‘ROUND THE WAY: DID SAMMY SOSA BLEACH HIS SKIN? HIS FRIEND SAYS NO

So a hot topic on the blogs right now is the recent photo of baseball player Sammy Sosa (from the Dominican Republic) and his wife, Sonya at a Latin Grammy award event last week.

As you can tell his skin looks completely different in the comparison shot with his wife that was taken a few years ago (pictured below).

Many agree that he bleached his skin, some even say that he is suffering from Vitiligo, but a friend of his recently spoke with The Chicago Tribune and said this:

“He’s not trying to be Michael Jackson. He is going through a rejuvenation process for his skin. Women have it all of the time. He was surprised he came out looking so white. I thought it was a body double. Part of (the photo appearance) is just the lighting. He is in the middle of doing a cleansing process to his skin. The picture is deceiving.”

He said, ‘If you saw me in person, you would be surprised. When you see me in person, it is not going to seem like the picture.’

“People who saw him in person did not react the same way. He can’t believe it is such a big deal.” [SOURCE]

even though he’s not black (african, africanamerican, jamaican, etc), he is still of a dark shade…and most hispanics are mean towards darker hispanics..i guess he wanted to be more accepted of his own kind.

  2. NikNak

there’s somebody out there who think this is vitiligo? Why? Not even he used that excuse.

  3. DCGirl17

OMG Sammy!!!. In all seriousness I hope self esteem and his wife didn’t have a part in his decision to do that.

  4. DCGirl17

I wander why he did that, I just hope self esteem and his wife didn’t have a part in his decision to do that.

I wonder what his mother thinks of him? What a disappointment but not surprised. Self hate all the way. Brothas get money and a white woman and they want to forget.

———”Everyone originated from a black woman”? Is that right lmao? I don’t think so.

@17 and 19 please dont be as ignorant as Sami. I am a light skin Dominican woman and the majority of my family is dark skin. They love it and so do I. Sometimes i use to wish i was the same color but i embraced what god gave me. As far as I know Dominicans in this counrty are their own people but we def. relate with African Americans more so i dont know why you would say that we hate being called black. But like i said there is always going to be the ignorant Dominican, Black, White, Puerto Rican, Asian, Indian and so on.

  10. Hector Lavoe

he bleached his skin because he is an old fashined dominican with the belief that black is not relevant because in Dominican republic they look down on Haitians the black west indians to the left side of the island, im Half dominican, n Half haitian born and raised on both sides and honestly, the dominican side of the island are the most ignorant when it comes to color and and refuse to beleive in the possibility that they have ancestry or haitian ancestry at that tha dark dominicans clearly would have haitian ancestry but the are slow in time. i would know i grew up on both sides of the island and speak all the languages on that Island:Spanish,French,Creole in addition to english. It’s ashame that my fellow dominicans looked down on My fellow Haitians wen at least in Haiti , little do domincans know , they (haitians) speak french, creole, and spanish is growing in haiti, in DR they cant speak creole at all!
The onli reason they cant is because of the mentality of speaking this inferior nigger Language, That, is the history that plagues Dominicans and that is keeping them back. Im not saying there isnt racism everywhere but i’m saying after 200+ years of the islands history Dominicans cannot understand a lick Of Creole, Meanwhile haitians have so much to live and fight for and have something they can use against dominicans when they cross the border and that is the Power of Language and the open mindedness that my dominicans lack! and i say this because when i was growing up in DR their were haitians speaking spanish fluently and dominicans dint know they were haitians because the haitians spoke it well like dominicans speak it, but these were haitians seeking a better life in DR!!!!again I am Half Dominican N Half Haitian, but 100 percent Hispaniolan, a rare mixture given the history.

  11. SPEECHLESS

His friend just contradicted hisself in his statement by saying ‘He was surprised he came out looking so white.’Then he states ‘I Thought he was a body double.’ sad, sad, sad its so obvious his friend is lying and making obvious excuses for him. It hurts me when i see beautiful people of african decent do this to ourselves, we don’t know how beautiful we are i mean look at our skin and our bodies. The way our men and women walk and talk, the way we dance, the way we smile. Why do you think the so called superior race tries thier best to let us know they are better than us,but then they spend the most on plastic surgery to get our lips, our high cheek bones and our high and round bottoms. Not to forgett the fake tanning business is a multi-billion dollar business that says it all, i bet you if there was a product which made white people black it would be out of stock in 1 second. OPEN YOUR BEAUTIFUL EYES BLACK PEOPLE!

Oh and today while i was on the train going and coming to university i caught white women staring at me with wishfull eyes, trust me i know the difference, they were staring like damn black is beautiful! LOL they will never tell you that but they know what the deal is, trust.LOL do yall notice when black people bleach our skin we look stupid? lol it’s like god is telling us ‘I MADE YOU LIKE THIS FOR A REASON FOOLS!!

GOD TALKING TO BLACK PEOPLE= ‘I MADE YOU AS A MIRROR IMAGE OF ME TO HATE YOURSELVES IS TO HATE ME.

