NEWS: D.C. STUDENTS PROTEST TEACHER LAYOFFS

Thursday, October 1, 2009

Students from four D.C. public high schools walked out of class earlier this week and met at the school system’s headquarters Monday because they’re angry about the way they say their teachers are being treated with impending layoffs recently announced by D.C. Schools Chancellor Michelle Rhee.

The layoffs are the result of the city council’s recent freeze of the school budget, which forced the students to also rally against Mayor Adrian Fenty, who said he was impressed with their show of civic action.

Thats wassup taking it on themselves to try and save their teacher’s jobs, I’m really proud of them. Most teachers can’t even afford the cost of living, but we expect them to just deal with that and continue doing their job, while the city spends 10 million dollars to repair a stadium (I’m speaking in generalities).

The mayor is impressed ok well get off your ass and figure out how to keep their jobs.

Shout out to all the teachers. Teachers often spend their own money on students and classroom supplies. Teachers sometimes have to deal with rude children, even ruder parents, and an administration that often doesn’t support them.

This is very positive and powerful that children really do care about their education. I am happy to see this!

If only our students would have done this in California. Those layoffs were serious! 10,000 teachers…gone!

Good For Them!!!! …. its “Light It Up” all up in this B****!!!

Teachers are far to valuable to be laying off left and right like that. What do they expect these kids to do with a proper education??? If they keep that up, they are going to have an even BIGGER problem on their hands when these kids gotta find other means to make money and support themselves and families…

Umm… they need to go ahead and let Chancellor Rhee and Fenty do their job that noone else wanted to do.. If they prefer, uneducated, or teachers who do not even have a college degree teaching their kids… I don’t know what hte heck to say about them…They are fighting a battle that they don’t even know much about. They just know that their teacher is being layed off.. Check 2 see the reasoning… Kudos to Rhee and Fenty!

@12 I was one of the students there and we know that this is to get rid of bad teachers without the union, but it shouldn’t be left up to our Principals to decide who should get “RIF’ed” and who shouldn’t. They also had the time to do it before school started. They also don’t say they are replacing the teachers which means that what we were complaining about was valid. We were protesting the fact that our class sizes would get bigger, we would have to get schedule changes, and that this is not the way to go about getting rid of teachers. Instead of having a principal decide who should go or not, it should be a committee who sits in classrooms and sees who the “bad” teachers are or maybe even let the students have a say because we are the ones who sit in the classrooms everyday and know which teachers help us actually learn and which teachers don’t. So before you say we didn’t know what we were doing maybe you should watch the video and listen to what our complaints were instead of trying to write us off as ignorant.

Also @post12 “Itdoesntmatter.” Instructors that have been given the label of “bad teachers” really should be labeled as teachers who were NOT given the RESOURCES to complete their job effectively.

Under Mayor Fenty and Chancellor Rhee’s reign or should I say DICTATORSHIP they have not addressed issues of school safety/violence and have sold SEVERAL of the cities school buildings to developers for retail and condo space.

And what’s the result?

Mayor Fenty has over 3 million dollars in the bank a year before his re-election campaign with over 60% of that money coming from those same developers or folks with business ties to developers.

What in the hell does this have to do with challenges for school teachers?

As if school safety/violence wasn’t already a big enough issue in DC Public Schools. Closing down schools and forcing the merger of students from different neighborhoods and turfs has caused school VIOLENCE TO SOAR. Mayor Fenty and Chancellor Rhee’s response to this has been little to none: they’ve reduced school security and at some schools with 900+ students there are only 3-4 counselors available to deal with behavior issues (not to add these counselors also have to hand scheduling, college admission, internships for students, etc.) Also many students with severe behavior problems also require one-to-one special education services….and those same schools with 900+ students have only ONE special education coordinator.

Mayor Fenty and Chancellor Rhee are expecting TEACHERS and other DCPS personnel to basically be magicians and raise test scores…in an environment where they have little support to do so. The whole concept of it takes a village to raise a child applies to learning and academic achievement…other than lots of rhetoric and superficial public relations Mayor Fenty and Chancellor Rhee have NOT given DCPS teachers or students the resources needed to reach academic achievement.

I am very proud of my hometown young people for speaking up and speaking out. They are supporting the teachers to ensure that no bull crap takes place right under their noses.

They are brilliant young people with bright futures, including my son who is also a student of the D.C. school system. He loves his teachers because they respect their students and give their students what they need to succeed in their future endeavors so I am quite happy.

God Bless the D.C. school system that no one will be able to get away with any underhanded mess!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, thought she was going be able to fire some teachers so she could bring in her brand of teachers, no doubt - but that one won’t get away with it…this is D.C., and we don’t sleep and let shit go unnoticed or unspoken. Look out cause our young minds are coming to get you all so you may wanna start doing right now before you see yourself out of that position.

