What are some of you talking about ? Its a fundraiser for the white house press corps and is basically a media event than a formal white house event . The money generated from the event funds many scholarships and other charitable activities. The White House (Obama included) DOES NOT make invitations to this event. The President is himself an INVITED GUEST. This dinner is put on annually by the White House Correspondents Association, or in other words the various press outlets that cover the White House. It is their biggest fundraiser each year. Every president since the 30s has attended the dinner and is asked to give a political roast of the previous year in office.
As far as invited guests, each media out (NY Times, Washington Post, CNN, MSNBC to PerezHilton.com, FunnyOrDie, etc.) is allotted guest spots. This is how the celebrities get invited. They have to be the guest of a member of the White House Corr. Assoc.
