RE: Gabourey Sidibe: SIGH, In all honesty, as I happy for her, but i would prefer a “real actress” win this time around. At this point, Im wondering is Black Hollywood more excited and praising the fact of a “black nomination” rather it being an “outstanding performance” (well deserving so to speak? Seriously, whereas Gabby did a “good job” I wouldnt neccessarily GIVE her an Oscar for it. And nothing wrong with giving the award to new comers but …..give honor to where honor is due! It was unfair for all the actress that have spent most of their days in films, for this very moment if Hollywood did as they done 2 years ago with Jennifer Hudson. She necessarily WIN for “acting” but rather for ‘singing the hell outta of song” …be real. I could ONLY imagine the mindset of those actress who sat in the audience with blank thoughts and wth’s on the face/hearts. Now, Monique is going to win for BESt supporting actress …because she has a history of actin.
The movie was good I have to admit… but I dont think it was award worthy. Thats just my opinion
That wassup, thats alright foreal…

@ #2: I think you’re referring to Latifah Muhammad.
Cuba nominated again …man get yo arse out of those straight to dvd movies the checks cant be that good lol
Congrats to all the nominees but was hoping to see Michael Jae White nominated for Black Dynamite though .
Congrats!
@ Alice
I agree with you on Jennifer Hudsons awards. I didnt think she did anything amazing in the movie.
I do think Gabbie did an amazing job though. Hopefully she will continue to get movile roles after Precious
congrats to the precious girl she seems like a sweetheart
movie is beyond good
Congrats to all of them. Precious was brilliant…I have yet to see Invictus, but want to soon.
@ 18
See, I think Jennifer Hudson did deserve the award. It wasn’t just the singing the hell outta the song, it was the powerful emotion that she brought with it. I mean when she was “singing the hell outta that song”, you could feel the hurt, the anger, the betrayal, you felt all the emotions that her character was feeling when she was betrayed by both her lover and her bandmates. Damn, I got chills just remembering her performance.
But back to the topic….I haveen’t seen “Precious”, but I have heard good things as well. I just think that the conditions and the struggles that that girl faced in the movie earned the nomination, and not necessarily her performance.
I hope these nods will be good indicators of the Oscars.
I absolutely loved the movie “Precious”…I can say that this movie was ‘breathtaking’…I knew that Monique would get the nod, her character in that movie was so ‘deep’…I also liked Gabby’s performance in this film; actually, she didn’t do bad for her first gig…kudos to her…as for the J Hud comment, the reason why she won that Oscar was because her character had ‘depth’ and she portrayed it well…now if you’re still ‘bitter’ about your ‘idol’ Beyonce not winning an Oscar, then you may need to go and ‘seek help’ because that girl will not win any Oscars because she has no depth and she CAN’T connect with the characters that she’s assigned to portray…she’s only getting movie roles because of her ‘popularity’ and it brings $$$ straight up…the only way she would win and Oscar is by ‘daddy’ paying them off or getting it because of her popularity…she can sing and dance, but not everyone can act it has to be instilled in them…sorry that truth has to be told, how many movies were she in? and no Oscar? hmmm….
Congratulations to ALL!
I really hope MO’NIQUE wins, I love her sooo much, and she did a GREAT job! Congrats to the entire cast, Gabby and Mo’Nique are very deserving of this honor! I just hope Mo’Nique shaves her legs when she walks the red carpet…who else agrees????
@21#:
I agree @ you could feel the hurt, the anger, the betrayal, you felt all the emotions that her character was feeling when she was betrayed by both her lover and her bandmates. Indeed, you could feel all of the above….BUT was that really worth an Oscar of “Best Actress in a Leading Drama” no. Jennifer’s a “singer” not an “actor”. Perhaps, Hollywood felt as you did, and she JOB WELL DONE…..but realistically, if we were basing “her singing” ability with her “acting” they probably wouldn’t even come head to head.
@24:
First, why the hell would you randomly include Beyonce?! And bring up “idol assumptions” ? No SPOKE of her or even cares. This post was kept on Oscar WINNERS strictly. NOT SINGERS which furthermore brings up back to Jennifer Hudson , who didn’t WIN based upon her “acting ability,” BUT because she sung that song to the fulliest! Nothing more or less! It’s just a obvious fact. Think about it, if THAT scene (in which she won in) had been eliminated, would she have STILL been deserving of an Oscar? Probably not. I recall during the year of that ceremony, as they announced the nominates, showing a clip of each actress performance….THAT was the scene that they showed. Again, They did NOT show a part of her “acting” but only SINGING. Just like Halle Berry didn’t “WIN” her Oscar based upon acting but because she basically made a porn video so to speak. Bad part about that IS she really can act. Hollywood is backwards……!!
Congratulations to these lovely ladies. Both women looking stunning in the picture above.
I didn’t see the movie because it didn’t look/sound all that interesting. I’m not being negative but I just wish they could’ve gotten somebody else to play the lead role and I doubt she will get an oscar nomination.
