BLACK HISTORY MONTH THROWBACK PHOTOS: MALCOLM X & MUHAMMAD ALI

February 1st, 2010

Check out this throwback photo of public speaker/human rights activist Malcolm X taking a photograph of legendary boxer Muhammad Ali right after he beat Sonny Liston in Feb. of 1964; gaining the ‘heavyweight championship of the world’ title. Ali was surrounded by fans in a small diner in Miami, Florida.

Less than a year later, Malcolm X would be gunned down while giving a speech in New York City. Great photos.

All this month during Black History Month, Concrete Loop will be posting Throwback photos of legendary Icons in Black History. Make sure to check the site for the latest.

DOPE. I was reading up on Malcolm X the other day and he was an avid photographer in his day. His family needs to release a book of his personal photos, that would be hott.

Malcolm X was the main person who gave Ali the confidence that he would beat Liston through constant positive reinforcement.

    Malcolm X

Long live Brother Malcolm. Malcolm is someone whom I admire beyond words. He`s my “HERO” in every sense of the word. He spoke harsh, undeniable, truths which still apply today. Malcolm was a deep brother who once said that, “he could spend his entire life just reading”. His intellect definitely beared witness of his eagerness to study and observe. I`m reading one of my books on him now and I`m just captivated by spirit, courage and intellect. He was brilliant at giving such sharp analogies. He also didn`t have a problem calling people out regardless of if they were a brother or not.

Just watching vids of him on Youtube gives me chills and goosebumps. I mean Malcolm had “BALLS”. Whenever he was a guest on a show he would look the white man directly in the eye and make his point without even flitching, take about balls, man. Malcolm was a “REAL” brother who didn`t sell us out because he was both true to himself and our plight, as a people, in the country. He talked about how the white press and the power structure would build up certain blacks, responsible blacks, and make the spokesperson for our community.

He said the ones the power scructure couldn`t control were labled as extremists, radicals, troublemakers. People such as himself, Fred Hampton, Huey Newton, Bobby Seals, etc. were labled by the press as the extremists, LOL…We need Malcolm, today, to point the hypocrisy that this nation still exhibits as well as calling out Obama. I can hear Malcolm now being strong and dishing out some stinging blows to Obama and the power structure. Malcolm is the only black leader in this country to try to internationalize our plight in this by taking it to the United Nations. He said it was a question of Human Rights and not Civil Rights.

This is when The Government, i.e., The State Department, The Justice Department, CIA and FBI really started to move on him. Malcolm was “BRILLIANT” and the powers that be saw that and therefore their diabolical plan was set in motion. Brother Malcolm still lives and he won`t be forgotten. Some of the things he predicted have come to pass. Such as the conflict between The East, dark nations, and The White West. Malcolm was a true REVOLUTIONARY and VISIONARY who holds a deep space in my heart. My love for Brother Malcolm exceeds the depth of the world`s largest ocean. Speaking from a male perspective, Malcolm exemplified the true meaning of “MANHOOD”.

    Peace….Long live Brother Malcolm…

@22…… i couldn’t concur with you more! Malcom X is someone that is a real inspiration to me and in my life! Me and my friend go back and forth between Malcom and Martin. Both were undeniably great men and the sacrifices they made can’t be described with just a single word, i just prefered the way Malcom’s views more! Very Brave both of them but Malcom is saying Why should we have to ask for what is rightfully ours. Malcom X indeed spoke his mind and didn’t hold back, didn’t try to sugarcoat nothing and thas why i love this brothas views and what he stood for. “BY ANY MEANS NECESSARY” one of my fav quotes

    @ 23

But towards the end of Malcom’s life wasn’t he trying to tack back his stance on whites being the devil, and about separate communities etc.? I mean…smh… I don’t know. But your description of Malcom does make me wish there were more men like him. Ones that aren’t afraid to pick up a book and learn something

    @CIRCA-1984

He did not have a choice. He moved towards “Pan-Africanism” and he no longer had the regimented, “militant” foundation of the Nation of Islam backing him up. He had to use prudence and attempt to establish white support. As strange as it may sound, he used to receive thousands of letter from whites per day, while he was in the nation, praising him for his intelligence and asking him if their race was really going ot have to pay for what they’ve done. They respected him because he had a ruling class mentality, which is the only thing that the white race respects. At the end of the day, his message was flawed because it was too utopian, and it has filtered down today to black people today that believe in “Africanism” but would never live there.

    @ Judah

Thanks. It just annoys me that Malcom is always celebrated for “putting whitey in his place” but they don’t acknowledge how he backtracked on all these stances and started to preach about loving some whites and opening our communities etc., just pisses me off.

The way that I understood it (I’ll have to go back and re-read some more on Bro. Malcolm) the things Malcolm was saying about “whitey”,understand it was said for our morale! To uplift the black man back in those times. And with those talks, you have to remember, all things said was always going to SHOW us(the black man) as equal or better than the white man(not only was he trying to uplift us but he did truly believe what The Nation Of Islam taught him about “whitey”/”blue-eyed Devils”) and some things said about white people was not true(at least not about ALL white people.) So be careful trying to put your views or todays standards on things that was done in the past! When Bro.Malcolm took his pilgrimage to Mecca and actually prayed and ate, slept, etc.with people that in America would be considered “white people”,he realized that it wasn’t the COLOR of people that made them evil.It was their intent. But remember,The Nation(in America) didn’t agree w/ Malcolm’s views! And I can go on and on but the things he said about white people, that he HAD to say because he was going to defend us NO MATTER WHAT(and if that meant hurting white peoples feelings) then so be it!! That was the price he paid to defend the black man! That DOESN”T take away from the many truths that he pointed out about the white man’s racists and corrupt systems of the time!! (and still goes on today-just covered up a little better.) So I’d be careful summing up The Life of Malcolm by pointing out that he “backtracked on some stances and started to preach about loving some whites etc.” b/c in all fairness he was just a Man and he did make mistakes but he was OUR Black Shining Prince and I for one will always love Brother Malcolm mistakes and ALL!! And if “Whitey’s ” feelings gotta be HURT so I can defend Bro.Malcolm………then,SO BE IT!!! RIP Malcolm X.