Being born and raised in D.C. and a graduate from an Washington D.C. Public schools it’s pretty f’d up.

There is alot to deal with as far as safety, lack of consuelors, TEACHERS THAT REALLY DO CARE TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE AND NOT JUST THERE FOR A CHECK, about 900 students. Am serious D.C. school system is f’d up. There’s a strong need for change. I still live in D.C. and only been out for about 2 years now, I don’t think the Michelle Rhee isn’t doing anything about this situation, espically firing teachers when it’s hard as hell to find any. I remember sitting in class becasue my teachers weren’t at work sometimes fours days, two streets straight somtimes. And I remember crowed classrooms. And that was two years ago and there’s still no change. Like seriously. F’d up is not enough to descrip this.

As I go to work or class curing the day I continually see kids in the street when they should be in school and I tell them to go, because I care.

That’s proberly some magent school anyways never the less they still deal with the same problems as the public schools. Am just at a lost for words because this is chornic situation in the D.C. public schools and it’s never been fix!

Washington, DC Mayor Adrian Fenty is slowly but surely becoming Kwame Kilpatrick. American do not be fooled by the images you saw of Mayor Fenty and Obama sharing a hot dog in Ben’s Chilli Bowl. Over the last few months the Obama camp has kept a good distance from Fenty and co. foreshadowing the doom (criminal indictiment) soon to come.

Know that Adrian Fenty was almost disbarred as an attorney for stealing money from seniors citizens he represented.

Know that his wife Michelle Fenty mismanaged and pocketed money through the Anacostia Waterfront Commission,

Know that our current police chief Cathy Ramsey was promoted to her position for covering up domestic disputes between Fenty and his wife when Fenty was a councilmember.

Know that Adrian Fenty paid a community group Peaceholics lead by his childhood friend/convicted felow Ron Moten over $10 million dollars in city contracts to work in DC Public Schools while a member of Peaceholics staff who was a convicted MURDERER was allowed in a DC Public High School to work with children and sexually assulated a 15 year old girl in a school basement…and was recently sentenced as a result.

Know that a member of Fenty’s staff David Jannorne and his frat brother Sinclair Skinner are currently under investigation for illegally sending a city firetruck and ambulance to Sousa, Dominican Republic in exchange for free stays at a SEX RESORT.

Know that Adrian Fenty allows friends and family members to drive city owned vehicles and when questioned by reporters he responds, “I can do it, because I’m the mayor.”

Know that Adrian Fenty has accepted “pay for play” free trips, private jets from developers, the government of Dubai for and his family.

Know that Adrian Fenty is has used the power of his office to get his mistress/personal assistant and her children into new condo developments despite her having terrible, terrible credit.

Um that video isnt working anymore. I just grad from DCPS High School and in two of my classes there was not a permanent teacher throughout the entire school year. It was really frustrating how they changed substitute teachers every week and we never did anything but sit around in class for almost 2 hours. Then things in class would get “out of hand” loud talking, conflicts etc. and everyones pointing the finger at the childer for bad behavior. Well maybe if we had something productive to do like learning which we go to school for, instead of sitting around things would not get hectic. They also did this really remedial thing at the beginning of the school year once when we couldnt go outside for lunch and ate in the class. Which lead to trash everywhere and rats and roaches, and more conflict in the classes, and impatient teachers. But we of course protested and went outside anyways. Michelle Rhee tried to turn DCPS into some sort of jail. I know asians are strict with their children when it comes to learning but honestly they need to plan out things better and give it time instead of rushing. They also need to communicate to the students whats going on.

Damn this is sad but not surprising. When you live in a country were actors, musicians and athletes get paid more than teachers, doctors and civil servants… what else can you expect. Our nation in general has to do better because this problem is bigger than DC public schools but unfortunately they (like many others) have to suffer because of it. Sad…. really sad.

Listen, what schools were closed that resulted in the SOARing school violence you speak of? Only one high school was closed under Rhee (MM Washington) and two more were built (Phelps and Youth Engagement Academy). Only middle school I know of that closed is Hine, but those kids went to Elliot which didn’t affect most kids b/c the highest population of kids attending Hine lived closer to Elliot anyway.

Just curious what instance you were referring to. Can’t imagine elementary school violence has gotten bad due to school closures.

@26. My former school is closed, The Academy of Finance and Business at H. D. WOODSON SENIOR HIGH. I graduated class of 2003 with honors. Do your research before you open your mouth.

There was so much violence going on during my years there, I can imagine now that the schools have merged. Smh
