EVENT: BOXING KITTEN RESORT 2010 LAUNCH PARTY IN NYC

Concrete Loop ‘Designer Spotlight’ Alumni Maya Lake (pictured above) of the ever popular Boxing Kitten held her ‘Resort 2010′ launch party at a Soho Rooftop on Thursday night (May 13).

The celebrity designer who has everyone from Beyonce to Erykah Badu rocking her creations, unveiled some new looks from her upcoming Resort 2010 collection (click that link).

I hit up the event with singer Estelle to check out the new designs and chill with cool people. The vibe was laid back with sounds from DJ Jahi Sundance and some of you may remember top model winner Naima Mora, well her twin sister Nia was there modeling some of Maya’s latest looks. “Jungle”- sexy, tribal, exotic summer anthem. Don’t click on the link! You’re not ready for it, or are u?

  8. mpo

Anyway, I love the collection, but I hated that this woman never acknowlegded her african inspirations. Im glad that celebrities are wearin african fabrics but Ima tell you, african designers are a force to be reckoned with they give this woman a run for her money!

Check this and you’ll see what Im talking about, the fiercest looks with the fabrics.

  10. Obiama

This is nothing new. I am Nigerian – we have these back home. She is putting African prints on basic designs.

  11. ThyBlackMan

I to love the collection, and also glad to see my sistas coming together… Yes uplifting each other even in the business world… -Smile-

  12. MRS.D

Tacky ars looking clothe,, and angel please don’t wear that lipstick again. It doesn’t look good on you. Ur already not easy on the eyes, don’t make it worse

  13. EVE

Everyone in here has perfect skin and I’m jealous!

  14. EVE

#12 Not true. The blue matches her undertones perfectly.

  15. Uchenna

I agree with #10, this is really nothing new, the designer is simply creating basic outfits with traditional African cloths. It’s just unfortunate that the true Nigerian designs have not made it mainstream to the US, otherwise these designs by this designer would seriously be put to shame. I appreciate the fact that she is making use of African cloths (Ankara is the name), but other Nigerian designers have been doing this for some time especially JBL (Jewel by Lisa)–this designer’s pieces would make Boxing Kitten cry!

  16. Channi_imaSTAR

    Hey,

Angel you are a beautiful woman and you are very fashionable. Most of these fools do not have any taste or style. Don’t listen to these COONtastic people with nothing but vitriol to spew at every corner.

Now I’m off to check out your other blog to see what new boots you bought lol….

  21. Truth

Loving the pix, looks like a fun/ecclectic good time. I’m not surprised to see Naima there either, loves her! Good lookin & lookin good, Angel! :-)

  22. PhD

@ Angel, you look beautiful!!!! @ #12, that was mean!

  23. Kyla

To be honest, these designs are ugly.
The STYLE of the clothing is not that bad but the actual design on them are.
Would anyone actually wear any of these?

  24. Lala

This women is a rip off i can by the fabric for a fraction of the price here in London, you can be influenced yes as all designers are but to fail to TRULY acknowledge is a desgrace so for that I do not rate her!!!!!

  25. MINDFUL

Damn give Angel a break people! Remember if it were not for her there would be no CL website for you to post your smart ass remarks on.

  26. afrobella82(MJ stan 4 life)

    Love those earrings Angel!

  27. michelle

ankara is not just worn in nigeria but in most of western africa.

  28. PLEASE DON'T BE STUPID

THIS GIRL DOESN’T GIVE PROPS TO ANKARA OR WEST AFRICA AT ALL ON HER SITE… WTF???

COULD SHE EVEN HAVE A LINE WITHOUT THESE FABRICS WHICH CLEARLY ORIGINATE IN WEST AFRICA???

    YET ANOTHER OVERHYPED CULTURE VULTURE!!!

  29. me me

Wow!! these clothes are so beautiful!!!
To all of the haters commenting on the designer stealing African culture or Nigerian fabrics, is truly sad. Considering the fact that all of the designs are based off of our history of being of African heritage. Its so easy to say that you can go home and make a piece for less money! The sad thing is your so busy hating on this line which is made by an African American. When you should be coming for Suno (www.sunony.com), which is a line made by white people who have women in Africa producing the clothing with African fabric and charge 3 times more then Boxing Kitten, yet the African women who produce the line get paid pennies. Get a life and get informed!

  30. Wow.

My closet is full of this tacky shit my dad brings from Nigeria. Maybe I should sell it to some of my white friends…they seem to take interest in cultural design.

  31. Surprise

WTH… I’m sorry but that line is tacky, Estelle looks nice though…

  32. mrs. sk8board p (ak & bk stan)

    everyone looks great

  33. SASSY

These are african fabrics SERIOUSLY, im African and wear this almost everyday and people think im crazy.

    WHOOAAHH!!

Just because she added a lil twist to it NOW ppl are interested

    BUNCH OF BULLL

  34. FallBackHaters

A white chick profiting off a black person’s culture? What’s new? From the time Angel been posting about her designs I ain’t never heard her acknowledge WEST AFRICA. Damn shame.

Everyone looks lovely tho. Real nice.

@ #12- GTFOH with that mess. People like you seriously make me sick.

  35. KOFI

ANGEL! You are soooooo IT! Your whole effect is the BeeKnees

  36. lisa lisa

What is everyone talking about! The clothes are stunning!!!!! and the designer is black. Shes not white. Are people blind???

  37. lisa lisa

#34 your stupid. Shes a black designer. Can you see? Read the site, west africa as well as the civil rights movement is apart of her inspiration. GET A LIFE PLEASE!

  38. junior

BORING!!!!! AND WHY DOES THE DUDE HAVE SHADES ON AT NIGHT HAHAHA WACK!!! UMM WHAT CELEBRITIES WERE THERE BESIDES ESTELLE! CUZ I NEVER SEEN ANYONE ELSE IN MY LIFE!

