NEWS: PRESIDENT OBAMA AWARDED THE ‘09 NOBEL PEACE PRIZE
Friday, October 9, 2009
President Obama was awarded the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize today. The first African-American to win the White House, Obama was praised by the Norweigan Nobel Committee for “his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples.” The announcement came as a surprise — Obama’s name had not been mentioned among front-runners — and reporters in the room gasped when he was named.
Here is what was said about The President at the announcement event:
“Only very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world’s attention and given its people hope for a better future,” the committee said. “His diplomacy is founded in the concept that those who are to lead the world must do so on the basis of values and attitudes that are shared by the majority of the world’s population.”

This decision was out of the blue, but I’m really glad he was chosen. As usual, people have started complaining already, saying he hasn’t been president for long enough (2 weeks by the time he was nominated). The prize isn’t for being president, it’s for bringing so many different people together worldwide.

@9 Hunny, the world has been at our throat for the 8 years Bush was in office. This man came and united cultres and peoples all over the world and basically turned our image around in a short amount of time, which in turn will be the offset for disdain, terrorism, etc. in the future if he keeps it up. Whether people agree or disagree, you live here, and he’s your President, so it’s a positive reinforcement on your country. Get a clue.

Absolutely ridiculous decision.
You think of the Nobel Peace Prize and you think of Martin Luther King, Mandela/De Klerk, Mother Theresa, Gorbachev, Walesa, Amnesty International etc.
And now Obama? It makes no sense.
Ig f they are so sure he will bring peace to the World, why not wait a few years ’til he’s actually done it; then give him the Award.
Makes sense, no?

Friday, October 9, 2009 /
@ 23, no! did you actually read the statement as to why he was awarded? doesn’t sound like, the nobel peace prize is about more than what meets the eye. obama has done a whole lot already and he as achieved many things already too. one of the most important ones is the image americans have internationally. people actually speak of americans without rolling their eyes, something that was hatrdly seen during the bush era.
he deserves it alone for restoring millions of peoples faith in democracy, making politics “cool” and interesting for young people, bringing people hope. eventually that’s what all the people you mentioned did, they brought hope to the lives of the people…
CONGRATS Obama!!!!

Are you blinded? This is so premature for him to be getting this award. This award was not based on concrete achievements. How can you get an award like this for future initiatives???
The votes for the Prize were due February 1st. He didn’t become president until January 20th…….Come on now
I voted for barack obama and everything but now I just don’t know……..whatever

folks are ignorant and say anything. He was awarded the prize because of what he accomplished, which was being the first Black person to be elected to the highest office in the land. That’s the accomplishment, not necessarily how his presidency goes over the next 4 years.

MVEX, if you believe that, then fair enough.
But the majority of the right-thinking world finds that to be esoteric reasoning.
You can spin it however you want to but Obama could not even broker peace between Henry Louis Gates and Sgt. James Crowley.
So if he failed to inspire two American citizens to make peace, it is beyond foolishness to say he has restored faith in democracy to the rest of the World.

Obama is deserving of this honor. It is not necessarily based on events that have occurred as a result of his presidency but the tone of his presidency. He conveys a message of equality and peace… he is not rash in making decisions but patient to ensure a solid outcome. Those who made the decision to give him this prize did so based upon certain criteria, and to judge the motives behind their decision is shoddy
Good job Obama, now you have to live up to this title. God bless you
and why would Michael jackson win this…he brought excitement to the world not necessarily peace. His music allowed us to break down certain barriers but it did not unite us as a nation. Though I do love him.

Not raining on his parade or anything, but….c’mon…this is somewhat of a groupie decision. He really hasn’t DONE anything. If the Nobel Peace Prize is about rewarding EFFORTS then they should have a lot more awards to pass out and effort is not a completed action. In everything that he does he is watching out for America, not humanity. But what else can I say? He already has the award now. Make the most of it I guess. Congrats on the accomplishment

The greatest and BIGGEST change Obama has done for this country is ONE being elected our first BLACK president(giving inspiration to many blacks that feel that was a dream that will only be witness in movies or on tv). TWO..HE HAS OPEN DOORS for many blacks that may have felt they would never be in such a HIGH resepected position as being PRESIDENT. And last but not least BRINGING ALL PPL together that I believe no one other then MLK had the power to do, thats a huge and tremendous accomplishment that alot of ppl especially BLACKS obviously are beginning to forget.

