HOT OR NOT: RIHANNA - “RUSSIAN ROULETTE” + SINGLE COVER & ALBUM TITLE INFO

Tuesday, October 20, 2009

♫ Rihanna - Russian Roulette
ALTERNATE LINK

Check out Rihanna’s first official single, “Russian Roulette” (written by Ne-Yo) from her upcoming new album entitled, Rated R. The “Russian Roulette” video, directed by Anthony Mandler, will premiere in prime-time on ABC soon.

The song is slow tempo ballad but we heard she had some dance tracks on the new record too. I guess we will have to wait until November 23rd to hear more.

so many foolish things i need to address quickly
first of all, all the idiots calling her ‘rhisus’ and ‘rhiallah’ are DELUSIONAL. she’s not a f*cking god!
once i saw the comment #s, i just knew it had to be her stans commenting their lives away pretending to be other people, or just arguing with whoever thinks she’s a waste of space
when she eventually reaches a 1000 comments like the QUEEN did, then yaw can talk, but till then LOL, keep trying so hard to make her seem like she’s something special!
she’s a joke! a big joke…can’t believe people take her seriously wtf. the cover is very wh*rish (nothing surprising) and no one should (and will not) feel threatened by her so called ‘comeback’ becuz this is pure GARBAGE! only the people whose heads are far up in her azz will regard it as something of substance
@ furious styles, LMAO…..i see beyonce’s success is intimidating you so much. GET OVER IT FOOL! just like you run your mouth on her posts, her stans will defend her on your idol’s posts. no amount of comment posting you do will change that. you’re funny as hell with your silly comments. ‘B-yaki’?! ‘C-error’?! really, how old are you? snm……
@ shawty, LMFAAOO….you hit the nail right on the head. they’re mad cause we have things to defend those two with, all they’ve got is ’she’s fierce’, which isn’t completely true cause her STYLIST is the one who’s ideas can be called ‘fierce’

Keep on Hating….Russian Roulette is already #1 overseas….Keep on hating and watch Rihanna Money Pile up

The ridiculously unscientific results are in, and the news is good for the Barbados-born singer, as 83 percent of the people we talked to gave “Russian Roulette” the thumbs-up. Though many of them brought up the fact that they were expecting something different, most saw that as a positive. Rated R promises to be one of the most fascinating albums of the year, and “Russian Roulette” appears to have gotten it off on the right foot

MTV Website….This is the audience that matters and will spend their money on her album…

446. Lost My Purity Ring,

Yeah! I threw “Babs” in there to open some eyes and see the future. The new generation is here and the old will soon be forgotten. Rihanna is the fresh new face of the 21st. century! Songwritters are starting to connect with her umph! I knew that comparing her to Babs would push some buttons. Babs was a great singer, but not much to look at, unless you live near Amsterdam Ave. in Manhattan. Rihanna has runway appeal. She’s taking her craft serious and its gonna pay off big time on the next level. Did you know she speaks several languages? Wait until she records something in Chinese or Spanish. lol! She could help America get all its dollars back.

Someone said she needs to write her own songs. I disagree! She can just tweek them like Beyonce’ does. Like when she says the phrase, “You can see it through my chest” in the second chorus. I hear her distinct style from way back 4 years ago.

Rihanna’s voice is sweet, suttle, calm, gentle, rustic, soothing, melodic, rythmic and good. If you listened very well to her music you will hear she can take some really, really high notes (soprano). Maybe she does not want to scream like some angry crazy woman whining up her krutch and showing the shape of her vagina to the world.
The word HATE is blocking some people’s hearing. Ask my enemy about me. What do you expect to hear?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Maybe the gunshot went straight to one of you haters.listen to this as a lulloby song haters. Leave this beautiful talented girl alone. What do you want to her to sing? About you? well she is doing just that.

I like it. It has meaning and it makes you think. Not a typical Rihanna song; it shows growth, maturity and depth. I agree that a club banger may have been a better choice for her, but it is what it is. I’m not even a Rihanna fan/stan, despise all live performance by her, but this is…a good song. Even I can admit that, as a CB fan. So big ups to her. Best luck to the both of them. AND please stop trying to make this a competition.

Here’s what the LA Times says:

After some initial hints and rumors the past few weeks, Rihanna has returned to the pop landscape with a brand-new single, “Russian Roulette.” It’s her first official release since her February incident with then-boyfriend Chris Brown and the first track from her forthcoming “Rated R,” the Nov. 23 follow-up to 2007’s “Good Girl Gone Bad.”

Rihanna’s recent, tragic history ensures there’s more than a pop curiosity around the single, but she’s also been one of the industry’s fastest-rising stars. “Good Girl Gone Bad” spawned multiple hits, including the ubiquitous “Umbrella,” and has sold 2.5 million copes in the U.S., according to Nielsen SoundScan.

