NEWS: MO’NIQUE WINS BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS OSCAR + WRITER GEOFFREY FLETCHER MAKES HISTORY WITH HIS WIN

As many predicted actress/comedienne Mo’Nique took home to Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her powerful performance in the movie, “Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire.” Read some of her speech below and click the link provided for video.

First, I would like to thank the Academy for showing that it can be about the performance and not the politics. I want to thank Mrs. Hattie McDaniel for enduring all that she had to so that I would not have to. Tyler Perry and Oprah Winfrey because you touched it, the whole world saw it. Ricky Anderson our attorney of Anderson and Smith thank you for your hard work. My entire BET family. My Precious family thank you so much. To my amazing husband Sidney, Thank you for showing me that sometimes you have to forego doing what’s popular to do what’s right. And baby, you were so right! [ VIDEO ]

Geoffrey Fletcher MAKES HISTORY

Also taking home an award Sunday night was writer Geoffrey Fletcher. He became the first African American to win a writing award and got the gold statue for the adapted screenplay for “Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire.” View his gracious acceptance speech here.

Good for monique hope to see win more in the future
but she looks like shes gaining all her weight back

  2. AMBER STAN!

    CONGRATS TO THEM BOTH!

  3. PoohCandy

Congrates to Monique’ and Geoffrey! I’m so proud of them! They both kept it classy and real. He looked handsome and Monique’ looked stunning! It was great to see her pay hommage to Hattie McDanial by wearing a blue gown and the same kind of flower Ms. McDaniel wore in her hair on the night she won her Oscar in 1940. It was truly a beautiful night.

  4. Lem

COONGRATULATIONS TO BOTH MONIQUE AND GEOFFREY AND FOR THANKING THOSE WHO CAME BEFORE THEM-WE ARE SO PROUD OF YOU BOTH FOR KEEPING IT CLASSY AND KEEPING IT REAL.GOD BLESS

  5. Real Talk - The Real One

Congratulations to Monique, I am so happy for her . Her excellent performance in Precious was worthy of an Oscar. And congrats to Geoffrey for winning as well , for his very clever screenplay.

  6. FallBackHaters

I’m happy the Academy Awards awarded the likes of Mo’nique and Geoffrey an Oscar, they truly deserved it for their work they put in and like Mo’nique said last night they showed it CAN be about the performance rather than politics…I hope the Oscars keep it up.

  7. LULU

Great job to them both, especially Mo’Nique for starting it off about the performance vs. politics thing. I dont’ recall her speaking about the fact that she was virtually invisible during the promotion of this film up until awards season until that speech, but that really stood out speaking on it on that platform.

  8. circa-1984

—-I didn’t watch the Oscars, but I heard the Academy Award committee choose the
—-scene from Precious, where Gabby steals a bucket of chicken? Lmao & smh!!!
—-Lawd have mercy! I want to be hapy for Mo but out of all the black actors that
—-work hard on perfecting their craft, how in the hell does Monique win an Oscar
—-for portraying the most ghetto, stereotypical role imaginable?!! In what twisted
—-world does this shyt happen? Lol & smh!

  9. Classy!

I’m so happy for Mo’Nique, and I love her whole “this is cool, but whatever” attitude

toward all of the award hype. lol. They build these ceremonies up and expect it to be

the best event of someone’s life. Mo’Nique has made it clear throughout the award

season that she already knew who she was before the nominations and that these

accolades, while flattering don’t make her or complete her existence. She’s a real

woman-that’s all I have to say.

  10. JstBReal

I love the fact that Mo has stayed true to herself all throughout this award season and I hope the much success she deserves. I’d never think Nicki Parker would be an Oscar winner lol.

  11. younghustla

100% agree with #8. Precious is a back handed compliment. These white folks love seeing black people down and never coming up.

Gabby running around with a stolen bucket of chicken…SMH.

Precious + The Blindside = FAIL aka Sam Jackson face

  12. divainva

    _____@ 8 Exactly! It’s beyond embarassing.

  13. HaitianQueen

IDK wat 8and 12 are complaining about. I thought the award show was beautiful. I love all thoses who won awards especially Monique and her crew. I love Sandra Bullock in the Blind Side. She was amazing. I bet if no african americans had one last night all yall haters would be complaining saying shit like the Oscars dont like black people and black people will never get recognized blah blah blah. Dont like it dont watch it .

  14. Tasha32

I was extremely happy when she won as well; job well done. She walked up to that stage with such elegance and grace and her speech was very moving. Not to mention, she looked flawless, loved the makeup and the fresh flower in her hair and that blue against her skin was a good look.

