HOT OR NOT: LABAN KING – “ONE CHANCE”

April 10th, 2010

♫ Laban King – One Chance

Laban King has been making music for over 20 years, singing with various choirs in the metro Detroit area before working on his solo R&B/pop career five years ago.

Now he’s set to release his debut album, The Fall Out, next month via ZUPITER Entertainment, a multimedia entertainment company and independent label he created with Brooks Lane. Check out Laban King’s first single, “One Chance”, written by Laban and EJ Wright and produced by JDS, Karen Clark Sheard’s son.

Here goes… the Good: The production is top notch, the vocal arrangement and the fills and runs are very well executed.. the Bad: AUTOTUNE SUCKS BUTT…Takes away from your voice. Never heard of you but i wouldn’t take you seriously as a mainstream artist if i never heard your real voice. The song was so so until the 1:00 mark where it was sorta decent. The hook is to repetitive.. (too radioish) song has no soul. I would hate to perform or listen to this song live since the pitch is so high. If you have been doin music for 20 years.. lets hear the real you.

Seems to me that most artist now a days are so predictable to their approach of how they do a song! The typical auto-tune bull crap! So glad to see this type of music dying off fast!

I really like the song. Autotune is overwhelming, however that is the phenom, but the song is A1. I really like the Vocal Arrangement and the words are Amazing. It is really catchy.

Laban King… Kill the autotune… It makes you sound like EVERYONE else out there. Theres nothing unique about your voice that makes you stand out. Perhaps w/o it, we can really hear what you have to offer. Just some honest critcism.

The production is really good, the vocals aren’t there. Never heard of this guy, but he needs to decide what kind of artist he wants to be. Either he wants to be a musician, and focus on his quality of sound and develop that sound, or he wants to be an artist and sell a bunch of records. They should be one in the same, but…ya’ll know how that goes. I mean either way, Good luck to him.Work on your vocals.Kudos to the production though!

Yeah I love your natural voice….the beat is sick and I love the vibe to it…BUT the autotune doesn’t do you justice. Although as a hater of it I do think you did it well.

Considering the volatility of the economy, the lack of creativity, and the dying nature of the industry as a whole- i think we need to give credit to those who are still pursuing their dream! Perhaps the autotune music genre is over done, but do we blame all the artists for “playing it safe” as we all do during times and moments of crisis?’`.. i think he was quite innovative and polished in the composition, lyrics, and over all ambiance because if anything, we need artists that portray messages with content that is not necessarily related to sex, drugs, clubbing, etc.;; this song is depicting a struggle we all can relate to… something we’ve all wanted at some point in our lives…one more chance’`..

I’m sorry but Laban is a non-singer. He has great business sense and a lot of connects, but he cannot sing. He does BETTER with auto-tune because his natural voice is NOT good….I’ve Heard it!!!

I dig the song. It’s Radio friendly which is what you need to survive in this current state of music. If Radio won’t play it, its worthless.

Laban is the truth! Love the appeal of the record. It’s not for every1 at all; i’m sure these “educated” views of your song and style up here arent even from seasoned music industry vets, so keep your style and push forward man, you’ll be amazing in the international market, which is actually a better market to break as a pop artist with a different edgy appeal. American’s are definitely overly critical and get up on game way late. Do you man, and congrats on the effort!

He is a very talented person… BUT like many have said the “Auto-Tune” is REALLY LATE these days! And I’ve heard this record before… It’s been out over a year now, time for some new material. There are too many other independent artist out that are going HARD & actually are SINGING! For instance, Mateo, Chanj, Justin Nozuka, Brentley, Sebastian Mego, just to name a few! take note from these NON-AUTO -TUNE vocalist! It’s 2010 please get more creative! Thats all.

Great piece of work and I’m a huge fan of JDS production on this track. It shines through so evidently and the lyrics are on point Laban and EJ need props on this. The autotune feels real good on the track. I could see myself wilding out to the club with this joint. Don’t front. You know you gonna be in the club shaking your ass to this joint!!!

I’m so glad I finally heard something from Laban. I love the record. All I can say is to keep it going and push forward. . . On a side note…music for over 20 years? How old is he? I’m going to play safe and hope that means he started singing at 4 because I didn’t think it was possible for him to do music for 20 years lol.

Yayy Laban!!! Great for you man :) To the people who are complaining about auto-tune: Yall are the main ones who be in the club wildin’ out to “Blame It” and every other club track that is auto-tuned up. Hatin’ on people is not a career lames… It’s so easy to be a commentator but never step in the ring. Wake up!

How is someone hating on a song?
People said they don’t like the autotune – that’s their opinion.
    Get it right.

    Lool @ #1 though.

I agree – hate the autotune and don’t really like the song.

The song is fun and I could see the clubs loving this. The vocals aren’t there on this song and I know this cat can sing. I think the song is cool though. I’ve personally always hated auto tune so this takes away from the song in my eyes.

Laban the shit is sick and I know you are driven to give the world your heart through your music. Keep it up and look at people who have dedicated their life to their craft and have yet to move away from the church or the shit the bathroom shower. You have something and those that are hating are just fuel to the fire… hey let the haters keep their job since clearly they have nothing else working for them :cP

    not yet...

As soon as the music started, I expected Kiely Williams to come in with, “The Sex was Spec-ta-Culah!”

I agree with folks about the auto-tune–this sounds like everything else that is manufactured in the studio, but the artist has little or no vocal ability elsewhere (Well, auto-tune is not even vocal ability at all). There is absolutely nothing distinctive about this artist’s voice when we don’t even know what it really sounds like.

    The Truth

Song is ok, nothing new or special. Antares Autotune … everybody does it, so you can’t knock him for it. However, I’m not sure if he’ll make much of a splash in the industry. He’s known somewhat around Detroit, however not as a singer. He’s known alot on the gay-scene, so if he did make it big (which I doubt, no offense), he’ll have alot of homosexual news published about him. I don’t think that would be such a good look. But hey he could try for Logo or something. He should work on singing from his diaphragm, instead of his throat and nose, he could make his autotune use sound much more effective and good. Trust I’m a singer myself. But I wish him the best of luck. God Bless.

    The Whole Truth

Ok here is my thoughts. I never heard of this dude.  I am not a fan of auto tune. However you can tell this man can sing because if you hear other songs with auto tune from other artist (Like T-Pain or Kanye West) they don’t even sound as good as him. This song is banger. I can very well see this being a summer hit. I am interested in hearing more from this dude. Plus this is some of the best production that I have heard in a minute. At the end of the day I can see myself getting drunk in the club off of this.