From the initial few listens on “Russian Roulette,” it’s clear that Rihanna isn’t going to play nice, nor does she appear to have any intention to shy from tough, violent subject matter. This is far from the typical ballad. It’s an assertive, harsh and, at times, frightening single, coming to a close with a gunshot. A guitar streak opens the number, but the song doesn’t explode into “Shut Up and Drive”-like exhilaration.

Instead, the song, co-written with Ne-Yo, strikes a more resolute tone. It’s hard to imagine it blasting out of car windows or even controlling a club, but it’s all attention-grabbing stuff, standing in stark — emphasis on stark — contrast to much of the current pop landscape. The smattering of piano keys could be a soundtrack to a horror film, and Rihanna’s quivering pre-verse gasps immediately put the listener on alert.

The lyrics are vague enough to keep people guessing but hint at a situation one probably doesn’t want to be in the middle of. “He says close your eyes, sometimes it helps,” Rihanna sings with unshaken directness, adding, ominously, “and then I get a scary thought.” The beats close in around her, and the strings quiver as if they’re being played through gritted teeth, building in the end to something almost approaching a theme to a Bond film.

But make no mistake, although the song comes to a close with a final bang, Rihanna is the heroine here. “So just pull the trigger,” she tosses off in the cut’s final moments, all swagger and confidence. The narrative of the song — and just who, exactly, is the shooter — matters less than Rihanna’s command performance. A midtempo song without overbearing production, the single belongs all to Rihanna, and she makes the best of it — a bit icy, a tad fearless, with the vocal strength to keep the orchestral flourishes at bay.

I don’t understand all this talk about suicide! Yeah, there’s a gun shot at the end, but that could signify anything;; I agree with some poster above who said it was a metaphor. About violence and torment. Or maybe even her career. But there’s an element of play in it as well (a sick dance) and the allure of it.

Like if you read the lyrics, Rihanna describes how the game played, and she repeats the instructions in a detached manner, giving a chilling effect, but in the end it’s what you don’t see but imagine that makes the song interesting. Cause when the gun is shot at her request in the end you can’t tell if it’s a prop/joke or if she dies, or maybe even her partner.

Honesly, I think it’s a great song, and it’s ironic. It’s not meant to be taken literally.

“As it is, the surefire hit, produced and cowritten by Ne-Yo, has proven true the reports that her new sound is a darker one, what with her oft-repeating chorus of “pull the trigger,” and dramatically abrupt ending—a sharp intake of Rihanna’s breath and a single echoing gunshot.”

MTV
http://bit.ly/30VcnG
“As Rihanna announced last week, “the wait is ova.” She debuted her new single “Russian Roulette” on her official Web site this morning. The track is a slow-burning ballad written and produced by Ne-Yo that shows off the more confessional side of the singer. “You can see my heart beating/ You can see it through my chest,” she sings in the chorus. Picking a ballad as the lead single to an album as hotly anticipated as Rated R is always something of a crapshoot, but the emotion and the melody behind the tune should carry it to success.”

Here’s what MTV had to say:

It’s been a long, odd year for Rihanna. She kicked off 2009 still riding high on the success of her hit 2007 album Good Girl Gone Bad, which featured smash singles like “Umbrella,” “Disturbia” and “Don’t Stop the Music.” But then her year got derailed by the domestic violence incident involving boyfriend Chris Brown. After what has seemed like an awfully long road, Rihanna is back with a new album (Rated R, which hits stores on November 23) and a new single in “Russian Roulette,” which made its debut this morning. Though many people (especially those of us in the MTV Newsroom) were expecting a hyped-up banger, “Russian Roulette” is actually a slow-burning ballad that puts the confessional lyrics front and center. Still, it retains the same sort of attitude and atmosphere that has made Rihanna such a definitive artist.
But that’s what we think. The real question is what the public thinks. There’s only one way we know of to find out what the people are thinking, which is why we repelled down the side of 1515 Broadway into New York’s Times Square to play the track for some fans (many of which were itching to catch Shakira and Paramore on “It’s On with Alexa Chung”) and find out what their knee-jerk reactions were.
The ridiculously unscientific results are in, and the news is good for the Barbados-born singer, as 83 percent of the people we talked to gave “Russian Roulette” the thumbs-up. Though many of them brought up the fact that they were expecting something different, most saw that as a positive. Rated R promises to be one of the most fascinating albums of the year, and “Russian Roulette” appears to have gotten it off on the right foot.

And, that survey was based on a “thumbs-up” from 83 percent of the homeless white people wandering around Broadway in the middle of the day.

494.

Prophet

Tuesday, October 20, 2009 /

The song starts off with a moody guitar intro, followed by a steady heartbeat like bass line. From there Rihanna starts comparing love to Russian roulette, or at least that’s what I assume she’s doing. She’s definitely improved in the vocal department, delivering her lines with a raw mix of fragility and defiance.

From there the song continues to build and build, before finally reaching it’s explosive conclusion. The whole thing has a very epic feel to it, like a big budget Steven Spielberg movie or something.

495.

