After almost a year of reports that focused mostly on his personal life (rather than his music), Chris Brown is hoping to put the past behind him by way of his new album “Graffiti.” Although the album provides much of what we’ve grown to love and expect from Brown: a fusion of pop/R&B with a hint of hip-hop, you can’t help but wonder if art is merely imitating life.
Tapping big name producers like Polow Da Don and Swizz Beatz, on “Graffiti,” Brown reminds us why he’s so good at what he does. Even still, the lead single “I Can Transform Ya,” is nothing to write home about. The futuristic production and typical lyrics courtesy of Lil Wayne’s feature makes the song intriguing but far from certified banger material. On the contrary, “Sing Like Me,” is smooth a butter as Brown contemplates which woman to choose in a room full of options. Content aside the delivery is where the 20-year-old is luminescent.
Everything runs pretty steadily until the “Rihanna potholes” rear their heads. Despite stating that certain songs are not about the pop singer, at this point it’s very hard to believe. The first of his sob story begins with “Crawl,” where he pleads with his lover to return and they will slowly put the pieces of their embattled relationship back together. Then there’s “So Cold” which is full-fledged self-loathing. Underneath soft piano keys the Virginia native takes us through all the symptoms of a broken heart. “Tell her I miss her. Tell her I need her. Tell her I want her, I really want her to come back home, back to keep me warm. Tell her I’m sorry, I’m really sorry, Can you forgive me? Please forgive me.” Null of personal references this track is an impressive hybrid of sad love song and hopeful reconciliation. Lastly, the Ryan Leslie produced “Famous Girl,” is pretty much an open letter to Riri; and it’s not a sugary sweet letter either, which is kind of cool.
We can undoubtedly hear Brown’s metamorphosis from baby-faced teenager to grown man status on “What I Do,” an upbeat drum intense club joint featuring Plies. For his part, Plies manages to stay within the lines of the beat providing for a match made in “hip-pop” heaven. “Take My Time” featuring Tank serves up some classic R&B melody circa the late 90s Jodeci era, but once Brown hooks up with Trey Songz on “Wait,” he finally gets the ball rolling. Similar to the “Gimme That,” off his debut “Wait” (produced by Polow Da Don) is something like a phenomenon.
Perhaps the most reflective, as opposed to descriptive, song on the album is “Lucky Me” which details the downfalls of fame (i.e. having your domestic altercation become the subject of public banter). For the first time in the entire album, the listener will get a glimpse into Brown’s heart, which is just the kind of support he needs right now.
In its entirety “Graffiti” holds a little something for all of the Billboard charts: pop, R&B, hip-hop and even dance, which to Brown’s credit is a clever approach. No the music is not earth shattering, but its solid as a rock, so whether you love him or hate him Chris Breezy is back and he brought his A-game.

Honeslty to HELL with the critics! To HELL with all of Breezy haters! This album is the ish! I have been blsting this all weekend My favs are ‘Sing Like Me’, ‘What I do’ ‘Wait’ ‘Falling Down’, ‘Movie’ “Brown Skin GIrl’,’ ‘I Need This’, ‘Take My Time’ makes me blush and of course ‘Crawl’! The whole dame album is fope! The critics are so full of ish and stuck up Rihanna’s ass it ridiculous! I haven’t read one unbiased review! It would be nice if they could do their jobs be objective and stop basing the music on the situation and picking apart every song It doesn’t matter what the critics have to say, as long as the fans love it! And we do! Good job Breezy!
rihanna has alot of top 10 potentional, top 5 hits on her cd… chris has good songs also but apart from the singles he already released there nothing in te albumthats gonna peak and hold the alum on the charts.. i bought both albums and support both but in the end i think rihanna will outsell him by far because alot of hit pop stations will be playing “phtographs” “firebomb” “rude boy” unless chris release “pass out”.. he need pop stations man.. urban and r&B only cant et you nowhere.. good case in point trey songz..
c’mon chriss…

UUUMMM YEAAHHHH….WHEN I WAS @ TARGET TODAY GETTING THE CD..DERE’S THIS LADY AROUND HER 30′S GETTING CB ALBUM TOO. SHE WAS PROBLALY GETTING IT FOR HER DAUGHTER BUT WHO KNOWS. & THERE WAS LIKE 2 OTHER WOMEN IN THEIR 20′S WHO WAS LOOKING @ THE ALBUM TOGETHER & READING THE BACK OF IT. i LOVE CB’S ALBUM AND IM 24 YEARS OLD.
