TV BIT: RIHANNA SAYS “EFF LOVE” ON GMA, 20/20 INTERVIEW AIRS ON FRIDAY
Thursday, November 5, 2009
In a 5 minute clip on Thursday morning, pop star Rihanna broke her silence about the night her ex-boyfriend Chris Brown attacked her (alternative video here). The singer spoke candidly with reporter Diane Sawyer and said she was “embarrassed and ashamed” that’s why she didn’t speak out until now.
On being embarrased and ashamed:
“That’s embarrassing that that’s the type of person that I fell in love with. So far in love. So unconditional that I went back. It’s humiliating to say this happened. To accept that? It’s a traumatizing experience.”On going back to Brown after the incident:
“I stayed. I even went back after he beat me, which was wrong,” she said. “But again … I’m a human being and people put me on a very unrealistic pedestal. And all these expectations, I’m not perfect. It’s completely normal to go back. It’s not right. I learned the hard way, but again, this is what I want people to know,” she said. “When I realized that my selfish decision for love could result in some young girl getting killed, I could not be easy with that part. I couldn’t be held responsible for going back.
On her influence on young girls:
“Even if Chris never hit me again, who is to say that their boyfriend won’t? Who’s to say that they won’t kill these girls?” she said. “These are young girls and I just didn’t realize how much of an impact I had on these girls’ lives until that happened.”On being lonely & losing privacy:
“One of the most lonely times I’ve been was in the past few months because nobody understands what it’s like,” she said. “There are a lot of women who’ve experienced what I did, but not in the public. So it made it really difficult. I just felt like, ‘Oh my God, here it goes, my little bit of privacy.’”
The full interview will air on 20/20 on Friday night (November 6th).

I don’t get it. Why are people attacking Rihanna? She was very open and honest during this interview. She didn’t sugar coat anything just to make herself look good. She admitted her mistakes and took responsibilty for it. I know the Chris Brown stans are just mad because the only reason you watched was because you were just praying Rihanna would say she hit him first. Well she didn’t. She said I didn’t do this. I didn’t cause this. That was for all of you non-believers that want to place the blame everywhere except where it belongs..On the person that committed the felony act.

Yea & so what if she is doing this to boost her album.. I see nothing wrong with taking a bad situation and making it into a GOOD one for yourself! Hell she deserves it! If Chris can go publicly about this shit to promote him WELL MOS DEFFINTLY RIHANNA CAN! It doesn’t mean it’s insincere at all!

Wow, I really feel for this young girl, to see your picture plastered all over the news, all bruised and battered up like that must have really hurt!
It’s hard enough just being in the public eye all the time, people judge every little thing you do or say! It’s no wonder why celebs are on drugs or alcoholics!
I commend her for fessing up and trying to do the right thing! like I said before your damed if you do, and your damed if you don’t, it’s just a two edged sword in that entertainment world!
Good Luck Ri Ri!

Wow the haters are in full force - There was no way for rih rih to promote her CD w/o talking about this. The timing? So what! Did you haters talk the same chit when Whitney did it? Speaking out on something as personal as domestic violence is a hard thing to do. Everyone reacts and rebounds differently. The fact that she realized that it was an unhealthy relationship & left is what’s important. Despite some people’s hatred for her she has a lot of young fans & some might be in the same situation she was in. They needed to hear it’s ok to make a mistake, but its even better to take the time & understand what you need to do about it.

