American televangelist Pat Robertson opened Wednesday’s The 700 Club that the Haiti earthquake happened because the Haitians made a pact with the Devil in order to gain freedom from the French:
“Something happened a long time ago in Haiti, and people might not want to talk about it. They were under the heel of the French. You know, Napoleon III, or whatever. And they got together and swore a pact to the Devil. They said, we will serve you if you’ll get us free from the French. True story. And so, the Devil said, okay it’s a deal.”

On Wednesday, President Barack Obama pledged the U.S. government would lead “a swift, coordinated and aggressive effort to save lives” in Haiti. The President dispatched troops to speed up the relief efforts, which are desperately needed after Tuesday’s earthquake, the worst to hit the island in over 200 years.
Prime Minister Jean-Max Bellerive estimated that “hundreds of thousands” of people may have died in the quake, and new reports suggest up to 500,000 are dead. The International Red Cross fears up to 3 million people may have been affected by the earthquake, and electricity has been cut off and communication is extremely difficult. The UN is reporting that bridges have been knocked out and hospitals have been badly damaged or destroyed; estimated losses are running in the billions.

I’m not Haitian, but I’m engaged to a Haitian man, and my fiance’s sister told me this 2-3 years ago. She said that Haiti really wanted to win the war against the French and end captivity for good. Voodoo was done which included an animal sacrifce, and according to her, Haiti has been paying for this ever since. This is why they can never get ahead. There are people there who still practice Voodoo, and the people who have converted to Christianity are still afraid and superstitious of it. My fiancee tells me things that have me looking at him like he has to be crazy to believe this things, but he believes them, and he goes to church nearly every Sunday, as does his family. The point is, people have been saying this for a long time, and it’s not just white people like Pat Robinson.