I Love the album and its the best… TEAM BREEZY AKA CHRIS
I said Beyonce lyrics r childish & that’s what the fuk I meant. if u call the shit she sing mature than I will suggest yall airhead asses to go to lyrics.com & read over those nursery rhymes yourselves. & if u still don’t agree..fuk yall airhead arses! I could careless! Graffiti is a nice CD & if u don’t like it..i bought 3 extra copies to pick up the slack! GTFOH
Sounds like Chris’ album is waaay better than you know who’s….
as we can see, chris brown is getting sympthy sales instead of rihanna who erry body taught would… so when and i say it loud and clear WHEN RIHANNA, sells more that chris after they finish releasing their potential singles i dont wanna hear no one say she go sympathy sales.. it is fair and square, chris is actually gonna sell more first week because i seen ppl that aint neva buy this nicca album a day buy f cuz they feel srry for him, while ppl didnt buy ri ri’s cuase they said she was tryna get sympathy.. so i say fair and square, he will have higher first weeks, she lowers first week…. but i promise u that Rihanna will beat the breaks outta CB in sales when its all said and done..lol. and most of all know it.. plz keep calling her a flop… i love that she’s gonna prove the haters rong once again.. wait till the “hard” video is released.. lmfao… omg… well let the games begin.. this nicca got major sympath sales…
chris album is and will never be better than Rated R… like lets get serious here.. i will say if it was but the amount of depth and lyrics and production that is in her album will show…i hve never been more confident in an album Rated R in my life that rihanna could have sold 30,000 her first week nd i would of bet anyone money that when its all said and done, she will sell at leatst 1.5.. anyone that calls Rated R grbage and praises this tweeny bopper music is outtta their mind, plain and simple….
Well those of you saying the album is about his relationship with rihanna, isn’t that what alot of song writers do? Most of their music is inspired and written from personal life. But because we’re so used to these RnB artists who pay someone to write a song for them, we seem surprised when we see the opposite. Ofcourse we don’t want to hear about rihanna the entire album. But is it possible that we’re just interpreting his work that way because we know the situation? isn’t 90 per cent of RnB songs about love, sex and failed relationships? who is Neyo singing about when he sings, “part of the list?”Who is Alicia Keys singing about when she sings “try sleeping with a broken heart?” Is Beyonce really trying to tell jay Z he should go “to the left, to the left” in “Irreplaceble?” These are just songs. Some of Chris’ songs may be about rihanna, but surely not the whole album. He’s just singing RnB!
i mean, u put lil wayne on a track and cant go top 10??? r u serious.. nd this is who yall betting on..? lmfao.. rihana put out a freaking ballad as her first single nd it went top 10 in the us and is #2 in the UK and many other countries… then ” Hard” just debuted and jumped to #19 and moved the most spins after jay-z, song… nd debuted #26 in canada after one week with no official release.. lets get real here, u cb stans kill me.. lmfao… just wait nd see… this dude has no other single that will make top 10 on the freaking alum.. lmfao.. he already released them nd they didnt make the cut…
sheeh.. for those talking bout i bought it 4 time and 5 times and ish, yall betta hope it speaks in them numbers…lol.. money is tight and that album just cost too damn much.. lol… but uying it 4 or 5 times.. wats ur real motive… it kills me that some neva bought his music before but are buying it now just because of hate they have for rihanna… that is sooo digusting to me… instead we need to support both of them and chris u need to cut ur cd price half cuz i aint paying no damn 10.99 or 13.99… even white ppl like lady ga ga nd em know betta than that… they ish running 7.99.. but heyyy… *goes to youtube the cd*
For me Graffiti is really better than Exclusive.
I like 16 songs of Graffiti. ( I Can Transform Ya / Sing Like Me /Crawl / So Cold / What I Do / I.Y.A. / Pass Out / Wait /Lucky Me /Gotta Be Ur Man / For Ur Love /I Need This / I Love U / Chase Our Love / Take My Time / Movie)

Sounds like Chris’ album is waaay better than you know who’s….
I agree.