Maybe b/c he was the most charitable pop star donated to over 39 charties (which is documented in the Guinness World Records), Created songs to raise poverty awareness ” We are the World” set up a Scholar Ship for the United Negro Fund, Established the heal the world foundation, donated tickets to underprivileged children held concerts where all the proceedings went to Childhelp USA. Yeah the list Goes on just throwing that out there. Nobel peace prize is not only about uniting US Nation but the world.

i like obama a lot but I don’t think he deserved this award. to put him on the same level as mlk as ridiculous. yes, he got elected. great, but this is the nobel peace prize award. i haven’t seen him do anything extraordinary that has fostered peace. someone mentioned that, for the first time since bush, people don’t roll their eyes at americans. is that really a reason to win this award? bush was a complete idiot that was handed his accomplishments (i.e. going to an ivy, being president) and people around the world hated him. he was such a low point that we could only go up from there- even if hilary was our president, the international community would have seen us in a better light.
i mean congrats to him but i’m sure even he knows he hasn’t accomplished nearly enough. i see a lot of people on this board stand by the decision yet have no concrete reasons as to why he should win it. please list something

I dont agree with this award and I voted for Obama, I feel like its the Forbes list or something because they gave him top honor for intending to do something. The list of people he was nominated with was more deserving and the nominations for the Peace Prize was in February, which means he was in office for only a month when he was nominated. For people in here saying this President hasn’t done anything yet to deserve the award..I ask you this, WTF have you done with your life other then sitting on this blogsites all day judging others? Some of you dont even know what the Nobel Peace prize is for and what it represents. The Prize is not just about accomplishments but for people who had a dream that was larger then perception and worked towards that dream. Obama has done that. Regardless of what you think of his policies, one cannot dispute the impact his presence and election victory had on others here and abroad. For the past decade America has been frowned down upon…at least this Presidents presense has enstilled new hope…and in this atmosphere that is victory within itself. Then giving Obama the Nobel Peace prize is a slap in the face to Republicans who claim this President practicing diplomacy is not going to work. At least he is trying to make steps in the right direction.

It seems like a lot of misinformation is being spread in this thread.
First of all…What list of candidates for the Nobel Peace Prize are certain people referring to?? To my knowledge, the Nobel committee “does NOT release the names of any candidates and keeps records sealed for 50 years.” So for the people saying there are more deserving people on the “list”….WTH are you talking about??
Second and most importantly… AND I QUOTE…”More often, the prize is awarded to encourage those who receive it to see the effort through, sometimes at critical moments.” So for the people saying that he hasn’t accomplished enough to qualify for the prize, you dont even know what the Nobel Peace Prize is…He is receiving this prize not only for his past achievements (many) but also to encourage him to do the many great things he WILL do in the future.

In honesty, the only reason he got the award is because he’s the first black president of the US, which is an accomplishment albeit not necessarily worthy of this award. However, I’m not mad about it because it’s not that serious, a bit surprising but whatever.
When I read these comments, some people place far too many responsibilities and expectations on Obama. I’m sure there are a number of reasons for this, but at the end of the day Obama is just a man. I don’t see how he’s proven himself to be any worse..so far…than the bulk of the other presidents and, likewise, I don’t believe he has proven himself..yet…to be any better. A politician is a politician and a man is just a man. I figure if he doesn’t make things worse while he’s president…job fairly well done.
Speaking of Obama, I saw him compared to Hitler on a local televised radio show today. Granted, I live in AL and I expected it but still…

This doesn’t surprise me at all. Notable figures in this society do not perform works to establish an image, their image is established so that they can perform their works. The Nobel Peace prize is an award received for loyal service. It has nothing to do with establishing “peace”, because the definition of “peace” to the elite is not the same definition that the average person might have. If you destroy the enemy, you have brought “peace”. Obama, like MLK, is a pawn and his job is to do his part in establishing ORDER, which is what “peace” is. The man has escalated the war in the Middle East, bombed Pakistan his first day in office, and has made no bones about his devout loyalty to the state of Israel (who’s intent is to destroy all opposition worldwide). This is why he received this award, the same way that MLK received it for being a pawn who brought his people under the influence of the white mainstream, or how Mandela agreed to sell out his people so that the white man could take control of the diamond mines in South Africa.

Although as a black man im proud to see another black person do something great, i think that a lot of people are confusing his achievements in becoming America’s first black president with his global influence. The Nobel peace prize is supposed to be won by someone who actually changed the way the world worked for the better, and unfortunately i dont think improving race relations in the US or the image of the US is enough. I have faith that in future he will hopefully live up to this, but for now i think that this award was premature and that there were probably better candidates who affected the world more positively.

I really don’t understand what he did to even be nominated, much less, win this award. It’s great that we have a black president but so far, there have been ZERO results, so I don’t get this one little bit.

