ARTIST TO WATCH: NABIHA

Thursday, October 1, 2009

Meet Nabiha. Born and raised in Copenhagen, Denmark, the singer/songwriter recently released her first single and new video entitled “Deep Sleep” on Border Breakers Records. Citing reggae, disco, rock, and R&B as major influences in her music, she also incorporated a Malian lullabye that her mom use to sing to her as a child at the end of “Deep Sleep”.

No news of an album release in the US, but if you’re in Denmark look for it in February 2010. Her video is below.

Peep her myspace for more info and dope promo photos. Love the style.

Ehhh… she has a good voice, I guess, but I don’t like the music.
If you like this check out Laura Izibor, she’s a black artist out of Ireland.

#1 your exactly right, I can’t stand it when people do that. Yet they buy the albums from the artist they criticize the most

This song is cute, a bit generic but I like it

PEOPLE , PEOPLE , PEOPLE LETS BE INTELLIGENT, CELEBRITIES DO NOT ASK TO BE PHOTGRAPH, ITS PAPARAZZI, LIKE LADYGA-GA SAID, THEY YOUR BIGGEST , THEY WILL CHASE YOU DOWN UNTIL…..YOU GO CRAZY. THATS JUST THE PRICE YOU HAVE TO PAY WHEN YOU BECOME FAMOUS LIKE RIHANNA, BEYONCE, MICHAEL JACKSON ETC, YOU SHOULDN’T RIHANNA NAMES BECAMES PAPARAZZI LIKE SNAPPING PICTURES AT HER, GET MAD AT THE PEOPLE WHO KEEP POSTING THE PICS, WHICH THEY DON’T HAVE TOO, AND SOME WOULD SAY” YOU DON’T HAVE TO RESPOND OR LOG ON TO GOSSIP SITES. IT DOESN’T BOTHER ME, I KNOW WHAT I ‘M GETTING INTO WHEN I ENTER THESE SITES, I KNOW THE MOST POPULAR WOMEN WHEN WE POSTED QUITE OFTEN, SO YOU SHOULD KNOW THAT TOO

Come on… Seriously??? Just because she’s… ahem…. passing the paper bag test doesn’t mean that she should be featured. I’m all cool with being diverse and mixing it up a bit, but try to reach for the cream of the unknown crop… This sounds like bubble gum pop teenage pop… Even Britney and those others that… ahem… fail the paper bag test have a more grown up sound than this… Disappointed with the CL brass for promoting this selection… It sucked…

Warning: After you listen to “Deep Sleep” you won’t be able to get the tune out of your head. “I Ain’t Leaving My Bed”. She has a Mary J, Macy Gray vibe in her voice. I think more foreign black artist should strut their bilingual stuff. “Dema dema deba, dema sopula, mi nemaby jabo, mi neame si…! lol! I give up! WTH was she saying?

The song wasn’t bad; it just wasn’t my cup of tea. To #1, “b**ch please.” I understand there are some ppl out there like those you speak of but honestly, I’VE NEVER MET ANY. Many people don’t buy music from artists they don’t respect. In fact, I can’t wait for the publication of “entertainers” who support Roman Polaski to come out so I can stop supporting them as well. Anyone can think an artist is full of sh*t while having their music in their iTunes library w/o guilt. Why? It’s simply because those tracks are DOWNLOADED. Duh. Like I said, artists I don’t respect don’t get a cent of my money and that means even if they have a catchy song. That’s what megaupload, rapidshare and zshare are for… to stop hyprcrisy and help break down the machine :) I will give this chick a shot and if I like her stuff and her, I’ll buy her music. If not, I won’t bother. It’s very simple so stop trying to throw out very RARE exceptional cases.

ok i wanna talk about this:

why do people like her and that other girl eva sing in english ? why dont they sing in danish and dutch, respectively ? is it because the music market is so small in those countries ?

i was checking out for some black artists in other countries, like russia or france for example, and they never sing in english - they sing in their own languages cos it’s not like we are lacking english language songs, right ?

and another thing - do they really know english that well and how come ? i’ve been in all those places and of course people can communicate but it s not as if they can give constructive interviews and all in english (unless they’ve been living or often vising english speaking countries).

OK. So how come in the picture, she’s lightskinned and in the video she’s darkskinned with a big gap in her teeth.

Forget the music, I’m all about image. And if she’s trying to pull of that Jill Scott, Lauryn Hill, A. Keys, Neo-soul type of deal…it’s not working. She doesn’t look right. But because shes trying to look like this, folks want to say that this is real music. PLEASE this is not real music. This is a Britney Spears/ Jessica Simpson song. Only thing is Britney Spears and JS look better.

You know what I mean?

She’s got a cute look, but the beat, almost the entire beat sounds very familar to a Gnarls Barkley Track….”Going On” i think is the song. Her sound here is VERY much like that Gnarls Barkley track.

She is SUCH A HAPPY SPIRIT!! I didn’t like the song the first 10 seconds.. but something told me to listen further.. then I was like HEY! I like this! Plus in the video, i can TOTALLY relate to crocheting in bed and not wanting to get out.. hehe..

I will DEF. add this song to the morning mix as well! I love her smile, style and the two colors that form the peace sign!
omg that song is catchy! It’s stuck in my head now after one itme listening to it, cuz it sounds like somethin a little happy kid would sing! lol

oh, and I had that Ab Contractor.. It pinched me too dammit! lol..
Also, interesting to compare her to a Female Cee-Lo.. Nahh.. sound but not content wise maybe. Good point Kellz. Also, Laura Izibor is the SHI__! Saw her Live.
Yay Other Ppl getting exposure who aren’t B or Rhi! (but congrats to B for that Billboard woman of the yr award. )

Anywho, I REALLY look forward to seeing more of Nabiha!.. I bet she’ll sing other languages too, like the french chicks that sing Makeda, but maybe English is more widespread than her other languages..something tells me she speaks probably french and portuguese too.. lots of Africans do.