Side note: Did anyone else see the face Samuel Jackson made after her acceptance speech? It puzzled me a bit as to WHY he’d be doing the little side eye thing but then again who knows what was going through his head. Maybe I’m just reading into it a little much but I’m sure once he sees that clip rolled back, he’ll be explaining why he made that face and probably wish he hadn’t. I was also wondering why they had to put the clip on where Precious stole the bucket of chicken and ran out the store down the street?! Was THAT really the only clip they thought should have been chosen? That was a bit embarrassing. I was hoping Gabby would have won but she’s young and will get more acting gigs I’m sure. The only other person I didn’t mind Gabby loosing to is Sandra Bullock because Sandra also played that part to pieces so my first choice was Gabby of course but when Sandra won, I didn’t feel bitter because she also did an excellent job and her speech was moving/touching as well.

Lastly, congrats to Geoffrey Fletcher for being the first African American writer to win an Oscar. Would have been quite a night if the Black Director would have also won, that would have also made history!

  15. all good

I’m so proud of Geoffery Fletcher’s acceptance speech–so warm and thoughtful. What a contrast to Mo’nique’s self-centered, and graceless words. Now that award season is over, I hope and pray she gets over herself as well.

  16. Allen_j

@13 I get what they’re saying its the roles we win for versus the roles other people win for.. IE Denzell “Training Day”

But I also heard that mo was being a Diva about the whole situation didn’t let barbra come to her house etc etc but it is what it is

  17. nanaflying56

Who cares!!! My boyfriend thinks the same with me. He- is eight years older than me, lol. We met online at- A_ge_m_in_g_le @ c/o/m a nice and free place for Younger- Women and Older Men, or Older Women and Younger Men, to- interact with each other. Maybe you wanna check out or- tell your friends.

  18. SanDYBox

congrats to both. i am also happy that monique does her own thing and does not play into what people feel she is suppose to be. she has, and refuses, to turn high sadity.

  19. imnotthatstoopid

    @11 YoungHustla:

So you’re telling me of ALL the clips they could’ve played from the movie “Precious”, they chose a clip of her stealing a bucket of chicken? Lovely…I’m glad I missed that whole display.

The Academy Awards are a joke. It’s a parade of degenerates and wanna-be degenerates…pathetic.

  20. JUDAH STALKER

    WHERE’S JUDAH? I MISS MY BOO :(

  21. HaitianQueen

@14 you are not alone I saw what Samuel L. Jackson did 2. Im not gonna say anything till they annoy his ass about it and he comes forward as 2 why he made that face. I thought it was rude and disrespectful.

  22. divainva

    @16 exactly !

@ 13 If you would read instead of trying to be a smart ass. We both said we didn’t watch it . I READ blogs so of course I see the info. Reference #16 for explanation since your brrain function is down this am .

  23. MIMI

CONGRATS TO THEM BOTH, AT #16, IM SO TIRED OF THAT WHOLE TRAINING DAY VS. HIS OTHER MOVIES COMPARISON AND SO IS DENZEL WHO RESPONDED TO IT WHEN HE WAS BEING INTERVIEWED BY TAVIS SMILEY. WHAT ABOUT MARLON BRANDO AND ROB DENIRO WHO WON OSCARS FOR PLAYING MOBSTERS, I MEAN IT CAN GO BOTH WAYS. TO WIN AN OSCAR, IT’S ABOUT THE PERFORMANCE

  24. lala

I am happy that she won.

  25. Tasha

    Congrats!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  26. Deann Dmere

    Congrats to them both!
And how wonderful and refreshing it is to see a Writer win an Oscar!!!!..:)) Such such motivation for me! Seeing how the “Writer’s” are underated much too much in Hollywood, when they are actually the most imperative! So Kudo’s to you Mr. Geoffrey! You have made my Monday morning!

    :) )

  27. Shellboogie

Congrats to both, they were very much well deserved.

  28. pz

@ 14, yes, i saw samuel l’s shady behind!!!! i’m soo mad at him right now!! ugh!

  29. Mrs. PT

Everybody looks so nice. Congrats to the winners :-)

  30. watch and pray

  31. DamnClown

….#21 You better stay away from Judah I am the number one stan! Don’t make me get some peper spray on you……seriously I like Judah I asked if we could get married hehe …….and yeah where is he…….

  32. haha uwish

JUDAH IS A MARRIED MAN LADIES…..FALL BACK

  33. Dude-N-Htown

………Im happy, for Mo. I thought she did a good job. I do see a recurring trend of
………African Americans winning awards for stereotypical roles. Roles where
……..African Americans aren’t portrayed in the best light.

  34. divainva

Judah have a fan club in here . lol You Chicks would crumble trying to tango with Judah .Trust me. *winks*

  35. Moni

I’m going to throw this out there because I see that there are some comments made regarding what other commentaries/reviewers/”interviewers” are saying….