Everyone moved past this ages ago and now she does a complete personality change (makeup & clothes) and is having multiple interviews weeks before her album comes out????? While I think the interview sounds a lot better than I expected and I appreciate her sharing her experiences, the fact that she chose to do this as promotion for her album cannot be denied. And she’s clearly being successful because here goes everyone on here talking about “wow I’m so proud of her” “go Riri” WTF! I’m sorry but I’m not buying it. WHAT RIHANNA DID TODAY IS TOO BAD AND I’M VERY ANGRY TO SEE THAT SHE’S TRYING TO KILL THIS 20 YEARS OLD MAN WHEN HE’S ON HIS KNEES TRYING TO DO EVERYTHING FOR HER TO FORGIVE HIM.I PRAY GOD AND ANYONE WHO DOES SHOULD FORGIVE. TELL ME WHAT IS A PERSON WHO TRIES TO RUIN HER EX’ S CAREER BECAUSE HER ALBUM IS A FIASCO, WHAT IS A PERSON WHO WALKS ALL THE STREETS NAKED AND PRETENDS TO BE A VOICE FOR YOUNG GIRLS, HEARTLESSLY USING THE YOUNG PEOPLE TO SELL ONE OF THE DARKEST AND MOST EVIL ALBUM OF ALL TIME.HAS SHE FIGURED OUT ALL THE SACRIFICES CB AND THE PEOPLE THAT WORKS FOR HIM MADE TO BRING OUT AN ALBUM.DOES SHE KNOW THAT IF THERE IS NO CB, A LOT OF FAMILIES WOULD LOOSE THEIR JOB ? OF COURSE SHE KNOWS. DOES SHE CARE ? NOP. AGAIN IS GOOD TO SAY WHAT YOU’VE BEEN TROUGH, BUT HERE RIHANNA TRIES TO DEMOLISH THIS YOUNG MAN, TALKIN ABOUT CB AS “THIS TYPE OF PERSON”. TOO SATANIC, JUST LIKE JAY. THIS R ALBUM MUST GO TO HELL AND DANCE WITH THE DEMONS.

@Neon please not every domestic victim is tied to the man just for children or financial security. Some just love the man plain and simple, and that was the situation in rihannas case. She is young, so this may be her first domestic situation, so she would not fit neatly into your little theory. You don’t have to respect her, because its her life not yours. She may not have left right away, but she still left. It takes courage to love someone, but to push or force that love aside and decide to leave, because you know its the right thing to do. Its easy to be on the outside looking in, but until you experience it youself, the script does not always play out the way you’ve written it above.

For the last time: She didn’t need to do this for album sales. She already has a huge fan base. EVERY celeb goes on a media blitz to promote whatever they have new coming out. Actors, authors, singers…ALL of them do it.
It just so happens that she has NEVER spoken about this so SHE HAD TO SPEAK BECAUSE THEY WOULD ASK HER ABOUT IT!…Duh!
They will not let her come talk about Rated R without mentioning THE OBVIOUS TOPIC ON EVERYONE’S MIND.
If she didn’t talk about it these haters would be saying she must HAVE SOMETHING TO HIDE and she is IRRESPONSIBLE FOR NOT SPEAKING OUT. She can never win because haters won’t give her a chance no matter what she does!
Rihanna your fans are proud of you! Yes you are strong! We support you! The haters WILL NEVER GIVE YOU CREDIT FOR ANYTHING POSITIVE YOU DO. They will ALWAYS BLAME YOU for what Chris Brown did. He ruined his own career. Not you. I KNOW PEOPLE ARE TRYING TO MAKE YOU FEEL BAD FOR EXPOSING HIM. You have NOTHING TO FEEL GUILTY ABOUT. He brought this all on himself! Rihanna Should Discuss Her Own Violence As Well As Chris Brown’s, Affirms National Coalition of MenNational Coalition For Men calls on Rihanna to woman up about her own violence
For Immediate Release
LOS ANGELES/EWORLDWIRE/Nov. 5, 2009 — Pop singer Rihanna recently made a widely publicized statement to Glamour Magazine that she wants to “shed light on the reality of domestic violence.” The National Coalition For Men (NCFM) calls on Rihanna to discuss her own reported violence against Brown as well if she wants to shed light on the problem honestly.
According to court records and other sources, Rihanna struck Brown in the face “numerous times” before Brown assaulted her (’http://news.ninemsn.com.au/entertainment/768865/rihanna-hit-chris-brow…’). NCFM purports although that would not justify his more severe assault, her violence should not be ignored, and if she does not “woman up” to it then her message will be the usual one-sided double standards that leave female perpetration covered up.
The saying, “There is no excuse for domestic violence,” applies to both sexes. Female violence in relationships is not rare but is often hypocritically deemed acceptable or humorous, such as in the film, Sideways. It is part of the cycle of domestic violence, which cannot be stopped without addressing the problem honestly. Children are damaged just by witnessing domestic violence, regardless of its severity.
A 32-nation study by the University of New Hampshire found women are as violent and as controlling as men in relationships worldwide (’http://www.unh.edu/news/cj_nr/2006/may/em_060519male.cfm?type=n’,
‘http://pubpages.unh.edu/~mas2/ID41E2.pdf’).
A major study funded by the Centers for Disease Control found one-fourth of heterosexual relationships had violence and: “half (49.7%) of those were reciprocally violent. In nonreciprocally violent relationships, women were the perpetrators in more than 70% of the cases.” (’http://www.ajph.org/cgi/content/abstract/97/5/941′)
The same study also found “while injury was more likely when violence was perpetrated by men, in relationships with reciprocal violence it was the men who were injured more often (25% of the time) than were women (20% of the time).” (’http://pn.psychiatryonline.org/cgi/content/full/42/15/31-a’)
Over 200 studies now confirm the same thing, that “women are as physically aggressive, or more aggressive, than men in their relationships with their spouses or male partners,” as California State University Professor Martin Fiebert shows in his online bibliography at ‘http://www.csulb.edu/~mfiebert/assault.htm’. This data is more reliable than criminal justice data because men are less likely to report the violence or to respond positively to crime surveys because society still does not consider female violence as much of a crime.
If Rihanna sincerely wants to raise awareness about domestic violence, NCFM calls on her to be forthcoming about her own violence and to address the problem honestly.

