Erykah Badu sat down for a chat with Wanda Sykes to discuss her “Window Seat” video which she says was “grossly misunderstood all over the United States of America” following criminal charges filed against her on Friday.
She explains that contrary to reports she’s defiling President John F. Kennedy’s legacy, she was honoring the revolutionary. In the same way that he was not afraid to butt heads with America, she was “not afraid to show America her butt-naked truth”. Check out her “Window Seat” performance below.
ERYKAH BADU PERFORMS “WINDOW SEAT”

I love New Amerykah, pt. 2…can’t stop playing it!
Firist!!!! Good performance
I love Erykah, I totally understand how individualism can be attacked, abused, and assassinated. I think that she made a great statement getting nude, and I am glad to see someone do something with some purpose and a message behind it, not walking around flashing your stuff, with coca cola cans in your hair. I think it’s time we get back to creating real art, and being real. BUY THAT ALBUM!!!!
Always,
Monroe
I am happy she got the publicity she was seeking. I hope it helps her album sales…I know it diffinitely made me listen to the song which I have to agree I wouldnt have listen to had I not know that she was stripping in the video. Now I love the track.
EVERYONE IS NOT GONNA UNDERSTAND YOUR CRAFT…EVERYONE IS NOT GONNA UNDERSTAND YOU MOTIVES…BUT GUESS WHAT “LIFE” IS STILL GOIN.! BTW..I LOVE HER.!
she’s so weird. wanda was actually hilarious for once lol. middle seat.
What was the butt naked truth? I mean cause all I saw was you stripping going down the street. What was the message? Could someone please inform me.
so stripping butt naked in an open area with children, who can’t comprehend what art is yet, is considered art Mrs Erika?? interesting
again people her message was against groupthink…
The message is simple: People try to assassinate your character when you try to step against the grain. That’s where the gunshot in the video came.
I loved it.
OKAY ALREADY! We get what she was doing BUT she did it the wrong way. If you’re going to do some shit like that, do it on a closed set. She has no right to force her ideals on anyone and vice versa. There were kids on that street and she had no damn business stripping in front of someone else’s children. I don’t know WTF she was thinking. If you disagree then HTF would you feel if your child’s teacher decides to strip and teach class one day? Exactly. I got her point but there is a respectful way to get a point across. That wasn’t respectful; it was irresponsible and selfish. Plus you can be an individual all you want but your ass don’t live in the United States of Me so feel free to think about that crap before doing something reckless.
@ KELLZ u said She has no right to force her ideals..WELL GAYS force it on society every 3 seconds..,LADY GAGA,MTV i could go on ..MTV its almost like be straight is corny and WE are the Elephant in the Room. ?? Badu well …lol
see the concept is simple. freedom is never really free. society will try to shoot down individualism. take a look around. if someone is not the conformed individual then they are labeled weird, strange and often the object of ridicule.
serena williams for one—her body is not like every other female’s so she gets scored heavily.
You guys acting like children are traumatized over her butt nekkidness. . Children arent going to look at a nekkid ladies body as sexual. The only ones that are traumatized are the adults/parents.
PEOPLE THERE WERE NO CHILDREN ON THAT STREET. WERE YOU THERE? HELL NO SO STFU.
@KELLZ: Please stop with the ignorance.
@UGOTIT: WOW really…homosexuals with promotion codes for success stories I dont agree with it. But be yourseld.
I love the live instruments i had to get that onto my ipod. love love love the album… It’s not that big of a deal. She got nude in her video some like it and some don’t. I did who didnt’? just like some liked Rihannas rude boy video and some didnt [im not comparing just making a point] but it doesnt make sense to spend so much time shooting a woman down, or trying to pull strings to bring others against her. people express their creativity in different ways and some people see the line between acceptable and unacceptable, and some dont. i thought lady gaga throwing her crotch in front of the camera was far more disgusting but she got hundreds of millions of views and a number 2 on the billboard hot 100. if u dont like it, the good thing is you dont have to. and u dont have to watch or listen. but so many are and so many will! the negative votes DONT COUNT!
LUV Erykah and her nudity and her music!!!!!