RATED R IS 1,000000 TIMES BETTER THAN THIS WACKNESS! DAMN 2 VIDEOS AND HE STILL CAN’T EVEN GET INTO THE TOP TEN?? LMAO! SORRY CHRIS YOU ARE NO RIHANNA!
USHER AND TREY SONGZ ARE BETTER THAN YOU TOO!
I love every song on the album…this guy has undeniable talent that will take him beyond all this drama! Who cares about the media, stick to the music to tell your story! I give it a “Bougie” Seal of Approval…
Keep it Bougie Baby!
To the idiots saying he can’t score a top 10 hit WAKE UP ITS NOT GOING TO BE A TOP 10 HIT IF STATIONS STILL ARE BOYCOTTING HIS MUSIC!! Songs that suck make the top 10 because they play that crap every 2mins on the radio, MONEY TALKS!! Just because I can Transform Ya didn’t hit top 10 doesn’t mean its not worthy, take the ban off his music and it woulda been #1….
Anyway, I gotta pick the album up and see for myself
the “WAIT” track is fire, of course b/c Trey is on the track. All Chris needs to do is put out video for that track and shut the haters down. Do your thing Chris. I can see the video for this being sick, its a club banger.
I hope that his album is already selling better than RiRi. I can’t stand that phoney bish..no talent. I’m just saying.
@ Precious: CB is only 20 years old, what age group did you expect him to sing about?? Come on people, get a clue.
I think the album is tight! Sing like me hot!
I bought the album 2day and I am so glad to hear ppl are buying it, esp. since most of his promotion has consisted of him premiering songs off his internet/twitter site and occasionally MTV and Wendy Williams. All his pure R&B songs are wonderful my fav..I’ll Go, Movie,Take My Time. I listen to at least 15 songs on the album. Plus if you haven’t heard the song “Graffiti”, which plays at the end of his album trailer ..the song is a beast, a real anthem. Seriously, Chris has a TON of unreleased joints that are just as great as other songs on his 2 other albums.
If anything, I want CB to be successful to show the music establishment that true talent and the fans that support it are more important than anything their marketing teams can ever contrive.
I’m over thirty and I like the cd…. I think it’s a really good cd!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Music from all genres and artist’s can be appreciated. Good job CB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@125: Do you know how stupid you sound? So anyone over 21 who enjoys his music should be ashamed? Are you effing kidding me! Music isn’t based on age, if you like the then you like the music! You should never be embarrassed or ashamed to support real talent! It’s that simple! Clearly people like to support talent and talent knows no age limit. For a 19 year old you are not to bright? Are you in college?
@ Tyra is a liar: Gurl sit down! I don’t even know why I would waste time responding your simple ass! Clearly you are just a dumbass Rih stan who insist on talking out of your ass! FYI your gurl Rih single fell out of the top ten after one week while CB’s single remains steady on the charts? She doesn’t have a top ten single now either and neither does Usher! Tell me this if Trey is so much better than CB then why hasn’t he EVER outsold Chris and has yet to have a top ten hit from any of his albums? Trey isn’t mainstream and CB has ALWAYS been more successul than Trey?
To all the fools saying that he has not had any top ten singles on this album yet,Newsflash: Some radio stations still are not playing his music dummies! ‘Transform Ya’ has been holding steady on the charts and has peaked into the top twenty! He has had very lil promotion and is being boycotted but still managed to make it top twenty. Thats actually really good. It is still No 1 on ittunes top downloaded r&b and so is the video. Plus ‘Transform Ya’ mostly appeals to an urban demographic and is not that strong of a single to begin with.. ‘Crawl’ is more mainstream and just debuted on the charts trust it will reach top ten. I don’t know what CD ya’ll have listened to but Graffiti has several potential hits on it! ‘Wait’ which will probably be a single has top ten written all over it! ‘What I do’ is another potential club banger. ‘Movie’ is a great r&b record. Furthermore if RIh has so many strong singles on her album, why is wasting so much time on the wack ones! Why hasn’t she put all her potential top tens out instead of promoting those wack singles ‘Wait Your Turn’ and ‘Hard’ possibly the worst two on her album!
All the Rih stans need to pull your head outta her ass and accept reality! His album sh!ts all over hers in all honesty. At the end of the day, critics don’t matter cause they were never fans to begin with. His fans have his back all damn day! Graffiti will sell well and perform well on the charts!
