The fact that this interview coincides with her upcoming album notwithstanding, I applaud her for being honest about why she went back and why she was initially ignorant of the impact her decisions have on her audience. I do wonder about how Chris will react to this interview, as it seems as though she’s kind of throwing him to the lions by saying she’s embarrassed about ever having spent time around this dude. Fair? I don’t know.

People, this is a 21 year old young woman who was in love (and probably still loves) a young man who made a very bad decision. This couldn’t have been at all easy to deal with. At first I too was disappointed that she seemed to not give a crap about the influence of her decision, but I’ve never been a battered woman nor have I ever been in love with an abusive person, so I couldn’t understand. None of what she went through could have been at all easy to deal with.

As for her 9 month silence? I think she needed to block it out and focus on what she does best - expressing herself through music and fashion. Drake said that she needed time away from the incident, and he was right. It’s unfair for any of us to have expected her to snap into “poster girl” mode and start speaking out against domestic violence. She needed time to heal.

Glad she realizes she influential… I hope her actions from now on reflect that statment.

Rihanna… I think you need your a** whooped again! You know damn well you’re only doing this now because you have an album out! I’m tired of her naive fans saying that it takes time and she can talk about it when she wants, but her actions don’t add up to why she would talk now. First of all, it’s the media’s fault that these two were embarrassed. No matter how bad the situation is with a celeb, it is nobody’s damn business what happens in their personal life. I find it quite disturbing that Rihana decides to do this interview 9 months after the incident and coincidently the month her CD is dropping. I would have believed her if she did this months ago. I see pics of this girl in the club half naked and in Paris basically naked walking the streets/partying hard and now she’s this sad little innocent girl. Isn’t interesting how most of the harshest and most insensitive feedback seems to be coming from other women? You ALL embarrass me!
If you know ANYTHING about preparing for performance or art for that matter, you’d appreciate her need for catharsis, given ANY difficult situation.
But as a human being, could you deal with airing her relationship so PUBLICLY the way she has? Wouldn’t you want to run miles from it too and not even deal with it?

@Neon please not every domestic victim is tied to the man just for children or financial security. Some just love the man plain and simple, and that was the situation in rihannas case. She is young, so this may be her first domestic situation, so she would not fit neatly into your little theory. You don’t have to respect her, because its her life not yours. According to court records and other sources, Rihanna struck Brown in the face “numerous times” before Brown assaulted her (’http://news.ninemsn.com.au/entertainment/768865/rihanna-hit-chris-brow…’). NCFM purports although that would not justify his more severe assault, her violence should not be ignored, and if she does not “woman up” to it then her message will be the usual one-sided double standards that leave female perpetration covered up.
The saying, “There is no excuse for domestic violence,” applies to both sexes. Female violence in relationships is not rare but is often hypocritically deemed acceptable or humorous, such as in the film, Sideways. It is part of the cycle of domestic violence, which cannot be stopped without addressing the problem honestly. Children are damaged just by witnessing domestic violence, regardless of its severity.
A 32-nation study by the University of New Hampshire found women are as violent and as controlling as men in relationships worldwide (’http://www.unh.edu/news/cj_nr/2006/may/em_060519male.cfm?type=n’,

A major study funded by the Centers for Disease Control found one-fourth of heterosexual relationships had violence and: “half (49.7%) of those were reciprocally violent. Looks like Chris Brown’s past might haunt him “Forever.”

The scorned singer is attempting a comeback with his “Fan Appreciation” tour, which kicks off next week, but he hasn’t had much luck filling even the small venues he’s set to perform in.

The gigs - which start at the House of Blues in Houston on Nov. 14 and end in the Big Apple’s Nokia Theater on Dec. 15 - aren’t even close to sold out. In fact, anyone who’s interested can still purchase up to 50 tickets at a time for Brown’s opening night.

“This is definitely not the outcome [Chris' label] Jive Records hoped for,” says an industry exec, adding that the poor ticket sales are surely a result of Brown’s now-infamous altercation with Rihanna in February. “Chris lost a lot of fans after he assaulted Rihanna. And after that whole scandal, he’s not exactly kid-friendly. What parent would buy their children tickets to his concert?

Selling tickets and CD’s may be increasingly more difficult for the controversial crooner, now that Rihanna is finally speaking up about what actually happened between the two on that fateful February night. Among other interviews, the songbird is doing a segment on today’s “Good Morning America,” which will continue tomorrow on “20/20.”

While the “Good Girl Gone Bad” isn’t bashing her ex - she refers to him as her first “big love” before labeling the situation as “unfortunate” - she may not have to.

I’ve been where Rihanna was, and until you’ve been in a similar position, you have no idea what it’s like to be caught up in an abusive relationship. It takes time to reclaim yourself and recover from being with a controlling type of man. They try to break your body and your spirit. You do feel angry with yourself for making poor choices, especially if you go back to the man, and it IS embarrassing once you get away long enough to clear the cobwebs of the abusive relationship out of your head. It’s easy for some of you to say this is just some kind of publicity stunt and that she’s insincere. Have you been in an abusive relationship? If not, please don’t judge. Please consider instead that Rihanna may not have wanted to talk about this incident at all, but knew she had to so she could go on with her career. Better for her to get it out of the way now, so she doesn’t have to be asked about it in every interview later.