Obama has as president created a new climate in international politics. Multilateral diplomacy has regained a central position, with emphasis on the role that the United Nations and other international institutions can play. Dialogue and negotiations are preferred as instruments for resolving even the most difficult international conflicts.”
The committee added, “Only very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world’s attention and given its people hope for a better future.”
In comments at the White House on Friday, Obama said he did not view the award “as a recognition of my own accomplishments. But rather as an affirmation of American leadership. … I will accept this award as a call to action.”

The pressure’s on, Obama! This isn’t so much about what he has done, it’s about the world saying they support the direction he’s going in. He hasn’t served a year yet. All we can do is hope that as time goes by we’ll see his positive vision come to pass. God bless him.

To those who questioned why President Obama was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
“Only very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world’s attention and given its people hope for a better future,” the committee said in its citation. “His diplomacy is founded in the concept that those who are to lead the world must do so on the basis of values and attitudes that are shared by the majority of the world’s population.

I think it’s wonderful that our current president won this great award, but hes been in office 10 months, I think it’s a little soon for this prize! Al thought the US foreign policy is definitely on the up side, its no where near how it should be.

Why all these haters on TV. The man is blessed and its obvious god is with him and god really enjoys Obama cause he keeps getting blessed and others just don’t understand why. Get over it! What God has for him it is for him and no one can take that away from him. He has done enough for God to bless him with this award and God also see’s the future and knows that this Nobel Peace prize belongs to him.

I’M SHOCKED AND AMAZED AT THE PEOPLE ON THIS SITE SAYING THE NOBEL PEACE PRIZE IS A JOKE AND OBAMA HASN’T DONE ANYTHING TO DESERVE THIS AWARD. I BELIEVE THOSE COMMENTS ARE COMING MOSTLY FROM BLACK AMERICANS WHO ARE UNEDUCATED AND ARE NOT AWARE OF THE GLOBAL IMPACT OBAMA HAS. YOU SHOULD REALLY TRAVEL MORE AROUND THE WORLD. THEN YOU MIGHT UNDERSTAND WHY HE WAS GIVEN THIS HONOR AND WHY HE IS IN FACT VERY DESERVING OF IT.

You know, I’m still waiting for Obama to do something and stop talking game! I didn’t vote for him because I had no confidence he could do the job, I didn’t vote and all because I did not believe in either candidate (first time I have done that since I gained the right to vote). It’s 10 months down the line and I have not changed my mind at all because there’s been nothing but talk. At the very least, could he not start bringing soldiers home? Every time I hear one of them has been killed I just SMDH!

Even Obama himself has said, that he felt undeserving of winning the Nobel Prize and that he did not think that he won it because of his own accomplishments. And I agree with him, he was not deserving of this award,he had only been in office for 12 days, when he was first nominated for the award by the Nobel committee, and that`s not enough time to accomplish something major enough to win this award.

I get it,I understand why the international world supports and gave Barack this award,it`s because they like his long ass speeches, but when the inernational world starts to find out, like how many Democrats have, that Barack is not God and that all he does is talk and give speeches they will stop supporting him.

I think the committee will be more than happy that they gave him this award when he leaves office. Now is when you see all the people who were just on the Obama bandwagon this time last year, they really dont have any faith in him. I still think he will do a good job.

Congrats to Obama, I think. When there is world peace, you know the end time is very near. Read your bibles, its all coming true evermore these days. Read for yourself dont take anybody else’s word for it and stop relying on preaching and books about the Bible alone. You have to read The Bible day and night, for real, even if its one verse at a time. The best way to do so is read to a bible on tape or go to biblegateway.com and listen and read. It really drives it inward better and you read alot more faster. So sad that when a black president gets into office, the world has to end.

Some of you stupid ignorant black/African Americans are so ridiculous.
I as an African born am so proud of Obama, he was the first black president of the Harvard Law Review. He was a community organizer in Chicago before earning his law degree. He worked as a civil rights attorney in Chicago and taught constitutional law at the University of Chicago Law School from 1992 to 2004. And on top of all of his accomplishments, he is the first African/biracial/black president all roll into one.
So for some of you to say that he does not deserve this , is certainly without merit. Al Gore won for doing a documentary on global warming, i do not recall hearing people put him down for it. But some of you black Americans do not like to see yourselves in a positive light, unless it is acting the fool on the six o’clock news. I am guessing that Obama is too much of a positive influence in the black community, no sagging pants, no grills , no bashing in school kids heads etc. OBAMA KENYA AND THE WHOLE OF AFRICA ARE PROUD OF YOU, MUCH BLESSING FROM THE ANCESTORS.
