Fresh off the heels of a new release, retro futuristic soul singer Janelle Monáe graced the stage of David Letterman last night to perform her single, “Tight Rope.”
Monáe released her debut full length LP, The ArchAndroid just yesterday. According to Twitter, the album has been flying off of shelves, and has sold out at a lot of Target locations.

Who says that my intention is to speak from a “real world” perspective (Romans 12:2)? What is the “real world” (II Cor 10:4,5, Eph 6:12)? We have to establish that before we know what “real” is and what it isn’t. Once we do that, then we can get an understanding of how pervasive this frame of mind that is being propagated is. Once evil becomes the status quo, it is no longer evil, it is “reality” (I John 5:19-21). This means that the battle is against “reality” as much as it is against “this world”, because a new world is being prompted to be ushered in at the behest of both the servants of Satan and those of God. The servants of God are those that seek the truth and can discern the lies (Isaiah 65:16,17, John 8:44, I John 4:5,6). My point being that “reality” is relative. Don’t ever think that it isn’t because that is when you start to adhere to what your eyes tell you, and they will deceive you (II Thes 2:8-13).

I had seen this last night on Late Night with David Letterman show, Janelle Monae’s performance was fantastic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I will definitely (try my best to) see her in concert during her touring schedule.

I was at Best Buy earlier today, and they said they only ordered TWO (who knew you could do that?), and they’re both gone. Folks have been asking for it, but they didn’t know she was that popular, so they didn’t place a full order.
So i HOPE they really are “flying off shelves,” and they weren’t just under-stocked like at this store.
WOW. I actually expected to come to a post where such genius would be revered and not shunned. I don’t see the problem with her paying homage to James Brown. She is more than obvious about her giving him a nod vs. trying to steal his style for her own. I mean, someone brought out a cape for her. Come on now! That is not subtle. She is showing the man respect while expressing a love for the style of music he made popular. Other posters are right on the mark when they mention that MJ and other artists have done the same or very similar in the past. We are supposed to be influenced by the greats. That is why they are the greats. I would much rather an artist reveal her James Brown influences than some of these other artists out. Furthermore, JM’s album isn’t entirely in the “Tightrope” style. In fact, very few sound like that. We need to embrace talent like this.

Her voice was very pitchy while she was performing, but she can sing and has a nice voice. She’s a bit odd for me and I don’t really care for her music, but I applaud her for being different and herself. Overall, the performance was pretty good but it was too much James Brown. Yes Michael Jackson was inspired by James Brown, but that’s the key word, INSPIRED! He did not copy off James’ Brown’s style or moves. He learned to dance from watching his and other music artists’ music videos. Michael Jackson had his own sound, image, and dance moves. If she had different dance moves and didn’t have someone come up and put the cape around her back towards the end of the performance, she would have been more of herself.
There is just something missing when i listen to this- her performance is very energetic and I like that she is reviving this type of music but I just don’t think she has the right vocals for it, which makes it boring to me. Still it sounds like she is doing really well and has a good fan base. I wish her well.
