EVENT PICS: JAY-Z ATTENDS “FELA!” OPENING NIGHT IN NYC
Tuesday, November 24, 2009

Media Mogul Jay-Z attends the opening night party for "Fela!" on Broadway at Gotham Hall on Monday (November 23) in New York City.
Jay-Z actually teamed up with Will & Jada Pinkett Smith (who didn’t show up to the opening night) by joining the producing team of the play. The Broadway musical is based on the life and music of African composer and performer Fela Anikulapo-Kuti (who we have done a Black History Spotlight on in the past).

I saw the previews last year and it was one of the freshest things I’ve seen in a long while. It’s one of those experiences that after you become an instant advocate so with that said if you’re in NYC do yourself a favor and check it out

Ooh Mr Carter, he’s been supa dupa smartly dressed these days, i love it when he puts them baggy jeans on the side, Bee is one lucky chick. And by the way, with such famous people behind this project, i feel like “FELA” didn’t get enough press, i just heard of it two days ago. He was the African JAMES BROWN for me, i’d love to see it !

HOW MANY TIMES??????????
“AFRICA” is N O T an effin country… you’d think maybe an urban blog could digest that…and stop using “African” when they can use the specific country. Do you say he such and such is the European etc… or the South American Shakira?
FELA KUTI IS FROM NIGERIA
GET IT?
GOT IT?
WE GOOD?

Jay’s looking so distinguished. He’s definitely about his business. And there are no words for how much I’d love to see this play. We as AA, in general, know so little about Africa. I think I read somewhere that most slaves brought to the America’s are from the west coast, with Yorubi heritage. The play looks entertaining & inspiring. Great post!

I thought the only reason why they gave money was b/c it was about to not end up on Broadway. I love how they make it seem like so much was invested into it, this is just publicity for him and then they can bring the youngins in or those not familiar with their names attached to it. I guess everyone wins.

At about five minutes to curtain last night….the audience erupts into this thunderous applause. I’m looking around like ‘ oh shit…is it Mandela? Maybe Bishop Tutu? lol. It was Jay. QUITE an interesting moment in Broadway history. Sat what you want about J…but him, Alicia Keys, Jada Pinkett Smith, Quest Love…are all stepping up to the plate…ensuring that this all-too-important story gets told. As someone who worked on the show….I have NEVER seen people work harder at bringing a vision to light!
Thanks for covering this Angel. so few outlets are giving it or the stars the props they deserve. I do wish there were shots on the folks who worked on the show…but hey if seeing Jay is gonna put butts in the seats….do the damn thing!
If you’re in NY and you don’t see this play you’ve missed out on Bill T Jones vision of a cultural icon unsung. Fela was and is one of the most innovative musicians in the world….who was unapologetic in his manner, in his love for Nigeria and ALL of Africa….in his love of women….in his belief in the Orisas….
This man was such an important addition to the fabric of music and the legacy of activism. And Sahr and Kevin (both alternating the role of Fela Kuti) are phenomenal. Black folk, please come out and be a part of history. We MUST keep this on Broadway as long as possible. When is the last time you saw so many powerful beautiful black folk on stage together…NOT TAP DANCING and shuffling…but UNAPOLOGETICALLY BLACK, AFRICAN and BEAUTIFUL!
And if you don’t see the play…or can’t….get his music and get the message!
FELA NA PRESIDENT! FELA NA PRESIDENT!
