Troubled ex-NBA player Jayson Williams suffered a minor fracture in his neck early Tuesday morning when he veered off an exit ramp hitting a tree and was charged with drunken driving.
The former New Jersey Net is awaiting a retrial on a manslaughter case in New Jersey and told officers someone else had been driving, but no one else was in the car. Taken to Bellevue Hospital, Williams refused a breath test but police asked for a warrant to test his blood samples and charged him with drunken driving at his hospital bed in the prison ward.
Williams made headlines last April when he was hospitalized for a suicide attempt.
GILBERT ARENAS SPEAKS
Washington Wizards guard Gilbert Arenas spoke to the press following a NY Post report that he and teammate Javaris Crittenton drew guns on each other in the locker room on December 21 during a dispute over a gambling debt. “It was bad judgment, having the weapons here,” Arenas said. “It was bad judgment, and I’ll deal with that.”
Arenas said he stored unloaded firearms in his locker to keep them away from his newborn child and felt it was better than throwing them in the trash.
Arenas met with law enforcement on Monday, and issued a statement saying:
“I am very sorry for the effect that my serious lapse in judgment has had on my team, my teammates, the National Basketball Association and its fans. I want to apologize to everybody for letting them down with my conduct, and I promise to do better in the future.”
Arenas is likely to be suspended and could face assault and carrying a pistol without a license charges.
MIKE TYSON WON’T BE PROSECUTED
Mike Tyson is off to a good start for 2010. Los Angeles prosecutors will not be filing charges against Tyson after he allegedly punched photographer Tony Echevarria at LAX last month.
Tyson, who was traveling with his wife and 10-month-old daughter, said the aggressive paparazzo attacked him.
“After a full and thorough review, we’ve decided not to file charges against either party due to insufficient evidence,” L.A. City Attorney spokesman Frank Mateljan said late last week.
