American televangelist Pat Robertson opened Wednesday’s The 700 Club that the Haiti earthquake happened because the Haitians made a pact with the Devil in order to gain freedom from the French:
“Something happened a long time ago in Haiti, and people might not want to talk about it. They were under the heel of the French. You know, Napoleon III, or whatever. And they got together and swore a pact to the Devil. They said, we will serve you if you’ll get us free from the French. True story. And so, the Devil said, okay it’s a deal.”

On Wednesday, President Barack Obama pledged the U.S. government would lead “a swift, coordinated and aggressive effort to save lives” in Haiti. The President dispatched troops to speed up the relief efforts, which are desperately needed after Tuesday’s earthquake, the worst to hit the island in over 200 years.
Prime Minister Jean-Max Bellerive estimated that “hundreds of thousands” of people may have died in the quake, and new reports suggest up to 500,000 are dead. The International Red Cross fears up to 3 million people may have been affected by the earthquake, and electricity has been cut off and communication is extremely difficult. The UN is reporting that bridges have been knocked out and hospitals have been badly damaged or destroyed; estimated losses are running in the billions.

I heard this story a few years ago; dont know if its true though.

I think people are free to believe whatever they may, but to try to attribute an earthquake to pacts with the devil, people trying to fight for their freedom 200 years ago or voodoo is more than a far stretch.
What happened to using science as an explanation for a natural disaster? I could of sworn that earthquakes were caused by the the Earth’s crust moving and shifting. If an earthquake occurred somewhere in the US, would that be caused by curses, voodoo or damnation?
How about the fact that Haiti is a country that is very poor, has a capital city (Port-au-Prince) comprised of poorly constructed buildings……and a corrupted government, which, for the most part, has done nothing legitimate to trully uplift the country from abject poverty. Why couldn’t any of those factors lead to this event? Why does the uncertainty of life have to be tied to curses and devil worship?
FEAR is a life saving human instinct, but divides and conquers those who use it to mold how they make decisions.
Reading some of these comments would lead me to believe that some of the people responding to Pat’s utterly misguided and biased video are no different from Puritans participating in a witch hunt, Nazi sympathizers looking for a reason to kill Jews, or KKK members search for Blacks to hang….These groups were driven by fear and used religion to justify murder or explain calamity.

With that being said, I think if you worship or idol things(other than GOD) then evil very well may come unto you.