I’m glad Mo’Nique won, I might not be crazy about the role (I read Push years ago, refused to see the movie, I’m over movies that show us in the worst circumstances), but I acknowledge that she took the role and gave it what she had to give it and won the awards she did.

This whole statement that she’s been acting as a diva, well, let’s look at it this way… Mo’Nique has done other movie roles before, either in comedies (Two Can Play At That Game) or Dramas (Baby Boy)…do you not think that she may have auditioned for other movie roles and because she was heavy and a black woman she did not hear negative things directed towards her? You hear black actresses talk about what is said to them on casting calls…it has been mentioned countless times. She’s been at this for a long time, so I’m SURE she has heard some negative pieces of “constructive criticism”

So now when she plays a character that most of us may know, have seen, whatever and we KNOW it’s the worst character ever, she gets these awards, everyone just loves her, she’s an artist! Bull****! And she KNOWS THIS.

So, she gets the role, but she doesn’t go to all the parties, she said on her show, she has a show she has to tape 6 shows a week, she has 3 kids, and she’s a wife…she’s handling her business. I also don’t think that she’s lost on the fact that just because you get an Oscar, you get more defining roles or that everything magically appears at your feet. Just ask Cuba, and Halle or Whoopi for that matter. Denzel and Morgan are the only two black men that I know that even get invited back to the Oscars as actors.

And as far as Mo’Nique getting funky with Barbara Walters…do we not remember when Mo subbed in when they fired Star Jones and Ms. Walters in asking how her children were asked: “How are the little creatures?” Now you want to interview her because she is in a movie that has swept awards? I would let her come in, but I would be cool too.

Mo is not about the bull*****. I don’t blame her.

    Congrats Mo!

  36. Jrock37

    Congrats to both! Well deserved!

A good role is a good role. I’d rather African Americans win high acheivements for ACTING rather than be the characters they play. GROW UP PEOPLE! Nobody dissects the roles for which white actors and actresses win. Think about it. All of the white people that have won Oscars were not playing model upscale aristocrats. My people kill me sometimes.

  37. younghustla

I don’t have a problem with negative movies like Precious being made. It is the lack of diversity when it comes to awards time.

Antwone Fisher was an uplifting movie co-starring and directed by Denzel with performances that rival Monique’s role in Precious from both Denzel & Derek Luke. It didn’t even get an Oscar or Golden Globe nomination.

The mammie role is alive and well in 2010. Wake up everybody.

  38. Simone

    @8 12 & 13

I have to agree with 8, I did watch the show and thought, from all the clips you could have shown, you choose the bucket of chicken scene. I was proud of Mo’Nique, so proud that she didn’t overdramatize when making her acceptance. I would say act, ghetto, but I’m tired of the phrase myself, but you all know what I mean.

She was poised, eloquent and accepted the award like she deserved it, versus, getting up there crying like a baby, like she owes them people something or it was the best thing since sliced bread.

  39. backingbarack

    @ 8

You could not have said it better. Monique was playing herself which is an angry loud filthy mouthed jealous black woman. Blame Oprah because she is pulling the strings behind this film and is the reason why Monique won anything.

Off Topic: Examples of Black actors/actresses who I enjoyed their performance where it should have been Oscar nominated or winning was Don Cheadle in Hotel Rwanda, Forrest Whittaker in The Last Kind of Scotland, Angela Bassett in What’s Love Got to do with it, etc. These are all biopics but they actually became the character and made you believe you were watching the actual person.

  40. Dude-N-Htown

…….What kills me about ppl is that yall analyze the hell outta a pic…or better yet
……draw conclusion about shows like the Grammy’s and how money was paid
…….so that certain artist could and so on…..

……..BUT something SOOOOOO clear, yall acting blind to. Since I’ve been alive,
…….every African American that has received a Best Actress/Actor or Supporting
    …….has played a “stereotypical” role.

…….I mean Will Smith did a GREAT job in Seven Pounds and Pursuit of Happ. and
    ……didn’t get 1 award…but lets see

…..Halle f*cks a white man and shows her tits….BEST ACTRESS
……Denzel a drug using, under handed cop….Best Actor
…….Jennifer H an angry, hurt, single mother (who can SANG)…Best SA
    …….And Mo a walfare, abusive, child molesting mother…Best SA….

  41. Dude-N-Htown

…The only actor that played role that was worthy of an Oscar and NOT
…..stereotypical was Forrest Whitaker…..and he makes my bows move.

  42. Dude-N-Htown

……Ohhhh and didnt realize my bot Anthony took home the best actor award..
…….maybe it’s jus my SISTAs who cant get outta of those types of roles.

  43. Sick

Yes she won. Now please CLOSE ur mouth Monique. Have so class you look like a HIPPO waiting to be fed.

Not every moment is a WIde MOuth moment.

    Congrats Again!