  12. 2005 not 2003 liars

@julissa, I have bleaching cream at my hose, when I pop my pimple, I wait a few days, it becomes dark, dab a little on the blemish. back to normal, two weeks later, another pimple same process. Mj had acne and he let everyone know that. They found a tiny tub of cream, not bucket loads. and the autopsy report said that he had VITILIGO.

Amen to the straight hair comment, We all get perms, I could care less, MJ gave over 300 mill to charity, and I got some, he could turn his face green for all I care.

sammy do what you do. Just dont come robbing me and we all cool.

  13. 2005 not 2003 liars

ALSO MJ LIPS LOST PIGMENT WHICH IS WHY HE STARTED WEARING LIPSTICK, SAMMYS DID NOT THEY ARE STILL BROWN.

    RE: In reply to
Don’t lump us all together now! This is one Black Dominican who is proud to be a Black woman and proud of my African Ancestry as is the rest of my family!

As far as I’m concerned Sammy “Estupido” Sosa is just another idiot who continues to make Dominican people look ignorant and behind on the times!

I wish people can take a trip to DR and see how times are changing. I see so many Dominican Men and Women embracing their African heritage whether its changing their class on their passports from Indio/India to Moreno/Morena or stopping the relaxing process on their hair to grow Afros or Dreadlocks.

There are still a lot of people who are still brainwashed of course…but it’s the start of something BIG!!!!

I am very happy to hear that you embrace your african hertiage, but I spent almost the whole summer in Santo Domingo and La Romana and the individuals I came across were not proud of being black. It is like a caste system in the DR. The most impoverished people are the black or haitian people, where as the indio claro or more spaniard looking individuals have better jobs and resources. If there are dominicans who r going natural and embracing their hertiage pls tell me where, cuz I did not see it.

  16. bebe

Too bad we cant see all his body. It’d be funny.

  17. asunkee

♫ “Dem a bleach / Dem a bleach out dem skin /. Dem a bleach / Fi look like a browning” ♫ – Nardo Ranks

LOL. Jamaicans know that the deal. Vitiligo my backside!

  18. asunkee

    @ SHENELLE

Your comment makes you sound really ignorant. The guy is/was black for the same reasons African Americans and other Afro-Caribbeans are. I don’t care what language he speaks.

  19. shoppingdiva

He’s gonna regret that procedure later on when he start to wrinkle up like a raisin. He don’t even know how good he had it!! Shame! When he turns 70s he’ll look like he’s 90. Fool!

  20. Nay

    He look like Eddie Monster.

  21. Shenelle

@ #138..he’s hispanic…of course he has african ancestry down the line due to his brown skin but thats like a light skinned person saying he is white because he/she ancestors were raped…black people (africans, african americans, jamaicans) are black because of their real attachment to africa…right now if sammy sosa was to run for president..he would be considered the first hispanic president

  22. asunkee

    @ SHENELLE

Hispanic is an ethnicity consisting of Spanish-speaking people who are from countries that were once colonized by Spain. Hispanic is not a race. I never said he wasn’t Hispanic. I’m just explaining why it doesn’t make much sense to say he’s not black. It’s not uncommon to be both. Btw, even though all African Americans are black, the same can’t be said for Africans and Jamaicans. Saying that Jamaicans and Africans are black is like saying Americans are white.

  23. Shenelle

wow…african americans wouldn’t be black if it wasnt for africa lmao..every black person came from africa…yes there are white people who live in africa..but africa gave birth to the black generation…and hispanic is a race…whenever you’re filling out a form..it says black/african american…hispanic…pacific islander..if hispanic was black then it would all be in the same category!

  24. MissC

when did dark skin become unattractive?I think its beautiful….society is really f*ckin with us too much.

  25. Ronan

    Ughhh, Sammy….
    Well, who’s that Hot Woman?
    Nice ones!

  26. asunkee

    @ SHENELLE
smfh. I NEVER SAID HISPANICS WERE BLACK! Hispanics are made up of every race and many sub-ethnicities. There are black and white Hispanics. The are West Indian and Central American Hispanics. Our friend Sammy here is a Black Hispanic who is also West Indian; meaning, a black man from a Spanish-speaking country in the Caribbean. Why is that so difficult to comprehend?

When you fill out forms of any sort, you are asked to indicate your race or ethnicity. That means both are on the list. There are only three races Negroid(black), Caucasoid(white) and Mongoloid(asian). The are rest obviously ethnicities. You really should make sure you know wtf you’re talking about before you say make political comments like your first one.

Final statement: You said that he has African ancestry. It’s African ancestry that make black people… black. IF I CAN TELL YOU HAVE AFRICAN ANCESTRY JUST BY LOOKING AT YOU, THAT MEANS YOU’RE BLACK. Done.

