i have to add that putting Newark on blast will not change Newark there has been many years of crime in Newark its just like Tenton, New Jersey one of the poorest areas in the U.S dateline did a story on Trenton 3 yrs ago and nothing has changed since then

“An ILLUMINATING spotlight”, lol. Good choice of words brother. Cory Booker is a Rhodes scholar. He is a pawn of the elite.

JUDAH, what are you talking about?!!?!? He is a ‘pawn’ oft he ‘elite’…. He is an educated, intelligent brother. Can we stop tearing each other down? Corey Booker is a smart, accomplished, driven man… that does not have to be paradoxical to being a black man. Your comment is along the lines of “hmmph, he talks ‘white’”

I am pleased that someone has taken up the thankless task of trying to help Newark. Mr. Booker went to Stanford, and is indeed a Rhodes Scholar… he could’ve cashed out at any point to go get a 6-figure salary somewhere.

I actually used to live in newark and is now 2 towns away…

I feel that I am in a different state compared to when I lived in Newark. Don’t get me wrong though, Newark does have some nice parts and is trying to change especially after the Prudential Center was build.

I just pray for the family of the 4 year old girl that was shot in crossfire a couple of days ago. I’m glad they caught one of the people invovled in the shooting :)

Uhh wow, I despise Newark….. the violence is disgusting, it’s not as bad as the prior years but it still isn’t acceptable. I can’t wait to move up out of here. Instead of the murders happening sporadically, they happens in groups at a time and that is just not right.

I live in Newark and have all my life. And yes, I have a college degree and continuing my education with a Masters degree. Matter of fact,I still live in newark. The difference between when I was young and now are the reconstructive/recreational programs that were available when I was young. Lots of the programs have been moved or are no longer running. This leaves many of today’s youth with no outlet. There are great places in newark. What you see on TV is not always a great representation of what goes on everywhere. Newark is a huge city you have to keep that in mind before you stereotype every person from the city. In he end a persons life is what they make of it.

I am not sure what changes Mayor Cory Booker is referring to because other than business growing in a small area, Newark is still ridden with violence. The people that work there and start businesses there usually don’t live there, so after 5 PM the change emerges. I live about 15 minutes away and once dated someone who accidentally moved there and believe me it is not anywhere near being a great place to live or raise children.

As a Brick-City Girl (born, raised, and married to a Brick City Boy), I have to say that I have become accustomed to hearing negative comments about my city, but in spite of that, I harbor deep love for this particular concrete jungle. Following a mayoral legacy of corruption (specifically Sharpe James and Kenneth Gibson), Mayor Corey Booker has decades of pure foolishness and deepset distrust (from residents and officials alike) to overcome. It is not impossible, it is not always easy, but it is a necessity. My extrinsic goal for completing my Ph.D. right now is to provide help for the struggle, not condemnation. I urge others to do the same because trust me, there are good decent people living there (amongst the drama), who are trying to see it be better for future generations.

Concrete Loop - I applaud you for helping Mr. Whitaker widen the spotlight on my home because knowledge is indeed the initial path to change…yes…we…can!!!

I am from Newark born and raised(and still live here) Where i live is a great place. I don’t hear gunshots and fights and all that the media portrays it to be!!!! I hear about the violence on tv just like everybody else. I am a teacher and I love my town. They make Newark seem like it’s a jungle but when I went to the “beautiful” miami i saw more drug activity than i ever seen in newark. It’s the people that makes it bad!!!

Diana Ross is totally distraught over Michael’s death. She knew him for 40 yrs. since he was 10 yrs. old & Michael was IN LOVE with her & even refused to give her away when she got married the 2nd time & the song “Dirty Diana” was about her (even though he still loved her & wanted her to take his kids if his mom couldn’t). I don’t care what anybody says, look at some of those pics, Michael and Diana had a thing back in the day, young tenderoni and experienced older woman, then Diana decided to only be “close” friends. If you look at some of those pics, there’s a knowing look between the two of them. I hope Diana writes her memoirs (although she probably would have her daughters publish it after she’s dead) and tell the world about her thing with Michael. Soooo many people are taking his death hard, but I tell you, this is a woman who at one time had an intimate relationship with him and is taking it really hard that she couldn’t save him.

I live in Jersey, but I have fam in Newark and trust me, Cory Booker is making a change. There has been sooo much corruption within the city govt for years before he took office and he is trying to really make a difference for a (potentially) great city. I will be tuning in to this. THANKS CL for even putting the info out there!!

TEDDY B, #23.. all I can say is PREACH! (in refernce to what Corey has to overcome)

My people, please watch the DVD STREET FIGHT.. it is a MUST!!!!!!! Don’t talk about Corey Booker negatively until you watch the monster that was in charge before.. he has demons for real and let them run a muck in Newark for YEARS! I applaud the people of Newark for voting for change. Let’s pray for Corey cause yea.. he really could have left and banked somewhere else like a previous poster noted.. let’s welcome this Rhodes Scholar with open arms. Not every educated black person is a pawn. WAKE UP people.. I don’t live in Newark but I frequent there. Thursdays after work in the summer at the PAC, there are nice places to eat too.. one of the spots over there (the Spot is cool too) has kids that volunteer working there. The service is great and the food is slamming.. how can you NOT support?

And furthermore to Teddy B and others who want to do something positive in the community.. best wishes & Thank you
