MAG COVERS/SCANS: JILL SCOTT COVERS ESSENCE MAGAZINE + SHOWS OFF HER SON JETT

Jill Scott is the the cover story for the May issue of Essence and even posed for a photo with 9-month-old son Jett.

The singer/actress opens up about the difficult road that led her to single motherhood, the sister circle that helps her get by, and the perfect life she enjoys today. Peep photos and a snippet below.

On Motherhood:
“Ever since I had my son, I feel like there’s a stitch of lava in my spine. I feel like I can do anything. I felt completely overwhelmed by being a mom. I always wanted it, but when I actually got it, it was so much more than I had anticipated. I’ve always liked and appreciated myself, but now it’s deeper and stronger and I like it.”

  17. ZION HILL

I like Jill Scott. She is a very good artist and her strength is something not usually shown in female singers since Nina Simone. Jill is also a real singer and that is very rare in modern music. She also seems very comfortable in here own skin.
But this posting does not go deeper into the actual article. What this posting does not mention is that Jill is also another single unwed mother. I think the message this sends out to other young black women is very negative but typical of ESSENCE. Why have sex with a man you don’t know well enough to marry?
Why are the “men” to these women so disposable? Why can’t women who are “successful ” also can’t seem to be successful in raising their children with both parents in a proper FAMILY. Nothing can replace the power and a man and a woman in a relationship and children need BOTH parents.
Then Jill goes on to discuss inter-racial love saying in essence that it’s not for her. Well neither is love with a Black man! So what is her point???
It’s funny in the other posting people were discussing “BLACK LOVE”. I think people don’t know what love is let alone what “BLACK LOVE” really is. I just find that term silly and this Magazine a JOKE. Black women need to get it together and stop marginalizes the black men in their lives. Jill Scott is a good artist but she is not a man. Men need to raise their son’s but Black women need to also know their place in a relationship and what partnership really means. And Jill also needs to learn how to be woman. It’s funny that Essence celebrates all the wrong things. And you can see why so many Black females are confused. I seem to remember a cover of Kim Porter and Sean Combs declaring “Black LOVE”. That was a funny cover. This term is really a joke in this community and people need to really define what love means but none of the people they apply it to really show it. Most celebrity relationships are not even real. People just like false images and we continue to have single mothers raising half baked “males”.

  18. backing back-to-back

Why does that photo with her holding her son look like a PSA print ad for a halfway house or a social agency????

  19. Anissa

Gotta love Jill Scott! She is just so natural & her baby is gorgeous!!

  20. FallBackHaters

Gorgeous fam! Jill Scott is a natural beauty.

  21. WHY WHY RACIST with an excuse!!

I`ve Never liked her and now she made it worse. HOW THE HELL are you going to support segregation in 2010?
Black man can marry whoever they want. Have you ever heard about black man who complained when Whoopi was marrying all those white man or when halle berry got a baby with a white guy?

Get on with your Life Lady!!

  22. Get'em

I absolutely love Jill Scott. Like I know her or something lol but she gives that energy. Gotta Love It!!!

  23. Tasha

Check her out live, she’s amazing!!!!!!!! Get Em Jill!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  24. ????????????

I KNEW SOMEONE WOULD COME ON HERE AND START PREACHING ABOUT SINGLE MOTHERHOOD.

WHEN OH WHEN IS ANYONE GOING TO ADDRESS THE MEN THAT DON’T STICK AROUND AND TAKE CARE OF THESE BABIES THAT THEY MAKE? (NOT SAYING THAT JILL’S SON’S FATHER DOESN’T TAKE CARE OF HIM) BUT JUST IN GENERAL. THE WOMEN ARE THERE TAKING CARE OF BUSINESS DAY IN AND DAY OUT WHILE THE MEN GET TO PICK AND CHOOSE WHAT DAY THEY WANT TO BE A FATHER WHEN IT’S CONVENIENT FOR THEM.