KEEP SHAKING YOUR HEAD BECAUSE AN ABUSER IS AN ABUSER TO ME. IN FACT WHEN ROBIN GIVENS WAS INTERVIEWED SHE SAID MIKE DIDN’T HIT HER BUT HE SHOVED HER. SOME WOULD SAY THAT IS LESS BRUTAL THAN BEING PUT IN A HEADLOCK, BITTEN, HAVING YOUR HEAD SMASHED AGAINST A WINDOW, AND BEING ALMOST PUSHED OUT OF A MOVING CAR. I SAY ABUSE IS ABUSE. SO I DON’T GET YOUR LOGIC EITHER. IT IS WHAT IT IS.

CHRIS the woman beater BROWN
You are DONE.
This was in the NY DAILY NEWS TODAY!
Looks like Chris Brown’s past might haunt him “Forever.”
The scorned singer is attempting a comeback with his “Fan Appreciation” tour, which kicks off next week, but he hasn’t had much luck filling even the small venues he’s set to perform in.
The gigs - which start at the House of Blues in Houston on Nov. 14 and end in the Big Apple’s Nokia Theater on Dec. 15 - aren’t even close to sold out. In fact, anyone who’s interested can still purchase up to 50 tickets at a time for Brown’s opening night.
“This is definitely not the outcome [Chris' label] Jive Records hoped for,” says an industry exec, adding that the poor ticket sales are surely a result of Brown’s now-infamous altercation with Rihanna in February. “Chris lost a lot of fans after he assaulted Rihanna. And after that whole scandal, he’s not exactly kid-friendly. What parent would buy their children tickets to his concert?
Selling tickets and CD’s may be increasingly more difficult for the controversial crooner, now that Rihanna is finally speaking up about what actually happened between the two on that fateful February night. Among other interviews, the songbird is doing a segment on today’s “Good Morning America,” which will continue tomorrow on “20/20.”
While the “Good Girl Gone Bad” isn’t bashing her ex - she refers to him as her first “big love” before labeling the situation as “unfortunate” - she may not have to.
“Chris made his own bed,” says our source. “And now he has to lie in it.”

I’ve been where Rihanna was, and until you’ve been in a similar position, you have no idea what it’s like to be caught up in an abusive relationship. It takes time to reclaim yourself and recover from being with a controlling type of man. They try to break your body and your spirit. You do feel angry with yourself for making poor choices, especially if you go back to the man, and it IS embarrassing once you get away long enough to clear the cobwebs of the abusive relationship out of your head. It’s easy for some of you to say this is just some kind of publicity stunt and that she’s insincere. Have you been in an abusive relationship? If not, please don’t judge. Please consider instead that Rihanna may not have wanted to talk about this incident at all, but knew she had to so she could go on with her career. Better for her to get it out of the way now, so she doesn’t have to be asked about it in every interview later.
I applaud her courage. It’s been 19 years since I was involved in that relationship and I’m still embarrassed that I was that stupid. I wasn’t raised around abuse and I knew better, but I went back, more than once, until I finally had the strength to cut the man out of my life completely. He didn’t give up without a huge fight, and police had to be called more than once.
Ultimately I consider myself lucky that he didn’t kill me. Not every woman is so lucky. Regardless of whether anyone thinks this is a publicity stunt, Rihanna is doing a good thing by appealing to young women to get out of these violent and abusive relationships before it’s too late.

