First of all this song is not promoting divorce. He’s simply stating what happened in his marriage that pushed him to the brink of divorce. He has legitimate reasons as to why they didn’t work out. It changed him completely, he abandoned his mother, he finally noticed that he was changing for the worse. How is it going to be an alter ego when it’s himself versus himself. Come one people. He’s probably referring to how he was before the marriage and what the marriage changed him into. He’s not bashing her, he’s singing about his experiences. He admits to still loving her, last time I checked you don’t bash people that you love, he’s not defaming her in any way. Usher is one of the best and no matter how much you hate it, this is going to be a hit, as will the album.

Let’s break this piece down: When a man says, “I’m dying” and “I done damn near lost my Momma, I done been through so much drama”…now that’s some heavy $#!T. We all remember when Usher fired his mother, Jonetta. Everyone on CL said he was making a big mistake and that she was the only one who had his back. So, he laid everything on the line and tried to make it work.

Unlike Bobby and Whitney is signing his papers early on. He wasn’t ready, but she probably wasn’t ready either. And, once you’ve died to one another, one preacher said, you may as well go on down to the court house and do your paperwork.

So, where does that leave “for better or worse, for richer or poorer, in sickness and in health, til death do us part?” He flew off to Las Vegas and Tameka flew off to Brazil. He was trying to live life in the fast lane and she was trying to turn back the hands of time. A two-way train wreck on a single track.

So, why would he write a divorce song? Well, like Eminem said, “This is what I do.” I think he leveled the playing field, admitted his faults and shared in the blame. He was fair. In the end, Usher says, “All my fellows up in here, if you had enough and you ready to sign, say: I’m ready” Then, he said, “All my ladies, if you sick and tired, and you ready to sign, say I’m ready!”

When it get’s to that point, its usually a mutual disfunction. A lot of thought went into that song. “Fightin like Dogs at Six in the Morning.” “I know there’s gonna be some more $#!T tonight” Passing a car

And, as far as the marrage changing him, well that’s what a marriage is suspose to do when two become one!!! The unity candle ceremony is a symbol of two indivuduals placing the flame from their seperate candle onto the third candle. Sure, he still has the voice and he’ll make more hits, but only a certain type of women will trust a man after he airs their dirty laundry. He may not be bashing the Tameka that he loved, but he let everyone know just how he felt about the Tameka that he didn’t like!

Usher would have sounded just as good singing about “Counciling” rather than “Papers”. Everyone knows Ushers still has it. Most of the great artist don’t lose it until they get in their 50s or sooner if they use too much drugs like Whitney. Usher is one of the great ones, but now he has one strike.

Tameka could have been the reason why he would made it to 50 and still have his chops. With his “Papers” in hand, he’s now free to party all night and lay down without guilt with anything that moves. Luther, Gerald and Michael all checked out early because there was no one there to keep them from the fast life.

Art imitates life, life imitates art. I can understand what you’re saying perfectly fine. I dig it. I also understand that music/art/books are normally autobiographical. I mean what’s the difference between this song and Maya Angelou “airing out” her dirty laundry with her brother molesting her in her book. Or Oprah doing the same? That was their way of dealing with their pain. Or any other autobiographical book in which they air out “their dirty laundry” and the participants who were involved in it. You don’t know the ins and outs of Usher’s relationship with Tameka. Not saying he was not in part to blame — should’ve made better choices and conducted himself better — but again, you don’t know the situation. So maybe he was depressed & had a hard time with the marriage just like Tameka did… Tameka handled her depression & then some by lashing out at blogs all of the time… he handled his thru music. She is profiting from this as much as he is b/c oops guess what? People are still talking about her, and that seems to be (my perception not saying it’s fact) what she wanted all along. @ the end of the day, all artists do the same. Tameka knows/ knew his secret so they came up with a marketing plan. The agreement was to get married and have 2 kids then it was agreed upon after 2 years they would get a divorce; that he would release an album about it. (See if you can locate their prenup)… Anyway Tameka is going to be splitting the profit from CD sells etc with usher 50/50 as long as she keeps her mouth close about the agreement. This is just the beginning they are going to come out to the public about (THE LIE) why their relationship didn’t work out. That’s why they are not talking about it to the public. They are currently in negotiations with certain NETWORKS/ MEDIA outlets on exclusives to the story. Nevertheless it’s not going to be as juicy as you may think, because they both agreed not to make the other party look bad because of their kids etc. I’m tired of typing… You’ll see soon though. Mmm, the song is OK but I have a feeling that Usher will have a lot of success this time around, contrary to what most on here say. People will really feel what he’s saying with this album(if it is indeed about his past marriage with Tameka). Plus i think all his young female fan base are coming back to him and they will support.
However, It’s impossible for him try to repeat the 2004 Usher- nobody gets that amount of success and hype twice. Take MJ’s Thriller for an example.

