‘ROUND THE WAY: KIELY WILLIAMS ANSWERS CRITICS OF “SPECTACULAR”

23 year-old singer/actress Kiely Williams must have got wind of all the negative feedback regarding her new music video for “Spectacular” because she released an official statement early Thursday morning, where she speaks on the controversial video and its message..

I am an actor and performer. I have been so since my first role in a television pilot at five years old. I played a character when I was a “Cheetah Girl.” I am playing a character in the music video for the song “Spectacular,” as I did in the “Cheetah Girl” movies. The fact is, that sometimes women get intoxicated and have unprotected sex. My video puts this issue front and center. It is absurd to infer or suggest that I am condoning this behavior. Are Lady Gaga and Beyonce advocating murder with the “Telephone” video? Of, course not. Was Rihanna encouraging suicide with “Russian Roulette?” No. Was Madonna suggesting that young unmarried girls get pregnant with “Papa Don’t Preach?” I don’t think so. Is Academy Award winner Monique a proponent of incest because of her portrayal of Mary in the movie “Precious.” Clearly, the answer is no. I wrote “Spectacular” and made the video to bring attention to a serious women’s health and safety issue. Don’t shoot the messenger.

@ Judah, are you serious? I realize that you are speaking from a strictly contemporary lens (which is also a very moralistic one) but to suggest that black women are “the leading whores” in entertainment is problematic on many registers. First, you suffer from a severe case of the virgin/whore dichotomy. From this perspective, women can only exist in these two extremely oppressive sexual spaces and must walk a very paranoiac line to maintain their reputations. Women are constantly under surveillance when it comes to the politics of sexuality. They are either defending themselves against charges of “whoredom” or aligning themselves with various characteristics of the “virgin.” This is one idea that needs serious discussion. Second, you have a very Romantic view of women’s sexuality pre-Lil’ Kim. In your estimation, when Lil Kim released “Hard Core” in 1996 black women’s sexuality became “questionable.” This idea is ludicrous on so many levels, but when I think about brilliant artists like “Ma” Rainey and Bessie Smith, who began challenging rigid proscriptions of black women’s sexuality based upon the whore/virgin dichotomy in the 1920s, I wonder what they would have to say about your extremely myopic view of black women’s sexuality? I can venture to say that it wouldn’t be good.

At this point in Keily’s career, she is unable to fully articulate a sexual self that she completely feels comfortable with. She released this terrible, disingenuous statement because she was afraid to simply state that this is one way that a woman’s night (un-raced) may get played out- period. She was afraid to defend her work outside of the moralistic, PSA non-sense. So glad Madonna did not feel compelled to defend her video “Justify My Love.” In terms of a black woman that you mentioned from the 90’s, I am so thankful that Janet Jackson released her masterpiece “The Velvet Rope.” This album challenges the virgin/whore dichotomy by refusing to accept the idea that someone or some moral proscription has claim to one’s sexuality. Since Britney Spears has already been castigated enough in the media, I guess people decided to give her a break when she explored a very similar theme, as Keily, on her song “Blur,” which is featured on her album “Circus.” But since black women, as you suggest, monopolize the position of “whore” in entertainment, my mentioning of Madonna’s and Spears’ work is a moot point.

desperate for fame? thats all im saying…

Lol content was barely the issue. It was quality. That video was low-budget and a waste of our time. After hearing her response I actually wish I’d lasted the whole video to get a feel for what she is referring to. I watched maybe thirty five seconds of it.

Excuses, excuses, excuses, that is what is coming out of Kiely’s mouth, she need to sit down. Her statement is truly a bunch of bs, how are you trying to bring awarness about safe sex in a video where your dancin around in your underwear with a naked dude’s butt all up in the air. Kiely…girl bye.

  5. Mother Jefferson

@ R U SERIOUS??? NEW DC SOCIALITE BUT MADE MY OWN MONEY

You are right about those stats. But what Im saying is why is this girl ANY different from any other artist pushing sex and bad choices? Everybody else gets a pass because they got some status in the industry? In that case Rihanna, Beyonce and Lady Gaga need to enroll in community college ASAP!

These comments are hilarious….lol!!!!! I didn’t watch the video nor have I heard the song…and I don’t want to…she has NEVER had any talent and she sounds like she sucks her thumb when she does “try” to sing or rap….I can only imagine what her “mature” sound is like….lmao!!!!!!

And she does dress/act way older than her actual age….

Keily…in the words of Martin…”somebody don told you WRONG”….

  7. NATALIA

Point taken. Still a poor delivery.

  8. nunu

She sounds stupid! That song was just dumb as hell!! If it was catchy and fun enough people would like it on here too! The thing about Rihanna, Beyonce, and Gaga is that their sex songs are actually good enough to sell out the masses. Notice when they sing about sex they sing it in a playful manner with a tight ass beat. This bitch was dead serious really thought she was rocking somebody’s mind with her ish. She failed miserably. I never really heard Gaga or Rihanna moaning and shit whispering about some damn sex. Don’t nobody wanna hear that shit. Give me something else Kiely.

    BULLSHIT!
    A new show
    has just premiered:
When dumb songs make stupid ass videos!
Come on now girl…..It was a deep mistake and you know it!
    _______________________________________________________

@ Thunda Diva – That statement you make very funny. That would be funny VH1 special.

On The Real Though, Wasn’t she dating producer J.R Rotem?

  11. Kaileigh

I think her statement is a bunch of bs. It would sound great and mean a lot more if the lyrics of the song were not talking about how she’d do it again. The lyrics showed no remorse for her promiscious lyrics. I was thinking ok, she’s singing about how her night began and as the song continues, she’s going to have a good point that makes you think or make her 2nd guess herself. That didn’t happen.

  12. Marie

This video is not the bad people need to back off … Give her a chance to grow when teens work for Disney they expect them to be 30 years old and still be singing kids songs WTF that’s why Britney shaved her head check ur kids messages on their cells and they will have nastier things …..

    ——KORNFLAKEBOI

——Lmao…..nigga please. Let me ask you something sir, are you a h*mosexual?
——All that nonsense you wrote, and you failed to address or counter anything I said
——due to your poor reading comprehension. I said that the black female in
——entertainment had a CLASSIER IMAGE before the Lil Kim super-whore
——archetype, and I maintain that. I did not say that the black woman ever had a
——CLASSY IMAGE in entertainment and certainly not in this captivity lol. You are
——attempting to establish a series of gray areas for the sexual conduct of the
——woman, and I have no time for that lol. This is what implies to me that you’re a
——h*mosexual, because the h*mosexual reaps benefits from the whoredom of the
——woman because the marriage structure is broken down, and leeway is given to
——wanton and inordinate lusts. Again, and hopefully for the last time I will have to
——explain this to you, I stated that the IMAGE of the black woman in entertainment
——changed with Lil Kim. That is what the conversation is about lol. Can you read
——and comprehend sir? After Lil Kim, wanton raunchiness became the modus
——operandi of the depiction of the black female in mass televised media. You have
——to understand a point to refute it. Million dollar words do not denote a million
——dollar brain lol. You are certainly flaky.

  14. Rain

Not tryna be mean but Kiely can’t talk about having sex drunk with a stranger but Usher can talk about having a threesome unprotected….?

  15. Dubs

@#3 She only did the chorus . . . .not like they haven’t heard the song before.