For the people so concerned about how he is doing on the charts, for the record its going to take him a little longer to completely bounce back on the charts. By next year he will be there things just don’t happen overnight especially after what he’s been through. Some of you spend too much time and energy focused on his personal life, just taking the shit harder than him and Rihanna DAMN lol. I don’t judge people because I’m not perfect so I keep my mouth shut about his personal life but I do love his music and I adore the fact that he has real talent.
Great review ! Wait LaTate is that you? Omg! Great review libra
I will be buying the album!!!!!!!!!!!!
Recently,I found a very interesting place______p l u s f l i r t. C o m_____. I Can Transform ya has been holding steady on the charts for weeks…it jumped from like 50 somehting to 24, then 23, then 24, then 22, now 20…its moving up slowly but surely…thats pretty good considering some of the biggest pop radio stations won’t play his music.
Rihanna jumped all the way to #9 (for one week) cuz of all the radio play she can get (radio play that Chris can’t get) but then dropped the week after and kept dropping after that…
Hard is up the charts now…hopefully for her it will keep moving up, Hard is better than Russian Roulette anyway
I’LL TRY 2 BUY THIS ALBUM! I LIKE CHRIS!
im sorry dat review wuz not accurate…i have chris brown previous 2 albums and i must say this is way TOO POP…i can do a little pop influences but it aint no R&B on here or hip hop really…i will say it has maybe 4 or 5 decent songs but for an album PASS….
I must say… It took me listening to it a couple of time to feel the album like that. But it only took on day to grow on me. But that is not abnormal for me because B’day is one of my favorite albums and it took 2weeks to grow on me. Over all I love a few of the songs but I thought it was a well thought out well put together album. It was worth my $14 for the deluxe.
Wow we all are entitled to an opinion. Fact: Chris vocally is the business. Out of the young kats his runs and clarity are not to be played with. I have liked his music but never bought his CD. I listened to this and it tells the story and emotions at different times after the incident. I can hear the pain, shame and fight to keep going. He added other elements that people may not be used to. There are touches of electronica thoughout and rock. The title track is one of my favorites. He got a a few hits on here make no misatakes. Its only for the US airways to stop persecuting him and get into the music. Good luck Chris you did your thing.!
YALL CAN SAY WHAT YOU WANT CHRIS BROWN ALBUM IS FIRE… I mean it really gives you a little bit of everything. “Take my time” is the ish…
I haven’t heard the album yet, but Im so excited about it!!! This was a well written review, makes me want to listen to it even more!
WOW! Graffiti is taking over iTunes R&B charts…6 out of 10 song on the US R&B charts are all Chris Brown lol
Plus he gots 4 songs off the album on the main chart, transforma ya, what i do, crawl, and wait
ppl on twitter saying his album is sold out in the stores!!! get em breezy!!!
glad i bought my deluxe copy early…WHO MAD!?!…good!
i think it is a really dope album BUT ITS SUPPOSED TO BE DOPE if you have all of the top writers and producers on a project. Chris dances amazing and has a great delivery and does what he is told so i guess you can count that as an artist “growing”. He will never be completely back 100% but i know that he will try and for that i wish him well. BTW good review!!
Wow – love him or hate him the fact is people are talking about him. And for any publicist they know that’s the gold standard. If the ish hadn’t popped off between him and Rihanna, it would be just another album release, but the hype has been beneficial for both of them. And no, by no means do I think it was a publicity stunt, but hey since it happened…Good luck to him and her, I hope he becomes a better man and that she has become a stronger woman for all this. It’s a shame that their lives are played out on the world stage like this, but they are celebs and that’s the risk that is taken with fame and fortune. I think these kids’ll bounce back and they will both be fine. As far as the album, meh…I can think of a few other things to do with me disposable income, but again much luck to him.
And yes, kudos on writing a thoughtful review !
I am not a Rihanna fan but her CD is crushing CB’s. On the other hand I never in my life purchased a CB album yesterday I bought 2 LOL. I did feel sorry for him. I feel Rihanna was as guilty as him. I did not buy Rihanna’s album but I think it’s better than most albums out right now and I initially thought otherwise. My 2 cents Rihanna cd win hands down, but I was hot at her for a lil minute. “after” next week I might think about buying her album on bootleg, I don’t think this chick is going to get my money for now ,the industry period, so I am not going to single Rihanna out but I did but 2 CB cds but I wish them both back on their feet at the end of the day.