  27. Shenelle

oh and by the way..on a form..hispanic is on there as well therefore it is a race dummy…..oh and another good question..if sammy was to run for president…would he or would he not be considered the first hispanic president? therefore it is a race..just like a black man (obama) or a white man (george bush) –presidents

  28. dem a bleach

all the female celebs are doing this………look at rihanna, amerie, halle berry, ciara, monica, even beyonce. they never ever use to be this light skinned. rihanna color almost looks unatural the way she bleached her skin. and on top of it they get nose jobs (amerie, halle, beyonce) look at their pics back in the day!! huge difference. but whatever makes you happy. not everyone can accept themselves.

  29. Spelmanite08

I sincerely think he acted on what most men of color think. They get these high non-Black, yellow girls and redbones and put them on this pedestal for some reason. The real question is how do you think he could not hate his own color from looking at his preference for a girlfriend? Besides the Dominicans, Jamaicans and Indians are all bleaching their skin now a days. ¡Qué triste!

  30. ZULU

First things first, Latin Americans are racist as hell. Fact. Anyone who has been to any Latin American country with BLACK people, or lived in New York or Miami knows this.

Second, it is hilarious to me that an oppressed people will seek refuge in the United States through a channel literally financed by the blood, sweat and tears of black people, and start acting brand new.

Exhibit 1: Shenelle, aka Class A moron.

Read a fvcking book. I can hear the echoes from your empty “hispanic” skull.

  31. Lauren

@Asunkee and Zulu, Shenelle, like so many other dumb people seem to be unaware that the slave ships made stops in most of Latin America. What do you mean “african ancestry down the line”? Look at him! Well at least how he used to look.

Brief history lesson Shenelle, listen up…Africans were brought to the U.S. ,the Carribean, Central and South America. Their colonizers were English, French, Portuguese, and Spanish. The majority of hispanics are multi-racial, some European and Amerindian, some European and African, some all three. Hispanic IS NOT a race. Like Asunkee said, there are 3 races and they are mostly synonymous with the continents that they originated from: caucasoid/European, negroid/African, and mongoloid/Asian. North and South America and the Carribean were everntually inhabited by people of one of those three races (ie, Amerindians are mongoloids who migrated from Asia by crossing the Bering Strait).

This also explains why someone can be white and South African. White is race, South African is a nationality. The African segment is much more prevalent in the Carribean by my guess, because they are small islands and the Amerindians died off much quicker. I guess that being mixed is such a big deal in the Carribean because there’s not enough white people to be a powerful minority by themselves, so the next best thing to run the country and get the perks is somebody “kinda white”. Here, we don’t really make that distinction on a national scale (although we certainly do in our own community) because white people are the majority. It was much more profitable in slavery to call somebody with one drop of black blood black so they could get more free labor.

So please, don’t be dumb enough to say that Sammy’s not black. He’s a black (race) hispanic (ethnicity) Dominican (nationality). The U.S. was estblished by immigrants, so we just attach our ancestrial country/continents to our nationality to denote ethnicity (ie. African Americans, Chinese Americans, Italian Americans). We’re really the only group that uses the whole continent because most of us can’t trace our ancestry back to a specific country.

  32. Alexis

Yes, its obvious he bleached. OK, so now what ?
Hes not hurting anyone. People are asking why, he bleached ? Get real
We already know that dark-skin is considered unattractive and most people in the world hate darker skinned people. It does affect these people. He’s doing what countless other dark skin people are doing right now. Don’t act like you all dont know.

My own cousin went from Naomi Campbell to Mariah Carey over the course of one year. But you know what….she’s more happy & confident than she was before and I have no problem with that. At the end of the day its HIS skin and HE can do what HE wants. Stop trying to dictate what other people do.

  33. asunkee

    LAUREN, thank you!

  34. that girl

he is a dang lie! he looks so wierd that I can barely stand to look at the picture…

  35. LA LA Jimenez

He from Dom Rep…where so many have been taught to disassociate themselves from their African origins… hence “I’m not black – I’m Dominican…”

    A damn shame.

  36. Trish

If he’s not bleaching his skin on purpose, what’s with the fingerwaves??!!!! IDK!!!!

  37. Trish

r his eyes going thru a rejuvenation process 2?? i didn’t know contacts had that effect…. LMAO.. how sad.

  38. Kelly

he looks HORRIBLE. He looked better as a black man.

  39. N.O.Finest504

What the Fuck was he thinking!!! (and yes, I spelled it out) when I first saw this, I was like, “No Sammy! I used to think he was so doggone cute and fioooonnnnne!”

I don’t know what to think about what he did to himself or how he did it, I just want to know why- and I am so sick of that lame ass excuse, “Oh, I hate my skin color blah blah freakin’ blah!” Get the F outta here with all that…… In Sammy’s case, as in MJ case, because of their skin color, their accomplishments became so much more important to the world…think of that …btw, did he and his wife, get a two-for-one deal (look the lopsided boobs LOL!)

  40. What is this??

LOL everyone is paying so much attention to Sammi that they failed to notice his wifes boobs are totally off balance! LOL i know they wont be perfect but im just saying!