Toya

Tuesday, October 20, 2009 /

I personally enjoyed the dark natured ballad and the fact that she’s so ambitious with her song concepts. The song is really moody with its haunting guitar opening and dark atmospheric undertones. I think the song is well produced and has a strong melody. It also sounds like it could be lifted from a James Bond soundtrack. The lyrics have a clever play on wording especially as she likens the ‘Russian Roulette’ game with the tale of a powerless and suicidal woman being controlled by an abusive man. One can even speculate that some of it is an indirect stab towards her past relationship with Chris Brown. My gripe is that some type of activist group may protest the song as an advocate for pro-suicide since the music ends abruptly with a sharp inhaled gasp & a single echoing gunshot. But overall, anyone who has encountered a relationship with hurt and pain can relate. I know I can. It illustrates a very vulnerable, emotional young woman with nothing but lost hope.

Surprised everyone giving it flack because she released a ballad for the first single. I mean yeah I was expecting a club banger as well be no doubt this will be soaring up the hot 100 as people are gonna rush to download it and looking at past Ne-yo penned songs for Rihanna all of them did considerably well on the charts “Take A Bow” “Hate That I Love You” and “Unfaithful”. I’m sure a few found those a little boring to but those single didn’t become flops and I doubt this will be. Rihanna gets too much airplay and we all know Def Jam got a lot of money on this being Rihanna is their cash cow so they are gonna be promoting the hell out of the song like it or not. For me it’s a grower.

Okay, I agree that people should not try to demonize Rihanna but peeps do the same thing to Beyonce. There are hundreds of videos all with the motivation to “expose” Beyonce as a demon worshipper. And a lot of it from Rihanna fans. Both sides go hard on each other for no reason because they see their artists are compeitition which is not the case.

Beyonce is not even a peer of Rihanna. Like a poster said, she’s an influence to Rihanna. Beyonce is above her like Mary, Mariah, Whitney, Toni B,, Janet and artists of that generation are above Bey. So it’s funny to have stan wars for that reason. Let’s judge the music for what it is. I like the song. I love the melody, I love that she had the balls to use a ballad as her lead single.

And another thing, the only other person who would get this kind of traffic is Beyonce, when a song of hers drop so shows that Rihanna is big stuff right now. We will see if this continues but Beyonce fans(of which I am one), must admit the truth and just be glad that two black women are doing it in the industry. I do hope Rihanna gets to the point where she will improve her stage presence and vocals enough in live performances, because that’s the next level for her. She does that, and she will have longevitity. This is coming from unbias place when I say this. But again, this is a good song though. 4/5….

Ok the kids are gone so now we can have real discussions on this. Seriously Rihanna is huge now. I didn’t even know she had a single out and my co workers were like did you hear Rihanna’s new song? I’m talking grown ass women late 20s early 30s discussing this girl. I did not know she was that popular I went on yahoo and saw that she was the top searched or whatever and I realized she doing big things.

Hearing this is telling me she has improved vocally. Now I seen her live a few times on TV and it wasn’t all that great. I hope her management is telling her to step it up and I hope she is training for live performances because her hype needs to be complimented with talent. I believe this girl can sing but she has not proved it to me live. That’s all anyone wants from her and I’m telling you the negativity would drop like flies if she improved her live performances. With that being said she would need to sound better than her studio versions because its hard to impress people that don’t want to be impressed.

Nah Sweetie…I Think u lost ur mind

What the hell dose 400 post got to do with Chris single Transformer?
So wat if chris got only 100 post…What dose that has to do with anything

Chris was way popular than Rihanna…If u havent notice…..Chris Can Dance,Sing,nd Act…Plus he puts on AMAZING SHOWS
Chris has been in 3 movies…

Stay on the radio station….Speaking of radio …I Just heard Transformer On the Radio Station..Lmao

Oh by the way Transformer 1# on iTUNE

For ur info chris is Not a flop….His 2 Last albums has NOT flop…plz hunni Get ur FACT STRAIGHTS

Ciara 3rd made not done so good as her last 2 albums..but that dosent mean she a flop…

Speaking of Rihanna…Didnt her Her last 2 albums flop? 3rd album Her Good Girl Gone Bad was like her only Best Album

And u Call Chris & Ciara a Flop?….Chris & Ciara Are Way Much More TALENT THEN RIHANNA…

Havent I seen u on Beyonce & Ciara Post All the time…hmmm

Like I Said Before the song is Nice….

Wait To See How This Album Turns Out

Best To Lucks To Rihanna..If She think She can Beat Lady GaGa On the Charts…

In the white community there are groups of parents and citizens that review songs like this and actively work to keep this mind numbing garbage away from their kids, families and community.

This song glorifies porn and suicide. Is it ok for these sell out entertainers to continue peddle these images to our future leaders?

Positive images are seldom put forth in the media…one would think those such as Rhi Rhi and others would use their voice, influence, and power to make a real change…but NO!

This NEW generation of entertainers is no better than the drug dealers that sell crack to our children. Simply put the only thing these folks are interested in is lining their pockets….while you are left to deal with the results of their influence!

Remember Columbine!!!!