  25. wtf

***waiting for Judah to show up and bash another beautiful black woman***

  26. JUDAH

    —-@ZION HILL

—-Thank you ma’am. Very well said. I’ve spoken many times on the so-called “black
—-love” mantra that is regurgitated by most black females with their lack of regard or
—-understanding of what love is about, much less “black love”. Most black women
—-don’t even love themselves, so how can they love another person? This is why
—-many of them have a child in the first place, so that they can have something that
—-MUST love them and CAN’T leave them. This of course implies that the average
—-black woman understands that she has a personality and demeanor that no adult
—-can endure for elongated periods of time. So they have to justify their loneliness
—-and bitterness by contriving the “strong black woman” image which is based in
—-arrogance and pride (Proverbs 16:18). People must understand that magazines like
—-”JET” and “ESSENCE” are run by white jews, just like channels like BET. This is
—-why the same tactics are used, which is cater to the ego of the black woman so
—-that they do not realized that they are being pawned. Every reality show on
—-television features a whiny, tatooed, simple-minded black woman that laments her
—-life or is trying to “rebuild” lol. Whatever. Now the new tactic is to put the black
—-woman on television and make her look like the fool that she is by claiming that
—-she cannot find a “good (black) man” lol, which is to imply that she is “good”.

—-I will say that the black man has become expendable because the average black
—-man makes himself expendable by not making himself an asset to himself. Black
—-men don’t invest the time in themselves that black women do, which is why they
—-are not as productive for themselves, which is what they should be concerned with.
—-This is why the only time the black woman speaks about black men in interracial
—-relationships is when that black man is doing well for himself lol. This of course
—-shows that most black women view black men simply as a commodity. Nothing
—-long lasting can be built with creatures that are as vanity driven as most black
    —-women are.

    —-@WHY WHY RACIST

—-She’s fronting. That “pro-black” jargon is part of her image. In all reality she
—-clearly hates black men, and I gurantee you that she has slept with her share of
—-white men and probably white women as well. The point of her saying what she
—-said about her “soul burning” when she sees a SUCCESSFUL black man with a
—-white woman is to instill the same hate and bitterness in other black women that
—-she has. People must remember that she is an actress lol. This means that she
—-is always capable of depicting herself in whatever light she wants to be viewed in.
—-I believe that her child’s father was a h*mosexual sperm donor and the marriage
—-was a sham to give her a child with no strings attached, but justification that she
—-”tried with a black man” lol.

—-If black women were genuine with their anger about interracial relationships, they
—-could be taken seriously, but the fact of the matter is that they have no problem
—-with black women who engage in interracial relationships. This shows that most
—-black women believe that the black man is beneath them and can be dictated to.

  27. JUDAH

    —@WTF

—Lmao, I couldn’t let you down sis. Let me also say that this woman is down with
—the “program” in more ways than one. She’s wearing the masonic “black, white,
—and red”. The underlying spiritual reason why you’re seeing many of these “famous”
—black women raising babies by themselves is because they are playng out the
—”Isis/Horus” ritual. In other words, she is a goddess that can bring forth seed on her
—own. The only “male” worthy of her is the sun god “Osiris”.

  28. No Racism, No need for an excuse

In my opinion, Jill Scott says things that a lot of Black women… women…. think but don’t necessarily have the platform. If you listen to her music, read her lyrics, poetry and or articles you know she’s thinking out loud. Sometimes our thoughts aren’t politically correct!

Don’t jump all over me or other Black women when I ask: What is wrong with a Black woman questioning why SOME Black men won’t date a Black woman? Why would someone consider Jill to be a racist for asking why? (Recent Essence article) Please, don’t answer by grouping Black women in a category of unhealthy, uneducated, unclean, and loud and or an embarrassment to the female gender either. These characteristics are within all ethnicities. For that matter, any positive or negative comment you can think of or make can be applied to some women of any ethnicity. However, I’ve known and have heard Black men who use the characteristics I noted as an excuse for why they are dating outside their race. Do they have mothers, aunts, sisters, etc…? If so, do they think the same things about them? Some are willing to endure so many things in lieu having the relationship, but won’t do this for a Black woman. I am aware of the history behind the intentional divide of the Black relationship. But, I still ask, why?

Date who you want to date, but don’t make lame excuses. Last, don’t hate on me or other Black woman who’s living within the recent statistics and who loves Black men and just ask, why?

  29. CHEEKO

    AT ZION HILL AND JUDAH….

