Rihanna may be playing a dangerous game on her first single, “Russian Roulette,” but the man who produced the eerie ballad, Chuck Harmony, explains that when he and songwriter Ne-Yo sat down to conceptualize the feel of the track they wanted to take Rihanna’s musical vibe to a new level. They didn’t want to rehash what fans expect of the singer.

“We wanted to give her a movie. We didn’t want to just give her a three-minute song,” Harmony told MTV News. “I felt musically like everybody was gonna give like that ‘Disturbia,’ ‘SOS,’ kind of pop, uptempo stuff, and I really wanted the song that me and Ne-Yo did to stand out.”

Ne-Yo co-wrote the track with Rihanna, but when he sat down with Harmony, the producer said the two guys knew that the song should be “something a little darker, something a little edgier, something a little more morbid. Just to try it out.”

They recorded the track over the summer, and when it came down to picking a single for Rated R, out on November 23, it was an easy choice not only for the label but also for the singer.

“Rihanna phoned in to Ne-Yo to tell him that it was one of her favorites,” Harmony explained. “I think overall she was comfortable with the vibe of the song and comfortable with the lyrical content of the song. She loves the song.”

While he didn’t go into details about what he thinks the song might be about, he did say that no matter what song Rihanna released as her comeback single people would immediately think it was about Chris Brown.

“Because that’s the newest situation,” Harmony explained. “Whatever she came with, if she came out with ‘I still love you’ that would have been about Chris Brown. If she came out with ‘I hate your dog’ that would have been about Chris Brown, too. It’s just a natural reaction for people to associate ’cause she’s been so tight-lipped.”

Harmony is aware that the reaction has been mixed from fans who’ve heard the track. But he thinks singles should be about showing artistic growth, not feeding people the music that they expect.

“As a producer, I feel that’s what’s wrong with the music business, their first singles don’t shock people,” he said. “You’re in a whole other space in life, so your first single should reflect that growth or that setback. I think with ‘Russian Roulette’ she’s digging much deeper into her emotions. I knew she was going to another place an artist.
“If I had to speculate, I would speculate that [she released it] for shock value,” he continued. ” ‘Russian Roulette’ is the kind of song that when you hear it you’re gonna talk about it — whether you like it, you talk about it. It’s so unexpected, from the tempo to the title to the feel.”

I think that the song is not speaking of suicide literally but it gives that impression. Like many of Ne-yo songs they speak of some sort of love. Songs like “Take A Bow” for instance people would say its about a staged relationship in which Russian Roulette is about a dangerous relationship where she feels that she cannot leave. This supposedly led to the death of two guys from Nevada (before their deaths each drank alcohol and smoked weed at a playground of a church while supposedly hearing one of the Judas Priest songs during their deaths). They were taken to trial yet acquitted of the accusations. Led Zeppelin were also falsely accused of having evil words in their songs (instead of Stairway to Heaven it was Here’s to my Sweet Satan). Things like these have always existed so I wouldn’t take what Tiffany Evans says seriously but I do agree to some extent. I wouldn’t say the whole industry is run by the devil but that secretly people are being controlled to put out evil things. A lot of times bad things happen and that leads to individuals finding a more positive lifestyle. If you guys also listen to Rock music, well mainly metal, than you should know that bands like Metallica and Slayer (Slayer still does today) early in their careers basically wrote lyrics based on evil stuff and sometimes included the word satan. People can have their conspiracy theories about Rihanna’s songs but yeah this song is obviously to attract attention not to bring followers of satan and have people to believe they should commit suicide. If she was saying that she actually worships the devil then yeah I would be shocked and appalled but for now until famous people start saying worship satan I will recommend that people stop being so naive and believing most of what they hear.