I am lovin this tune, its on repeat in my house
I’m sorry but I do not support Badu. I can “respect” some of her music (at times) but I’ve always had problems with her IMAGE. Erykah is so fake and confused. I just don’t get where she see’s herself as some “revolutionary” like JFK…PLEASE! She wants to be a revolutionary by association while trying to drum up attention for her CD sales. It’s funny how her “revolutionary” activism only follows a CD release date. LOL
This video was simply a PUBLICITY stunt to sell this record. This notion that she had to make a comment on individuality was actually a stolen idea from two other white artist named Matt and Kim (and trust me they were not being revolutionary when they did it).So much for “originality” huh Erykah?
And to whomever said kids are not offended or traumatize by a naked woman or forced nudity….that is not for Erykah to decide. If those were my children at that park.. trust me I would press charges on her. And let’s be clear she selected those children to pull this stunt in front of just like she added the JFK part to inspire outrage and drum up attention for her CD. All of this was done for shock value and it’s offensive because it’s inauthentic and transparent. I think some people are so used to seeing artist like Young Money and Keri Hilson that they think Badu is something special and people are not conscience of what messages they are actually getting and again consumers need to be smarter about the things they accept. I hope the people who were exposed to this stunt hit Badu in the pocketbook and you will see her “revolutionary” stances change quicker than her many “baby fathers”.
Repulsive!
Yeah, I guess it’s kinda hard to see the “revolutionary” angle when you so easily swap body fluids with men. Ewwwwwww!!!!!!
But the album is solid!
These “individuals” and “artists” crack me up! Cut the crap; YA’LL AIN’T THAT DEEP! That video was a strategic commercial move to renew interest in her career. As long as Beyonce is shaking her rump to Video Phone, all these female artists have to get in where they fit in and that’s exactly what Erykah did.
@ 14 u must not have children??! In todays society children have no choice but to know about sex. Alot of people, tv, etc have exposed them. And it may not come in the form of hardcore but they know and I would have been shedding my childrens eyes because I wouldn’t want them to think its okay to be naked in public because you have all kinds of perverts looking for a chance to get off. So Yes she could have done it on a set like they do all the time. But I like her music but like that would be akward as a parent to trying to explain that.
@ZionHill…the Matt and Kim thing…she admitted as much, that she got the idea from them. I personally LOVE the concept, althought I cant say I agree with how the message was put across, I can appreciate the message. And OF COURSE her revolutionary tactics line up with her albums, she wants to get her message across, I would’nt call it publicity moreso than drawing attention to what she has to say. She is not the first and will not be the last person to go out nude in public to ‘stand for something’.
love her and wanda is a clown
@ 20 she gave Matt and Kim their shout out as an inspiration for the video.. it’s not that serious
i cant stop listening to this song i effinn love it!!
I can’t see the vid!!! Just a lime green screen. Damnit.
great performance & hilarious parody from wanda!
the album is a masterpiece!

what the hell does her baby fathers have to do with anything? people’s personal lives isnt much of your business. It isnt erykah’s fault that your life isn’t sexually satisfying, that you have to speak negatively of hers for being a sexual woman. especially when there are so many out there. Shame on you. I can bet you seriously need a life

I decided not to buy her album after her publicity stunt because if people embrace that foolishness then you will have someone taking their clothes off disrespecting the spot Dr. King was assinated at next.
Erykah’s new album is FANTASTIC. I loved part 1 too. Pick it up!
Luv Erykah’s artistry, not on board with the vid if there were children present, but i get where she was coming from. Still wish her the best & I pray that her children are well adjusted.
THE JUDGMENTAL FEAR JUDGMENT, BUT ARE QUICK TO GIVE IT….
ZION –
please look deep, and stop questioning the inner character of someone you dont know… it’s sad to be so negative from mere perceptions and fleein glances, you have know idea what someone is like until you have talked to them. Seem like the biggest beast is one within your spirit…
I dont feel nothing but pure joy for this project, Erykah keep makin good music because at the end of the day it is what matters… THE VIDEO SPOKE TO ME & I AGREE…
I this new Erykah.
