems that she can relate to everybody she meets. Wendy just says what is on her mind all the time and it feels like she is being genuine. Plus Tyra has some stupid topics on her show sometimes. ‘Addicrted to facebook’. Come on ……….

To all those that had negative commments to make , its not needed. Tyra Banks is a beautiful black woman , weave and all , the fact that she chose to publicy wear her own hair is more than half black woman we know , so what is the problem. My advice to black woman every hair is apart of your beauty , but it is not to define you. Long hair does not mean better , Weave does not mean better its just an accessory if that. Embrace who you are , love your self even if the next person does not because that negative energy and why deal with that. Black Woman need to learn about self acceptance and understand that we are all beautiful regardless of society and those standards. I understand that society is not fair and things like hair and lighter skin constantly plague our culture and due to what we see on television and the media overall play a major part in how many of us view our selves but thats not YOUR problem. Beauty is only skin deep and Black is sooo beautiful so embrace it love it and dont second guess how beautiful you really are my Black Woman

@ 11 I agree with you on those dumb show topics on Tyra’s show like today she had something like “can u tell I’m biracial?” Who cares… and she does seem to be a bit vain Tyra is a pretty women but seems to be really superficial and too concerned about what over people think, who cares if you wear wigs everyday or gain 20 lbs. as long as your happy and healthy, Wendy is funny and somewhat real (personality wise) maybe that is why Wendy knocked Tyra from FOX to the CW.

as much as i think that Tyra can be a corn ball she shows major insight on some of the issues that she chooses to address.

i myself was never allowed to perm my hair growing up. my dad was completely against putting any harsh chemicals in my head. today i am extremely grateful for his decision. Although at the time there were no images at all of black girls that looked like myself; dark skinned with kinky hair. i could never understand why black women in the media who were claimed as “beautiful” looked nothing like myself. i thought i was subpar because i didn’t have long straight hair. it made a huge difference when i learned that in reality those women look nothing like their images. it was all weave and make-up.

i think that it is important and BRAVE that she strips herself down. as adults it doesn’t make a difference to us because we know better. it comes off as fame whoring. but to young black girls that look up to her (and there are many) she lets them in on the reality behind Hollywood images.her actions give them the chance to be proud of their natural selves.

    What?

I know why she did it, just read the comments on all of the blogs about almost every female entertainer. They are forever saying who’s hair is fake and who is bald headed, but the reality is that most of these women have more hair than the females hating on blogs!

(Black) Women, please stop allowing your hair to imprison you. Stop putting so much pressure on yourselves over hair. Go swimming, go workout, go do whatever it is you’re not doing because you’re worried about your hair. Please learn to love your natural selves and stop letting all forms of media tell you your natural hair isnt good enough. Not knocking those with perms, weaves, wigs, etc, but women, please learn to love your (natural)selves and take the time to find out who you are independent of the fake media influences in our society.

Btw, it’s so obvious how insecure Tyra is. As much as she wants to empower women, it mostly sounds like all she’s doing is trying to convince herself that she actually believes what she’s spewing on and on about (mostly herself).

One thing about Trya although she may seem shallow to some but she is one of the only stars to show her real self to the public. Hair hate it or not but it is an issue with black folk. There are more people who should wear there hair own hair whether natural, relaxed or however. I know what it is like to feel like you are only pretty with weave or relaxed hair. I don’t care I cut my hair off and rockin it au natural whether people like it or not.

Did the new season start today!?

Anyways I don’t know why some people choose to wear weave. I know a lot of people say it’s easier to handle and stuff but I’d rather maintain real hair then having to sew or glue tracks in my head. Especially those who have obvious weaves in – why not get something that looks natural? And WHY glue tracks in your head without perming your hair? The amount of girls I’ve seen with weave and an unpermed head – it looks horrible, the textures don’t match!

I know quite a few people who have really nice hair but choose to wear weaves – ugly cheap weaves at that.

    I just don’t get it ..

BUT, Tyra has decent hair – her forehead is ………..

She has way too many issues. The main point is that no one cares if she has a lacefront, weave, natural, or hat on. She is self-absorbed and that is why I do not watch her show. Oprah looks good for her age, but at least she is more hung up on news and trying new things than being closed-minded.

It’s really not that serious! She’s just having a show encouraging women to rock their own hair! Keep doin’ what ya doin’ Tyra! Congratulations on winning ur award! You are a beautiful sistah!! I remember when Tyra had very little hair. I think it was early on in her career. Anyway, she’s gorgeous with or without long hair. Most people already think women of color can’t grow their hair or have hair that’s down their back and it’s really their own. Perez was even surprised! sidebar: hmm.. all the hatred and negativity aimed at people of color on a daily basis, you would think that we would support our own. Will we ever get it?

Tyra’s hair is nice. I don’t see what the big deal is. She was more worried about it than probably anyone else was and I never thought for a second she might be bald. I give her props for being brave enough to show her real hair, I think too many women believe those wigs and crap are who they really are. She has a head full of hair, she needs to loosen up.

You know for the most part I have always been a Tyra fan – back when she wrote that book for young girls on being proud of who you are and exposing her natural photos in the book. back when other celebreties would never do that. I like that as a women/black women that she is “empowering” and not just a body without a brain (although a bit self-abosorbed – but who aint these days) -but I can’t beleive that in 2009 “to weave or not to weave” is a cultural issue of identity and self esteem for us sistas Dag…why can’t it just be as simple as a personal prefence/choice with no self hate or wanabee issues? I don’t care what no one says – do you – whatever that is. Long hair, short, fake hair – it’s the fun in being a women and having all those options – I for one love it. I go natural, I go fake, I just go…come on my black ladies – seriously, there are huge issues for us to be way more concerned about – this is the epitomy of majoring in the minors! God Bless your hair, your forhead and however you choose to rock it..just love you and .do you boo!

All these compliments and riding so hard for her is exactly what she wanted. For droves of people to unite and tell her how wonderful and beautiful she is. She either doesn’t know how to or doesn’t want to love and validate herself. She needs other people to. Tyra’s show is nothing more than an egomaniacal platform for self hatred disguised as empowerment. She is narcissism personified. Her feigned concern and depth when dealing with her guests is laughable. She’ll listen to them for a few minutes before launching into an anecdote about her modeling days that is suppose to humanize her and make her relatable. Hypocrisy I say! I gave it a shot and watched today. But I couldn’t stomach the whole show. The frown with your eyes bit cemented my changing the channel. I know, as black women we need to support each other. But I can’t get behind Tyra with a clear conscience. Even when she has descent topics, she does some ignorant “oh we black girls blah blah blah,” or “my ghetto booty this and that.” Not to mention, she’s a horrible “journalist”. Yeah yeah, she’s a model. But dammit, she’s a mockery of my profession. I’m 5″2. I don’t try to model. She’s dumb as shit. She shouldn’t be on t.v. End rant. I have enough papers due this semester. I won’t write another one on Tyra Banks. LOL

how many time did they ask you if you have hair under your wig? even some white males have the nerves to question your hair, your skin, the way you eat, whatever… you know… they still act in 2009 like you’re another species and that they’re at the zoo