ESSENCE IS A JOKE, AND AS MUCH AS I LOVE JILL SCOTT AND AGREE WITH YOU ALL ON THAT, THE BABY’S FATHER MOST DEFINITELY ISN’T A H*MOSEXUAL. HE’S ACTUALLY A LEGENDARY MUSICIAN THAT HAS HAD HIS FAIR SHARE OF WOMEN.

EVERYONE GETS JILL SCOTT’S RESPONSE, BUT EVEN WITH HIS LONG CAREER, HE ISN’T AS FAMOUS. THERE ARE TWO SIDES TO EVERY STORY. WHILE I BELIEVE HE EITHER DOES AND DEFINITELY SHOULD BE THE ROCK IN HIS SON’S LIFE, HIS SIDE OF THE STORY DEPICTS JILL LITERALLY RUNNING HIM OFF A WITHIN A SHORT PERIOD OF CHILDBIRTH…

SO JILL’S INCONSISTENCY WITH BLACK MEN…OR ANY MAN FOR THAT MATTER, MAKES SENSE. CIAO.

  30. CHEEKO

    ESSENCE CAN GO TO HELL

  31. MSSunnySoufBunny

I can actually see the God in Jill.

    Beautiful.

  32. MSSunnySoufBunny

Judah please don’t use the HOLY bible to support your degrading views of us as Black women… Yes some of us do have some serious issues that should be addressed..

But the manner that you do it in puts MOST of us in that negative light.. And that is just wrong.

I declare in the name of Jesus Christ that I am a strong black woman… beautiful inside and out… flaw’d and all… and I will commit and become a great wife one day and ensure that my Black husband is happy to be with such.. EVERY DAY… our love will grow in prosper… In the name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.

I can and will do all things through Christ in which gives me the strength…

Have to pray that negative energy far far away.

What good do you have to say about us brother? And by brother..
I don’t assume you are a black man. We are all brothers and sisters in Christ.

  33. MSSunnySoufBunny

j JUDAAAAHH!!!!!! WHY DO YOU KEEP SAYING BLACK WOMEN ARE ANGRY….

WHERE DO YOU LIVE???? AND WHAT BLACK WOMEN ARE YOU AROUND?

I I KNOW I JUST PRAYED BUT DAMN YOU MAKE ME WANNA CURSE…

I IMMA STAY COOL CALM AND COLLECTED THOUGH…

LET YOU TELL IT… WE STAY MAD ABOUT SOMETHING.

STOP PISSIN US OFF!!! SO IRRITATED BY THOSE COMMENTS.

    YOU NEED A HUG “JUDAH.”
I WISH I COULD SHOW YOU MY PRETTY SMILE AND GIVE YOU A TIGHT HUG AND HELP YOU OUT OF THAT SITUATION YOU ARE IN WITH US BLACK WOMEN.

    DAMMIT JILL!!!!

    Hey Oh Hey Yeah
Oh yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah

    Verse 1:
    I’m taking my freedom
    Pulling it off the shelf
    Putting it on my chain
    Wearing it ’round my neck
    I’m taking my freedom
    Putting it in my car
    Wherever I choose to go
    It will take me far
    I’m…

    Chorus:
Living my life like it’s golden
Living my life like it’s golden
Living my life like it’s golden
Living my life like it’s golden
Living my life like it’s golden, golden
    (Repeat)

    Verse 2:
    I’m taking my own freedom
    Putting it in my song
    Singing loud and strong
    Grooving all day long
    I’m taking my freedom
    Putting it in my stroll
    I be high-stepping ya’ll
    Letting the joy unfold
    I’m…

    Chorus:
Living my life like it’s golden
Living my life like it’s golden
Living my life like it’s golden
Living my life like it’s golden
Living my life like it’s golden, golden
    (Repeat)

    Verse 3:
I’m holding on to my freedom
    Can’t take it from me
I was born into it and it comes naturally
    I’m strumming my own freedom
    Playing the God in me
    Representing His glory
    Hope He’s proud of me!
    Yeah!