@ Being That
Though you are entitled to your opinion, your viewpoints does not set the standard of how many others should feel. Your age DOES NOT determine which artist you should listen to, unless you are a minor and your parent(s) tell you otherwise. I’m a lover of music and am able to separate the artist from their music. I have always loved and listened to a variety of genres from artists — young and old — regardless of their past and present sins; so, I’m not embarrassed when I listen to their music. Unlike yourself, I don’t allow another person, music reviews and my age to determine whose music and what type of music I should listen to; I draw my OWN conclusions. If you aren’t a fan of his music or feel old because of the artist you’re listening to, then it’s YOU who is embarrassed — not I.
chris has not reached top 10 with i can transform ya or crawl.. i can see the cd falling flat on its ass after the first two weeks being out. truth be told.. but good luck to him… i never bought his cd before, nd wont start now..am 19 years old, i dont see how 23 year old can walk in a store buying a chris brown CD?? like wtf… ur grown, try maxwell… even i feel too old or embarassed to be totting his cd, i aint no damn tweeny bopper.. yall grown as women want grown music go to maxwell or trey songz.. smh at 23 and 27 year olds actually walking in a store to buy a cb cd… embarassing.. but hey, to each it’s own
_____________________________________________________________________
Um….do you realize how truly ignorantand narrowminded you sound! You have the audacity to say ‘Truth be told’! Your opinion is far from the truth! First of all, music is objective! You don’t buy or listen to music based on the age of the person who makes it! I would NEVER be embarassed or ashamed to purchase music from an artist that I enjoy listening to! When I buy music I buy it because I like it and I want to support the artist and their craft. No one should EVER be embarrased to buy music because they are older than the person who makes it!! Plus, if I am 23 yrs old and CB is 20, then wouldn’t I be closer in age to CB then I would Maxwell who is in his 40′s! Think about it dumbass! At 23 I am 3 yrs older than CB, therefore it would be a lot easier for me to relate to CB’s music who I am only a few years older than, then Maxwell who is DECADES older than me! You really are an idiot! I enjoy Maxwell as well, but his 40 year old ass isn’t exactly making music that my barely old enough to drink ass can realate to! Maxwell is more soul/r&b where CB is more contemporary r&b/hip-hop/pop, which at my age is more of what I listen to! At 19, you seem to be really ignorant to assuming that someone at age 23 should be ashamed to listen to music because the person who makes it is younger than them! SMH at your ignorance.
Trey Songz is 25, who is around the same as me and not much older than CB either. We are all in the same age bracket. Trey even did a song with CB “Wait’ which is sure to be a hit! So do you feel that Trey is a ‘tweeny bopper’ as well!
Futhermore, it doesn’t matter if an artist has a song in the top ten on Billboard or not, that doesn’t reflect how an album will sell. He has a song in the top twenty with very lil promotion and some stations still aren’t playing his music! ‘Transform Ya’ has been holding steady on the charts for 8 weeks now, and is still No .1 on itunes R&b, and top 20 Itunes top 100. “Crawl’ is No 2 on itunes and ‘Forever’ is still No. 8 after being out for 2 yrs. Whether or not a song makes it to top ten on Billboard does not reflect how it will sell. Susan Boyle does not have ANY songs on Billboard at all and she sold over 700,000 records first week! Need I say more? Plus Rihanna didn’t have any songs in the top ten when her album was released either, RR peaked at No. 9 and fell out the top ten the next week. She still released an album and it didn’t flop So what makes you think that CB will?