Anyhow congrats on the nominations!
#26 Jhud won because the category was weak. And if you only knew how many White women won Oscars and had nude/sex scenes. Kate Winslet showed waaay more than Halle Berry did and she won in 2009.
#28Gabby and MoNIque are both locks for Oscar Nods haven’t you been following the precursers.
I will say Gabby deserved it soley for the fact that she acts NOTHING like ‘Precious’ in real life! She’s a freakin’ OREO in real life and talks like a white, yet a hoodrat in the movie
*white girl
@ ALICE
Isn’t ‘Dreamgirls’ a musical/drama? Of course J Hud won for that particular scene because it was perhaps the most pivotal of the entire film. She was definitely deserving of her Oscar because she played that damn character well, hell without her the movie would’ve been dry. However, I agree the ‘Precious’ girl did very well but is her performance Oscar worthy? I say no.
Congrats to the big gurls they betta work.
@ A&E Girl
How you gone judge the girl without seeing the performance?
Oh and J. Hud actually did have to act out the performance of the song. I mean you all should know that wasn’t an actual live performance. So whether she song the hell out of it or not she won because of her performance. Had they just played the track on a blank screen she wouldn’t have won. Thing is thats not what she did she gave a visually striking performance of the song she recorded. Which required her to act it out and give us emotion and feeling which it did undeniably IMO. I suppose her winning is debatable however I don’t feel she unjustly won. Then again I did not see the other nominees performances.
THET BOTH HAVE ARMS THE SIZE OF THIGHS…DISGUSTING
#34: hush…please.
someone has to be negative, don’t they…
anywho…congratulations to all of them. well deserved!
Congrats to them all. I hope they win big.
@ #25 Man you is stupied for that mess!LMHO I feel you on that. Man she always looking hairy in photos even on the red carpet events! I be like what in the world Moniqe seriously? LOL But thats my girl! ONE TIME FOR THE BIG GIRLS!!!1
“Precious” was extremely overrated. I was waiting for a deep profound moment in the movie that never came. To be quite honest I don’t see what was so award worthy. I’ve seen many people play roles way deeper.
I loved the Ben Carson movie. Even though TNT showed it for like 48 hours straight lol. That movie was the bomb.
“Precious” was overrated. It was a decent “hood” flick lol. Thats about it. Anyone could predict the nominations for this movie for the simple fact that the white man propagandized the target audience before the movie was even out concerning how “excellent” the film and performances allegedly were. The point is to further the “victimized black female” agenda and the l*sbian movement. The only “functional” characters in the entire film were Paula Patton and her “partner”, and it was purposeful, as Lee Daniels (the director) is a h*mosexual. He made it a point to associate the alleged “homophobia” that Precious was taught, with her mother, who was “dysfunctional” and borderline sadistic for the entire film. On a deeper level, the movie had multiple MK-ULTRA themes, including child and baby physical and sexual molestation, mirror programming, multiple personality disorder, and even the use of butterfly imagery in the promotional poster for the movie. It was interesting that the main character’s delusions, and what she deemed as a “better life” (being caucasian with a light-skinned boyfriend) are not considered “controversial”.
The movie was deep! While Gabby Sidibe performance was decent, I don’t think I agree with it being Oscar/Golden Globe/SAG worthy. But she definitely has potential. Mo’Nique on the other hand … did an AMAZING job. You could tell she had to dig deep. Especially for the final scene with Gabby and Mariah Carey where she’s explaining the abuse. Whew …
Living Large! There are other Blacks living large across the diaspora, find them at the Nayland House Blog.
Good luck to them both. The deserve all the recognition they get.
38&39 Stop hatin! dat was a great movie why dont black people support one another instead of being ignorant and mean. gabby acted her heart out in that role she do deserve an award
@43 Lmao. Im so tired of people on here attempting to pull the race card for any given topic. I am in no way at liberty to support every movie, music video, etc, put out because someone “black” created it or played a role in it . Give me a break .Nothing was special about this movie to me . I read “push” years ago it was a great read .I expected so much more from the movie that wasn’t delivered. I think people are happy to see a big black woman get a role they considered decent more than anything else dealing with this movie . I would have been ashamed to even audition for that role it would have been an insult to me . If you liked the movie fine ,I didn’t and at the end of the day I wont .So deal with it and move on .
no comment! but good luck
I just thought the movie was OVERALLY sick and salacious. For that reason, I saw it for free. There was nothing redemptive @ all about the ending (which was the same as the book). There was hardly any growth by the characters (I don’t consider reading @ an 8th grade level when you’re 16 growth).
I’m tired to death of Blacks having to play these tragically dysfunctional characters in order to get attention from the “Academy”. There were SO many more deserving roles before that didn’t even get nominations. It’s obvious that Hollywood only wants to reward backwards stereotypes instead of pure talent.
movie was ment to promote incest.
