@music lover, I think the reason why most caribbean people don’t do the music like soca, calypso, and reggae, is because if you look at the history, a few have tried this route, but its just not lucrative in mainstream america. How many Americans would really buy a strictly reggae or calypso album? Most of the caribbean artist, have to water down their sound or change it to appeal to the american audience. For example Sean Paul, The kind of Music Sean paul markets to America, is totally different from his usual hardcore dancehall sound, also Shaggy too. They had to infuse the music with a little pop and R and B to make it work. Many Caribbean People prefer the original Sean Paul sound, as well as the Hardcore Shaggy, So they necessarily would not pick up the americanized version of Sean Paul’s, music, but the strictly Jamaican one. Also for Shontelle, I personally think she sounds better singing her dancehall and Soca tinged songs, but when she did that song with Beenie man, how many americans even heard it. Look at Kevin Lyttle with his hot soca hit Turn me On, after that, you haven’t heard anything else about him in America, but he is still back home in St. Vincent making hits, but that type of music for some reason would not get played on the American Airwaves. In the Caribbean, however all types of Music is played, that is why Caribbean Artists sometimes venture into other sounds.

I personally know what it is these artists are doing, its marketing themselves to a wider audience. I do agree with meme when she says that caribbean artist would not sell as well if they release the sound out of the caribbean in its pure form. Although you say sean paul is selling well in the Uk, his music is still not in its original dancehall form that made him a big time artist in jamaica. Listen back to tunes like deport dem and so on his classics, and you will know that the songs that you are hearing from sean paul now, is not what caribbean people are used to, they like the dancehall hardcore sean paul, and he knows that, thats why when he put out a song for the caribbean market it sounds nothing like the ones released stateside.