What I see today with some artists like Jay and Rihanna (stylist, writers, and producers making her image) is that they are using some of the styles of past music like punk, metal, death, and rock basically and incorporating this “all black everything” style because they are trying to use them to create this new image for themselves. I wouldn’t call it the work of the devil because it is just what always happens with styles (the stud belts once used by hardcore punks now being purchased by self conscious followers at Hot Topic stores or by “fashion forward” people all over their clothes or sunglasses OR the mohawk styles once used by the same punk rockers and metal followers now used by artists in interesting ways or by soccer fiends who idolize Christiano Ronaldo). I would call it more of a rebel/renegade style/image approach to the music being heard on the radio towards the past decade. Jay being the one influenced and Rihanna being this image created by people influenced by Alexander Mcqueen, Mason Martin Margiela and Gareth Pugh (Dark style fashion). I think some of these things are used because the person finds this and adds it to their style because they are just intrigued by these things not because they have been taken over by satan.

Somebody mentioned Lady Gaga and how she hung from a rope during her performance at the VMA’s and the Kanye/Taylor incident. Gaga obviously wanted attention because death had to do with the song paparazzi (in a non suicidal way) and Kanye was just being controlled that night by demons (that hennessey can be your best friend but in reality bring out the worst of you). I have no disrespect for both artists. I personally don’t know any of these people to believe that they believe in Satan or to judge them because of their personality. You know despite the fact that Gaga supports Gay people I can’t also say she is being controlled by the devil to help promote gay marriage, make it legal everywhere, and turn society into a state of anarchy, turning children against their parents and people against somebody on the adherent or opposing side. People are seriously saying that and its sad because they truly don’t see the reality of things or the real message and chose to be mislead into believing that something is wicked and making themselves look ignorant. A lot of people take many things too seriously to the point that they chose to do or say something so bad about an individual like calling them a “no talent bitch” or “gay fish” (grow up losers). I have my beliefs like everyone else and if somebody who is functioning normal choses to support one thing or say something else I highly doubt it is because they want somebody to be harmed or society to be against each other unless something was mentally wrong with them.

People who think this song is about suicide are FAR from truth. Russian Roulette was never about suicide but about TAKING A RISK. Just because there’s a gun shot at the end of the song doesn’t mean some commits a suicide – but that he lost. Of course we do not encourage anyone to it since it’s like the most stupid game of all time… but Rihanna doesn’t encourage as well!

A “gun” means our CHOICE (which as we all should know is also a heavy kind of gun and can make a lot of damage as well – it depends how we use it). You got to make sure you are taking the right path so you need to think about it before using it. There will always come the time when it will be YOUR TURN TO GO and choose (so use the “gun” in “russian roulette”).

I’m not advocating that the Music Industry is not depraved at times. Sure they are! Tiffany does speak from experience especially when talking about how they had trouble marketing her. I think more so because of her age that her image. But I respect her for those types of comments. I was deciding whether I wanted to comment in here or not, or just read what everyone had to say. Here are my 2 cents:

I’ve seen some people on here calling those who aren’t grasping the concept of Rihanna worshipping satan, etc.. “retarded”, “idiots”, etc… To a ceratin extent I would be defensive too if someone came at me like that about how I feel about something , whether it’s founded or not. But the point is, you can’t MAKE someone grasp something that doesn’t want to or who simply doesn’t believe in what you’re saying. That’s like trying to beat scripture down a non-believer’s throat. It’s not Christ-like at all because Christ Himself didn’t beat the Truth over people’s heads. He gave them a CHOICE. The TRUTH is the truth whether people believe it is or not. And the TRUTH doesn’t need to be defended. It defends itself once its stated. Whether a person agrees with it or not doesn’t validate it.

My other point is, some are saying “where does Rihanna say that she worships satan”? If you were a thief, would you go around telling people that you were one? Of course not. And if you all knew who satan truly was, you’d know that he doesn’t parade himself around as Captain Obvious. His desire is to steal and to kill and to destroy. Why would he make that OBVIOUS?

Final point: Remove the fact, for a minute that this is Rihanna. If another artist or a heavy metal band was singing this SAME song, would you still listen to it? Would you still defend it? I would venture to say that you wouldn’t. Rihanna has an APPEAL (i.e. her looks) that some folks just can’t get past and that is no coincidence. You’re not going to be drawn to something that is not appealing to you and the devil knows that. It’s up to you on what you choose to believe.

I hate to break this to you but the Bible is created and written by men and unless you can show me “proof” that some divine force created the Bible I suggest you shut up.