I take it you haven’t listened to the entire CD (the Deluxe version expecially) cause there are plenty of potential hits on the album that are not for the ‘tweeny boppers’ as you so ignorantly call them. ‘Take My Time’, ‘Movie’ aren’t exactly kid friendly! They are two of his best r&b ballads he has made. “Sing Like Me” may be catchy and appeal to younger audience, but the lyrics are suggestive. ‘Wait’ and ‘What I do’ both have hot beats, but the lyrics are much older and suggestive than his previous albums and will appeal to people my age and even older. Plus there are songs such as ‘Crawl’ and ‘I Need This’ & ‘Fallin Down’ that are clearly a sign of his growth vocally and lyrically adults can relate to the lyrics as well. He has pop/techno sounds with songs like ‘IYA’ & ‘Pass Out’ that are sure to do well overseas! ‘Brown Skin Girl’ has a great carribean flavor and will probably do well if released. This is truly a well rounded album that will appeal to many of all ages! Hopefully since the rest of the world isn’t is as igorant and narrowminded as you they will listen to the music pbjectively and not go by the opinions of others!
@Ana / @15, I have never read your comments before today, but you said what I couldn’t say. I love everything you said and it is all true.
THIS COWARD IS SO TIRED.. I DONT SUPPORT MEN WHO HITS GIRLS.. HIM WEARING THOSE MANDEX ON THE CD COVER IS ENOUGH REASON FOR ANYBODY NOT TO GET IT.. AND OH YEA HE’S FLOPPING.. ONLY PROJECTED TO DO 90,000.. FAIL
all i can say is i love chris and he is officially back, thank god! I have loved him since his first single dropped always compared him to michael jackson & still do!! i have not been able to get this new cd outta my head. keep it moving chris you are my favorite artist not to mention you are smokin hot and those dance moves drive my crazy
give the kid a break bebe beat the shit out of his x wife and the judge is not gone to do nothing because he had someone to talk to the judge so get off chris because he is talented and hit # 1 on BET and it time for BET to invite him on some of their show and you’ll saying that his concert is a failure that’s lies because every one he has did so far has sooold ooooout you hear we know who putting out negtavie words out on chris but we are going to show ya’ll that this is not jim crow days and we are a village and we are going to support chris as for rhinna let hear that she is going to shelster to talk about abuse no she talking about abackard tatoo on her collar bone so when she look at it will remind her noting she needs to work her program like chris tommy beat pamela charlie beat denise bebe beat his wife and tiger wife beat him and everbody is stilll making MOVIE, MUSIC PLAYING GOLF so let chris do what he do best sing, dance, write music, act,
To all the people giddy over the fact that the album is getting bad reviews, ask yourselves this, when is the last time that you bought an album based on a review from a critc? Seriously? It may help you to somewhat get a feel for what to expect, but when it really comes down to it, reviews are just opinions from other people, not facts, just opinions. I have read most of the reviews from such well respected publications such as Rolling Stone, NY Times and the Chicago Tribune, and I must say they are all biased. They all compared his album to Rih’s album and constantly brought up the ‘incident’. One reviewer had the audacity to start of the review with the sentence “Two weeks ago Rihanna released a ‘brilliant’ album..’, it was obvious where he was going to go from there! He mentioned Rihanna’s name in every paragraph of the review. It was very cynical, full of snide remarks and utterly ridiculous! Rolling Stone magazine basically reviewed Rated R and gave a brief mention of ‘Graffiti’ when it was supposed to be his review to begin with! Another review only mentioned one song ‘Famous Girl’ and accused him of making excuses for the assault and didn’t bother to mention any of the other 12 songs on the album! All of these reviews were unable to separate the music from the ‘incident’ making them impossible to look pass his personal life and pay attention to the music. It was as if they expected him to apology for the assault on the whole album and rated it based on whether he sounded remorseful or not! They weren’t reviewing the music they were critisizing him as a person.
I am 25 years old an I thoroughly enjoyed the album. There is something on there for everyone! It really is a variety of sounds and concepts that I think he mastered quite well. For Chris Brown fans and people in general who want to get a good grasp of the material of ‘Graffiti’ (particulary the deluxe version which I recommend),I suggest checking it out for yourself. He has beautiful ballads on there such as ‘Crawl’ and ‘I Need This’, club bangers such as ‘What I Do’ and ‘Wait’, r&b slow jams such as ‘Take My Time’ and ‘Movie’. Techno/pop records such as ‘I.Y.A’ & ‘Pass Out’, and just plain ole’ cute catchy songs like ‘Sing Like Me’ and ‘I love You’. It is truly a well rounded album from a very talented artist. It is more mature and shows vocal maturity and won’t just appeal to ‘teeny boppers’. Take a chance on the album and you see for yourselves. Don’t let critcs make the decision for you.