@ Zion Hill…..get a life!! Don’t take things so seriously…really…its not that serious. If it was a publicity stunt to boost sales….gues what….it was BRILLIANT!!!!
A man died there, and if you can’t see why it would be disrespectful to take off your clothes and pretend to get shot in the head where a man had is brains splattered, then this culture has become completely desensitized. This isn’t art. Quality art is subtle; this is in-your-face crass: real assassination = fake character assassination. That is CLICHE.
If you are looking for depth, pick up a book by Toni Morrison; W. E. B. Du Bois; bell hooks; Franz Fanon; Richard Wright. Don’t go assigning “depth” to pop stars who are admittedly struggling financially (she said that she could no longer sell records and get residual checks) and thus capable of exercising bad judgement due to desperation. Her “art” has been compromised because of her financial situation.
She said in an interview a few years back that if you want to make it in this industry “create your own publicity; do some ho shit” and “just be butt-naked somewhere”. I guess she took her own advice. But because she is inauthentic and dishonest, she won’t admit that she took her own advice. Instead, she will pretend that she knows something about JFK. She incorrectly said that he was a “revolutionary.” JKF was a pragmatic, capitalistic politician who was killed by a communist. Where does she get off making him into some guerrilla warrior?
She is confused, contradictory, and more of a capitalist than she would care to admit. The right thing to do would be to apologize for pretending to lose her life the way JFK actually did. But she won’t do that. I don’t think she will ever be able to comprehend that she did anything wrong. I hope she is able to pay her rent now that she has caused a stir.
Wana Sykes is funny lol

@Tina, well said…my point exactly!!!!!!
I love this performance
Tina, I agree with you and the few others on here who disagree with her stunt. I won’t even write a long paragraph expressing how wrong she was because it seems like you and a few others have explained why very well, but I will say that I can’t believe that there are so many naive people on here. So everyone who is saying that what Erykah did was okay and brilliant doesn’t mind if she was walking around naked in front of young children. I guess y’all think that what R Kelly did to that 14 year old girl was okay too huh? Whatever her motives were to getting naked on the street, she was in the wrong because no one should have to see anyone’s nakedness while taking an innocent walk down the street, no matter what age they are. Her antic was cheap, tacky, and it seems like she’s using a bit of reverse psychology on everyone; turning around all of the “negativity” into creativeness. People are stupid and will believe anything that sounds intelligent or deep.
First off, This album is amazing… Badu is and always has been an individualist musically & personally…
& in some way shape or form will always be considered a “revolutionary” – Regardless of her “Many baby fathers”… Who are any of you to judge her? She’s open with herself and her sexuality and there’s nothing wrong with that… No disrespect but – Maybe if some of you were as open with yourselves you’d smile more often… There’s nothing wrong with seeing what you want and going for it if it pleases you… She’s a woman that gets what she wants… aint nothin wrong with that… So take a page from her book & spread love not war!
Furthermore… She’s been partially responsible for the success of ALL those men that she’s been with – & they are not complaining… NONE of the men She has been with with call her anything less than a queen (unless emotionally distraught about the break up and even still that wouldnt DARE be said so that it could get back to her or hurt her in any way!)
As for the alleged “nudity stunt” were we not all born naked? Get a grip! Im almost positive that the “children exposed” to her nudity werent thinking about it as anything sexual… And if she wanted to come off a certain way, do you honestly think she’d go out without makeup with a damn scarf on her head, and get shot? If you think that’s sexy, you may need either a shrink or to do some soul searching because thats just disturbing…
All that said in as basic of terms as I could possibly have put it in – for the simple minded…
Badu I wish you all the best sister girl! Peace & Love through the waves…
“Reversing a lifetime of socialization can be hard but if you love the freedom of being its totally worth it”
~~Signing off~~
GODDESS
NONE of the men she’s has been with will*
Oh and Tina… She is FAR from struggling… simply making music because: 1. she loves to, and 2. she needs to meet her labels requirements! This woman will be fine for the rest of her life if she never makes another album again… Believe that! lol
Great website. Lots of helpful info here. I?m sending it to some friends ans additionally sharing in delicious. And of course, thank you for your effort!