  44. SWAGGEDUPSTUD

CONGRADULATIONS BOTH MONIQUE N GEOFFREY SPECIALLY TO MONIQUE SHE DID AN EXCELLENT AMAZING JOB IN PRECIOUS EVERYBODY FROM GABBIE TO MARIAH CAREY TO LENNY KRAVITZ TO SHERRI SHEPARD DID AN EXCELLENT JOB ENJOY MONIQUE….

  45. SWAGGEDUPSTUD

BUT THE YELLING THAT SHE DOES SHE NEEDS TO KEEP IT DOWN A COUPLE OF 1000 OF NOTCHES LOL SERIOUSLY BECAUSE MAN THATS NOT A GOOD LOOK …

  46. MIMI

UM..#39, FORREST WON AN OSCAR FOR THAT ROLE SO WHAT R U TALKING ABOUT? AS FAR AS HALLE BERRY GOES, I DIDN’T THINK SHE DESERVED THE AWARD OR EVEN THE NOMINATION FOR THAT MATTER. I THINK SHE IS INCREDIBLY BEAUTIFUL, BUT ALSO INCREDIBLY OVERRATED AS AN ACTRESS. LOVE JHUD BUT HER PERFORMANCE WAS NOTHING SPECIAL. AND LIKE SOMEONE MENTIONED, WILL TOTALLY DESERVED THE OSCAR FOR ALI (SORRY DENZEL) AND PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS…I’M SURE HE’LL GET IT ONE DAY THOUGH

  47. Big DK

I’m not mad that Mo won. I think she played the heck out of her role.

What I AM mad at is that she didn’t thank GOD first. Yes, I know she said “God bless us all at the very end, but a woman who has expressed how much God means to her in her life should have given HIM the glory first and foremost. Thanking “the academy” first was Mo playing the same “politics” she thanked the academy for not playing.

But, I shouldn’t be surprised…Mo did tell Barbara Walters that she was ok with sex outside of her marriage, well, more like she was ok with her husband having sex outside the marriage…some folks will do anything to keep a man/woman…SMH

  48. RedbonegotthatKillBill

Congrats to her…from Queens of Comedy to Oscar is huge for her so congrats!

  49. MSZZZZFABULOUSE

I Co- sign with Number 40…

I’m just happy black people are winning oscars now… and monique killed her role she deserved the oscar. the only person who didn’t deserve her oscar in black history of people winning oscars was halle berry and i love halle, but all she did was have sex and show her tits. halle is not the best actress in the world.

  50. younghustla

Just to continue to son the asleep people in this thread, Forest Whitaker played a brutal dictator (Idi Amin) in The Last King of Scotland & he won over Will Smith’s powerful portrayal in The Pursuit of Happyness

    WAKE UP PEOPLE!

  51. SayItLoud

I have been so happy for Monique and this guy I did not even know who he was. I dosed off and when I opened my eyes I saw he won for best actor. I was elated. I had my Depends handy.

  52. SayItLoud

Oops, that is he won for best writer. cLap clap. Hercules, hercules. . .

  53. SayItLoud

Yeah yeah yeah. Look @ the kind of characters black actors and actresses winning for. Dont have the time 2 go into that but . . . hey . . . what could I say. How come Morgan really couldn’t get Best Actor 4 playing a tremendous charcter for his portrayal of Nelson Mandella.

  54. SayItLoud

Monique looked gorgeous. She looked really comfortable in her gown. I had given her a B for the acting. An F for the character she played. That would mean the other nominees got less than a B. Enjoy ur reign gyul.

  55. DAE

good for her ,now shave your legs.

  56. gator

i got the word in the wind . that when MO nique was giving her acceptance speech , and giving props to those in the past. samuel l. jackson was in the audience tear’n his face up, twist’n his mouth and mean mugg’n. Samuel J. you need to stop– still ——— study and stand there. all them step and fetch’ed roles you took before you hit it big. you need to sit yo ass down before i make change……… trick. respect your black sister’s win at the oscars. when they put the camera on you,,,,,, it was you who looked like the grinch.

  57. Mrs. PT

Why is everyone jumping to conclusions about Samuel L. Jackson? Could it be he made that face because of what someone next to him about something totally different? Lay off the man, you weren’t there, you don’t know. geez… people are so freaking negative!

  58. v8

Who cares!!! My boyfriend thinks the same with me. He- is eight years older than me, lol. 59. BK

Way to go Mo’Nique!! Can’t wait to see your show in LA! Got awesome seats!

  60. Mrs. Sk8board P (ak & bk stan)

Congrats to Mo and Geoffery Fletcher.

Wether the role Mo played was stereotypical or not, her performance was amazing. Let the woman live and enjoy her golden statue. Some actors get the opportunity to deliver amazing performances early in their careers and some later. She got her shot, and DELIVERED! she deserves it.