@LOLLO1 ur an absolute dickhead, put your feelings for chris brown aside as you are obviously a fan and be reasonable. He beat the SHIT out of this girl and what do you want her to do, keep her mouth shut and hang about in the shadows so he doesnt lose his job, dont fuck up your girlfriend and then you can expect to have job security, otherwise, you may have a problem, thats for him to deal with not her.
If you were a true christrian you would not be condeming people to hell, its not your job, stop being blasphamous with every single word you type, your just appearing ignorant to your own religion.
In terms of people saying this is album promotion, I honestly believe that this girl would never talk about this on camera if she didnt have to, but her album is coming out now, she has to promote it now, so she speaks now. It would be non-sensical for her to try and avoid talking about, she has to talk about it, you the public DEMAND she talk about it so shut the fuck up and let her speak,
I really dont understand how a woman can go through domestic violence, try to regain control over her life and career and you vilify her for it just because chris brown sang your favourite song,
How would you really feel if chris brown knocked seven shades of shit out of your mum? or your friend? would you be so forgiving, no. Let him deal with the negative consequences of his actions this time, she dealt them already as we all saw when the photos of her beaten face were leaked.

I thought she was very courageous for doing this. She is also very well spoken which is a plus. There is nothing worse than watching an interview and wanting to cringe every time the person opens their mouth. I think the lesson here is that you live and you learn. Sometimes you fall in love with the wrong person. Young women need to pay attention to the advice that Michelle Obama gave about finding the right guy. I can tell that most of the young women on this blog will also have to learn life lessons the hard way because you mostly only focus on the superficial things like how “fine” a man is. Unfortunately with that mentality there will be many more Rihanna’s of the world that will go through something very similar.

I remember when i first heard I couldn’t listen to any Chris Brown songs for months after.
It’s good that she left him - whether it was to send out a message that his treatment of her was unacceptable and for others to do the same thing, or not.

I’m not a cb or rhi fan I’m a reality fan. And this is reality. Rihanna did not go back just cuz of luv in my opinion. She went back cuz she also was the abuser. I wrote on her site earler that when I seen her in orlando at the aiport she was in line and noone knew who she was. My emplyees asked to pull cb out the regular and help him through quicker. I approved it and he was nice funny cool and fanbased. Rih was rude cocky and disrespectful. She was not fan based at all. When asked to take pics she refused and he agreed cuz he wanted to flaunt their relationship. She got pissed and shoved her dog in his hands and made him stop and keep walking. She was even rude to the officers. So kill dis poor rih and I wanna be a role model mess. Her actions showed me that day that she is a fighter and she like control. What cb did was wrong but instead of burying him she should admit to her physical part also. And this inteterview is definitely for her album. Please believe. Cuz like someone said ealier why didn’t she come out sooner instead of parading around the world like all was good. Just remember ms fenty the life and u take from someone else that is getting help is the same type if treatment u will get in the future cuz karma is something else. Let the man live dam. I’M A MAN AND I HAVE HAD WOMEN GET PHYSICAL WITH ME BEFORE TOO. I HAVE DATED SOME CRAZY WOMEN IN THE PAST. YOU KNOW WHAT I DID? I HELD THEM OR PINNED THEM DOWN UNTIL THEY CALMED THE HELL DOWN OR JUST GOT TOO TIRED TO KEEP KICKING AND ACTING A FOOL. I COULD SEE IF CHRIS WAS DATING QUEEN LATIFAH OR SOMETHING I COULD UNDERSTAND HOW THAT MIGHT NOT BE POSSIBLE BUT RIHANNA?????? LITTLE SKINNY A$$ RIHANNA?????? HE COULDN’T HOLD HER DOWN OR GET AWAY? WE KNOW THE NICCA IS IN SHAPE.

