I feel like it isn’t a bad song, but better as a second or third single. Since it’s a ballad. And the single cover, doesn’t really go with the song to me. It’s edgy in a very different way rather than barbwire, to me.

First let me say that I don’t love the song but I don’t hate the song.
Ok. Here’s the deal!!!! Rihanna turned in her record 3 weeks ago and Def Jam hated it. She was so out there in left field pulling a Kelly Clarkson (My December) and making records that she wanted to make and not caring about what people thought. More rock edge and darker. She was passing on songs you guys would be flipping out over that were smashes. So La Ried went to his stable of writers to quickly come with something that could work as a first single. This is the best they could do because they already had a date. And this song showed her new and improved vocal ability, which she is determined to show on this record But it’s also why you see her going in and out of studios 2 weeks before her album goes to mastering. Most of the records she recorded earlier will not be heard. She does have a monster smash with Dream and Tricky. In the last 2 weeks they have been frantically looking for singles. She really was trying to pull a My December but LaRied was not about to let Rihanna go out like that. We see artist who become so big and want to take control of their music and it messes everything up. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t. She has a unique voice and tone, is striking and beautiful with and amazing sense of style that work for her, and has had an ear for songs that work for her. I applaud her for thinking outside the box. But it doesn’t always translate into #1 records. As for this song (I’ve been listening for an hour) after everything she has been through, Russian Roulette, which is never even mentioned in the song, is a little depressing. “Take the Gun and count to 3″ GEEEESH! Rihanna’s recent, tragic history ensures there’s more than a pop curiosity around the single, but she’s also been one of the industry’s fastest-rising stars. “Good Girl Gone Bad” spawned multiple hits, including the ubiquitous “Umbrella,” and has sold 2.5 million copes in the U.S., according to Nielsen SoundScan.

From the initial few listens on “Russian Roulette,” it’s clear that Rihanna isn’t going to play nice, nor does she appear to have any intention to shy from tough, violent subject matter. The song starts off with a moody guitar intro, followed by a steady heartbeat like bass line. From there Rihanna starts comparing love to Russian roulette, or at least that’s what I assume she’s doing. She’s definitely improved in the vocal department, delivering her lines with a raw mix of fragility and defiance.

From there the song continues to build and build, before finally reaching it’s explosive conclusion. The whole thing has a very epic feel to it, like a big budget Steven Spielberg movie or something.

I personally enjoyed the dark natured ballad and the fact that she’s so ambitious with her song concepts. The song is really moody with its haunting guitar opening and dark atmospheric undertones. I think the song is well produced and has a strong melody. It also sounds like it could be lifted from a James Bond soundtrack. The lyrics have a clever play on wording especially as she likens the ‘Russian Roulette’ game with the tale of a powerless and suicidal woman being controlled by an abusive man. One can even speculate that some of it is an indirect stab towards her past relationship with Chris Brown. My gripe is that some type of activist group may protest the song as an advocate for pro-suicide since the music ends abruptly with a sharp inhaled gasp & a single echoing gunshot. But overall, anyone who has encountered a relationship with hurt and pain can relate. I know I can. It illustrates a very vulnerable, emotional young woman with nothing but lost hope.

It’s totally not what I expected from Rihanna. I’ve just listened to the track nine times in a row and I think she really nailed it. I’ve always loved the way Rihanna interprets her songs and you can feel what she’s singing on “Russian Roulette.” Thumbs up RiRi, can’t wait to see the video.

Okay, I agree that people should not try to demonize Rihanna but peeps do the same thing to Beyonce. There are hundreds of videos all with the motivation to “expose” Beyonce as a demon worshipper. And a lot of it from Rihanna fans. Both sides go hard on each other for no reason because they see their artists are compeitition which is not the case.

What I will say is that it really gets on my nerves when people like you are constantly trying to put blame on others instead of taking personal responsibility for your own children. Why would you even expect a 21 year old pop star (or any other entertainer) to be a role model for your children? Her job is to sell records. Not to raise, influence, or impact your children to the point of having them want to emulate what she sings about in her songs. Parents need to be the ones molding the minds of their kids. If that means turning off the TV and radio and getting them to read a book then that’s what needs to happen. There will always be outside influences trying to take children down the wrong path. It’s up to you to prevent that. Not Rihanna. Maybe if people like you put as much effort into getting involved as you put into commenting on CL some of those kids you talked about could be helped.
Also if you know so much about kids and suicide you also know that the reason someone actually takes his/her own life has very little to do with what music they listen to & that depression is, at least in part, an inherited condition involving abnormalities in neurotransmitter functioning in the brain. So like I said before..go educate yourself. If you are working with at risk children and don’t know wth you are talking about you may be doing more harm than good.

Let’s get one thing clear. I am a Rihanna fan and I am not in her age group. I am 35 and I listen to her music just like the younger people on this post. Music is for everyone. I listen to several of her songs on my ipod while I work out. So don’t believe the hype that her fans are only children. Grown folks are listening too. Just because I don’t spend time on here arguing back and forth doesn’t mean I’m not a fan.

From an outsider’s perspective, the song literally focuses on suicide and the singer’s pain. @Furiousstyles, obviously there is a greater meaning to the song once you penetrate the lyrics. Unfortunately a lot of kids and adults might take it for its face value. I’ll leave my comment on the styling of the album cover alone.

@FuriousStyles, thank you for your commitment to those at risk. It’s definitely a job that requires a lot of patience, hope and strength. As you can tell from the passionate arguments that are being made, people are highly opinionated. We can only hope that Rihanna’s music will do more good than harm for her fans. These days music is music and it’s constantly evolving. Not always to be taken literally or lightly.

I’m a young person who LOVES Rihanna’s music. And my PARENTS raised me well enough to know that this song, Russian Roulette is not about “suicide”. The “GUN” is a METAPHOR about LOVE and taking Risks. Russian Roulette is not about Suicide per say it’s a GAME that is predicated on Risk just like LOVE is and I understand this at age 17. Why don’t you get this? I’m so sick of OLD people attacking music from our ICONS. Rihanna speaks for OUR generation and we DEMAND complex music that is well beyond “Put a Ring on It” or that Junk that C-Error sing about. Rihanna and Neyo have written a darker song (a masterpiece) that goes against the grain and that deal with real emotions and we love and appreciate ART.

This song don’t have anything to do with young men dying or women having 4 or 5 kids. Now if you want to fix what is in our community you need to reach the places where it is needed and people actually care. She reaches to all races and African Americans is not her main audience so this is not the person to pinpoint at the black community. Hip hop is where you need to start in discussing our community. If I was feeling suicidal I would get help from a doctor and it dam sure would not be over a SONG that is not how suicide works honey. This song is about strength and yes weakness it’s about the emotional ups and downs you can go on in a relationship and from this song you think about these things. It’s not about suicide it’s a SONG. You know my mother told me that people felt the same way about Elvis.