I applaud her courage. It’s been 19 years since I was involved in that relationship and I’m still embarrassed that I was that stupid. I wasn’t raised around abuse and I knew better, but I went back, more than once, until I finally had the strength to cut the man out of my life completely. He didn’t give up without a huge fight, and police had to be called more than once.

Ultimately I consider myself lucky that he didn’t kill me. Not every woman is so lucky. Regardless of whether anyone thinks this is a publicity stunt, Rihanna is doing a good thing by appealing to young women to get out of these violent and abusive relationships before it’s too late.

I have never been a great music fan of Rihanna but I have become a huge fan of Rihanna the person. I am a 25 years old and it is shocking to think that she is only 21. To have to deal with what is a traumatic experience .. and then in the PUBLIC EYE! Good ness.. I would not wish that on my worst enemy.

To hell with the music or public images. She is a strong WOMAN. Not a girl, but a woman to be candid about such a thing, and to not only speak out for herself but to other young men and women in the same position.

There is no SCHEDULE for one someone should speak. It is up to them and their right. Many men and women, including famous ones (Oprah, Halle, Tina, T. Perry, etc) have been abused and it takes a lot to speak about it. It can take years to reveal it or immediately. What is important is that one is true to themselves and turn to God for comfort (this applies to Chris Brown, too).

Also, this post shows why America has such a high level of domestic violence. I studied domestic violence in law school. Societies that have low levels have shown to have swift condemnation of the act and support is given to the abuser (criminal conviction, condemnation and/or therapy) and to the victim. That is the only way to deal with DV. It must be exposed in order to stop it. So those involved can get the help they need psychologically. Otherwise, what is allowed to breed in silence and in the dark continues to grow.

On the Up and Up…Rihanna needs to stop. Domestic abuse should not be tolerated by anyone, male or female. When the issue that brought all this attention first came out, people close to Rihanna were also stating that with Rihanna growing up with her brothers, she was more of a Tom Boy, and she would engage in fights with her brothers, as well as boys. I think that she also had some issues in her that needed to be addressed. By no means I am saying that Chris was or is innocent, but I think they both should have received Counseling. Chris got caught this time, however I would be willing to bet you that she has physically abused him as well in the past. Sad to say, but I think it was just apart of their relationship. Both are young…and most of our young people don’t have any psoitive guidence in their lives..no matter how much money they may have, or status they may have in our society. I think for the most part, Rihanna is now saying the things that she said in this interview due to her endorsements. I don’t like what she is doing at this point. I think that if both of them would have made it known that they both contributed to the Abuse in their relationship, they could have both been spokepersons for Teenagers Against Abuse, and etc. To have young people, male and female talk about this would have been more effective that what she is doing now. She loves Chris, and if it was not for the Media being on her left and right, she would be with him now. (well they may be meeting up secretly). Chris messed up, and I think he actually had a wake up call, and has learned that this is not what a man is to be about.
Again, I am a strong believer of Physical nor Mental Abuse should be tolerated, however they both were contributors to this type of behavior.

Approximately two months ago, Whitney Houston sat with Oprah and threw Bobby Brown under the bus. Now Rihanna is doing the same to Chris Brown. I am not saying that these men are innocent of any wrong doing, but what I am not hearing is “I did wrong too. I accept personal responsibility for my actions as well.”

Rihanna states (whether verbatim or through the magic of editing) that this happened to her and she did not choose this, and that she is speaking out because of the impact she has on young girls. However she fails to mention that she was physically violent as well. What impact will that have on young girls? Are we telling young girls that it is okay to hit and scratch, and that there should be no recourse?

If Ms. Fenty is indeed attempting to be a better role model for young girls, why not teach them to hold themselves accountable as well? More to the point, hold themselves accountable for mental physical and verbal abuse and emasculating and provocative behavior?

If we want equality, we must put these double standards behind us. If you do not tolerate hitting, verbal abuse, and other violent actions, then you can not perpetuate this behavior with your own actions. Those with clean hands who find themselves in a bad situation can utilize the legal system and other processes in place to aid victims of domestic violence.

It is time that each of us stands up and take responsibility for our own thoughts, words, actions, and habits; and more importantly, that we pass this behavior along to future generations.

Sorry I was very disappointed to see Rhianna sit up there and lie. I feel its time to be honest. Both you and Chris were verbally and physically abusive to one another. Glad that you said that! It needed to be said! Whether Rhianna hit Chris on the incident we all know about or on many/any others we don’t know about…I do believe she hit him too! Chris wouldn’t have spoken about him being hit also because not only is that very rare for an abused man to do, but people would hate him more if he said so and believe that he too was trying to play the victim or deflect his bad behavior in an attempt to sully her up so he wouldn’t look so dirty.

I love that she’s speaking out on this, but hate that she appears to throw him under the bus when clearly it takes two to tango.What would be more helpful, if her goal is to truly help domestically violent youth/persons, is to have a joint interview of some sort where Chris can participate too.