I can understand the embarrasment she felt… i’ve never been abused but i was lied to by a person i loved and trusted… i it took me close to a year to tell around me people exactly how he played me for a fool… it was just easier to forget and pretend that i am fine… which is clearly what she tried to do the past 9 months… she wanted to forget… she was in pain…

“Eff love…come out of the situation and look at it in third person…for what it really is. Love is so blind”
Powerful words from RiRi! I’m so proud of this young lady. Alot of young women are struggling…and because they are in love it’s hard to see what their going through. The wrong love can be very blinding and misleading. Look at your situation as a person standing on the outside. Your judgement will be alot better ladies (and men).

MY QUESTION IS….HOW DID THE ARGUMENT START? HOW WAS IT PROVOKED?
MAN, I’M DONE WITH THIS SITUATION…ALL I CAN SAY IS THIS…EVERYONE NEEDS TO KEEP THEIR HANDS TO THEMSELVES…MEN AND WOMEN!!!
BOTH OF THEM ARE GUILTY OF BEING VIOLENT…AND CHRIS CAN’T COUNTERATTACK CAUSE IT WILL MAKE HIM LOOK WORSE! HOT MESS ALL AROUND

Uhh actually NO it’s not a shame. SHE IS STILL SHINING THE LIGHT ON A SERIOUS PROBLEM no matter what the reason is. Who cares if it helps her to sell a few more thousand cd’s? PEOPLE WHO DON’T LIKE HER WON’T BUY HER CD WHETHER SHE DOES AN INTERVIEW OR NOT..Duh! So what if she uses the publicity of a NEGATIVE AND TURNS IT INTO A POSITIVE? What the heck is wrong with that? SHE IS STILL SAVING SOMEONE’S LIFE. There is a woman somewhere in the world that saw this interview today and DECIDED TO GET OUT all because of hearing Rihanna’s words. She deserves to come out on top after all she has been through.

People are getting mad saying she’s throwing him under the bus. Chris did his interview first, he had the opportunity to let it all hang out, but he chose not to say much, now you all mad at rihanna. Maybe he was not trying to protect her as we all thought. Maybe he just didn’t want to really give a detail by detail account of how he went in on ri ri, so it was convinient for him to just say for her privacy I won’t get into details.

She really has a speaking disability.. and this girls want to act?? Just keep being pretty cause that’s all your good for..

While I do believe that she is hurt and that she needs to speak out about the situation…..I also feel like she is just promoting her album. Even though I dont like her one bit I’m glad she is out of the relationship but I still support Chris and I definitely will be picking up Graffiti!!!!!!

Its saddens me to hear the negativity that comes out of some your mouth when it comes to dissing Rihanna and siding with CB…this is REAL life…I don’t give a damn whether it was said today or the day of the album release…it was something that needed to be said…and the sad part of this whole ordeal is that it is young girls that are the leaders of this negative campaign against Rihanna…many of you are insecure and unhappy in your lives and feel the need to bring those negative vibes on to others. You need to go on your knees and pray because something is seriously wrong with you!

This is such a BS interview. She’s playing your fools who actually thinks she innocent of course she’s hit him it was two way abuse. A woman does not get a free pass to abuse just like a man does not get one. White folks and Oprah has lynched this young man without a rope. Give him a chance to redeem himself. She will be back in the news within the next two years with the same mess some other guy because she has a problem.

