Concrete Loop ‘Designer Spotlight’ Alumni Maya Lake (pictured above) of the ever popular Boxing Kitten held her ‘Resort 2010′ launch party at a Soho Rooftop on Thursday night (May 13).
The celebrity designer who has everyone from Beyonce to Erykah Badu rocking her creations, unveiled some new looks from her upcoming Resort 2010 collection (click that link).
I hit up the event with singer Estelle to check out the new designs and chill with cool people. The vibe was laid back with sounds from DJ Jahi Sundance and some of you may remember top model winner Naima Mora, well her twin sister Nia was there modeling some of Maya’s latest looks. Obviously Angel makes some of these commentors feel and show just how insecure they are by insulting her. When really all it is is that Angel is just “Too Black” for your likings. Angel seems to be in her natural state. Not ashamed of her african features, from her hair to her skin tone to her clothes. The same people insulting her are the same people who praise all things caucasian or damn near close to it. It is so sad to see just how many blacks have been brainwashed into this kind of thinking. it does not really matter what colour the designer is, whether she is black, white or both. The fact is she is failing to acknowledges and give credit back to the West Africans who originated these fabrics and still make them now (and alot more better ones too). I understand that she on her hustle and seems to have many great ideas but all she needs to do is acknowledge that she was inspired by West African culture and it will all be good as the fact that she hasn’t is what cause people to think she is ripping of West African culture and exploiting their hard work. I’m Nigerian by the way.
Firstly, the whole of Africa wears prints but if you are truly African you would know which fabric prints are from which country, AND THIS IS TRULY A WEST AFRICAN FABRIC NO DOUBT, I am also insulted with some of the comments about angel and about Nigeria. I have read all the comments here and no-one said anything about Nigeria being a better country etc.., they just expressing their opinion when they feel that Boxing Kitten is not acknowledging Africa when it come to her style. Food For Thought: Why does Maya have to SAY that the clothing was inspired by West African patterns? You can clearly see where the inspiration comes from. Did she deny/reject the West African patterns? ….Did she say, “No, no, this wasn’t inspired by Africa. I was walking in the fabric store and decided to use a pattern that, as an African American, I had never seen before and don’t know where it originated.” You don’t know where she stands because you don’t know much about her. She is up and coming.