    Chorus:
Living my life like it’s golden
Living my life like it’s golden (Hope he’s proud of me!)
Living my life like it’s golden
Living my life like it’s golden
Living my life like it’s golden, golden
    (Repeat)

    Hook:
Living my life, Like it’s golden, golden, golden, golden, golden, golden
    (Sing until fade with ad-libs)

  37. JUDAH

    ——@MSSUNNY

——Ms., why do you keep speaking to me lol? You’re obviously a whore and an idiot.
——Christ did not make you a “strong black woman”. Satan did. I don’t need to hear
——about your silly “husband” aspirations. Save it for your pastor. The “God” in Jill
——that you see is the same demon that resides in you. That is why you and her are
——on one accord. You do not know the Bible, nor much else. On every other thread
——you speak as a whore, so don’t change up here. Be who and what you really are.
——Lol, you make a mockery of the Bible when you attempt to speak on it because
——the Lord did not give the woman the spirit or the ability to teach the Word (I Tim
    ——2:12-15).

    ——@RAIN

——I can tell that you’re a nut. Stop worrying about the white female lol. They’re
——always on the minds of many of you black women because you wish that you
    ——were them.

    ——@MY SOUL AIN’T FOR SALE

——Exactly lol. If I wanted to I could address this deceitful whore, Jill Scott, but I’m
——not inclined to do so. She is sent out to misdirect the average black woman with
——the ultimate goal of convincing the sisters to worship themselves, which is
——working. In the Egyptian mysteries, the phallus of Osiris is worshiped and it is
——known as the “Golden Shaft of Osiris”. This is why this clown is “living her life
——like it is golden” i.e. she has accepted Osiris as her consort. In the MK-ULTRA
——program, children are sexually defiled with a replica of the “golden shaft” of
——Osiris. Also notice that her new disk is called “The Light of the Sun”.

  38. in_my_bag_son

    Judah…that was food for thought.

  39. TYRA IS A LIAR!!

FIRST BLACK WOMEN ARE CRAZY, ANGRY, AND HAVE ISSUES….NOW WE WANT TO BE WHITE WOMEN? LMAO. PALE, CAN’T ENJOY THE SUN, FLAT BUTT, STRINGY HAIR, NO LIPS, NO HIPS, SILICONE BOOBS, WEAK AS HELL, WORSHIP A MAN FOR HIS WALLET WHITE WOMEN..YES SIGN ME UP. THAT’S EXACTLY WHAT I WANT TO BE IN LIFE. *ROLLS EYES*

  40. My Soul Aint For Sale

    Judah…..
I did notice the name of her cd when I first heard about it months ago!!
I wonder what lie she will tell explaining why she chose to call it The Light of the Sun. Jill performed a song at her live show a few years ago that she said, “came to her in a dream”. The song was about how (her) god spoke to her and told her how he is in control of everything, none of this would be possible without him and he is living within her. She was not referring to God the heavenly Father, she was singing about satan.

  41. 5 days to go

So now even when a person speaks about God it’s always satan that they are referring to? Wtf is wrong with some of you people on this site? Why are you so obsessed with people being devilworshippers?

  42. N.O.Finest_504

So luv her!!! Her son is sooooo cute! Add him to the list of cutest celebrity babies- and She is wearing the beck out of those dresses! I can’t wait to read her story- where is my Essence Magazine in the mail?! LOl

Who says plus size, healthy can’t look good in floor length print?! Watch ya mouth!

  43. ☆☆☆5STARCHICK☆☆

    looking good Jilly from Philly!

  44. wordblaze

the manifestation of fear has people calling even those who love the Lord devil worshippers…those who express their art…devil worshippers…those who are human and flawed…devil worshippers…

Judah is there no room for human error or growth on your planet? if not…can you please go their already and leave the rest of us “heathens” (especially ANYONE who has the right/gall to challenge you alone already?

apparently you have a personal relationship with Jesus….can you ask him (since you know him better than I or ANY one else on the planet) why he made you, one of his messengers, so damn angry and hateful

it appears as if only you know the bible, or God…or goodness and yet you call your own black women whores…yeah…mighty Christ-like of you…I’m sure Jesus would approve….NOT!

I promise you…simply because I wrote this message…he will call me every name in the book…in….5….4….3….

  45. golden

I think that Jill has some issues that she needs to deal with. But she’s no different from any of the other women in the E business now-a-dayz, as we now see. This actually reminds me of the Janelle Monae write up Judah did.   She is likely just perpetrating the same values just to get a paycheck – - – - or, she actually really and truly believes in this crap. Spiritual propaganda or not, it does affect the listener, both male and female.