You know, this is exactly why it should be ILLEGAL for photographers to photograph pictures of celebs, magazines/blogs to publish this pictures, and for mags/blogs to report or gossip about a celeb’s PERSONAL LIFE! This whole story got out of control. I don’t think that it’s right that Rihanna gets all of this praise and glory just because she’s a famous singer. If it had been a normal person, no one would’ve even cared! Plus, why aren’t people so concerned about all of these GUN and DUI charges that many celebs/singers/and rappers are facing? Britney Spears almost dropped her baby and drove with her baby in her lap a few years ago, and I don’t hear people still talking about how she could’ve killed her baby. It seems like you can get away with anything but HITTING a woman, which is ridiculous.
I don’t condone what Chris did, but something still seems fishy. Why isn’t it that no one cares that she THREW A BOTTLE AND FOUGHT HER BROTHERS as a teenager? Why isn’t anyone still talking about that? So you mean to tell me that she never hit Chris or yelled all up in his face? I’m not saying she’s to blame, but no one just goes off like that. Like I said, she may not hit him but provoked him and that’s wrong too. I think it’s horrible that she’s throwing him under the bus when he was careful not to say anything negative about her and he’s trying to get himself together. People are acting like he can never live his life no matter what! I’m no Chris Brown fan, but I do support him. If Chris is reading this, you should’ve or are going to have to give another interview and tell what really happened. Tell about the arguments y’all had and put her dirty business out there as well.
We shouldn’t even be discussing this. This is so embarrassing and they should’ve sued the media! How dare they put these singers’ business out there like that for people to judge??? I wonder why they aren’t suing?

I read a few of the comments but stopped when people started “bashing” her.
I don’t know why I “defend” her most of the time seeing as I barely like her but it get’s annoying when people talk this way about her.
Like saying she needs her a** whooped again is so wrong it’s not even funny. I’m sure if a relative of yours went through this you would not react too kindly if someone said that about them. Have some sense and stop being immature.
I’ve never been abused and I don’t think I know anyone who has been abused but me personally, I can like “disconnect” from people quite easily. Like I know a lot of women stay because they “love him” but me, I could care less about love afterwards. Once a guy lays a hand on me, I’d be gone .. for good.
Didn’t think the interview would be this serious - I wish I could watch GMA but I have an early class tomorrow so I’ma miss it! But there is suppose to be a Chris Brown interview with MTV tomorrow (I think it’s tomorrow) as well .. he’s the one who’s looking for attention.
And people need to stop being stupid .. tryna call her out for coming out now because her album is going to drop. That’s just the way it works - it’s not right but that’s what happens so I could care less. Don’t know why people care so much ..
Now can we all move on?

I guess we should all be concerned about Chris throwing dishes at his mom oh and the incident in Germany or some place overseas. Black people kill me when they want to protect our own sometimes it’s okay to say yeah he did it.

I wish Rihanna had spoken about this earlier, but better late than never. She is going to say on the second part of the interview that Chris beat and put her in a chokehold NINE times!
If Chris wants to salvage his career, and any future relationship potential, he needs to be in therapy and working on himself right now and for the next several years. That is the only way he can avoid being a repeat offender. The next time he does this (and without professional help there WILL be a next time), he will GO TO JAIL. Believe it. It happened to Iron Mike and it can happen to Chris Brown. Chris is young so if he works on himself now he can avoid a lifetime of unhappiness.
For anyone to say Rihanna might have done something to provoke Chris into hitting her, think about HOW MANY TIMES he did this to her. No matter what she did, there’s no excuse for him being that violent with her.
Most of you don’t understand the addiction part of these relationships. Women get addicted to sweet man and are terrified of the sick and violent man. When he turns from Dr. Jeykyll into Mr. Hyde you don’t know who you are dealing with. Then he turns back into Mr. Nice Guy, full of love and remorse, and you are in love again.
It doesn’t matter if you have kids or money. It’s not easy to walk away from the guy who is super charming, sweet and loving a lot of the time even if he does turn into a monster. You don’t want to believe that the monster is real or part of who he really is.
If you haven’t walked down the road yourself, you don’t know the fear and manipulation abusive men use to hold onto their VICTIMS. Yes, Rihanna is the VICTIM and Chris is the CRIMINAL. This was A CRIME. No matter how you want to sugar coat it, domestic violence is a CRIMINAL OFFENSE. PERIOD.
Good for Rihanna for speaking up. Women, old, young and in between, listen up! He will not get any better without professional help, so get out NOW, before you waste more time and have more to regret, and while you are still alive.
Remember Nicole Simpson? She got out and still got killed and OJ got away with murder! The first time a man starts trying to control you or acts jealous over something silly, get out! Then you won’t have to become a statistic later.
Love doesn’t hurt!