  39. HELL NAW

I am DEEPLY offended by anyone even thinking any of these fabrics/prints are original–if you mean original like AFRICAN (particularly West African) prints that the average Nigerian, Ghanaian, Sierra Leonian man, woman, and child have in their closets, then yes this is original because common African prints are “new” to westerners. I have at least three similar prints in my closet, and these are I got from Nigeria on my last trip home. So, please educate yourselves, so fraud designers like this one are not taking what AFRICAN women tailors have been doing for MANY years…making English/Western style clothes with our ankara and various prints…THIS IS BS, and i better hear other Africans on here speaking on it…wow.

  40. Love Grace

Truth is, all fashion is taken and ripped off of some other fashion. If you do not like, do not buy. If you like, buy.

  41. Love Grace

    And Im Nigerian as well.

  42. actingbetty

Angel you look good ! love the boots ! real cute

anywho who’s the chick with the long braids i’ve seen her somewhere

as others stated the line is nice…
but i’ve seen it all before she just used african cloth and designed whatever outfit its cute but nothing original *kane shrugs* not knockin her hustle though

  43. actingbetty

my parents are from liberia located in West Africa of course so yes we’ve seen it all before ya’ll need to watch out for my girl Amarachi lol now she is HOT ! not to toot her horn :/

  44. Truth is....

First I want to say I love concrete loop Angel for all that you do I respect it.

Secondly, I want to say that you always be looking homeless. I mean I understand personal style but its too over-board something is not natural about it. From your bags, to the earrings, to the got damn blasted damned to hell and back again lipstick choices you make. I mean are you trying to look like one of those celebs who are over the top (KELIS) or are you trying to stand out. Your whole look screams look at me, attention. Would love to see you in something normal got dammit yea mainstream I fricken said it I am tired of people thinking they are thinking out the got damn box everyone does not (ANGEL) pull it off and ends up looking like a chocolate marshmallow man clown looking fool.

Again, love the work you do for concrete loop, love you, but maybe you should consider staying behind the scenes if you know what I mean *wink*

  45. Truth is....

African people especially NIGERIANS are so frickin conceited take yo ass back to Africa if its the shyt…fuck outta here I never met a humble African who bigs up America. I mean they come here just to talk shyt layed up in all American attire, house, car, and everything they can get their crusty toes on. Burns me the hell up.

  46. @ 44. This is my normal. Like mama says..not everyone is going to like you. :) Thanx for liking concrete loop but your compliment was kind of back-handed..so yeah.

Anyway, shout out to Maya and Boxing Kitten.

  47. me!

Maya is black, some of you hate just to hate. I had to come back and say that.

  48. buffyuna

I LOVE Angel’s style. From the hair to the clothes she is workin it.

  49. feiji1112

woooooo!!!I came acorss a great hot cougar dating site.

If you put “A GE” and “MIN GLE” together, then you will get the url.

It’s a nice and free place for Younger- Women and Older Men, or Older Women and Younger Men, to- interact with each other. Maybe you wanna check out or- tell your friends

  50. Jessica

angella why the hell u think u look so hot …when ur negro hard hair lookz a hot azz mess…cant u try perm or sum….cmn now …this is embarrasing

  51. duh

Only in America is Maya considered “black” with our dumb ass one drop rule …smh…lets face it, in reality we’re all “black” guess.

@45- Africans are not conceited they just know who they are, where they come from and take pride in themselves and their rich culture also they do not have the victim, slave mentality like many (not all) AAs. So i understand your hate is from a place of jealous insecurity.

    I am African American btw.

  52. Yo!

    @Jessica

Why should she get a perm? “Negro hair”? What the hell? I wonder how you look like for someone criticizing folks. Smh.

  53. Leo

    Angel looks like Precious.

  55. micmic1

Angel I love your STYLE!!! Your style ROCKS and it FITS you well!

Keep doing you and being the motivator you are!

  56. micmic1

I have to come again. #44 I cannot believe the nerve of some ppl coming on this blog to be so disrespectful to the owner of the site.

Angel said it right. Not everyone is going to like you and no matter how hard you try, the old saying rings true. “You can please some of the ppl some of the time, but never will you please all of them all of the time”

Angel, again I say do you and keep doing you! Don’t change for anyone because confidence, grace and class fit you VERY well!

  57. Monie

@Truth Is….wow, did u really have to be sooo rude? I agree, Angel’s style is different and we all my not like it %100 of the time but it’s HER style. I actually think seeing Angel in “mainstream” clothes will freak us out lol. I can’t imagine her lookin like a normie lol. So Angel, keep doin ya damn thang!!

  58. Kwenah

  59. D

The people that comment on Concrete Loop are a sad bunch of insecure idiots. I have been reading CL since it started and I am a fan and appreciate the hard work and sweat Angel has put in and continues to put into this site.

Like Angel said, this is her normal. I admire her confidence, style and she is one beautiful young lady. If you have nothing nice to say and damn near attacking her, please take yourself off the ledge and seek therapy.

I wish people would post their opinions with intelligence and class. I have never seen a bigger contrast between the content of a blog and the people that comment on it. This is a classy blog but some people on here need a life!

As for the designs, I like them.. they are cute and I would rock them. But I would like if Maya would give more props to the designs and their origins. That is all. All the best to her and continued success to her line because it is exposing the beauty of West African fabric!!

  60. getwhatugive

I agree that people need to stop with the nasty comments but Angel does her fair share of trash talking. A couple of years back a lot of CL posts by her were straight up MEAN. It’s got better but you can always tell when Angel posts something because she always has some smart as comment to make lol.