Well I’ve read all of the comment posts are they’re all interesting! Everyone is entitled to their opinion and this song and usher’s career choices will be an endless discussion, so basically we all agree to disagree.

Listen people the confessions album success wasnt planned. Things like that just happen but fate or chance. The only thing you can do as an artist is try to make good music for the world to listen to. They can’t predict if it will be pass/fail, so for us to compare every song he does to the confessions album isnt fair. How can we say it sounds repetitve or predictable but in the same breathe say its nothing like confessions. How can you want the same thing but want it to be different?

Ok ok I understand using divorce and his relationship issues to sell his records may not be acceptable to some but we all know in the back of ours heads we want to know the juicy gossip. If he were to release an album without any song about her then all of you would feel cheated. Hell you all bought confessions in part to hear the cheating and foul shit he did to chilli and yall still want that usher but frown upon the same formula when he discusses tameka.

For months the majority of you all dogged tameka and her looks and age and even stated that he’s washed up, he turned his back on family, and was trippin. None of you actually were going thru this but had every opinion on how he went wrong, so when the man who was actually living through it wants to discuss it he’s wrong?

In that song he states how the relationship was and how it failed and crumbled. Never once did he call her a bitch or hoe. The same things stated in that song would be the same comments as if he were on oprah, tom joyner, or talking to essence magazine. Yall say he foul for airing out his marriage in this song but we are the same people that run to these websites looking for the latest gossip on all of our celebs. We’re backwards… Why are we so ready to see him fail? We dont put this much scrutiny on t-pain, dream, or any other artist that gives you the same type of music each album. So why are we all looking for him to fail?

One last question is it more acceptable for female artist to air their biz thru music than men? We’re comforting when the woman has been hurt and she wants to discuss but not for the man??? ummmm ok???

This beat is stolen!!! Gorilla Zoe has the same beat for his song So Sick off his album Don’t Feed Da Animals….The song is ok but i kinda lost my interest in Usher with Here I Stand..and producers who dont know how to make new beats consistantly

Wow….I really thought I wasn’t going to like it, but surprisingly I did.

The light-bulb finally went off in his head that what all the blogs and his family and friends were telling him were true. It wasn’t going to last. It’s sad for a marriage to end, but when it didn’t even start off right, what other outcome could there truly be?

I really like this though. Now Usher, if you can give us this great music consistently, not just when you’ve screwed up then I would feel you are 100% relevant again. These young boys are coming at you, so consistentcy is the key. Also Quality or Quantity is not only what your fans look for, but we demand because your fans (me included) stuck by you during all of your relationship woes, so we Thank You for this.

And, why is everyone acting like Usher shouldn’t speak his mind??? Tameka is in the new Ebony magazine talking about the marriage, like it wasn’t all that anyway. She may be a stylist, but she knows she wanted new clientele!!!!! Marrying Usher was not for love and I am not speaking on Blogs. They did not carry themselves like a married couple. The first, I say…6 months, they were always together. Then you see her partying in EVERY club like she didn’t have a care in the world. I know they have nannies, but when was she EVER with her CHILDREN??? That was the only main gripe i had with the relationship. She seemed like she felt as if she “arrived” and now she was going to Live it up. She and Usher were NOT READY!!! I truly think he was just trying to save face by marrying her becuase she was pregnant. She is not an ugly woman, but women know other women and men know the way other men think. As soon as I saw them photo’d together, I FELT he was about to be used. Usher seems as if he tried to stay in it just because he was being rebellious, but this decision had him kicking himself all the way to the courthouse. They both need to learn from this, move on and stay cordial for the kids. PERIOD.

I always thought Tameka had “something” on Usher which is why he agreed to marry her. She was part of his backroom camp and probably saw a lot of stuff that he would never want to get out to his fan. I always believed this marriage was a “arrangment for damage control”. I remember reading about high profile male stars in the 40s and 50s like James Dean, Montgomery Cliff and Steve McQueen having to “give in” to powerful gay directors and producers in order to get choice roles and put their career on the fast track. I believe I read that Steve McQueen looked at these “favors” as a necessary evil but was not happy about it and never, ever wanted it to “leaked” out to the public especially with the type of roles he use to play. A lot of that information stayed buried until they past away and old girlfriends, actors, actresses put them on blast in their books. And some old hollywood actors were gay but was encouraged by the studio heads to marry or it would ruin their career. Just something to thing about………the “casting couch” was alive and well back then and it the same way in the music business today, which is also dominated by a lot of powerful gay men. (and for those non-history buffs - if you don’t know what the “casting couch is” google it.
